The Women’s History Coalition of Miami-Dade County, Inc., invites you to its annual Women’s History Month kickoff observance Thursday, March 1, at 12 noon at the grave site of Julia Tuttle at the Miami City Cemetery. The Women’s History Coalition starts every March with this tribute to Julia Tuttle, the founder of the City of Miami. The featured speaker will be Penny Lambeth portraying Julia Tuttle.
Julia DeForest Tuttle, (January 22, 1849– September 14, 1898) born in Cleveland, Ohio, was an entrepreneur and businesswoman. She is credited with being the founder of Miami; the only female to found a major U.S. city. She and Mary Brickell owned land upon which the city was built.
The Women’s History Coalition (The Coalition) was founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1986 by a group of women in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The primary purpose is to coordinate and promote Women’s History Month, which is nationally celebrated each March. The Coalition has a multi-ethnic Board of Directors elected by its membership annually and all programs are accomplished by volunteers who have a common interest in preserving the history and contributions of women in South Florida.
