Richard Haley’s practice incorporates sculpture, video and actions in which he attempts to force his will on the environment through sleight of hand and fanciful propositions. Deeply indebted to earthworks, Haley’s work explores our perception of the unseen and the vernacular of the romantic unknown of nature.
For his first solo exhibition in Miami, Haley shows several new works created in situ in Detroit and documented in the precise conditions that best capture the constructed phenomena. Three of these actions will be duplicated in Miami: A corps of volunteers wipes oil from their own skin onto a rectangle on the western-facing wall of a building, which glows golden-orange as the sun sets. A device inserted in the ground causes the site to swell up and meet the bottom of the sky. The artist arranges for a black rainbow to appear in the night’s sky several times a week.
On Saturday, December 4 at 8pm, Mary Anderson will perform a puppet-assisted lecture in the gallery, re-contextualizing the work in the exhibition as a set and props.
Richard Haley was born and raised in California, and currently lives and works in Detroit. His work was recently included in the exhibition Sea Worthy at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York. Haley is represented by Another Year in L.A. in Los Angeles, where his work can be seen in the group show YOU ARE ME (Artists Influenced by Stephen Kaltenbach) opening on November 17. Mary Elizabeth Anderson (born in Hollywood, CA; lives and works in Detroit) is an artist/scholar and Assistant Professor in the department of Theater and Dance at Wayne State University in Detroit. Her research has examined site-as-performer in the Australian central desert and Detroit. For the past two years with her touring company Performance Exchange she has created quasi-fictional accounts of the historic origins and culture of Detroit.
