Youth L.E.A.D. (YL), a food justice organization that empowers youth to increase access to healthy foods in underserved areas through training and apprenticeships, will partner with O-Cinema, a new independent nonprofit cinema in Wynwood, to host a food justice film series starting September 14 at 6pm. Each date of the series will include giveaways from a local, sustainable, healthy food retailer. The first film, Forks over Knives, will be screened on September 14 Sandesha and Dion Taylor of RAW ONE will be providing complimentary “live food” snacks from 6-7pm before the show. Tickets are $10.50, and proceeds benefit YL and O Cinema. Additional films and activities will occur on October 22 from noon-3pm and November 8 from 6-9pm.
Forks over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. The main storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering researchers, Dr. T., Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. The filmmakers travel with the two doctors on their separate but similar paths, from their childhood farms there they both produced “nature’s perfect food”, to China and Cleveland, where they explored ideas that challenged the established thinking and shook their own core beliefs.
