The Rolex Deepsea Challenge Exhibition will be on display for the first time in Florida, exclusively at Mayors Jewelers in Aventura from June 21st to July 8th, 2013.
On March 26, 2012, filmmaker and explorer James Cameron made an unprecedented solo dive to the deepest point in the ocean, Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, southwest of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, with the experimental ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE watch attached to the exterior of his submersible. The ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE descended to a depth of 35,756 feet, defying extreme technical challenges and showcased Rolex’s amazing waterproof capabilities during an expedition that opened a new chapter in deep-sea exploration.
“The ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE was the reliable companion throughout the dive; it was visible on the sub’s manipulator arm and working precisely at 10,898 meters down at the bottom of Challenger Deep,†James Cameron said after his historic dive. “It’s a tremendous example of engineering know-how, and an ideal match for the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible.â€
On board with Cameron acting as his lucky charm was the ‘Old Lady,’ the history-making 1960 ROLEX DEEP SEA SPECIAL experimental watch that had accompanied Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard and the then Lieutenant Don Walsh on their legendary dive in the bathyscaphe TRIESTE on January 23, 1960, the first and until Cameron’s dive, the only manned dive to what was then the deepest-known point in the Mariana Trench. On that exploit, the ROLEX DEEP SEA SPECIAL, attached to the hull of the Trieste reached a depth of 35,814 feet returning to the surface in perfect working order, a feat that remained unrivalled for more than half a century.
The educational Rolex Deepsea Challenge Exhibition in partnership with the National Geography Society includes interactive audio and visual and will showcase both renowned watches. This is a traveling exhibition and will later move to Mayors Jewelers in Orlando.
