“Provocative, intelligent, top-notch musical theater… The creators deserve to light some nice, big Cuban cigars… They have written a complex story, told exceptionally well.” –Berkshire On Stage, after a critically acclaimed sold-out run Off-Broadway.

Music by Salomon Lerner
Lyrics By Len Schiff
Book and Direction by Michel Hausmann

SYNOPSIS
The Golem of Havana tells the story of a Hungarian-Jewish family living in Batista’s Havana on the brink of the Cuban Revolution. When their maid’s son, a guerrilla fighter, is injured, they must choose between protecting him and guarding their first fragile grasp on prosperity since their arrival. The Golem of Havana weaves together the music and traditions of two worlds, asking questions about family, community, religion, and politics.

ABOUT
Developed at the prestigious New York Theatre Workshop, The Golem of Havana has enjoyed sold-out productions Off-Broadway at La MaMa E.T.C. in New York City and in the Berkshires at Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning theatre company in downtown Pittsfield, MA. There, the musical became the fastest selling new show in the theatre’s history. The musical was also a Richard Rodgers Award finalist for New Musical Theatre and an Independent Reviews of New England Award (IRNE) nominee for best play.

MDPL’s resident artist, Iris Chase worked with Tatyana designers to pick out the best 1930s and 40s Tatyana creations to be presented in the Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The best part? You can purchase your favorite styles and jewelry in the Official Art Deco Gift Shop following the show! The selected pieces reflect women’s style during the Art Deco era. Additionally, Belinda Designs has lent us a small selection of her couture 1920s dresses and headpieces for the show!

The models are delegates of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants and will walk to runway to modernized blends of famous 1930s tunes. Their hair and make-up will be done by the students from the Beauty School of America in some of our favorite 1930s and 40s looks. Think pin curls and red lipstick. Be sure to come early and save your spot. This has become one of the most popular events at Art Deco Weekend!

In addition to the all-inclusive package, event-goers will walk the “gold carpet” at the luxury location, unlike any other. Known as a venue that truly caters to the most discerning guests, this “golden affair” will take place on a property used to being a temporary home away from home to dignitaries and celebrities. For one evening, it will welcome hundreds to celebrate the New Year with an unobstructed view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Produced by AMPM Presents, the team behind this special event carefully selected the entertainment, to transport guests for the evening. From the glittering lights, to the glistening pool which will serve as one of the many “stages”, guests are in for a tantalizing experience. Greek mythology served as inspiration for this one-of-a-kind New Year’s party. But entertainment, inspired by many eras, will come to life in the color synonymous with royalty, mysticism, magic, and good fortune. 2016 will arrive at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, all dressed up in gold.

The attire suggestion is “Miami Gold Chic” which will no doubt inspire fashionistas to don their very best for that special selfie at 12AM!
*Guests are reminded to please drink responsibly.*

Enjoy the release of Que Quat, a Kumquat Berliner Weisse and winner of Concrete Beach’s last What Brews You contest, submitted by Will Isaacson. Que Quat is a Florida take on a German tradition. Berliner Weisse beers are refreshing and tart, from the influence of lactobacillus during fermentation. This beer will touch on those points with the addition of the delicious overtone of kumquat. Beer lovers in Germany often add flavored syrups to this style of beer to balance the flavor. Concrete Beach Brewery will feature a syrup bar with two kegs of regular Berliner Weisse, so guests can mix and match to suit their tastes. The event will also celebrate the kick-off of the next What Brews You? contest, which begins on February 1st.

Three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington comes to the Fort Lauderdale area January 9 at 8 PM in “Money Jungle,” an homage to Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. The concert is part of South Florida JAZZ’s ongoing series bringing the best jazz to South Florida. The performance will be at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Boulevard in Davie. Tickets are $40 at southfloridajazz.org or call (954) 462-0222.

Shortly after graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, she caught the eye of Wayne Shorter, which was revelatory. Gigs followed with luminaries Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, David Sanborn, Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves. After years of extensive touring, Terri relocated to Los Angeles, where she gained attention as the house drummer for the Arsenio Hall Show; then as the drummer on the Quincy Jones late night TV show, VIBE. Ultimately, she returned home where she received an honorary doctorate from Berklee in 2003 and subsequently was appointed to a professorship in 2006 that she still holds.

More recently, Ms Carrington has pursued a successful career releasing seven albums as a bandleader and producer, including the critically acclaimed The Mosaic Project in 2011 with a myriad of great singers, including Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cassandra Wilson, which won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

In 2013, Carrington released Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, her much anticipated homage to jazz giants Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach that coincided with the 50th anniversary of the release of their iconic and provocative 1963 Money Jungle trio album. With this recording, Ms. Carrington made history, as she became the first woman to win a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. It is that Money Jungle project and its historical relevance that Terri Lyne Carrington brings to this South Florida JAZZ concert.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will honor student-athletes, coaches and communities that are committed to making a difference in young people’s lives through faith and fellowship at its 45th annual Orange Bowl Prayer Breakfast. Sponsored by Baptist Health South Florida, the prayer breakfast will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 a.m. at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail. MDC Live Arts Continues Little Havana Social Club with The Duke of Bachata!
Joan Soriano brings his roots sound to Exciting Dance Party Series

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts and the Koubek Center present the South Florida premiere of Joan Soriano, the Duke of Bachata, at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 29 at the Koubek Center–offering up a roots evening of the beloved Dominican genre. The show continues MDC Live Arts’ new Little Havana Social Club, a dance party/concert series in the Koubek Center gardens, featuring flavorful live bands, pre-concert dance lessons, specialty cocktails, vendors and more.

The Dominican Republic’s “Duke of Bachata” brings old-school charm and modern sensibility to the genre, creating an irresistibly danceable sound that is as gritty as it is romantic. Soriano’s tender crooning evokes the countryside and sweeter times, but the nimble runs and articulate phrases on his steel-strong guitar give an urban, contemporary edge to his music. A practitioner of palo and gaga, he also blends Afro-Dominican sacred traditions with bachata. Together with his family band, Soriano preserves bachata’s roots and expands on them. He is a rare combination of new and authentic.

“Soriano’s music is gorgeous. He displays an emotionally powerful voice, versatility with bachata’s classic style of guitar playing, and compelling original compositions about love and loss.”–Dr. Deborah Pacini Hernandez, author, “Bachata: a social history of Dominican popular music.”
The concert will be preceded by a dance lesson, and followed by a DJ’ed dance party, on an outdoor dance floor under the stars.

MDC Live Arts Executive Director, Kathryn Garcia remarks, “This group is just perfect for a community dance party under the Miami moonlight! We are excited to welcome all who like to indulge in social dance, and look forward to seeing Miami’s Domini can community out in full swing!”

The Little Havana Social Club, in it’s very special home at the Koubek Center, is all about community and mingling–from the dance floor to the domino tables, listening lounge to the food trucks. Next in the series is Miami’s own Cuban salsa supergroup, TimbaLive, on March 18, 2016.

ABOUT JOAN SORIANO
Born in the rural countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Soriano is the seventh of fifteen siblings. As a boy he received little formal education, instead helping his father to work the family’s land. But Joan’s destiny was for music not agriculture. Fashioning his first guitar from fishing line and a discarded metal box, he joined his young brothers and sisters to form a family band. Nicknamed “Los Candes” (after their father Candelario) it became a neighborhood sensation. At age 13,Joan hitched a ride to Santo Domingo and went on to nurture his talent working with some of the island’s greatest bachata stars.

In 2010, his first international solo release: El Duque de la Bachata (iASO Records) spent several weeks in the Billboard Top 10 Tropical album charts, won best World Beat Album of 2011 from the Indie Acoustic Project and was on rotation on over 100 radio stations in the US. In 2012, he released La Familia Soriano, which showcased the rich musical tradition in the Soriano family, including Joan’s brother Fernando and sisters Nelly and Griselda. The Soriano family’s newest release Me Decidi, (2015) once again includes Joan’s siblings as well as his newest sister in music, Andre Veloz.

Soriano was the star of Adam Taub’s film, The Duke of Bachata, was featured in Alex Wolfe’s critically acclaimed documentary, Santo Domingo Blues, and was showcased on The Rough Guide’s Bachata compilation. He has performed throughout the USA and Europe.

Sedano’s and the Great Milk American Drive invite the South Florida community to join the fight against hunger

What:
In support of The Great American Milk Drive, the first-ever nationwide program to deliver gallons of milk to hungry families, who need it most, Sedano’s invites local communities to join the fight against hunger by making a small donation at checkout and help Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, deliver a nutrient-rich gallon of milk to a family in need (donations can be from $1, $3 or $5). Meeting the demand for milk has been a challenge for Feeding America due to the lack of donations. Milk is much harder to donate because it is perishable. Meanwhile, more than 48 million Americans – including 306,330 in Miami-Dade County – struggle with food insecurity. Sedano’s can help to provide gallons of milk directly to a local Feeding America food bank by accepting donations at checkout from December 2 through December 31.

Who:
Sedano’s will host a media event to promote the Great American Milk Drive’s donation campaign. Diahann Smith, Marketing Director Communications from Florida Dairy Farmers; and Pedro Mesa, Sedano’s Supervisor, will be available during the media event to discuss the details of their campaign and explain how it is now easier for Miami residents to lend a hand and contribute nutritious milk to food insecure families. The goal of the Great American Milk Drive campaign is to deliver milk to food banks across the country, and Miami residents can help meet that goal by contributing to their local drive and assisting local families.

Media:
If you are interested in attending, please contact María Rosa Collazo at mcollazo@república.net.

Segafredo Bayside Grand Opening Celebration 12/16/15

Segafredo Bayside Grand Opening Celebration
Wednesday December 16th, 2015, 7:00pm – 10:00pm

401 Biscayne Blvd., #K5862
Miami FL 33132
Facebook

From the partners of Segafredo L’Originale on Lincoln Road, the new Segafredo Bayside is now open at Bayside Marketplace’s waterfront plaza. The newly built, state-of-the-art kiosk with a full self-contained kitchen and an expansive full bar will host a grand opening party with complimentary Prosecco and a live show with Spam All Stars.

Located on the amphitheater waterfront plaza, the 580 square-foot kiosk and 2,500 square-foot outdoor space boasts two large letters “S” in the logo’s style, signature red and black table tops as well as Segafredo’s branded color red throughout. Luca Voltarel, co-owner and partner of both franchises, along with Graziano Sbroggio of Graspa Group, and Mark Soyka envision an extension (with a “mainland” twist) of the successful music-driven lounge café in Miami Beach.

Seating 90 guests, Segafredo Bayside offers an extensive cocktail menu and casual bites. Craft cocktails include Lincoln Road’s favorites such as the Aperol Spritz and the Pim’s Cup adding a local focus with an abundance of drinks made with fresh fruits, herbs and spices, and local Wynwood Brewery beers on tap.

The menu will reminisce of the Miami Beach location’s Italian light fares with tapas, salads, paninis, pizzas and wraps. Most dishes will incorporate a typically Italian ingredient such as prosciutto, speck, fresh burrata cheese and more. Fresh produce will carry through as well.

“Our Segafredo concept was ready to cross the bridge and Bayside is a waterfront location we thought was a great match to our vision,” states Voltarel. “Downtown Miami is destined to incredible growth and we want to be part of it as it becomes a destination not only to national and international visitors, but locals on special occasions such as concert or Heat game at the AAA, and young professionals and urban residents within just a few blocks from us.”

The decision to choose Bayside as Segafredo’s second location by the Graspa Group was based on Bayside Marketplace’s plans to expand and upgrade the mall site including common areas and waterfront plaza, the two-level parking garage as well as new retail space and the erection of the Skyrise observation tower.

Graspa Group will open a third location, yet to be solidified, for the Segafredo franchise within the Downtown, Midtown, Design District area by 2016.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, is especially excited to present The Marcus Roberts Trio on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 8:00 PM. This concert will take place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 students with I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either by calling 954.462.0222; or online at southfloridajazz.org.

A major force in jazz piano since age 21, Marcus Roberts has won the Thelonious Monk Piano Competition, a National Academy of Achievement award, and the Helen Keller Award. Featured on 60 Minutes (CBS) as “The Virtuoso,” Marcus is an American treasure. This appearance is with his well-honed trio of bassist Rodney Jordan and drummer Jason Marsalis.

Last year Marcus Roberts had his life and work featured on a moving segment labeled “The Virtuoso” on the celebrated CBS show 60 Minutes. The program traced Roberts’ life from his early roots in Jacksonville and his studies at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to his remarkable career as a modern jazz musician. Roberts is perhaps best known for the development of a unique approach to jazz performance that features nearly unfathomable left and right hand independence in improvisation.
His blind mother’s gospel singing and the music of the church became imprinted on Marcus’s musical style. Despite losing his sight at age five, he taught himself to play piano, but did not have a formal lesson until age 12. His talent was obvious. Later he studied classical piano at Florida State University under the tutelage of noted concert pianist and pedagogue Leonidas Lipovetsky. Of the many awards that Roberts ultimately received, the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement is the most meaningful to him.
A huge boost to his career occurred at age 21 when Wynton Marsalis asked him to join his band. After six years, however, it was time to become a leader. Roberts’ legacy of recorded music reflects his artistic versatility. His recordings include works for solo piano, duets with other instrumentalists, and conventional trio arrangements of jazz standards; as well as original material for trio, larger ensembles, and even symphonic compositions. He recorded his arrangement of Gershwin’s Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra with the Berlin Philharmonic. Roberts’ release of New Orleans Meets Harlem, Volume 1 in 2009 was the first on his own label, J-Master Records. Since then, he has been a prolific player and composer, releasing a very popular holiday recording, Celebrating Christmas; a nonet recording of an original suite, Deep in the Shed: A Blues Suite (Nov 2012); a collaborative CD of the Marcus Roberts Trio with Béla Fleck titled Across the Imaginary Divide (Rounder Records), and in 2013, three critically acclaimed CDs—From Rags to Rhythm, Together Again: Live in Concert, and Together Again: In the Studio. In 2014, Roberts released yet another suite of all-original music entitled Romance, Swing, and the Blues.
Roberts has long dedicated himself to the development of young musicians. In acknowledgment of his many contributions to music performance and education, The Juilliard School awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2014.

More Fun, More Friends, More Magic in 2016!
In its 39th year, the Miami Beach festival is the premier event of the Miami Design Preservation League – A free community cultural experience for everyone to enjoy from morning until night.

This year the Miami Design Preservation League welcomes friends AIA Miami, Bass Museum of Art, Fantasy Theatre Factory, HistoryMiami, Life Is Art, Miami Center of Architecture and Design, North Shore Historic District Neighborhood Association, Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association, Perez Art Museum Miami, South Florida Lindy Collective, South Florida Region Antique Automobile Club of America, The Original Miami Beach Antique Show, Viernes Culturales, Wolfsonian/FIU and more to Art Deco Weekend.

With friends like these, you can expect over-the-top everything at what’s become, over almost two generations, South Florida’s dazzling annual kickoff. It’s Art Deco Weekend (ADW), the January 15–17 festival of art and architecture on Ocean Drive between 5th and 13th streets—and, like a party hosted by your favorite friends, it’s not to be missed.

39 years ago, the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) made history by calling attention to the Art Deco buildings that lined Ocean Drive and filled much of South Beach by spotlighting them during a weekend festival.

It didn’t happen overnight, but it happened. The city’s beloved Art Deco architecture has not only been saved, it’s put Miami Beach on the worldwide map as a glamorous, tropical holiday destination and a dream-come-true place to live and do business. But historic preservation, like sand castles and barrier islands, requires constant vigilance to survive. Today, the MDPL, founded to save the Art Deco neighborhood, throws this community cultural festival to celebrate architecture, preservation, education, history, advocacy, art, entertainment and the Miami culture we all love.

In 2016, MDPL and friends provide more excitement and innovation than ever before. That promises festival goers (you!) more antiques, more art, more artisan vendors, more jazz, more dance, more libations, more history, lectures and education, more kid friendly interactive fun, more sightings of Deco-era characters and sexy vintage cars—MORE MAGIC – more everything you’ve come to love about ADW. Take a peek:
The Original Miami Beach Antique Show brings the Antique Design Pavilion and Speakeasy Lounge to the beach, showcasing and selling the finest, funnest antique, and retro Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern furniture and accessories.

* South Florida Region Antique Automobile Club of America celebrates 60 years by hosting more cars (and more memories) at the popular Classic Car Show on Saturday and Sunday.
* Life Is Art curates the Art Park at Art Deco Weekend. Don’t miss the live painting demonstrations and performance pop-ups at the Art Bar in Lummas park.
* South Florida Lindy Collective is committed to spreading the gospel of swing dancing. Dress the part, put on your dance shoes and join them on the beachside dance floor for 30 hours of live music and livelier swing under the palms or enjoy the show from the “ Starlight” Lounge.
* HistoryMiami, Miami Center of Architecture and Design and AIA Miami are a few of MDPL’s lecture partners, bringing to life the theme “The Art of Architecture” during lectures and forums in the Art Deco Museum.
* Bass Museum of Art, HistoryMiami and Fantasy Theatre Factory team up to educate kids so creatively they won’t know it’s happening. Speaking of happening, look for live performance, arts & crafts, music and tours.
* North Shore Historic District Neighborhood Association, showcases MiMo architecture and ongoing preservation efforts with tours, talks, education and displays. Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association will showcase a public art happening in historic Flamingo Park.
* Viernes Culturales uses live Cuban Afro music Friday night to draw attention to Little Havana’s historic buildings.
* A highlight of the weekend will be the Barbara Baer Capitman memorial dedication on Saturday afternoon. Join local dignitaries to honor the founder of the Miami Design Preservation League and the mother of the Art Deco District!

And there’s so much more: ‘The Art of Architecture “ photo exhibit, pet parade, a retro fashion show, street vendors, specialty tours, live music, history and surprises at every turn. The festival, virtually a non-stop weekend of events for all ages, is free and open to the public.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of Fridge Art Fair on 12/4/15

Fridge Art Fair is pleased to announce its third Miami Edition, The Fridge Fudge Pop, hosted at Holiday Inn Oceanside 43rd and Collins (4300 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL).

Fridge Art Fair’s philosophy is to make the art fair scene accessible to diverse exhibitors and visitors alike. “Our booth fees are low,” said Eric Ginsburg, the Artist and Founding Director known throughout the world for his Dog and Cat paintings. Admission is ten dollars but on the door policy is: “No one is ever turned away. Generous donations will help keep this a reality.”

Fridge Art Fair celebrates creative freedom and diversity, encouraging exhibitors to explore all possibilities within their spaces as, in the words of Fridge Curator Linda DiGusta, “exploration, energetic participation and enthusiastic support create transformative energy, rules kill spirit.” Exhibitors are drawn from the world art community and include dealers, collectives and unrepresented artists – many “regulars,” and some new to Fridge.

This year the Fair welcomes a major collaboration with Art Shape Mammoth, who will curate and present large-scale sculpture, performances – dance and movement artist Laura Gordon will work with the large-scale paintings of new Fridge artist Iliyan Ivanov as a backdrop and Anna Marie Shogren will dance a durational performance – and guest artists from Shanghai, China in addition to their core program.

Special presentations also include an exhibition by students of Virginia Erdie’s youth art program in Miami, a screening of Katherine Delaney’s documentary/love letter to the drag world, Charmed Life, and works of Kazuko Miyamoto and Eva LeWitt presented by Gallery 128, the Lower East Side fixture and magnet that hosted the inaugural Fridge Art Fair in May 2013.

Founder renowned artist Eric Ginsburg http://www.worldoferic.com will present his signature pet portraits and accept commissions to benefit BARC Animal Rescue in Brooklyn, NY – bring a photo of Fido or Fluffy and save a life! His work will be featured in the exhibition.

Fridge Art Fair, a play on “Freeze,” was born in 2013 on the Lower East Side, as a satellite of Frieze New York. The inaugural Fair was filled to capacity with exhibitors who answered Founder Eric Ginsburg’s challenge, “Can you fit into the Fridge?” at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The Fair has gathered a growing following of exhibitors, sponsors, and visitors through two more New York editions, as well as two previous Miami fairs in 2013 and 2014.

South Florida Knight Arts Challenge Challenge Winners 2015

PRESS RELEASE

53 ideas win $2.36 million in South Florida Knight Arts Challenge
Challenge winners helping to make art general in Miami

MIAMI – Nov. 30, 2015 –The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation tonight named 53 projects as winners of the Knight Arts Challenge – with ideas that will infuse South Florida with art from Miami Gardens to West Kendall, Key West to Hollywood.

A program of Knight Foundation, the challenge funds the best ideas for bringing South Florida together through the arts.

The 2015 winners, mostly small arts organizations, collectives and individual artists, will share $2.36 million. Their ideas range from bringing the stories of West Dade immigrants to stage in a children’s play, to highlighting artists of color in a December art fair, putting poems on sidewalks, launching a downtown jazz festival and blending art and technology through an art hack day.

“High-quality artistic experiences not only inspire, they help bind us to each other and to a common experience, which is critical to a region as diverse as ours,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president of Knight Foundation. “Together, these ideas gets us closer to making art general in Miami, to creating a community where art is available to everyone in all of our neighborhoods.”

With challenge funding, the 2015 winners will:

Highlight Miami as a crossroads for Latin America and the Caribbean with a festival celebrating Ibero-American literature, a “Borderless Caribbean” series that fosters an exchange between Miami and Caribbean contemporary artists, and a cultural exchange and performance with Havana students and members of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony;

Strengthen Miami’s indie film scene with a screenwriter roundtable where filmmakers can receive feedback, an innovative film series on how the brain interprets music and a new publication to cover the industry;

Foster the next generation of creatives by holding music boot camps during teacher workdays, preparing teens for music industry careers with a beats academy in Overtown, and teaching young girls to write and perform rock music at a summer camp; and

Explore climate change through the arts with an artist residency program aboard a sailboat, a dance festival along the waterfront and an interdisciplinary performance featuring five prominent local artists.

“Whether they offer a whimsical take on our city, or probe our region’s most challenging issues, Knight Arts Challenge winners offer a chance for everyone in South Florida to become more deeply engaged in our community through the arts,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation. “We hope you will take a moment to look at this year’s choices, participate in an event, donate to a project, and add your voice to our community’s cultural conversation.”

The full list of winners and their project ideas is below. More information is available at knightarts.org.

Also Monday, Miami Girls Rock Camp was named the winner of the Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award, the result of a text-to-vote campaign that ended Nov. 17. The campf was one of four small arts organizations up for $20,000, which is in addition to their Knight Arts Challenge grant and can be used for the artistic project of their choice. Knight created the People’s Choice Award to bring attention to small and emerging arts groups and their contributions to the city.

Knight Arts Champions Honored

At an awards event at the New World Center, Knight Foundation also named four cultural leaders as Knight Arts Champions, honoring their contributions with funds to distribute to a creative project of their choice. The 2015 Knight Arts Champions are:
Kareem Tabsch and Vivian Marthell, co-founders of O Cinema, the independent cinema launched with a Knight Arts Challenge grant and that now has three locations;
Alex Gartenfeld, chief curator for the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, who guided the institution through its founding and launch in its temporary space in the Design District; and
Rosa de la Cruz, who, through the de la Cruz Collection helps to send Design and Architecture High School and New World School of the Arts students on cultural field trips to New York and Europe respectively.

Knight Foundation has invested more than $122 million in the South Florida arts since 2005, including support for both large institutions to more deeply engage the public, and to propel grassroots efforts through the Knight Arts Challenge. Earlier this year, Knight announced that the challenge, originally launched in 2008, will continue for three more years through 2018.

There are only three rules for applying: 1) The idea must be about the arts; 2) The project must take place in or benefit South Florida; 3) The grant recipients must find funds to match Knight’s commitment. The best receive Knight Foundation funds. More than 10,000 ideas have been submitted over eight years.

Previous funding for large institutions has launched a new media program that includes the signature “Wallcasts” at the acclaimed New World Symphony campus, helped present Ibero-American films at the Miami International Film Festival, brings every Miami-Dade third-grader to the new Pérez Art Museum Miami, and will build a new high-tech recital hall at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, among other projects.

PRIZM is the producer of a cutting-edge art fair that is multidisciplinary in scope. The goal is to expand the spectrum of international artists from the African Diaspora and emerging markets at one of the most prestigious art festivals in the world.

Their mission is to promote the work of artists of color, who reflect global trends in contemporary art, through a blockbuster exhibit held during Art Basel/Miami. Workshops and special events will be organized throughout the year to advance the careers of local and regional artists. Prizm is also committed to the Miami cultural community and works to expand its visual arts landscape, nurture and educate its constituents and provide forums for cross cultural exchange.

In 2014, Prizm exhibited a dynamic group or contemporary artists during Art Basel/Miami at the Miami Center for Architecture and Design. Salient works were presented that highlighted the diversity evident in contemporary visual art practices today, including painting sculpture and mixed media installations.

Additionally, PRIZM features the work of emerging Miami-based artists of African descent, such as T. Eliot, and Asser Saint Val. These artists redefined their world and brought into focus socio-political and cultural issues pertinent to the people of African descent in Miami and beyond. The select artists are actively engaged in perpetuating Miami’s growth as a cultural hub.

Artist information:
The opening exhibit will highlight the works of Mexican fine and graffiti artist Ciler. This solo show, called “PONZOÑA,” is the second one he’s had in the U.S and prior to that his work has appeared in various galleries around the world including Barcelona, Italy, Mexico, London and New York City. Ciler’s unapologetic work is best known for the defacement and manipulation of existing images with an often-dark archaeological intent to unearth today’s dysfunctional society. His unique use of collages, paintings, drawings and installation work are filled with death, drama and violence.
