“Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting”. J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
MANO Fine Art is proud to present Faded Memory: A Tribute to Operation Pedro Pan with works by Humberto Calzada, MANO and Victoria Montoro Zamorano.
Faded Memory is an artistic tribute to Operation Pedro Pan, the 14,000 + Cuban children who were sent to the United States to avoid Castro’s political mandate, the parents who sacrificed and the many that made it possible
. Without question, their story is one of strength, courage and inspiration.
The artists in Faded Memory point to new bodies of work that reflect the myriad of sentiments tied to the heart-wrenching experience of Operation Pedro Pan. MANO’s poignant black and white canvases of children at an airport provoke a sense of lost childhood while Montoro-Zamorano’s brilliant photos of Cuba give way to memories of home and Calzada’s “Havana in Progress†prompts us to the reality of Cuba today.
Collectively, the exhibit beautifully restores a sense of hope and belonging and reminds the viewer that going away does not mean forgetting.
October 23, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the last Pedro Pan flight.
About the Pedro Pan Exodus:
Operation Pedro Pan was a program created in response to the thousands of parents in Cuba who feared for their children’s future under Castro. The program provided an opportunity to send Cuban children to the United States (primarily Miami) and avoid political indoctrination and forced encampment. Between 1960 and 1962 over 14,000 children left Cuba alone, most were between the ages of ten and sixteen but some were as young as four years old. October 23, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the last Pedro Pan flight. To date Operation Pedro Pan remains the largest exodus of unaccompanied children in the Western Hemisphere.
