Bump, set, give back! Ann Storck Center – a Fort Lauderdale-based private nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities – is excited to host its 39th Annual All Heart Volleyball Challenge on Saturday, June 7, on Pompano Beach.
The community event will feature a fun-filled day of volleyball, a live DJ, a raffle, prizes, lunch, dinner, beverages and more to make a difference in the lives of adults and children with developmental disabilities. Co-ed 6’s volleyball teams are invited to participate in the beach volleyball tournament in competitive or recreational divisions.
Teams must consist of a minimum of six players and can be a maximum of eight players. Players under 18 years old must sign a waiver.
Sponsorship opportunities are available and range from $150 to $10,000. Individual tournament entry is available for $50 and registration for a team of eight is $400. Registration includes a shirt, meals, drinks and prizes.
Proceeds benefit Ann Storck Center, which accommodates 96 permanent residents and serves more than 300 clients daily through an array of critical care, learning and ability-focused programs.

About the Conversation: Moderated by the DVCAI at Barry Curatorial Team, Rosie Gordon-Wallace, Lauryn Lawrence, and Louise Martorano, this artist conversation provides unique insights into how both artists approach themes of belonging, transformation, and “in-between states” through their distinct yet complementary practices.
Samuelson and Bradley will discuss their responsive collaboration, the evolution of their works “Telegraph Valley” and “From One Sea,” and how their artistic practices engage with questions of home, memory, and cultural identity.
Featured Artists:
L.A. Samuelson is an interdisciplinary choreographer working in performance, sculpture, and new media. Their installation “Telegraph Valley” deconstructs the body as a “house for the soul” metaphor, exploring how we find home in bodies that experience loss while accumulating life.
Amanda Bradley is a Belizean American artist, photographer, and curator whose photographic installation “From One Sea” centers the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean as sites of memory, inviting viewers to become active participants in a visual narrative that bridges the seen, felt, and spoken.
This conversation is part of the ongoing exhibition “Across ebb and flow,” on view June 26 – September 30, 2025, during regular library hours. Across ebb and flow is a two-person exhibition featuring installations by artists L.A. Samuelson, an interdisciplinary choreographer working in performance, sculpture, and new media, and Amanda Bradley, a Belizean American artist, photographer, and curator. Both artists present works that are adaptive to site and transform with each iteration of presentation.
Join us for the opening reception as we witness the premiere performance of Telegraph Valley at 7:00 PM—created and performed by L.A. Samuelson in collaboration with Dramaturg Elle Hong and Sound Artist Adam Stone. Assembled from house frames, ladders, floating decks, mattresses, rotating light sources, and one dancer, Telegraph Valley makes momentary dwellings out of holes and passageways, attempting to deconstruct the body as a “house for the soul” metaphor to uncover something that roves, collides, undercuts, and transforms what we understand ourselves to be.
Experience Amanda Bradley’s From One Sea (2017-2025), where photography becomes a language that bridges the seen, felt, and spoken. Her photographic installation centers the sea as a site of memory, with the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean acting as wells of memory and places of possibility. As viewers follow the horizon, a poem reveals itself, creating a journey and guiding the viewer along.
Within each body of work, the artists deconstruct notions of ownership, division, and permanence, seeking a more expansive relationship to change, connection, and loss. The exhibition spans installation, photographic, poetic, and performative practices—building a world within the ebb and flow of disciplines and forms.

Join Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center®, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, and Loggerhead Marinelife Center as we embark on an action-packed virtual summer adventure. From sea turtles to manatees to otters and more, campers will embark on a colorful journey beneath the waves to inspire a love for marine life and its preservation.

Each twenty minute playlet contains controversial material to fuel conversation afterwards and a powerful night of theatre. THE GOPHER, you decide if it is an account of or a jarring appeal, a male convict who’s been abused by a relative decides to stop the cycle. BIOLUMINESCENT, a comedic yet heart wrenching dialogue with a proud-and-out South Beach gay father and his non-binary child, as they navigate pronouns & stereotypes to find common ground. IMPOSTER SYNDROME, a bisexual high school educator falls for a transgendered man. Everything seems perfect until getting pregnant becomes the catalyst for unknown lines in the sand.

MODS Sensory-Friendly Sundays provide a sensory sensitive environment for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. The museum is open two hours early for exploration and activities followed by an IMAX film at 12:30 p.m.
To provide a more sensory-sensitive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, the theater lights will be turned up and the sound will be lowered. All films will be presented in 2D and no trailers will be shown before the movie. Audience members are welcome to get up, sing, walk, dance and shout without worrying about complaints. Families can bring snacks from home, blankets and other small items to make themselves comfortable.

We had our first Baby Boomer president, and we could not stop “Thinking About Tomorrow”. If you were really cool you had a Blackberry, a first-generation Nintendo or PlayStation, and if you were really, really cool you had already upgraded from a Walkman to a Discman.
In the 1990’s Homosexuality was no longer considered an illness by the World Health Organization.
In 1991, the red ribbon became the international symbol of AIDS awareness. AIDS became the number one cause of death for U.S. men aged 25-44 years old in 1992. By 1994, AIDS became the leading cause of death for all Americans ages 25-44 years old.
On TV and movies, more LGBT characters were added that their sexual preference were not their defining character. In 1993, President Bill Clinton announced an end to a longtime ban on gay men and women serving in the U.S. military. The new policy was a compromise that pleased neither conservatives nor gay rights advocates. But it was a step on a long road to today’s military policy of inclusiveness and support of its LGBTQ+ members. In 1999, Clinton officially declared in a presidential proclamation, June “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month”.
When selecting our films for Pride Month, we chose films aimed to be insightful, nostalgist, educational and most important entertaining for the entire South Florida Community.

After a hiatus to raise her family, she returned to painting in 2016, focusing on portraits. In 2020, her work was featured in three exhibits, including the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. A self-taught artist, she primarily works with oil paints, although she enjoys watercolors and pencil. Her art reflects her spiritual connection and personal growth, showcasing bright colors, bold patterns, and symbolic animals and plants.

Celebrate the start of Pride Month with two evenings of live music, performance and large-scale visual art in the heart of South Beach.
The Miami Beach Pride Concert returns to Ocean Drive and 12th Street on Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1, transforming The Tides building into a luminous centerpiece through projection mapping by the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival. Each night features a curated lineup of DJs and performers alongside dynamic Pride-themed visuals that illuminate the Art Deco facade.
Saturday’s program includes music by DJ La Trice, a live electronic violin set by Siobhan Cronin, tenor Gerard Ortega and a special appearance by Ward Zulu’s Vogue Extravaganza. Sunday’s event continues with DJ Eliad Cohen, Otto Santana on drum and returning performances by Cronin and Ortega.

A salacious love triangle, secrets and intrigue haunt the modern American tragedy The Dying Gaul by Craig Lucas making its South Florida premiere at Island City Stage on May 22. The show runs through June 15.
In The Dying Gaul, a grieving screenwriter compromises his ideals to make a small fortune that enables him to climb from invisible poverty into the rarefied seductions and surreal beauty of the Hollywood Hills. Hailed in 1998 as the best American play by The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, The Dying Gaul premiered off-Broadway at New York City’s Vineyard Theatre to rave reviews. Craig Lucas later adapted the play into a 2005 film (starring Peter Sarsgaard, Campbell Scott and Patricia Clarkson) marking his directorial debut. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and the National Board of Review awarded the film Special Recognition for Excellence in filmmaking.
The personal and professional life of acclaimed playwright, screenwriter and film director Craig Lucas is as engrossing as his plays. Abandoned as a child when he was eight months old and adopted by a conservative Pennsylvania couple, he repressed both his Jewish identity and sexual preference for years. It was only till he embraced his identity as a gay Jewish man that he was able to develop as an artist and as a person. A 1973 graduate of Boston University, earning a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and theater, his mentor Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Anne Sexton, urged him to move to New York City to become a playwright. In 1979, his life-changing professional break took place when he collaborated with theater and film director Norman René. The two wrote several plays throughout the 1980s. They both achieved their biggest commercial and critical success in 1990 with Prelude to a Kiss, which earned a 1991 Pulitzer Prize nomination. The play was later made into a film starring Meg Ryan and Alec Baldwin. René died of complications from AIDS in 1996. Since 2001, Lucas has received numerous awards as a playwright, director and screen writer including a 2001 Obie Award and a 2003 New York Film Critics Award. In 2022, he was nominated for a Tony Award for the musical, Paradise Square.
Island City Stage’s production of The Dying Gaul is directed by Rogow and stars Amir Darvish (Jeffrey), Jorge Amador (Robert), Autumn Kioti Horne (Elaine), and Ted deChatelet (Foss).

Goliath Grouper, once relatively abundant in U.S. waters in the 1890s to early 1900s, experienced extreme overfishing thereafter, approaching extinction by the1980s. Fishery closures were put into place that set this species on a trajectory to recovery for 20 years. However, despite these protections, populations seem to be on another decline. On Friday, May 16, Reserve Cares—the charitable arm of Reserve Padel—will host the inaugural Moonlight Open at Reserve Miami Seaplane. Held in honor of Charlie Moon, a cherished friend, colleague, and member of the Reserve family who is currently battling Leukemia, the event will raise funds to support leukemia patients at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Moonlight Open will unite the local community around sport, philanthropy, and celebration, with the ambitious goal of raising $750,000 to $1,000,000 in support of cancer research and treatment at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Join MOAD for an open studio featuring Miami-based artist Lucia Morales on Tuesday, July 1. Throughout the summer term, Morales will create new work and engage with students, campus groups, and members of the public during her artist residency at MDC’s Kendall Campus Art Gallery.
Lucia Morales is a Peruvian artist who lives and works in Miami. Born in Lima, Morales moved to United States with her family at a young age. Influenced deeply by her cultural heritage, she seeks to reconnect to Ayacucho, a city nestled in the Andean Mountains, where her family is from.
As a multidisciplinary artist and educator, Morales examines themes of place and investigates how migration and immigration reshape notions of identity through painting, textiles, video performance, and installation. Informed by her family and Andean culture and history, Morales practices Peruvian folkloric dance weekly, which for her serves as a form of resistance, aiming to maintain her roots and traditions alive within her community.
Morales holds a Master of Fine Art, MA in Art Education and a BA in Landscape Architecture from Florida international University. She has worked and collaborated as an art educator with Miami-Dade and Broward public schools and with institutions such as The Wolfsonian and the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.
MOAD is proud to offer artists resources, support, and space to create in Miami. This artist residency will also invite the public to step into the studio and observe and interact with the artist at work, promoting conversations about process, multidisciplinary artmaking, and the role of the artist within learning institutions.

Join Jacqui Love-Thornell as she discusses her exquisite photo collection, which she generously donated to the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in 2022. The collection contains over 1300 photographs, including cabinet cards, tintypes, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, stereotypes, cartes de visite, and postcards documenting Black American life from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. Jaquelyn Love-Thornell collected the photographs over a 15-year period.

Jacqui later attended Trent State University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education with minors in Math and Psychology.

Creativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of material exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. Join us for the keynote presentation, “Beyond the Archive: The Cabrera-Tarafa Collection of Afro-Cuban Music, circa 1956” by Dr. J. Lorand Matory with comments from Dr. David Font-Navarrete.
In the mid-1950s, Lydia Cabrera and Josefina Tarafa recorded hours of Afro-Cuban ritual music in Matanzas and Havana, Cuba. The result was “Música de los cultos africanos en Cuba” (Music of the African Cults in Cuba), a boxed set of phonograph LPs printed in Cuba and distributed privately in a single limited edition circa 1956. The collection consists of 14 LP discs containing over 11 hours of audio recordings, along with liner notes and photos. Given its scope and quality, “Música de los cultos” is arguably the single most robust multimedia archive of Afro-Cuban sacred music traditions in the mid-20th century.
It remains unclear in which year the recordings were made, when the discs were pressed, and how many copies of the boxed set were produced, and only a few institutions hold complete physical editions of the original LP boxed set in their repositories. The audio recordings—the only ones Cabrera produced in her long career—are saturated by the musical and linguistic virtuosity of priest-artists for which Cabrera became an archival medium, and the sounds themselves are arguably the pinnacle of her life-long efforts to produce “material for specialists which has not passed through the dangerous filter of interpretation” (2023).
The compilation of a new digital edition of “Música de los cultos” is available for the first time as a complete and annotated archival collection at the University Libraries’ Cuban Heritage Collection, which is the official repository of the Lydia Cabrera Papers.
The program will conclude with a question and answer session with the audience.
This keynote presentation is part of a symposium that explores vital 21st-century insights on a unique document of Afro-Cuban sacred music traditions and offers novel perspectives on the Cabrera Papers’ multifaceted scope and significance. On May 14, a private collaborative research workshop will bring together scholars, priests, and artists for a critical dialogue.
This event is co-sponsored by the University of Miami’s Michele Bowman Underwood Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Joseph Carter Memorial Fund.

Ada Karmi-Melamede is one of the most accomplished architects in the world, yet her work remains largely unrecognized beyond architectural circles. In the 1970s, she moved to New York from Israel, following her husband’s rising career, and spent the next 15 years balancing academia, large-scale public projects, and motherhood. While teaching at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, she contributed to major urban initiatives, including a master plan for Con Edison, a study for mixed-use development along the proposed Second Avenue Subway, and a 1978 housing competition on Roosevelt Island—all while raising three young children.
But in the early 1980s, after being denied tenure at Columbia, Ada made a bold decision to leave New York and her family for the opportunity of a lifetime – the design of the new Supreme Court of Israel. While her career flourished, personal sacrifices mounted as she remained far from her family. Ada’s work gave physical form to some of Israel’s highest democratic ideals, shaping landmarks such as the Supreme Court Building, The Open University, the Israel Institute for Democracy, and Ben Gurion University, among many other civic institutions. Ada – My Mother the Architect, directed by Ada’s daughter, Yael Melamede, explores the profound tension between career and motherhood and a unique mother-daughter bond.

Third Horizon Film Festival (THFF), an annual celebration of cinema from the Caribbean and its diaspora, returns for its eighth edition. This year’s THFF opening film is the Florida premiere of the Haiti-set documentary Koutkeout (At All Kosts) by Joseph Hillel, 2024. A testament to the resistance and courage of a people, the film is an immersive portrait of the Quatre Chemins theater festival in Port-au-Prince, and the extraordinary group of artists who keep it going year after year, whatever the cost.
Following the film and a Q&A with director Joseph Hillel, continue the night on the bayfront terrace for an afterparty with local DJs, community activations, and a live performance.

At the opening of her upcoming solo exhibit “Second Nature” at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden on May 1, Victoria Pesce Elliott will be showing sculpture, collage, paintings and lighting fixtures. All of the objects are made from natural materials found in the tropical environment surrounding her homes in Miami and Jamaica.
The work often includes plant materials like flowers, seeds, leaves and pods. And many are hand-dyed or pigmented with flower or other food products including beans, onions and tea. Her work begs the question: how much effort and artifice does it take to “improve” on nature? To attempt to preserve it?
Sometimes a little shellac can add shine and preserve a rough piece of driftwood. But what does it take to dry a flower, or to retain its natural color? Or perhaps save it from crumbling into dust? She juxtaposes garish silk or plastic flowers with dried and epoxied real ones in an effort to answer these questions. Some works include mirrors placed in odd positions making sure the viewer does not accidentally catch a glimpse of their own reflection.
Many of the sculptural pieces are lit from within in order to replicate the life that once existed inside.
This is part of her ongoing investigation of the nuanced boundaries between permanence and impermanence.
The results range from silly to ghoulish all the way to magical.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival spring edition, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, presents a special Drag Brunch showing of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar at 12:30 p.m. on April 27 at The Well in Wilton Manors.
This special event, hosted by Jasmine Pryce Lords, will be a fabulous afternoon filled with amazing performances, delicious food, bottomless drinks and great company. Talented drag queens themed to the film will entertain during this scrumptious brunch. Come dressed to impress and get ready to have a blast!
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a 1995 American road comedy film starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo as three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip. Its title refers to an iconic autographed photo of Julie Newmar they carry with them on their journey. Newmar also has a cameo appearance in the film as herself.
This season’s OUTshine line-up hits Miami-Dade and Broward counties with thought-provoking, inspiring, entertaining and educational star-studded features, documentaries and shorts including premieres from 20 countries. OUTshine At-Home viewing will be available from April 28 – May 4.

It’s all hands on deck as Lucky Fish Beach Bar + Grill Dania Beach joins forces with the City of Dania Beach for the City’s Fifth Annual Beach Clean-Up on Monday, April 21, to commemorate Earth Day. The community is invited for an epic treasure hunt on the shoreline to help rid the beaches of litter and protect the beauty of the beloved coastline.
The City of Dania Beach’s Fifth Annual Beach Clean Up will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dania Beach Pier. Participants will enjoy fun contests, prize drawings, light bites, sweet treats and kids’ face painting while giving back to Dania Beach’s beautiful beach. Volunteers of all ages are welcome.
After the beach cleanup, supporters are invited to Lucky Fish Beach Bar + Grill Dania Beach for a refreshing meal by the sea to dine for a cause. From 6 to 9 p.m., 15% of checks will go directly back to the Dania Beach Improvement Committee to support its continued efforts in maintaining the beautiful beaches, fortifying LM Restaurant’s dedication to giving back to the community.
The all-new Lucky Fish Beach Bar + Grill Dania Beach is the ultimate beachfront restaurant, where locals and visitors alike can walk right off the sand, sip on tiki bar cocktails and enjoy fresh, coastal-inspired eats — all with a stunning ocean view. The casual, family-friendly restaurant features a Florida Keys-style outdoor tiki bar, a cafe deck and a covered live music bandstand, plus lawn space for events. The charming, laid-back Old Florida ambiance of Lucky Fish Beach Bar + Grill Dania Beach offers live music every day and welcomes guests to bring their dogs or dress in their bathing suits after a day at the beach.
Helmed by Chef Ovidio “Nery” Leal, Lucky Fish Beach Bar + Grill Dania Beach features a delicious menu including casual seafood, sandwiches, smash burgers and salads. Highlights (“Lucky Picks”) from the breakfast menu include the Breakfast Burrito, Lucky’s Hangover Hash and Lucky’s Breakfast Scramble. The grab-and-go breakfast menu includes bagels, Danishes, muffins, croissants, coffee and orange juice. “Lucky Picks” on the lunch and dinner menu include Tuna Poke Nachos, Killer Conch Fritters, Island Chopped Salad, Tropical Shrimp Wrap, Florida Fish Sandwich, Hooked-Up Tacos, Mariner’s Platter, Lucky Fish Bowl, Triple Treat Burger, Key Lime Pie and Fried Oreos and Vanilla Sauce. The Happy Hour Menu, offered Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., features $7 cocktails, $5 draft beer and $6 wine by the glass.
Guests can enjoy live music Monday through Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m. and on weekends, from 3 to 6 p.m., with no cover charge.
