A Different Light: A Wynwood Photo Exhibit Featuring Limited-Edition Vintage Cameras

The Workshop, a creative collective located in Miami’s arts district, and Schwerzler Company, focused on fostering artistic entrepreneurship, will proudly feature local artist Andrew Bellamy’s first solo photography exhibit in Miami. Curated by Viviane de Kuyper-Verduyn, A Different Light explores the beauty found in the contemporary reality of Miami’s neighborhoods. Amidst the pulsing chaos of street art wonderland, not one tag or artsy kitchen has earned Bellamy’s attention. Instead, he directs our attention to what has always been, what has changed and what still is. With its connection to reality and his ability to make viewers think about the visible world they live in, Bellamy makes a powerful use of photography as a medium. The Miami that is normally passed over is now seen in a different light.

Bellamy is the founder of ILOTT Vintage, a Miami-based creative movement that advocates the use of vintage cameras and embraces the romantic ideal of pre-electronic photography. With a passion for beautifully engineered mid-century cameras and a delight for using them in the practice of manual film photography, Bellamy exclusively uses rangefinder cameras that are anywhere from 45 to 70 years old.

Great care, time and pride are taken in refurbishing each camera that is acquired for the ILOTT Vintage studio. All cameras pass the same rigorous tests before they are taken out on assignments. Leathers are replaced with premium quality wood veneers custom tailored to each camera for a unique, elegant appearance. The collection is constantly evolving as no two cameras are exactly the same. These cameras will also be on display for the public and available for sale.
“Our rangefinders predate planned obsolescence,” says Bellamy. “They are from a time when an object would be handed down through generations, not just be replaced after a year; when the weight of a product was a sign of quality, and not regarded as a hindrance; when products were repaired instead of discarded…dirt and scuffs give a hint of an individual biography; a history of different owners and unknown travels.”

Bellamy will host a special private previewing on Thursday, March 8th, 2012 and the official launch will take place during this month’s Wynwood Art Walk on March 10th, 2012. Upon arrival, complimentary Mandarine Napoléon cocktails will be available at both events.
