Alonso to Perform Classical Concert Music Written in Cuba During the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries
Renowned soprano and musicologist Virginia Alonso will perform a free concert of classical music written in Cuba during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University. Open to the public, the concert is coordinated by the Interdisciplinary Arts Program, Nova Southeastern University Fischler School of Education & Human Services. Reservations are required.
During the concert, attendees will learn about the relationship between the music and its Western European counterparts, as well as the music¹s distinguishing characteristics. Classical concert music written in Cuba has great international significance, and has influenced the music of noted composers such as Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Isaac Albéniz, Georges Bizet, Enrique Granados, George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and many others.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Alonso was discovered by Luciano Pavarotti and made her debut with him singing La Boheme in New Orleans. She later moved to Europe where she lived and sang in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. With Plácido Domingo, she filmed Homage to Seville, which won an Emmy for Best Classical Music Program. Subsequently, she performed concerts with Domingo in Vienna and in the U.S. She was also engaged for numerous performances as a soloist with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Alonso has won numerous vocal awards, contests and scholarships. She has sung over 25 operatic leading roles, more than 15 operetta leading roles, eight leading roles in zarzuelas, and has starred in two musical comedies. She has performed extensively in theater, television as well as in concerts and recitals, with many of the leading orchestras in the world. Alonso sang the leading role in the world premiere of Der Alchemist in Switzerland to worldwide acclaim. Two operettas have been written for her.
For three years, she was an adjunct faculty member at Miami Dade Community College, where she taught Applied Voice and Music Appreciation. Until 2003, she was an adjunct faculty member at Florida International University. She has maintained her own private voice studio since 1994.
Alonso attended Florida State University, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University.
