Art Basel 2012 will feature a unique collaboration to celebrate global marine conservation. Artists Phoebe Webb, Virginia Ansaldi, David Roman and Viktor Nathan-Elsaieh have partnered to create two 42 inch by 15 foot abstract paintings in support of the University of Miami’s (UM’s) successful R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (RJD). The event is Thursday, December 6 at 7:30pm at Chalk Lounge in South Beach, Fla. Complimentary cocktails will be served from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and free ping pong from 7:30 to 9:30.
During the event, each painting will be sold off piece by piece ($0.35 per square inch). Guests will be able to select their piece of the painting, which will be cut out and packaged for them to take home.
“Inspiration for the event came from my grandparents, Phoebe and John Webb, who did a similar event several years ago with another artist couple,†said artist and RJD Laboratory Manager Ansaldi. “My grandfather has passed, and my grandmother who has moved back to Miami is still painting. I am looking forward to painting with her and creating a painting like she did with my late grandfather. This time, we are supporting of RJD, which she is proud of me for being a part of, and which is doing such amazing work to save sharks and other critical marine species.â€
All of the proceeds go to the UM’s RJD Program, subsidizing the cost of marine research and outreach field trips for high school students. For more information, please call 305-323-9178.
