Claude Viallat studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier from 1955 to 1959. As a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he discovered abstraction. In the 1970s, he used abstraction to found one of themost influential artist groups in France, support-surface, and began producing the repeated pattern works using mainly primary colors which form the basis of all his later works. He lives and works in Nimes, where he was Director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1979 to 1985 and is one of the most highly respected artists and teachers.
Claude Viallat will be participating in the exhibition Tour de France/Florida: Contemporary Artists from France in Florida’s Private Collections opening on November 9, 2011 at The Frost Art Museum.
