Lecture – Friends or Rivals? Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and the Genesis of the Bass “Coronation”
Thursday, October 8, 7:00-8:00pm
The Bass Museum’s Coronation of the Virgin is the only recorded collaborative panel painting by Sandro Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, two of fifteenth- century Italy’s most sought after creators of religious imagery. The work is a testament to Botticelli’s excellence in the portrayal of beautiful figures, and Ghirlandaio’s mastery at recording individual character. This talk will present the Bass Coronation within the context of Renaissance rivalry.
