“Environmental Consciousness in Eco-Art”
In Conjunction with Earth Week
Mary Jo Aagerstoun is an “accidental environmentalist†whose expertise is in contemporary activist art and cultural production. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Maryland’s Art History and Archaeology Department and proceeded to found EcoArt South Florida, Inc. in 2007. Since then her work has facilitated large-scale, environmentally conscious architectural and sculptural installations around South Florida in order to make a difference within native ecology through art that also engages the community.
Aagerstoun will speak about the role that EcoArt can play in bringing attention to and fighting the causes of climate change as well as the need for artists to assist in presenting the world with warnings and solutions to major environmental issues. Her talk will also encompass the history of “Earth Art†and the connections between the 60’s based movement and EcoArt’s current and future projects.
Since EcoArt South Florida’s inception Aagerstoun has directed many collaborative endeavors. The organization’s work can be seen in Dreher Park, the LEED certified Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek and in Belle Glade and continues to expand as projects are currently in progress for each of South Florida’s 5 watersheds, each to be finished in 2015.
This event is free and open to the public.
Meet and greet with the artist will begin at 5:30pm with free refreshments.
