Pioneer Winter has created Ebb/Flow , a site †specific work created for the Deering Estate and the SoBay Festival of the Arts to be performed upon a floating canoe onSouth Biscayne Bay. In Ebb/Flow two dancers, Pioneer Winter and Marissa Nick, engage in an assertive pas de deux to test their balance, resulting in a passionate struggle to maintain composure. While they fight onboard the canoe and with their relationship structure, they must ultimately confront one anotherto restore their romantic focus (and footing): mutual affection becomes a function of stasis.
These intimate performances will include four live showings of Ebb/Flow with a beautiful view of Biscayne Bay. The water will become a metaphor based upon the ebb and flow of romantic relationships. “I am a young choreographer—my experiences are notthe same as my cohorts—but relationships are something you build upon from birth.Who better to represent a romantic, turbulent, sometimes comedic experience than someone who is still riding that wave?†explains Pioneer Winter, 24.
Pioneer Winter, a Miami native, holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology. He has created workfor the Int’l Fringe Arts Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, Museum of Contemporary,Little Haiti Cultural Center, Adrienne Arsht Center, Miami Beach Convention Center, and Bass Museum of Art. FL Dance Masters accredited, Pioneer began dancing with Edwin and Gaile Holland, later coached by MichaelLanglois, with additional training at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He has worked with Jubilee DanceTheatre, Dance Now! Miami, Next Step Dance, Brazz Dance Theater, Ballet Etoile and hasperformed on tour in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain and Mexico City.
Pioneer’s projects find their niche in the portability of the messages and how themes discussed maintain significance and identification within current social climate. His workincludes, Reaching the Surface, an evening†length work reducing HIV/AIDS stigma with artists either infected or affected by HIV; Phallussy in the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Miami MadeWeekend; 42: A Stonewall Prospective presented at the Bass Museum of Art; and Miami Open Stage with his piece Mother†Son(days) . Pioneer also works in film and believes this contributes to the community at †large, rather than relying on an already†knowledgeable arts community. Most recently, Pioneer was accepted into the LegalArt Miami 2012†2013 residency program for Miami†based artists.
Contemporary art exhibits,one †time only art performances and site â€specific installations are certain to awaken one’s senses when Art SoBay opens on Saturday, February 18 th at the Deering Estate at Cutler. This unconventional day and evening art event is a highlight of the annual SoBay Festival of the Arts, a two †weekcelebration (February 14â€26) of visual, literary, and performing art collaborations. Proceeds from SoBay Festival of the Arts benefit the DeeringEstate at Cutler for preservation, education and restoration of the historic estate.
