Artist Andrew Reid To Exhibit Work In Underground Gallery
The Betsy- South Beach will host an exhibition and book signing reception to honor the release of the Pocket Guide To Miami Architecture (W.W. Norton, $24.95) with author Judith Paine McBrien and illustrator John F. DeSalvo, on Thursday, March 8 at 8PM. An illustration of The Betsy’s façade is included in the book and will be on display along with drawings of many other local buildings. The event is free and open to the public.
Hosted by General Manager Jeff Lehman, Betsy’s event is part of an Evening of Arts Programs on Ocean Drive that begins at 7 pm with a lecture at the Miami Design Preservation League, 1001 Ocean Drive by author and scholar Joan Kahr on Edgar Brandt’s legendary Art Deco Ironwork. At 8 pm Betsy will host the book signing and display of book illustrations (for the Pocket Guide), as well as present a related art opening of the work of local artist, Andrew Reid, in the Underground Gallery. Live music from kazz pianist Max Farber and singer Mariana Martin will be featured throughout the evening.
The guidebook organizes 100 architectural highlights into walking tours of Miami and Miami Beach; covering exemplary examples of both historic and contemporary buildings in Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Downtown Miami, Buena Vista and Overtown, as well as Miami Beach. Books will be available for purchase onsite from Books & Books.
John DeSalvo’s Illustrations from the book will be projected virtually onto a big screen with several selections displayed on easels. Concurrently, Betsy’s Underground Gallery will display maquettes and sectional drawings of large pieces of public art from installations by artist Andrew Reid. Both artists will be present to greet the public and answer questions.
These events are presented under the auspices of The Betsy-South Beach’s Philanthropy, Arts and Culture Program. Believing that public spaces can be more than waiting areas, the vision for the property extends beyond the traditional construct of a hotel; as such, Betsy celebrates the arts through a wide range of programs, and has a very special focus on poetry and literature. Over the past three years, the hotel has become a catalyst for energized discourse, innovative thinking, and charity, and has worked with over 200 nonprofit partners in the region.
