UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Audrey Hynes on view beginning June 10, 2011. neither here nor there aims to evoke the familiar and the fantastical through non-site objects, on-site installation, site-specific installation, sculpture, video, sound and photography as documentation.
The basis of her work is conceptual, in an effort to rethink and recontextualize our perception of reality. The artist has said that the project specifically explores issues of material and location, by investigating an invasive species, the melaleuca tree, that has altered the physical terrain of the Everglades and South Florida. The exploration and manipulation of the materials becomes the process of each project, where the artwork is about process and time rather than static and enduring. The projects are relative to time and place within the site, they are temporary arrangements that are subject to change and become more of a sequence and narrative with each rearrangement, they are ephemeral like the material. The environmental, political and social conditions of the site are discovered through an exploration of location, material, process, and production.
Her projects are invented realities presented as fact that employ a pseudoscientific approach by using a variety of materials each with a corresponding process that becomes a major component for the overall inspiration and communication of the project. The actualization of the work occurs in two ways: either the artist begins with a solid idea and employs materials to certain ends, or my methodology begins as experimentation and leads to new discoveries and objects. This practice helps ensure an intuitive creative reaction that directly feeds her concept allowing an openness to new discoveries and provides fodder for developing dynamic, layered, stories. Her investigations frequent the topics of temporality, space, and time, and she is interested in the role that imagination plays in forming and reforming these physical properties of experience.
Her work is partially autobiographical and she attempts to detach herself from it to place it in a larger context with the intention of expressing a variety of feelings evident through human behavior. Each sculpture, photograph and installation relates to a theory where a subjective experience is in relation to a phenomena. The directedness that each project attempts to embody is an experience that is worldly, and inviting interaction and thought. By portraying her work as documentation of an actual experience, she attempts to evoke a sense of empathy with the object.
Hynes was born in Atlanta, Georgia and currently lives and works in Miami. She obtained her BFA from University of New Mexico in Studio Arts and a Post Baccaulaurette Certificate in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.
