Musicians, Surfers, Environmentalists and Friends collaborate on a Miami fundraiser to help power up the Rockaways, New York.
On Wednesday evening, November 28, 2012, a Hurricane Sandy benefit concert and documentary
screening will take place in Miami. Funds raised will help power up the communities of the Rockaways
in New York, a beachfront community that was hit by a 14 foot tidal surge that has left 23,000 residents
without power and in a critically damaged state.
Frustrated by the government’s turtle like response and worried about the approaching winter, musicians, surfers, environmentalists and friends in Miami are teaming up with Power Rockaways Resilience, a grassroots volunteer effort spearheaded by Walter Meyer and Jennifer Bolstad of Local Office Landscape Architecture, a husband-and-wife team working with planners, engineers and volunteers working to restore power to the residents of the Rockaways with solar powered generators.
Since electrical circuit boxes, wiring and heating systems have been inundated with salt water, solar generators can deliver power and heat to critical locations in the Rockaways, and can continue to supplement the grid with resilient power after the utilities power up again.
“The focus of this effort is not just about sustainability, but about resilience. We see the need on the ground in the Rockaways daily. The generosity of our friends in Miami will supply heat and power to alleviate suffering now, and will provide resiliency later.†Exclaimed Walter Meyer, whose fundraising efforts have already raised $13,482. He hopes friends in Miami will help double or even triple that amount.
