Florida’s Premier Music Festival announces its 29th season will feature over 25 music concerts, lectures and master classes from October 2 to November 4, 2012. Festival Miami is presented in collaboration with the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and provides a month-long series that blends artistically and culturally diverse music with educational opportunities. It showcases exciting performers alongside brilliant students and faculty artists.
Festival Miami concerts are conveniently organized into four themed categories ranging from Great Performances, Jazz and Beyond, Creative American Music and Music of the Americas.
The 29th annual Festival Miami opens with Leon Fleisher conducting the Frost Symphony Orchestra in a stimulating program, featuring music by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. The Frost Wind Ensemble premieres new works by Jennifer Higdon and Paul Dooley and will feature Frost percussion faculty Svet Stoyanov as soloist. Pianist Santiago Rodriguez returns by popular demand to present a solo piano recital Grammy Award winning soprano Ana MarÃa MartÃnez will perform a concert of enduring songs and arias, and Karen Kennedy conducts a massive ensemble comprised of the Master Chorale of South Florida and over 200 choral and orchestra students from the Frost School of Music in Carl Orff’s thrilling Carmina Burana, best known for its opening and closing selection “O Fortuna.†Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir will also present a children’s concert in collaboration with Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children.
In the jazz genre, Festival Miami 2012 presents award-winning jazz headliners Dave Liebman, Jason Moran, and Roseanna Vitro in the newly renovated UM Maurice Gusman Concert Hall and co-presents George Benson, Freddy Cole with the Frost School’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra as they perform Unforgettable: A Tribute to Nat King Cole in collaboration with Larry Rosen’s Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
Festival Miami 2012 then features Broadway vocal sensation Valerie Perri Lipson (Evita) in an entertaining Best of Broadway concert that will also feature her son Benny Lipson, who is a music major at the Frost School.The Festival rounds out its ambitious programming with Latin fusion artists Carlos Oliva y Los Sobrinos del Juez, the incredible vocalist Jon Secada, Brazilian jazz virtuosos Trio da Paz, and presents a set of two tango concerts in tribute to composer and bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla.
Festival Miami concerts are presented at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall and Victor E. Clarke Recital Hall on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus, and at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County in downtown Miami.
