The 134 City Year Miami corps members are among 2,000 City Year corps members who are pledging to serve their communities in 21 locations across the United States. At the ceremony, corps members will be joined by family and friends, community, corporate and civic leaders as well as special guest speakers including; renowned tennis champion, Venus Williams and CEO of Volunteer Florida, Wendy Spencer. Alex Sanchez, City Year alumnus, will pass on the “Hammer of Service†to the 2011 Corps Members. Spero Canton, Director of Public Relations for Comcast, and Saif Ishoof, Esq, City Year Miami Executive Director will also be featured speakers.
This spirited Opening Day ceremony will kick-off a challenging and rewarding year of service. Renowned tennis champion, Venus Williams will speak and give the call to service to the 134 young leaders of City Year Miami to have resolve and strength while committing to help students at-risk of dropping out stay in school and on track for graduation. Wendy Spencer, CEO of Volunteer Florida will be reciting the City Year Pledge along with all corps members and staff.
The diverse corps members will serve full-time in 13 schools across Miami-Dade County. They are uniquely qualified to improve student attendance, behavior and coursework which help students and schools succeed.
These 134 young leaders pledging to serve Miami will:
· Serve 227,800 hours as mentors and tutors for more than 1,000 children in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools
· Lead after-school programs that reinforce learning and good behavior
· Help students and schools succeed on diverse teams sponsored by Walmart, Royal Caribbean Cruises, CSX, AAR, Wells Fargo, Univision, Miami-Dade Transit, Comcast, Miami Marlins, and Bank of America.
· Engage citizens in dynamic physical service events to beautify schools and communities throughout Miami-Dade county.
