Ongoing Exhibition Gives Viewers a Look at the Natural Wonders in South Florida’s Own Backyard

Visitors to Miami Science Museum can get a view of the hidden natural wonders right in South Florida’s own backyard with the ongoing photography exhibition Biscayne’s Underwater Secrets by National Park Ranger Thomas Strom. The exhibition, including 23 of Strom’s photographs, explores the natural beauty of Biscayne National Park.

Strom has seen all of Biscayne National Park’s underwater nooks and crannies, and he has photographed most of them. In many cases, Strom’s pictures are the general public’s best view of the hidden beauty that makes up Biscayne National Park. Each photo in the exhibition was taken within the confines of the park itself.

“I am proud to share these portraits from where I work, and where I live,” said Strom. “I hope that they inspire people to take a closer look at the wonders in their own backyard, and hope that Biscayne’s Underwater Secrets helps them see mine.”

Strom is a former Biscayne National Park volunteer and current employee. He has captured images of the Park’s natural wonders above the water, below the water, in hidden channels and behind the scenes. He has donated 8,000 images and 800 hours to the park over the past 10 years. His abilities to convey the awesome in the ordinary, and the elegance in the extraordinary, have earned him a place as Biscayne National Park’s go-to photographer.

A self-taught photographer, Strom is a native South Floridian. After living in western Massachusetts for several years, he returned home and began volunteering at Biscayne National Park. He first served as a photographer for the park’s award-winning Family Fun Fest and renowned environmental education program, and later for all of the park’s events. His images have been featured in park brochures, on its Web site, in traveling exhibits, and many other places by such prestigious organizations as National Geographic, Nature Valley Granola Bars, the International Coral Reef Symposium and The Miami Herald.

COST: Included with Museum admission. Students (with valid ID), seniors (62+) and children 3 – 12, $10.95; adults are $14.95. Admission is free for MiaSci members and children under 3. Parking is free.
