Internationally acclaimed artist Isaac Julian returns for a highly anticipated conversation moderated by Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Executive Director of The Bass. Together, they reflect on Julien’s groundbreaking video installation Vagabondia (2000), a recent gift from collectors Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz and now on view at the museum. The work was among the first to posit the museum as a space where suppressed stories and experiences can – and should – surface in their totality. Twenty-five years after its debut, we revisit the work and context in which it’s presented today.

animals that call the Museum home. Families can get creative making “Frightening Flights” with ghosts or witches that soar in the wind chute and designing a haunted village to take home.

On Saturday, October 25, the fun gets even bigger with Pumpkins, Paws and Protectors!
Families can decorate pumpkins, sponsored by Truly Nolen (spaces are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis), and meet real community heroes in the Touch-a-Truck Zone. Police officers, firefighters and their vehicles will be on site, along with K-9 demonstrations showcasing the bravery of first responders. From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Chewy Vet Care will host an interactive Vet Clinic, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers, practice empathy and learn how to care for pets and animals in need.

As part of the weekend festivities, MODS is proud to be a Pink Pumpkin site in partnership with CITY Furniture. Support CITY Furniture’s Pink Pumpkin campaign to spread breast cancer awareness by picking up a Pink Pumpkin bucket at the Museum. Buckets will be available October 25–26 for children 12 and under, while supplies last.

Costumes are encouraged. (For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, please avoid facemasks and toy weapons, including toy guns.)

All weekend long, step into PAW PatrolTM: Adventure Play, presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy VetCare, and discover the world of STEAM through your favorite heroic pups. Families can explore action-packed missions and enjoy paws-itively fun adventures. Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nickelodeon, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment.

Visit Adventure Bay with rescue pups – police officer Chase, firefighter Marshall, construction worker Rubble, pilot Skye and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” work together to protect the community on the TV show, families will work together to save the day with a can-do attitude and learn how real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy. Families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower, Jake’s Mountain and the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest rescue a snowboarder stuck in the snow and cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles.

Included with Museum admission. Visit mods.org/pumpkins to RSVP.

A Day of Four Sunsets presents a new body of work by Miami-based artist Dennis Scholl, exploring the poetics of space exploration through assemblages of NASA memorabilia. The exhibition takes its title from astronaut John Glenn’s experience of witnessing four sunsets as he orbited Earth in 1962, evoking themes of time, memory, and the sublime vastness of the cosmos. Scholl’s work, rooted in the language of historical artifacts and collective memory, arranges space exploration ephemera into compositions structured by the dodecagon — a recurring motif in his practice that represents cyclical time and cosmic order. Over the past decade, he has meticulously gathered NASA-related materials, including mission patches, declassified documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings, integrating them into intricate assemblages that reframe our understanding of humanity’s relationship with the unknown. Scholl’s work gives us an insight into his keen collector’s eye and his skill at design and storytelling. In Untitled (Viking Orbiter II), photographs of Mars captured using surface imaging are arranged in thoughtful compositions. Visitors will find themselves viewing a piece of history transported back to 1969 with the work Untitled (Man on Moon). This exhibition contains more than 14 works of art that immerse the viewer into the history and collective memory of outer space, the universe, and astronauts. From real space food to sculptures created using space gloves, to viewfinders with images of the universe, this exhibition will fascinate science, history and modern art enthusiasts alike.

Felice Grodin’s architectural training informs her drawings, intricately weaving together elements of imagination, the future, and the past. Where Do I Go From Here? features more than 10 new works, some of which were created during Grodin’s time as a Center 2025 Spring Artist in Residence. With meticulous care and references to ancient civilizations, Grodin renders lines into complex arrangements of circles and curves, creating dynamic three-dimensional forms and exploring the concept of mental boundaries. Her art transports viewers to a psychological realm reminiscent of maps, cities, landscapes, and speculative future worlds. These ink drawings on mylar can sometimes rely on chance, or automatism, liberating not only the creative process, but inviting viewers into the surreal.

Gothic Pop Prints by Miami artist Brian Reedy features more than 10 custom linoleum block prints. The Center commissioned Reedy to create a work about Lizzie Borden inspired by Lizzie the Musical, which will be performed Oct. 18 – Nov. 1 at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center. In addition to the Lizzie Borden print, the exhibition features the macabre and spooky iconography of hauntings, oddities, and the afterlife in an expressionist and graphic style. Reedy’s woodblock prints combine his eye for graphic design, the skill of European medieval woodcuts and Japanese woodblock prints into modern pop culture masterpieces. Reedy creates modern works of art using the painstaking process of block printing, the craft of hand carving wood blocks to transfer ink to paper. Brian’s expertise in this art form has provided a unique combination of traditional print making with pop-culture iconography and themes.

A guided tour of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. An artist talk will take place on Saturday, December 13, at 1 p.m. On Saturdays, November 15 and December 20, at 6 p.m., a free curator tour/Downtown Hollywood Art Walk will be conducted.

These exhibits were made possible through support from the City of Hollywood, Broward County Cultural Division, Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Max Chira and Family, State of Florida Division of Arts and Culture, National Endowment for the Arts, Community Foundation Broward, David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation, Josephine S. Jack Pierson: The Miami Years is the first exhibition devoted to exploring the city’s transformative impact on Pierson’s life and work. The artist’s initial excursion from New York City to Miami Beach in the winter of 1984 instigated many return visits over the years.

James Voorhies, Curator-at-Large at The Bass, will talk with the Massachusetts-born artist about how the quickly transforming art, fashion, and celebrity cultures of Miami Beach in the 1980s and 90s left an indelible influence on Pierson’s rich and multivalent practice.

Librarians unite to combat book banning, defending intellectual freedom on democracy’s frontlines amid unprecedented censorship in Texas, Florida, and beyond.

As an unprecedented wave of book banning is sparked in Texas, Florida, and beyond, librarians under siege join forces as unlikely defenders fighting for intellectual freedom on the front lines of democracy.

THE LIBRARIANS offers a rattling look at coordinated efforts to ban books. More importantly, it introduces viewers to the everyday and increasingly vital heroes pushing back: the librarians who sound the alarm to both legislative and grassroots attempts to pull books from school and public libraries.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Her talk will explore how these works reflect the complex social, political, and spiritual dynamics of migration, and how they blend the cultural heritage of immigrants with colonial influences to create a unique visual language of identity and adaptation.

Ananda Cohen-Aponte is an Associate Professor of History of Art at Cornell University and a recent Getty Fellow for the 2024-2025 academic year. The author of Heaven, Hell, and Everything in Between: Murals of the Colonial Andes and Reimagining Lost Visual Archives of Black and Indigenous Resistance, her research examines racial formation, cross-cultural exchange, and the legacies of colonialism in Latinx art.

SPARK is back for year nine, and YES, it’s your official permission slip to have the most fun you’ll ever have on a weekday. Think bold perspective shifts, radical kindness, and the kind of connections that actually last.

Three hundred amazing women show up ready for an interactive, inspiring day full of real talk and a shot of unapologetic confidence.

Our theme this year is GIVE ME A BOOST because being powerful isn’t just about how much we pour into others, it’s about letting ourselves be poured into, too. This year, we’re saying yes to help, yes to support, and yes to the energy that comes from women who want to see us win. We’ll give, we’ll receive, and we’ll walk out ready to take on the world with our cups overflowing.

Expect plenty of laughs, honest reflection, and those “aha!” moments that stick with you long after you walk out the door.

SPARK is all about immersive workshops, panels that challenge your thinking (in the best way), and a room packed with women who actually get it, because they’re living it, too. You’ll leave energized, equipped, and ready to make bold moves in every area of your life.

This is for you if:

You’re craving a real day with women who are authentic, accomplished, and uplifting.
You want leadership and networking skills without the boring, buttoned-up corporate vibe.

You’re ready for a reminder that you’re capable, worthy, and absolutely unstoppable.
Don’t wait, Miami is famous for showing up late, but your next-level self deserves better.

The gallery will host a public opening reception on Saturday, October 4, from 6-10 p.m., kicking off the exhibition, which will be on view through December 7, 2025.

At the center of ClownVamp’s installation is a bright pink robot that generates endless, AI-produced “junk mail” at the push of a button. Using a local AI model on an embedded NVIDIA Jetson computer, it prints surreal, gluttony-inspired images on 6×6 inch paper with no Wi-Fi or cloud, producing a continuous flood of algorithmic output.

The Junk Machine playfully and provocatively explores the promises and perils of artificial intelligence. As ClownVamp notes, “It can create beauty, humor, and engaging interactions, but it can also be industrialized into a mechanism for proliferation of past biases, capitalist imagery, and visual noise.” The exhibition invites viewers to confront how experimental AI tools are being transformed into engines of mass production, offering an experience that is both playful and unsettling.

Regenerative Symphony envisions a future reliant on recycling critical minerals. AI and generative audio-visual patterns create an immersive symphony of reuse, highlighting interdependence among electronics, renewable energy, and transportation.

QUANTUM LENS explores quantum technologies in three chapters: entanglement, probability, and tunneling. Created with leading UK quantum scientists, it combines virtual sculptures, immersive film, sound design, and CGI to reveal phenomena invisible to the naked eye.

MAD Arts, a museum, community hub and laboratory for art and technology, is proud to present Rose Tinted by RUTAMFI. The exhibition is on view through March 2026.

Rose Tinted is an immersive installation exploring the haunting allure of “nostalgia for a life not lived.” Drawing on the visual language of Slice of Life anime and Moe culture, RUTAMFI blurs the line between memory and media, inviting audiences to question whether the moments they long for are authentically their own or shaped by fantasy, desire, and cultural archetypes.

Born in Queens and raised in Forest Park, Georgia, RUTAMFI blends watercolor and digital media across character design, public art, and large-scale installations. Her practice centers underrepresented characters, often Black and female, engaging with themes of bias, mental health, and generational trauma. Rose Tinted continues her work in shaping Miami’s artistic landscape, crafting worlds that are playful, melancholic, and self-aware.

Workshop: Fabiola Larios: Who Are You Online?
Build your digital identity: SEO Toolkit for Artists + Cybersecurity Tips

Tech-centered artist and current Bakehouse Art Complex resident Fabiola Larios leads this practical, hands-on workshop designed to help artists take control of their digital selves. Participants will walk through a series of guided prompts to define their artistic identity, identify useful SEO keywords, and outline a strategy for a more discoverable, personalized online presence. The session also includes critical tips for scam detection and cybersecurity, empowering artists to better protect their data, image, and work. Titled AMOS, the performance unfolds as an improvised ritual featuring upright bass, looped vocals, and handmade percussion. Juxtaposing moments of swelling tension against unnerving calm, SOMA constructs a space where the body becomes both instrument and site of critical exploration, drawing the audience into an enduring struggle between rupture and release.

This program is free and open to the public, and is presented as part of the Knight Foundation Digital Innovation Lounge + LAB at Locust Projects.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition algo•ritmos (2 tienes santo pero no eres babalao) by william cordova, on view at Locust Projects, this panel discussion brings together scholar Dr. Terri Francis and curator Aldeide Delgado for a conversation on representations of resistance, identity, and self-definition in 20th-century television and film. Taking iconic shows like Good Times and ¿Qué Pasa, USA? as points of departure, the panel explores how popular media constructs and contests dominant narratives of race, class, and cultural belonging. Join us for an online presentation and discussion with Victor Deupi as he highlights his new book “Rada Photography: Mid-Century Architecture and Culture in South Florida and the Caribbean,” which focuses on photographers Anette and Rudi Rada’s work in Cuba and Puerto Rico.

In this first critical biography of the life and work of the Radas, two photographers working in South Florida and the Caribbean from approximately 1946 to 1975, architectural historian Deupi explores the lasting significance of the Radas in documenting the cities, buildings, landscapes, and people of the region during major social and economic transformations of the 20th century.

During the South Florida building boom of the 1950s, the Radas were highly sought-after photographers. Magazines, newspapers, and travel firms hired them to help advertise new houses and hotels, promoting the tropics and subtropics as a still-untouched paradise. In the Caribbean, Rudi Rada photographed new buildings intruding artistically and commercially into the natural environment while Annette Rada adopted a more ethnographic approach, photographing local people amid burgeoning mass tourism. Whether in South Florida, Cuba, or elsewhere in their travels, the work of the Radas captured postwar architectural evolution, as well as challenges faced by populations adapting to modernization.

Featuring a wealth of never-before-published photographs and material from several archives and collections, “Rada Photography” adds portrayals of the largely overlooked mid-century architecture of South Florida and the Caribbean to existing architectural photography in the United States and Latin America. The artistic output of Annette and Rudi Rada documents how architects and architecture in the region gave shape to architectural styles now known as Miami Modernism or Tropical Modern.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

Checkpoint Zoo documents a daring rescue led by a heroic team of zookeepers and volunteers, who risked their lives to save thousands of animals trapped in a zoo behind enemy lines in the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

In the early days of the Russian-Ukrainian war Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, was turned into a warzone. On one side of the battlefield was the invading Russian army, on the other side, the defending Ukrainians, and caught in between them, was a zoo called Feldman Ecopark.

More than just a zoo, Feldman Ecopark was an animal sanctuary that offered countless therapy programs to everyone from soldiers with PTSD to children with special needs. As the war ravaged on, and the shelling increased, it was clear that the bravery of the staff wouldn’t be enough to save the animals trapped inside. With the help of four young volunteers, these zookeepers would undertake a seemingly impossible mission – they would risk life and limb to evacuate over 5,000 animals, including scores of dangerous predators, and deliver them to safety.

Unleash your inner scientist with messy hands-on experiments, meet animal ambassadors who dig, crawl and slime their way through life and discover how our Life Sciences team cares for the amazing creatures that call MODS home. Create your own muddy masterpieces, stretch and splatter sticky slimes and uncover their gooey secrets under a microscope. Beginning September 12, explore the PAW PatrolTM: Adventure Play traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and sponsored by Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy Vet Care. Based on the preschool series PAW Patrol®, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nickelodeon, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment. Visit Adventure Bay and meet the rescue pups, each inspired by a real-world job – there’s police officer (Chase), firefighter (Marshall), construction worker (Rubble), fearless pilot (Skye) and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” work together to protect their community on the TV show, families visiting MODS will work together to save the day and learn about how real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy. On select days, Chewy Vet Care will also host an interactive Vet Clinic, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers by practicing empathy and learning how to care for pets and other animals in need. AMOUT THE FILM
On September 5, 1966, John Lennon headed to Almería, Spain to star in Richard Lester’s 1967 British black comedy How I Won the War, marking his first non-musical acting role.

Based on Patrick Ryan’s 1963 book of the same name, the docu-drama-style film followed the mishap pence of a troop of soldiers, the 4th Musketeers during WWII. Fitted in glasses, which would become his signature look, Lennon stars as Gripweed, alongside Michael Crawford (Lieutenant Goobody), Roy Kinnear (Clapper), and Lee Montague as the corporal.
