Gallery Diet is pleased to announce Fabienne Lasserre’s second solo exhibition, The Us and the It. The exhibition will open on Friday, October 19th and will run through November 24th 2012, this is Ms. Lasserre’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
Fabienne Lasserre’s thin, curvilinear sculptures take hold of the main gallery space, these works have the abstract quality of a line and the tactility of a limb. Layers of dyed linen and acrylic polymer wrap steel rods like a cast on a broken arm. The pieces circumscribe space, carving out blank areas that can enclose or surround a human body. Equally objects and context, they determine a site in which space, thing and body aren’t quite distinct from one another.
In the projects room, the works are more compact, figure-like. They bear anthropomorphic qualities and the inertness of objects. As things, they evoke the animate; as beings they seem mute. Their pliant identity admits no beginning or end; it seems that sections could migrate and assemble into different forms.
Fabienne Lasserre has recently exhibited in the Quebec Triennial at the Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal, in a three person exhibition with Lucas Blalock, and James Hyde at Byrdcliffe Kleinert/James Center for the Arts and at Jeff Bailey Gallery in New York City. Her works have been written about in Art Forum, the Brooklyn Rail, the Village Voice, and Art Papers amongst numerous other publications. Fabienne has also been a visiting artist at the Vermont Studio Center, the University of Oregon, La Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, Karunkina in Tierra del Fuego, Chile, and La Curtiduria in Oaxaca, Mexico. She will also be a resident at the Dieu Donne Paper Mill in New York City in 2013.
