Next@19th welcomes Ladino chanteuse Susana Behar to kick-off the second season of the Guava Rugelach Lounge series. Taking place under the palms in the center’s outdoor café setting, Behar will take guests on a Latin-American musical journey, celebrating the geographical diversity of Sephardic culture. Joining Behar is renowned guitarist Michel Gonzalez, Gerry Braun on cello, Kenneth Metzker on percussion and Ryoji Yamaguchi, also on guitar.
Born in La Habana to a Cuban/Turkish Sephardic family, Behar grew up listening to her mother’s ‘kantikas’ in Judeo-Spanish and her father’s vibrant Cuban rhythms. After relocating to Venezuela in 1965, she indulged in the music of her adoptive country, as well as in Israeli folklore, sparking an interest in Sephardic music traditions. Behar’s earthy and intimate performance of multi-cultural tunes will take audiences on a voyage from Spain to the Ottoman Empire. Refreshments will be available and include guava rugelach, and the Guava Rugelach cocktail featuring L’Chaim vodka. Tickets are now available for purchase at www.brownpapertickets.com
