New Theatre ignites the Mainstage with the sizzling award winning comedy, Educating Rita by Willy Russell, running October 12 – 28, 2012.
A brash and free spirited hairdresser Rita enrolls at the local university and turns her boozy and burnt-out professor’s life upside down. Educating Rita originally premiered in London in 1980 and this updated version of the play is currently enjoying a successful British revival tour.
“A truly great play! Willy Russell is a writer of genuine nobility of spirit, with a rare gift for empathy, observation, and sheer humanity.†— London Telegraph
"A marvelous play, painfully funny and passionately serious; a hilarious social documentary; a fairy tale with a quizzical, half happy ending." – London Times
Under the direction of Literary Manager Steven A. Chambers, the cast consists of the powerhouse duo of New Theatre veterans Dawn A. A. Plummer and Peter Haig, who returns to the New Theatre stage after a 15 year absence. The team includes: Production Stage Manager, Jerry Jensen with Scenic Designer: Ricky J. Martinez, Sound Designer: R. Kent Wilson, Lighting Designer: Eric J. Cantrell and Set Construction: Trintec Construction, Inc. Educating Rita is made possible in part by season programming support from the Miami Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Affairs Council, the Mayor, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners.
In addition to Educating Rita, the 2012-13 season will include the world premiere of Robert Caisley’s Happy — part of a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, John Pielmeier’s Agnes of God and a second as yet to be determined BOOMFROG! event. Rounding out the season will be the world premiere of Artistic Director Ricky J. Martinez’s Road Through Heaven, a play from his trilogy In God’s Land.
