Tired of Jazz Festivals that aren’t really Jazz Festivals? Well look no more!
The Miami Beach Jazz Festival is Jazz, pure Jazz! Scheduled for Saturday, November 16th at the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre, the event promises to be a line-up of quality Jazz performances that will capture the excitement of fans throughout South Florida and beyond including headliner Michelle Coltrane, vocalist and daughter of jazz legends John and Alice Coltrane.
“There are many music festivals that call themselves ‘Jazz’ events, but are all too often watered down with other types of music” says event founder and producer, Carmen J. Cartiglia. “The Miami Beach Jazz Festival will be going back to the basics and will showcase performances from exceptional true jazz artists.â€
Michelle Coltrane represents a strong legacy of performers in the Jazz World. The only daughter of John and ‘Alice Coltrane, her first CD was released in 1994. “I Think Of You†a collaboration with musician and composer Scott Hiltzik produced a blend of classic and contemporary Jazz. “The Jazz Times” noted the recording to be deeply rooted in the Jazz tradition and was well received including winning a YES award. Her current project is in collaboration with guitarist Shea Welsh (performing with Michelle at the Festival), who is also the musical director for her band. Michelle and Shea are writing new material, and arranging new and classic standards to create the bands unique modern/retro sound.
The announced addition of headliner Michelle Coltrane rounds out a full slate of true jazz performances. Also appearing on the bill will be the duo of Brazilian jazz guitarist Joe Carter and flautist Ali Ryerson; award winning jazz pianist Markus Gottschlich; violinist Mads Tolling; and the South Florida Jazz Orchestra featuring Special Guest performers including Michelle Coltrane and Ed
Calle.
From now through October 15th, student musicians and bands from all over South Florida will be able to apply for a competition that could lead them to be chosen as the opening act for the Festival. Applications are available at the website: www.miamibeachjazz.com. Each student who enters will be given a ticket to the Festival as well as a free pass to the series of three master classes being taught by some of the featured artists at the Betsy Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach during the week prior to the Festival.
“We’re going ‘Old School’ for this event and bringing the people of South Florida a true Jazz event that they can be proud of!” Mr. Cartiglia goes on to say that “this is the start of an annual Jazz festival that will grow with each year and establish Miami Beach as the home for ‘True Jazz’ and the revival Jazz is enjoying.”
The Festival is being sponsored by Atlantic Broadband, The Road Less Traveled: Project Ecuador, Bloomingdale’s, ArtMiami.TV and Cynthia & Lance Geller.
