Galleria Ca D’oro is pleased to present Endless Time, an exhibition dedicated to the renowned artist and master of surrealism, Salvador Dalí. The exhibition is slated to open November 1, 2012, coinciding with the unveiling of Galleria Ca’d’oro’s new location at the prestigious Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables.

As an artist, Salvador Dalí needs no introduction. He will always arouse interest, speculation, discussion, and most of all, pleasure. “After the exhibition in Rome in Spring 2012 we wanted to open our new location with a great Master. So we brought the best of Dalí’s creative genius, transformed into three-dimensional sculpture, bringing forth his most famous and fantastic surrealistic images. Fifteen bronze artworks will be presented to collectors and art lovers for the first time at the Village of Merrick Park with prices starting from 11 thousand dollars.” says Gloria Porcella, curator and owner of Galleria Ca’d’oro.

The exhibition includes two stunning museum sculptures: the Snail and the Angel, and the iconic melting watch for which Salvador Dali is perhaps best known: the Nobility of Time. The latter sculpture depicts a soft watch draped around a tree; on top of the watch is a crown. “The crown of a watch" usually refers to the mechanical device used to set the hands and wind the timepiece. But time, according to a Dalínian watch, cannot be set. Thus, Dali’s crown represents time’s mastery over man.

Standing in the garden of the Village of Merrick Park is the highlight of the exhibition: Woman Aflame. The monumental sculpture rises to an imposing 11.8 feet tall, creating a striking visual impact which will surely leave viewers awestruck.

This enthralling collection offers the public a rare opportunity to experience Dalí’s genius and untamed imagination firsthand, sending each viewer on an adventure into his captivating world of art and Surrealism.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Stratton Foundation for the Cultural arts.  Mr. Benjamin Levi, President of the Stratton Foundation, is both an expert on and avid collector of Dalí’s work. With the focus on bronze sculptures, each piece in this collection-assembled over the last forty years-has been carefully chosen to bring various aspects of Dalí’s life’s work to the public eye.  These sculptures have been displayed in famous cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Singapore, and Shanghai.

This exciting project has been managed by Gloria Porcella, the gallery’s curator, in collaboration with Manuela Campisi and Melissa Sesana. Campisi and Sesana are currently working together with Galleria Ca’ d’Oro on a public art project in London.

Wine Tasting at The Four Seasons by Bob Quesada

It is 7:00 PM and we are on the “Outer Edge”; that is the bar space across from the “Edge” restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel on Brickell… and yes… when they say: “…one of the most spectacular venues in South Florida”; they are not exaggerating…it is!

Wine educator Barry Alberts is about to take our palates on a tour of the west coast wine regions: Californa, Oregon and Washington. All of the selected wines happen to be perfect for pairing with Thanksgiving dinner (Turkey and Ham) and all are highly rated.  Barry, a west coast native who has been in the wine business for thirty five years, is an affable, articulate and down to earth individual who’s passion and knowledge for what he does becomes apparent the minute you meet him.

The setting is casual and the people that have gathered around the bar are talkative and friendly. We begin with a light Sauvignon Blanc and proceed to a Chardonnay followed by a Pinot Grigio, as we continue to move through the eleven varieties chosen for the evening, Barry makes comments and asks for feedback. The experience is enjoyable for both: the novice as well as the seasoned connoisseur.

After eleven different wines, talk about the harmony of fruits, acids and tannins and trying to determine the finish we come away with a deeper knowledge of wine and a renewed enthusiasm for what is poetry in a bottle.

All the wines tasted were moderately priced between $14.99 to $22.99 per bottle at full retail, the special tasting price is about 20% off.

If you are looking for which wine to serve with your holiday meals or if you just love wine, this is the place you need to visit. You will have the opportunity to taste a great selection of wines before you make your decision, this could be the best $20.00 you ever spent on wine.

When:   First and Third Fridays of each month

Where: Edge Restaurant on the Four Seasons hotel’s 7th floor (1435 Brickell Ave.)

Cost:     $20.00 per person

As part of Art Basel 2012 and Miami Art Week, Etra Fine Art in Miami’s Design District, presents a “Winter Group Show” exhibiting the works of:  Rainer Lagemann, Christian Awe, Douglass Freed, Hunt Slonem, and Mario Velez.  The Opening Reception takes place on Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and the exhibit runs through January 11, 2013.

Encapsulating the spirit of Miami, this exhibit represents a microcosm of the variety of art presented to us at the peak of art season. From the hollow, metal squares that Rainer Lagemann (Germany) uses to sculpt the human form – a framework of the spirit and image of the body; the “resurrection of color” that restores emotional drama to abstraction found in Christian Awe’s (Berlin) paintings; landscapes by Douglass Freed (US) who names his paintings “structures” where shapes are fitted together to create a coherent whole; works of internationally renowned American artist Hunt Slonem who experiments with a unique method of cross-hatching to texturize his works; and Colombian artist Mario Velez, a minimalist artist who has been greatly inspired by the Bauhaus approach to design. This group show is a schema of all that the city has to offer in its unique, cultural diversity.

“As part of the Miami art fair season, we want to attract a wide and chosen audience,” comments Stefano Campanini, owner of Etra Fine Art.  “The show characterizes our evolving and dynamic city.”

About the Artists Presented:
Rainer Lagemann was born in Düsseldorf, Germany on September 14th, 1959. Studies and practice in interior design and welding began in Berkeley, California. Since 2008, he has resided and worked in Miami.  Rainer is fascinated by the human body, the classic theme of artistic expression and struggle, depicted in all shapes, materials and mediums since the existence of mankind. His sculpture captures the human body in motion–a freeze frame of classic, timeless gestures and emotions.  The sculptures are both ethereal and concrete.  The forms he creates are how one imagines a Nureyev or Baryshnikov would look in mid-flight.

Christian Awe began his painting career as an urban expressionist painter on the streets of Berlin in the early 90s. At the Berlin Universität der Künste he studied under Georg Baselitz and received his “Meisterschüler“ in 2006 under Daniel Richter.  As artist-in-residence at Princeton University, Awe taught experimental painting in Princeton in 2011. This year, he serves as Board Member for  “The Young Mesopotamians“ who mentors and teaches young Iraqi artists at Baghdad University’s College of Fine Arts.  Awes paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction and astound with expressive color. He employs spray paint and acrylics, ink and watercolors, markers and oil pastels. Through scraping, ripping or even digging out entire chunks of color, he exposes hidden layers resting beneath, allowing them to resurface as poetic pictorial spaces.

Douglass Freed’s undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Fort Hays State University. He is represented by galleries in New York City, Boston, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Charleston, St. Louis and Kansas City.  Freed was the Director of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art at State Fair Community College until his retirement in February, 2008 and helped build the Daum Museum collection from 200 objects to over 800 since its opening.  For nearly twenty years, he has made non-objective grid structured paintings. He has literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels where one panel is landscape imagery and adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes.

Hunt Slonem – Since 1977, Slonem has had more than 350 exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums internationally. More than 100 museums include his work in their collections, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has been commissioned to paint large-scale murals for the Bryant Park Grill, New York City and the former World Trade Center, NYC.  He is recipient of the prestigious “Stars of Design” award, the Greenshields Foundation award, and the National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1991.  He studied painting at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. For years, Slonem has been experimenting with a unique method of texturizing his works where he scrapes through multiple layers of wet paint using the whittled end of a paint brush handle. He describes it as a feeling of tapestry like weaving where he makes colors bleed into each other allowing light to come through so one can see five levels of paint, instead of one.

Mario Velez lives and works in Medellin, Colombia. He received his Bachelors of Arts degree at the National University of Colombia and Masters at the Hochschule der Künstein in Berlin. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in New York, Miami, California, Panama, Colombia, Japan, Austria Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, and Germany. His commissioned work includes corporate and public collections such as Inter-American Development Bank, Washington D.C.; Bloomingdales, New York; Ritz Carlton, Bangalore, India;  Museum of Latin American Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museo de Arte Moderno, Medellin, Colombia; and Galleria Armory-Arte Contemporanea, Perugia, Italy. Velez’ work both identifies and emancipates itself from two of the most identifiable characteristics of 20th century abstract art — one part structural geometric, austere — the other emotional, intuitive and organic. His work has been described as, “simplified geometric forms and the fine lines that traverse them creating an autonomous world that moves in a field created by the [works] themselves.”

Considered Miami’s Oldest Bar, The Road has survived 10 decades of change: within it’s historic walls, and through the many adaptations of the neighborhood.  As Tobacco Road turns 100, it witnesses the biggest change yet; thousands of acres of open bulldozed land on 3 sides, and construction just beginning for what will be the towering Brikell CitiCenter, it’s anyone’s guess what lies in store for the Road and the neighborhood it’s called home for 100 years.  Tobacco Road has been many things; from a prohibition speakeasy hideout for Al Capone, a desolate working-man’s watering hole during the great depression, a stark salon with a country at War, threatened by many deadly hurricanes, ground-zero for race-riots, cocaine cowboys, and a big brother to the rise and fall and rise of South Beach — the Road has seen it all.  Through its time as a gambling den owned by the Chief of Police, a gay bar, strip joint and blues bar the two-story structure remains virtually unchanged since its inception in the early 1900s.

Tobacco Road turns 100 Years Old with a celebration slammed packed with top local and national artists, perfromances, muscians, festivals & BBQs — the Road Warriors will even show they can still compete with the kids at the upcoming Red Bull Flug Tag with a flying Birthday Cake lunged into Biscayne Bay on Novemebr 3rd in Bayfront Park.

Readings, Author signings and Topical Discussions

The 29th edition of the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), will take place November 11 – 18, 2012. The always-popular Street Fair includes more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere.

The Fair, MDC’s flagship cultural event, will treat book lovers to eight days of cultural and educational activities, including the beloved Evenings With… series, the IberoAmerican Authors program, myriad learning activities for children, and programs for food enthusiasts in partnership with the college’s Miami Culinary Institute.

Top Confirmed Authors
The Fair continues to raise the bar of excellence by offering a fine roster of writers from the U.S. and abroad, and this year will be no exception. Confirmed authors include talk show host Bill O’Reilly, actress Molly Ringwald, political commentator Andrew Solomon, historians Robert Caro and Deborah Dash Moore, David Maraniss, Michael Grunwald; Pulitzer Prize winning Junot Diaz; essayists and commentators Adam Gopnik and Camille Paglia; novelists Sandra Cisneros, Emma Donoghue, Jess Walters, Ann Lamott Lauren Groff, Robert Goolrick, Thane Rosenbaum, personality Lemony Snickett; fashion designers Isabel and Ruben Toledo; best selling authors James Patterson, Jo Nesbo, RL Stine, Justin Torres, and opening the Fair on Nov. 11 is novelist and journalist Tom Wolfe, to name just a few of the 300 plus authors coming to Miami from all over the world to read from their newest works, to meet their readers and sign books.

The IberoAmerican program will present an array of Spanish-speaking literary voices from around the world, including Homero Aridjis (Mexico), Mayra Santos Febres (Puerto Rico), Abilio Estévez (Cuba-Spain), Santiago Roncagliolo (Perú) and more.

Back again this year is the fall edition of The Miami Writers Institute, with workshops taught by novelist Margot Livesey, literary agent Kimberly Witherspoon, and award-winning author Teresa Dovalpage with a workshop in Spanish, among others.

This year, the Fair continues to expand its children’s programming with Generation Genius Days, a component for toddlers, children, tweens and teens to explore, discover and learn through reading and writing, storytelling, art-making, music and theater. Age-appropriate, book-inspired activities will be offered, and will include a “musical petting zoo”, where kids can handle instruments; map-making and star-gazing; junior engineering projects and science experiments; creative writing and theater workshops, computer storyboarding for comics and cartoons, and other activities that can lead to learning and discovery in the various subject areas, such as English, math, history, geography, the sciences, the visual arts and others. An additional day of author readings for students on field trips is now on the schedule, as well as a fourth day of readings, storytelling and entertainment on the two children’s stages.

The Fair also continues special programming for educators with the day-long School of Comics and Graphic Novels — a series of workshops on how to use comics in the classroom–and adds workshops on how to teach creative writing to K-12 students. Miami Book Fair International 2012 promises to be another exceptional literary event!

Miami Book Fair International is the largest and is regarded as the finest literary gathering in America. It is the premier event of The Center for literature and theatre at Miami Dade College. The Center promotes reading and writing throughout the year by consistently presenting quality literary activities open to all in South Florida. Literacy projects target children of all ages—from kindergarten to high school—as well as college students and adults. Established and emerging writers from South Florida and all over the U.S. read, lecture, and teach workshops. They work with K-12, MDC students, and diverse members of the community, helping to deepen their understanding of literature, and encouraging their work of writers at all stages of development. The Center envisions South Florida as a nexus of literary activity in the Americas and beyond, and will continue to champion its mission of promoting the advancement and appreciation of the literary arts in all forms.

Miami Book Fair International is made possible through the generous support of the State of Florida and the National Endowment for the Arts; the City of Miami; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; Miami-Dade County Public Schools; the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau; the Miami Downtown Development; and the Friends of the Fair; as well as many corporate partners.

Beginning with a Gala Event, the company of the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will once again journey to the Land of the Sweets, as they perform the traditional annual audience favorite, The Nutcracker.  This holiday ‘chestnut’ depicts the tale of a young girl, Clara, on Christmas Eve and the adventure she undertakes when her most cherished Christmas present, a nutcracker, comes to life. Together they battle the Mouse King, travel to the Land of Sweets , enjoy festivities with delicious international treats, and finally travel home.

Company members of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida are exceptionally excited about this year’s performances of The Nutcracker and are proud to give life to the roles of the Sugarplum Fairy and her cavalier, the Nutcracker Prince, the Marzipan dance, the Snow Queen and all of the other wonderful characters that light up the eyes of all ages of audiences during the holiday season, to celebrate Arts Ballet Theatre’s fifteen years of bringing affordable and exquisite ballet to South Florida!

There will be three venues showcasing the critically acclaimed performances of Vladimir Issaev’s holiday tradition – the stages of the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and The Parker Playhouse of Fort Lauderdale. The company is most excited about the opening gala celebration performance at the Fillmore/Gleason, which will truly celebrate the company’s fifteen years of making holiday magic. For VIP Patrons, the December 9th Gala will begin at 6:00 pm, with tapas and libations, a reception with the international corps of dancers, and chances to bid on silent auction items that range from donations from Tiffany’s, to weekend getaways at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando, followed by the grand opening performance of the holiday season.

The principal roles in The Nutcracker will be commanded by Arts Ballet’s own delicious international treats – Jun Tanabe, Kaori Fukui and Miu Yamauhi and Takayuki Asai from Japan, Breeana Flannery from Australia, Lillian Hill of Ft. Lauderdale, Kelvin Rabines from Peru, DeeDee Rosner from North Carolina, and Hernan Montenegro from Chile with additional dancers from Japan, Cuba, France, Venezuela and Chile completing the rest of the cast.

Issaev’s engaging choreography preserves the Russian tradition, with music of P.I. Tchaikovsky, yet serves as an alternative to those who already have seen Balanchine’s version and every year the production is enhanced, adding special effects like falling snow and a growing Christmas tree, which enchant children and adults, making each year a ‘new’ experience for returning audiences.

Engage in the holiday gift loved ones will always cherish. Don’t miss the opportunity to share the excitement and charm of the great tradition of the holidays with Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida during their extraordinary performances of "The Nutcracker."

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida receives funding from Miami Dade County Dept. of Cultural Affairs, Broward County Cultural Division, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Miami Salon Group, Funding Arts Broward, Citizens Interested in Arts, Target and Marlin Foundation, The Miami Childrens Trust to support a professional season of performances and community outreach events in Miami-Dade County for the 2012-2013 season.

(Miami, Florida) – Gulliver Preparatory celebrated the induction of the Class of 2012 into their Athletic Hall of Fame during the month of October.  Led by the Athletic Department and the Alumni Association, The Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2010 to recognize and honor coaches, administrators and student athletes who have achieved athletic success, and who have made significant contributions to the reputation of their athletic program.  Inductees included Gina Derks Gardner – class of 1990, Coach Jorge Dieppa, Sylvia Fowles – class of 2004, Coach Mark Schusterman, and the late professional football player, Sean Taylor – class of 2001.  The 2010 Inaugural Class Inductees included Mrs. Marian Krutulis “Mrs. K,” Mr. Joseph A. Krutulis “Coach K,” Coach Jan Gomez, Coach Chuck Tobey and Gulliver Schools headmaster, James Williams.

Gulliver Preparatory plans to develop a physical “Wall of Fame” on campus to commemorate all inductees.

Strike up the band! The official start of the Holiday Season will get underway when the 16th Annual ‘Miracle on 136th Street Holiday Parade’ marches into The Falls on Saturday, November 17th at 4:00 pm. Sponsored by South Miami Fiat, Beaches® Resorts, Cox Radio (Easy 93.1 and 97.3 the Coast), and Baptist Children’s Hospital, this year’s Holiday Parade benefits the South Dade YMCA Family Center, which is opening a brand new center the end of 2012.

Free and open to the public, this year’s parade will feature local marching bands, bag pipers, stilt walkers, a junkanoo band, a mariachi band, Brazilian dancers, a Dixieland Band, a penny-farthing bike, local dignitaries, and more! The Jolly Old Elf himself will also make his long-awaited first arrival of the season along with Mrs. Claus and their little helpers.

Celebrity Grand Marshal, Coco Jones, from Disney Channel’s original movie Let It Shine, will lead the way. Jones has also had recurring roles on Disney Channel’s So Random! and Good Luck Charlie. Coco recently signed to Hollywood Records and has been in the studio co-writing and recording all-new original music for her highly anticipated debut album.

Local celebrities including the Mayor of the Village of Pinecrest Cindy Lerner and the Mayor of Cutler Bay Ed MacDougall, plus Roxanne Vargas of NBC6, Mariana Rodriguez of Telemundo 51, Eileen Cardet of Univision, and Chief Meteorologist Max Mayfield of Local 10 will be spreading holiday cheer as they wave to joyful spectators from vintage cars.

Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to line both sides of the parade route before the 4:00 p.m. kick off. The parade route, which is located on the Boulevard in between the center and the parking lot, will start at the east end of The Falls in front of Bloomingdale’s and wind through the entire length of the center, west toward Macy’s.

October 22, 2012—Miami Dade College will screen a new documentary film “Up to Us” at the Wolfson
Campus on November 5 at 6 pm.

The 20-minute film, which was shot this summer in New York, Atlanta and at both the Democratic
and Republican Conventions, follows two young Americans — Atlanta native Kyle Murphy, 23, who
served as an AmeriCorps member at Habitat for Humanity, and Brandon West, 27 a Masters in Public
Administration graduate, who is underemployed (for 18 months), but is seeking work in a public service
field.

The film specifically highlights the www.onemillionnewjobs.org campaign as a viable pathway toward
increasing economic mobility, while it makes the case for voting as a means of supporting the measure.

“Up to Us” was produced with support from Own the Vote (www.ownthevote.us) an initiative from
Comcast and NBC Universal that aims to engage and educate young voters about the political process.
Own the Vote has partnered with ElectNext, Rock the Vote and the National Constitution Center to help
create awareness about and encourage voter registration and voter participation.
