The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new show “Inverses,†a mind-bending exhibit by acclaimed Venezuelan photographer Rodolfo Vanmarcke on February 12, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127.
The exhibition features 15 photographs from “Inverso-sÃmil†and “Inverso-sÃmil en Clave Cóncava,†two renowned photograph series shot by Vanmarcke. Both series are designed to challenge the natural way we observe our everyday world by means of a devious visual experiment; Vanmarcke reshapes common landscapes and urban scenes by “maliciously†inverting his captured images and using (as close accomplices) the reflection of rainwater puddles and a magnifying glass.
The result is a stunning visual effect that challenges us to view the common in a new way, combining two sides of a coin in a single image — the right way up and the wrong way down, the real and the imagined, the possible and the impossible, the within and the without; unthinkably merging multiple scenarios that cause confusion in the viewer when discovering them. At the end, images that appear to be digital manipulation are actually real photographs preconceived to exist upside down, inside out.
By integrating documentary photography with surrealism, Vanmarcke forces the viewer to untiringly pursue the regulatory intervention of reason, arising in him a fight between his perceptions vs. recognition.
In conclusion, these series inverse the natural order of things to play with the implausible factor in the viewer: Perception is subjective and images that seem to be true, are not necessarily so. It’s up to the viewer to decide.
