Bakehouse Art Complex donation drive for Lotus House Thrift 11/13/09

The Bakehouse Art Complex will host a donation drive for Lotus House Thrift on November 13th 2009, 6-10pm.
The Bakehouse Art Complex is hosting its ‘second Friday’ event at its 33,000 square foot facility on November 13th, 2009. The event will feature 2 new BAC artist exhibitions as well as the open studios of over 60 of Miami’s premiere emerging and mid-career artists. The Bakehouse Art Complex’s exhibition opening receptions are always free to the public.
The BAC is asking that any patron who would like to attend the opening reception to bring donations of new and gently used clothing, linens, beds, tables, chairs, loveseats, TVs and other small appliances, dishes, kitchen items and other household goods. All donations from this evening will be collected at the door and go directly to the Lotus House Thrift. All the proceeds from Lotus House Thrift help fund shelter, meals, education, counseling, health services, job readiness training, social services, and relocation assistance to homeless women and children. The thrift store is located at 203 NW 36th Street, Miami.
The Lotus House’s distinctive pink truck will be parked outside of the Bakehouse Art Complex accepting donations from 6-10pm the night of November 13th. All donations are tax-deductable.
Attendance at the BAC opening receptions are consistently around 300 people, if everyone brings a donation, we can truly make a difference in the lives of women and children in need.
A quiet enclave in the heart of one of Miami’s poorest neighborhoods providing shelter and support, the Lotus House offers a sanctuary from life on the streets – a place where the minds, bodies and spirits of women & infants most in need are supported and nurtured.
Established in 1985, Bakehouse Art Complex is a non-profit 501(C) (3) organization dedicated to attracting emerging and mid-career artists in South Florida to a workplace that provides affordable studios, exhibition galleries, education and professional development opportunities. The Bakehouse Art Complex is located at 561 NW 32nd Street Miami, Florida 33127 in the Wynwood Arts District. Dogma Grill Gives Thanks With A Cornucopia Of Turkey Dogs Supporting Camillus House 11/16-22/09

Dogma_Grill_1camillus_logo
CaliDog
This holiday season Dogma Grill has found a way the restaurant and its clients can give thanks. For each hot dog purchased the week leading up to Thanksgiving, one turkey dog will be donated to Camillus House to feed the homeless.

From Monday, November 16th to Sunday November 22th at the trendy Biscayne eatery, each hot dog sold will be accounted for and an equal amount of turkey dogs will be dressed in their buns and served to the poor and homeless finding shelter at Camillus House, a Miami non-profit organization providing humanitarian services. The delivery of the turkey dogs will take place the week of Thanksgiving.

“We are delighted to be able to give back to the community and partner with a great organization such as Camillus House” stated Dogma Grill owner, Jeffrey Akin “Dogma is not only about great food and good times—we also want it to be a place with a social conscious – that’s one of our dogmas. This year we have been lucky to have the support of some of our vendors that have enabled us to provide this special giveaway promotion – we are thankful to them as well.”

Recently described by the Miami Herald as…”somewhere between Elvis and iphones.. like a malt shop serving sushi or a diner dishing caviar” Dogma’s “frank philosophy” has catapulted the funky brand into national news and earned kudos including #1 “Top Bang for the Buck” from the Zagat Guide in both 2007 and 2008.

One of the few places in South Florida where a delicious quality $5.00-$6.00 lunch is still a reality, Dogma’s specialty franks (prices range from $2.95 – $5.95) tempt taste buds with more than 15 creative combinations such as the Cali – freshly sliced avocado, grilled bacon, sour cream, extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper; El Macho – a Miami-inspired treat that crosses cultural borders with spicy salsa cream, spicy brown mustard, melted cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, chopped onion and fresh jalapeno peppers; and the Pomodoro – topped with homemade bruschetta, special Dogma sauce and grated parmesan, among others.

The family-friendly restaurant also offers a variety of tasty alternatives including grilled chicken wraps, veggie and turkey dogs, fresh salads and a kid’s menu. New menu items are Certified 100% natural beef hamburgers and veggie burgers. Dogma also scores points for its home-style potato chips and French fries, served either plain, tossed with garlic or topped with cheese or chili cheese.

The one-to-one Thanksgiving giveaway is available all day at Dogma Grill located at 7030 Biscayne Boulevard from November 19th to the 25th. Dogma Grill is open daily from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. For more information please go to www.dogmagrill.com.

Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County for 49 years. Established by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd in 1960, Camillus House has grown steadily over the years from a small overnight shelter into a full-service center for persons who are poor and homeless.

Cremata Gallery presents Diego de Souza + Luis Manuel Fernandez 11/13/09

Cremata Gallery presents Diego de Souza + Luis Manuel Fernandez
Friday, November 13th, 2009. 7:30 p.m.
Left: Diego de Souza. “Llegada”. 2009. Mixed media on canvas. 60″ x 40″. Right: Luis Manuel Fernandez. “Hasta la Giraldilla se fue!!!” 2009. Bronze
Opening reception: Friday, November 13th, 2009. 7:30 p.m.
Location: Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135
Dates: From November 13th through 30th, 2009
Admission: Free

A dialogue between the works of Diego de Souza and Luis Manuel Fernandez: one exhibition, two artists, one Argentine and one Cuban, two different ways of approaching art. Diego’s paintings, with his expressive use of color, light, transparency, and his free and imaginative strokes, comes very close to pure abstraction.
In contrast with Luis Manuel’s sculptures: precise, figurative and full of symbolic realism. The exhibition is the dichotomy between two artists, but it’s also full of coincidences – both produce the type of work that we want to be surrounded with in our private and personal spaces: classy, ingenious, elegant.
Diego uses his experiences in photograms and scenography to support the development of his painting. The expressive quality of his experiences and observations is translated to canvas in both an imaginative and an emotional way, his exuberance and passion are contagious. His brush strokes and visions are his own, an expression of his heritage, taste, and the people with whom he interacts.
Luis Manuel constructs visual emblems in bronze as realistic as the Giraldilla in a raft, “Hasta la Giraldilla se fue!” or the play on words brought to us in “Marea alta” and “Marea baja”. Unlike the formal poses of classical sculpture, larger bronzes tend to be relaxed, their uninhibited, languid bodies reclining comfortably or sitting in a chair. He expresses the meaning of “being alive” as a physical reality. An original in his own way, he never views another artist’s work as a template to follow.
Diego and Luis Manuel are mid-career artists in full creative maturity, with well-deserved professional recognition from many quarters, residing in collections from New York and Miami to South America and Paris. Diego comes from the prestigious National University of the Arts in Cuyo, Argentina. Luis Manuel is from Las Tunas, called the City of Sculpture, and graduated from the famous Cubanacan National School for the Arts in Havana, Cuba.

TO PORTRAY POWERLESSNESS OF PATIENTS
WITH LOU GEHRIG’S DISEASE

WHO/WHAT: The ALS Association Florida Chapter’s Piece by Piece display of 150 limbless mannequins, each bearing the name of an ALS victim, represents a life that has been affected by the devastating disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. By using graphic imagery to act as a metaphor for the destructive effects of ALS, the display is meant to grab the public’s attention and create awareness. The gripping message: “Lou Gehrig’s Disease is stealing our loved ones piece by piece.”

Since January, the Piece by Piece Tribute Display has traveled to more than 20 locations around the state of Florida, and is now making its debut in Miami. Local volunteers will set up and take down the mannequins at each exhibit, hoping their efforts will help raise awareness of the deadly disease. Steve Franks, 50, who has been living with the disease for six years, delivers the mannequins to each stop throughout Florida.*

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes its victims to become completely paralyzed, gradually stealing their ability to move any of their limbs. The disease affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. When the motor neurons die, a patient’s muscles waste away. The patient is robbed of the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. Upon diagnosis, patients are given only two to five years to live. There is no cure for ALS.

Visit www.StealingPieces.org for more information about the campaign and to see photos of the Piece by Piece Tribute Display.

Celebrate The Repeal
of the $5 Entrance Fee
Date: Saturday, November 14, 2009
Time: noon
Location: Jimbo’s Shrimp Shack
Suggestion: Join your fellow friends of Jimbo volunteers in the clean up effort.
The city of Miami has stopped charging a fee of $5 to every car that passes the toll gate on Virginia Key on the way to Jimbo’s.
Join the celebration on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at noon at Jimbo’s!
To All Friends of Jimbo,
The city has agreed to rescind the $5 fee (penalty) on Jimbo’s customers. If you pay the $5 fee at the toll booth, have your receipt signed at Jimbo’s for a full refund when you exit.
Send an email to city officials thanking them for making this change, which was clearly unfair to Jimbo.
Now the city is pressuring Jimbo to keep the place clean and neat, so we’re all lending a hand to get rid of some of the refuse and trash.
Thank you!
Pass the word to friends of Jimbo. We’ll see you all there.

eMERGE Fashion Trade Show to Showcase Emerging Brands 4/27-28/10

Fashion Trade Show to Showcase Emerging Brands

eMERGE Trade Show announces details for their April 2010 fashion trade show. This is a fashion trade show geared towards the hottest upcoming and emerging brands in streetwear, surf, skate and contemporary markets for men and women.

eMERGE trade show is having its 1st annual event, which will be held in Miami, Florida on April 27 and 28th, 2010. The show will be held at the beautiful Hilton Miami Downtown, overlooking the intracoastal waterways and downtown Miami. eMERGE targets retailers that are in search of for the hottest apparel and clothing companies an outlet for the world to view their artwork.

Buy Your Tickets here:

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Most conventional trade shows do not focus their attention on independent companies that are yearning for exposure in the fashion market. eMERGE is here to assist these brands in growing their business to become the next big “IT” FACTOR. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

Founded by two individuals who understand and have been in the same position as the brands that will attend eMERGE, so they understand their positions and know that they want to prosper if given the opportunity to do so. One of the founders runs a clothing company and knows how much is needed to run an effective brand. Constantly being put in a position to come up with obscene amounts of funds that was unobtainable to gain exposure. eMERGE will allow clothing companies to showcase their goods in a Metropolitan city for a low, cost effective price. Retailers will be introduced to brands that are usually overlooked at major trade shows. eMERGE will give them both a platform to meet in order to grow their businesses; to bring what is hidden into plain view.

eMERGE is pleased to announce that a portion of all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and Kids off Streets.

Harnessing the Power of Web 2.0 Networking, ‘Social Media for Social Change’ (SM4SC) Hosts Event to Support South Florida’s Homeless

Social Media for Social Change Miami, the South Florida branch of SM4SC, an online grassroots movement started by Boston social media professional Gradon Tripp to rally social media users and leaders to support non- profit organizations and cause-based campaigns, will host its first fundraiser on November 19 at 8:00 PM at Club 50 at the Viceroy.

All proceeds will go to Camillus House, a non-profit organization that provides food, shelter, housing, rehabilitative treatment, and health care to men, women and children who are struggling with poverty in South Florida. Corporate sponsors participating in the fundraiser include LockerBlogger, Fusebox, Empressr, InfiniMedia, Salt River Studio, ADSUCH, and Club 50.

SM4SC has garnered support from thousands of Web 2.0-savvy individuals and corporations across the United States to raise funds for various charities. SM4SC differs from other fundraising and campaign organizations because they opt to use blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other web-based tools to disseminate information and generate support, rather than more traditional means.
“SM4SC is powered by the influence that individual people have within their own online communities to spread positive messages and facilitate change,” said Gradon Tripp, founder of SM4SC and DesignBoston.org. “We’re utilizing the communal and viral aspects of the Internet, which can turn a simple YouTube video or blog post into something that touches millions, to help fix real- world problems.”

Locust Projects presents Francesca DiMattio Decollage 11/14/09

DiMattio_Decollage
Francesca DiMattio
Decollage
Opening reception: November 14th, 7-10pm
Through December 30, 2009

Locust Projects is pleased to present Decollage, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Francesca DiMattio. Decollage describes the process DiMattio uses — of cutting, tearing and peeling away images – to explore collage through large banners and a site-specific mural.

DiMattio is known for her large-scale paintings depicting spaces where architectural and modernist forms, sculptural figures, and art historical elements collide with one another. Using various painting techniques, the artist creates the illusion of collage in these works. For her exhibition at Locust Projects, DiMattio will create an installation that continues her exploration of the spaces where disparate elements meet — by employing actual collage for the first time.

In banners that measure up to ten feet in height, Xerox images are glued on top of one another, and then peeled away in parts to reveal new forms and relationships. The source materials come from DiMattio’s archive of magazines such as Home and Garden and National Geographic, found books, and reproductions of the artist’s paintings. Images are lacerated into strips and cut into quilt patterns, only to be re-adhered using weaving and scrap-booking techniques. Each artwork simultaneously illustrates the diametrical concepts of building and collapsing space. The pieces are further accentuated with acrylic and watercolor paint.

A site-specific mural will also be created at Locust Projects, drawing inspiration from the culture and scenery of the Miami area. This work is composed of clips of the sun, beach chairs, ocean, ships and construction cranes. Rather than present a coherent narrative, however, the images are fragmented, broken, and interrupted. Each element is given equal weight, radically altering traditional hierarchies of value and forming a powerful piece that vacillates between abstraction and figuration.

Francesca DiMattio (b. 1981) lives and works in New York. She has had solo exhibitions at Salon 94 in New York, and LAXART in Los Angeles. She is currently part of the group exhibition Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture at The Saatchi Gallery in London and will present a solo show, ArtWall at ICA Boston in 2010. Dimattio’s work is in the permanent collection of the Miami Art Museum.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. Special thanks to Salon 94, New York. Design: Venture Architects.

Sasha returns to Sundance 11/8/09

sashaback400
There are DJs who turn up, play records & make people dance… and there are producers who make the dancefloor-igniting records those DJs would kill for. Few people in dance music can do both & Sasha is the leader of the pack. He simply makes good records sound better, great records sound awesome & everything he plays into his own. Exactly a year ago at Sundance, Sasha engineered a 4 hour journey of emotion from his very first song, till the lights turned on. Those who were there as deejays, learned that it wasn’t about playing the biggest & loudest records, one behind another. Those who were there as clubbers, felt & heard something they seldom experience… Art in the form of music. The painter, sculptor or who ever you wanted him to be, was Sasha. On Sunday, Nov.8th experience Sasha’s return to Sundance along side Dj Three.

Skip the masses & hurdle the velvet rope… get your Sasha Sundance TICKETS here.

The Art Of Influence and The Influence Of Art

“The Art Of Influence” And “The Influence Of Art”
Two Unique Projects – One Unique Art Exhibition
At County Hall
Thirty running feet of tapestry panels – a montage of artwork and narratives created for both “THE ART OF INFLUENCE” and “THE INFLUENCE OF ART” will be on exhibit in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center building, 111 NW First Street, Miami, FL. The display will be up for the entire month of November.

For “The ART of INFLUENCE”, under the guidance of Center for Folk and Community Art artists Dena Stewart and Stewart Stewart, Elementary School youngsters, Middle School youth, and Senior High School teenagers learned how ART INFLUENCES the way we live our lives and spend our money by deconstructing ads and analyzing pictures and paintings. They also learned how to use ART to INFLUENCE others by writing their own advertising copy that included both positive and negative aspects for a real or imaginary product, as well as by creating their own ART to entice the public to want their product.

For “THE INFLUENCE OF ART – We Are Artists, Too!”, developmentally disabled adults (ages 18 to 68 years) discovered the artist within by creating artwork about their daily activities and what they would like the public to know about them and the meaningful things in their lives.

Additionally, for the “Influence of Art” project, deaf and hard of hearing teenagers used ART to express how bullying affects them.

These tapestry panels will tour schools, libraries, and community centers to stimulate dialogue and create an awareness of the importance of ART in communicating feelings and addressing issues.

January 9th Opening Reception, Charles DuBack, Translation of Nature. 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
RSVP: rsvp@miriamfernandes.com

January will launch the prized work of New England artist, Charles DuBack, from his series, Nature Translation. Charles DuBack (b.1926) first visited Maine from New York City in the mid-1950s; a seminal period when New York post-war modernism arrived in Maine.

Coming to Maine in the mid-1950s provided a turning point in Charlie DuBack’s artistic career. Like many New York artists, DuBack originally planned to spend a summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture but eventually established a life-long love of the Maine landscape.

A devoted modernist inspired by the earlier paintings of Picasso and Matisse, DuBack was equally involved in the emerging Color Field and Pop Art movements of the day. The critical acclaim for these early works later translated into love of patchwork colors and bright brushwork in watercolors.

With a minimum of bravura brush strokes, DuBack deftly describes fir trees, sunlight glinting on water, or the rising and the setting sun. DuBack, who had shared a New York studio with sculptor Bernard Langlais and painter Alex Katz in the 1950s, was part of a group of artists who all settled in mid-coast Maine as summer residents.

Over the years, DuBack, developed an especially intimate knowledge of the Maine woodlands. With an eye for defining color and shape, he translates that visual vocabulary into works that convey the vibrancy and animation of nature. DuBack’s recognition amongst his contemporaries reflects his years of experience and great potential. Charles DuBack’s Nature Translation will be carried through January 30th, 2010, exhibiting works from 1952 to 2008.

Fredric Snitzer Gallery is proud to present Michael Vasquez in his second solo exhibition titled How the Land Lies. In his first solo exhibition, Family Jewels, Vasquez presented a personal portrait of himself in a single parent upbringing, complemented by the adoption of friends and social personalities that seemed to replace a missing father figure.

How the Land Lies illustrates a geographical portrait of suburban locations and symbolic traits carried by members of a neighborhood gang. An earned and received red bandana in The Acceptance is weighted with the ideology of membership and loyalty. Michael Vasquez reflects on what it means to be connected to an organization that survives on taking pride in being territorial, controlling and intimidating. How to Stand for Something and The Fence Line accentuate personal and territorial delimitations with a signature stance and graffiti marks. How the Land Lies describes the influences of locality in a social setting and the inherited recognition of a belief system.

Michael Vasquez was born in 1983 in St. Petersburg FL. His work has been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art; North Miami, FL, Mobile Museum of Ar; Mobile, AL, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art; Kansas City, MO and Locust Projects, Miami, FL. Vasquez currently lives and works in Miami, FL

Bakehouse Art Complex bac:23 Programming Art Basel 2009 12/3-6/09

The Bakehouse Art Complex presents its programming lineup for Art Basel 2009
The BAC’s 33,000 square foot facility will be transform itself into bāc:23 from December 3-6 2009 to coincide with Art Basel and it’s various satellite fairs. The name bāc:23 is derived from the number of years the Bakehouse Art Complex has had it roots in the Wynwood Arts District and has been serving the community as the premiere institution for the visual arts in Miami. Now in its 23rd year, the BAC is at capacity with Miami’s hottest artists.
bāc:23 features the artwork and studios of over 70 local Miami artists. Guests are encouraged to visit the studios & speak with the resident artists. All artwork in the studios are for sale directly from the artists themselves. This is the only fair in town that guests can get a first-hand look at the artistic process while finding out the story behind a particular piece. The BAC will be open every day from 10-6pm with breakfast served daily. Start your Basel day off with coffee and baked goods at the BAC, free parking available!
In addition to the 70 artist studios, the Bakehouse Art Complex also houses 2 separate exhibition galleries. In its 2,600 square foot Main Gallery, BAC artists confront the idea of the overwhelming sensory qualities of Art Basel in Sensory Overload. Based on the traditional five senses, touch hear, see, smell, and taste, BAC artists cross and blend these senses together to create an experience of a sequence of synesthetic encounters, attacking one sense and at the same time evoking another.
The BAC presents a small works exhibition 5X7 in its Swenson Gallery. All of the work measures 5X7 or 7X5. The show will consist of a variety of media, from painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber art and on. There is sure to be something to please every aesthetic. Patrons are encouraged to purchase these small, unique works of art at $100.00 each. When a guest purchases a piece from this exhibition, a photo will be taken of them and their new purchase. The picture will then be hung on the wall in place of the piece, thus becoming part of the exhibition.
The Opening Reception of the Sensory Overload and 5X7 will be November 28th, 2009 from 7-10pm. BAC invites the public to browse the 70 resident artists’ studios, visit the 2 exhibitions, enjoy drinks and music from The Spam Allstars. This event is FREE.
For more information or images, contact Lauren Wagner at 305.576.2828 or www.bacfl.org.

The Breeder (Athens) presents a new installation by Dutch artist Marc Bijl, whose works are often statements about today’s social structures, misusing slogans, logos, symbols and codes, and thereby reflecting upon nationalism, terrorism or religious extremism. Galleria Raffaella Cortese (Milan) presents recent works of Anna Maria Maiolino, who is central to the development of late-20th-century art in Brazil and Latin America. Maiolino shows new videos and photographs discussing the role of women in a patriarchal society.

Galeria Salvador Diaz (Madrid) will present works by Teresa Margolles from the performances held at the Mexican Pavillon of this year’s Venice Biennale, including photography, cloths soaked in blood and mud from Mexican crime scenes together with a new video work by Marina Nunez. Galerist (Istanbul) exhibits two established Turkish artists, Mustafa Hulusi and Haluk Akakce. A new series of photo-realist oil-on-canvas-paintings by Hulusi will be juxtaposed to a presentation of Akakce’s sculptures, which marks an exploration of a totally new medium for the artist.

The Annet Gelink Gallery (Amsterdam) mounts a group show whose emphasis lies on story-telling, featuring paintings and videos by Meiro Koizumi, new conceptual works by Ryan Gander and collages and videos by David Maljcovic. Harris Liebermann (New York) presents a two-artist project with Simon Dybbroe Moller and Karl Haendel uniting their different approaches to art making. Galerie Mezzanin (Vienna) presents a dialogue of painted portraits by Katrin Plavcak and photographic works by Mandla Reuter, both artists sharing an interest in basic questions concerning image production, history and cultural politics.

Another group exhibition is on view at the booth of Nature Morte / Bose Pacia (New Delhi / New York) featuring works by three South Asian artists Jagannath Panda, Radhika Khimji and Suhasini Kejriwal, spanning several media – from large-scale paintings by Panda to the playful sculptures by Kejriwal to meticulous work on paper by Khimji. Prometeogallery (Milan) installs a group show on social investigation and historical transformation featuring a film by Rossella Biscotti, a sculpture by Regina Jose Galindo and a photographic series by Santiago Sierra, who illustrates the passing of time through a documentation of gypsies’ teeth. A dialogue between Miriam Backström, Gardar Eide Einarsson and Superflex at the booth of Nils Staerk (Copenhagen) focuses on the concept of the art work challenging the role of an artist in contemporary society.

Reena Spaulings Fine Art (New York) brings together Matias Faldbakken, Claire Fontaine and K8 Hardy, each one an artist who has elaborated a particular way of interrogating the use of value in popular culture. Regina Gallery (Moscow) mounts a group show featuring Sergey Bratkow and Claire Fontaine both representing the debate about capitalist society in the International context. Bratkov’s photographs portraying every day life since the collapse of the Soviet Union are opposed to Fontaine’s new neon piece “Amerika” in their K. font.

Peres Projects (Berlin/Los Angeles) mounts a solo show of new works by Dan Attoe, presenting paintings and neon sculptures. His neon sculptures are illuminated renderings of his line drawings, which are drawn from the world depicted in his paintings, presenting road-side motels, dive bars, cartoon animals and imagined conflicts. Franco Soffiantino Gallery (Torino) installs a site-specific solo presentation of works by Michael Beutler, consisting of a 3,000-square-meter large rolled-up carpet. The viewer only sees the open end of the carpet, revealing the pattern and the different materials and colors woven into it, hinting at what there would be to see if the carpet would be unrolled.

SKE Gallery (Bangalore) shows a dialogue of two Indian artists by presenting a skeleton of a wooden boat by Sudarshan Shetty and a video projection of water, creating an image that is somewhere between a wave and a cloud, by Avinash Veeraraghavan. Three emerging Isreali artists – Sharon Ya’ari, Ofir Dor and Haim Almoznino – have a group presentation at the booth of Sommer Contemporary Art (Tel Aviv) each working in different media and each representing different stages in their career.

In her solo show at the booth of The Third Line (Dubai), Iranian artist Monir Sharhroudy Farmanfarmaian will install a new mirror mosaic, a medium that has been used in Iran as an architectural ornamentation since the eighteenth century. The installation will transform the space into an experience reflecting colour and light, continually shifting in response to the movement of the visitors. Vitamin Creative Space (Guangzhou) presents a joint project titled “Interior,” created by two Chinese artists Duan Jianyu and Huang He. The paintings by Duan and the installation by Huang form this “interior” space and present a border where elements from daily life meet fantasy.

After its highly successful debut in 2008 as a booth-based event Red Dot Art Fair is pleased to announce its return to the Wynwood Art District in Miami. Red Dot is located directly adjacent to Art Miami and among other high profile fairs that run concurrent to Art Basel Miami Beach.

Our opening reception on Wednesday, December 2nd will benefit GreenMiami, a project initiated by Mayor of Miami – the Honorable Mr. Manuel Diaz, and endorsed by the entire City Commission. All donations collected during the reception will go directly to the City of Miami Tree Trust Fund to support future tree plantings. We hope to help the City of Miami achieve its goal to increase the City’s tree canopy to 30% by 2017.

Red Dot will proudly display Eco – Totems, an art installation created specifically for our event by Luis Valenzuela. The installation consists of recycled plastic bottles and solar panels and will emphasize our efforts to bring increased awareness to important environmental needs. Eco – Totems will be accompanied by hand cast glass sculptures created by Beth Rekow as a part of a project curated by Eileen Braziel.

Under the direction of Red Dot owner George Billis, approximately 40 international modern and contemporary art galleries will feature painting, sculpture, photography and works on paper. The luxurious layout of the 30 thousand square foot tented venue will provide visitors with a sophisticated and friendly environment to view artwork and network with art dealers.

Red Dot Fair strives to create a boutique fair for galleries specializing in emerging, mid-career and established artists that seek to present work of lasting value and beyond current trends. Red Dot Miami 2009 will again feature galleries selected to provide collectors of all levels with a broad range of works from around the world.

Moroccan Writer Abdellah Taia at Books and Books 11/11/09

Miami Logo2
MOROCCAN WRITER ABDELLAH TAIA @ BOOKS AND BOOKS
265 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2009, 6:30 P.M.

MOROCCAN WRITER ABDELLAH TAIA will present the recent English and Spanish translations of his novel Salvation Army. He will discuss his work with Ralph Heyndels and Gema Perez (University of Miami) during this trilingual event (English, Spanish, French).
Abdellah Taia is a young Moroccan writer and intellectual figure living in Paris and writing in French. He is the author of several novels, most recently L’Armée du Salut and Une Mélancolie arabe (Éditions du Seuil), the co-author with Frédéric Mitterand of the texts of a photography book entitled Maroc 1900-1960 (Actes Sud), and the editor and introducer of Lettres à un jeune Marocain (Éditions du Seuil). As the first openly gay writer intervening publicly in Morocco itself (actually the first in the entire Arab world) and whose novels are distributed in that country, he has been ranked by the influential Moroccan weekly magazine Tel Quel as one of the three “icons” of contemporary Moroccan culture and society. He is also a vigorous defender of tolerance, cultural and civic openness, democracy and human rights in his native country and everywhere. Novels by Abdellah Taia have already been translated in Spanish, Dutch and Italian, and Salvation Army just appeared in English, translated by Frank Stock and prefaced by Edmund White, at M.I.T. Press. Taia’s “calmly transgressive work” has been recognized as a “major addition to the new French literature emerging from the North African Arabic diaspora”, as it combines narrative and rhetorical complexity with the subjective genuine tonality of personal story telling and auto-fictional apparent confession.
This is a novel about love in all his forms. A Moroccan boy’s love for his mother (.)The boy’s love for his older brother (.) About the boy’s love of the French language and literature (.) This is (.) a book about the love of men for men(.) This a book about a boy’s love for his past. This is also a book about fear. (.) If the secret of great fiction (.) is “defamiliarization”, making everything known seem strange, then nothing could be more accomplished and persuasive than this mysterious novel. The boy himself is foreign to us, our world is foreign to him, everyone is a foreigner in love with the “other” (whether that be a Swiss man or an older brother). Despite the simplicity and clarity of Taia’s style, we sense how sophisticated he is – that this is a simplicity that only intelligence (.) can buy. Not only has the language been chastened, but the selection of scenes to show and to exclude has also been subjected to a draconian editing process. Finally, this is a book about poverty. About sexual tourism, its benign side (.) and its cruel side. But Abdellah Taïa doesn’t spell this out. His is an ecstatic and generous nature who lives in the particular, who shies away from generalizations. No matter how often he might be disappointed or wounded he is ever (.) prepared to receive that wonderful, transforming thing: reciprocal affection. This book is a clear stream; drink from it deeply. Edmund White
This event is organized in conjunction with the U.M. Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the French Cultural Services (Miami office), with the support of the U.M. Queer Studies Research Group and the U.M. Africana Studies Program, along with the Alliance Française de Miami-Fort Lauderdale.. Open to the public. Free admission.
