In the face of death we are all equal, we are all “Calacas”

Yvonne Pfeiffer “Calacas Reinvented”: An introspective into the female emotion.

People have come to know Calacas through Day of the Dead celebrations, artistic relics, tattoos, and ethnic funeral ceremonies. But the calaca’s origin can be found in Aztec roots and it represents the ceasing of one’s life and the passing into the afterlife. Calaca is actually a colloquial word for ‘skeleton.’ The calaca is represented by a skeleton that is usually garnished with flowers and painted with bright colors. Various Latin countries have adapted their own meaning to the calaca imagery. In Mexico, the calaca is celebratory and used in festivals where people where masks and festive clothing all inspired by the calaca style. The Mexican calaca generally looks upon death with positivism and optimism. In contrast, in Guatemala their traditional calaca is a bare skeleton usually without decorations or colors which then translates fear and mourning upon the event of death.

The Idan Raichel Project at Arsht Center with Quarter to Six 10/17/13

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to present the return of the triple platinum-selling The Idan Raichel Project, an ever-changing ensemble of multicultural performers from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and more, led by internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter, producer and musician Idan Raichel. Launching the Center’s 2013-2014 Live at Knight Series, The Idan Raichel Project will perform hits such as “Mi’Ma’amakim” and “Boee,” as well as new songs from his album Quarter to Six on October 17 at 8:30 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.

“We look forward to welcoming The Idan Raichel Project back to our world-class stage. Raichel’s cross-cultural music is beautifully inspiring and is a perfect fit for South Florida’s robust multiethnic community,” said John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “At a time when headlines are dominated with news of war, it’s artists like Idan Raichel that remind us to celebrate cultural diversity.”

Since the release of its debut self-titled album in 2002, The Idan Raichel Project has been known for its fusion of Israeli pop music with Middle Eastern, African, Indian and global sounds. More than a decade later, Idan Raichel’s unique musical style and ability to collaborate with a variety of artists continues to make an impact – earning him one of the biggest-selling records in Israeli history and also catapulting him into a major figure in the international global music scene.

“If I had called the album just ‘Idan Raichel,’ people would have thought that Raichel is the main voice on all the songs. I wrote the songs and I arranged and produced them, but I perform them together with other vocalists and musicians. On the other hand, we are not a group. It’s something in between,” explains Idan Raichel. To date, more than 95 singers – ranging 16 to 91 years old – from dozens of different countries and cultural backgrounds have participated in the Project’s recordings or performances.

The Idan Raichel Project’s most recent album, Quarter to Six (2013), reflects on how to find peace at the end of life. The artist describes the album’s title as a metaphor for a crossroads within his own life – a time where he felt his Project had reached a period of change, reflection and transition. Musically, the record is more acoustic than his previous ventures and blends his mellow voice with electronics and a diverse lineup of world musicians such as Portuguese fado star Ana Moura, Palestinian-Israeli singer Mira Awad, German counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, Colombia’s Marta Gómez, Vieux Farka Touré and a selection of some of Israel’s top up-and-coming singers and musicians.

Prior to the release of Quarter to Six, Idan Raichel released four studio albums and a 3-CD collection of live recordings, launched a North American tour with longtime collaborator and Grammy Award winner India.Arie, and celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Idan Raichel Project with a series of sold-out concerts held at the Caesarea Amphitheater, an ancient Roman amphitheater near Tel Aviv. Idan Raichel has also had the privilege to perform at a Nobel Peace Prize awards ceremony and for President Obama at the Kennedy Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In addition, the Project has headlined some of the world’s most prestigious venues including New York’s Central Park Summer Stage, Apollo Theater, Town Hall and Radio City Music Hall; Los Angeles’ Kodak Theater; the Sydney Opera House; Zenith and Bataclan in Paris; London’s Royal Albert Hall and many international festivals.

In 2013 the Art Basel show in Miami Beach will feature 258 leading international galleries, drawn from 31 countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The show presents artwork ranging from Modern masters to the latest contemporary works and includes, for the first time in Miami Beach, a sector dedicated to editioned works. Art Basel in Miami Beach, whose Lead Partner is UBS, will take place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 5 to December 8, 2013.

The 2013 Miami Beach show asserts again its status as the premier destination for galleries from the United States and Latin America, with nearly half of this year’s exhibitors coming from those regions. Galleries with exhibition spaces in 31 countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Monaco, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and Uruguay are participating at this year’s show.

A select group of younger American galleries are taking part in the show for the first time, including Elizabeth Dee and Corbett vs. Dempsey in the show’s Galleries sector, 47 Canal in Nova, and Bureau and Real Fine Arts in Positions. Reflecting the international show’s growing link to Asia, new galleries from the region include Tang Contemporary Art and One and J. Gallery, both in Positions, and Singapore Tyler Print Institute in Edition.

The focus of the show remains its Galleries sector, which includes 195 of the world’s best established galleries. Long-time exhibitors are joined by first-time participants such as Pace/MacGill Gallery, one of the leading international photography galleries. After a brief hiatus, Art Basel in Miami Beach also welcomes returning galleries Foksal Gallery Foundation, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, P.P.O.W, and Timothy Taylor Gallery. Several galleries who previously exhibited as part of Nova or Positions have progressed to the main sector of the show, including Gavlak Gallery, Ingleby Gallery, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Galerie Mezzanin, Proyectos Monclova, Ratio 3, Reena Spaulings Fine Art, Galeria Nara Roesler, and Wentrup.

This year’s Nova sector, which offers younger galleries a platform to present work made in the last three years by one, two or three artists, offers a focused selection of 34 participants. Highlights include works by the artists Aaron Bobrow and David Diao (at Office Baroque Gallery); Deyson Gilbert and Marina Simao (at Mendes Wood); Pamela Rosenkranz and Keiichi Tanaami (at Karma International); Saadane Afif and Karsten Fodinger (at RaebervonStenglin); Oliver Laric and Aleksandra Domanovi. (at Tanya Leighton Gallery); Charles Atlas (at Vilma Gold); Bharti Kher, Sheela Gowda and Prabhavathi Meppayil (at GallerySKE); Sam Falls, Wyatt Kahn (at T293); Teresa Margolles, Pedro Reyes and Jill Magid (at Labor); Daniela Ortiz, Rita Ponce de Leon and David Zink Yi (at 80M2 Livia Benavides) and Matthew Chambers and Phil Wagner (at Untitled).

Positions focuses on curated booths presenting a single artist. In 2013, this sector comprises 16 artists, including Ulrik Heltoft (at Andersen`s Contemporary), Gabriel Acevedo Velarde (at Arratia Beer), Lourival Cuquinha (at Baró Galeria), Tom Holmes (at Bureau), Jorge Pedro Nuñez (at Galerie Crèvecoeur), Dove Allouche (at Gaudel de Stampa), Vijai Patchineelam (at Ignacio Liprandi Arte Contemporáneo), Stefanos Tsivopoulos (at Kalfayan Galleries), Nicolás Consuegra (at La Central), Juan López (at Nogueras Blanchard), Seung Yul Oh (at One and J. Gallery), Oriol Vilanova (at Parra & Romero), Nadira Husain (at PSM), Mathieu Malouf (at Real Fine Arts), Laercio Redondo (at Silvia Cintra + Box4), Wang Yuyang (at Tang Contemporary Art).

Following the long success of a dedicated sector for prints and limited-editioned works at Art Basel’s show in Basel, the Edition sector premiers now in Miami Beach with 13 exhibitors, including first-time Miami Beach participants Alan Cristea Gallery, Crown Point Press, gdm, Pace Prints, Paul Stolper Gallery, and Singapore Tyler Print Institute.

The Public sector will for the first time be curated by Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator of New York City’s Public Art Fund. Both the Public and Kabinett sectors will feature expanded significant offerings in 2013, with an increased number of participating artists and galleries. Further information on Public, the Kabinett and Film sectors and Art Basel’s Conversations and Salon series will be released during the fall.

Gallery Highlights and Key Themes at Design Miami/ 2013

Design Miami/, the global forum for design, presents the best in collectible design from the world’s most prestigious galleries. Design Miami/ returns with its largest and most international gallery program to date. Featuring 37 galleries overall – 31 in the main exhibition program and six in the On/Site program for solo exhibitions of new work – this year’s participants have been invited from 10 different countries, including first time exhibitors from Russia and Lebanon. Design Miami’s gallery selection represents a broad range of specialist areas, from late 19th century art pottery, through masterworks of the mid 20th century to the most exciting developments at the cutting edge of contemporary design.

/ Digital Design
The fascination with the aesthetic tension between old and new is typified by the output of designers such as Maarten Baas, Astrid Krogh and Humans Since 1982 who utilize contemporary technologies and materials to create works that communicate at a strongly human level. Krogh’s optic fiber tapestries use traditional techniques to otherworldly ends, while Random International’s A Study of Time re-captures importance of light and shadow to the understanding of the passage of time within early civilizations.

/ Artist and Studio Jewelry
This year finds an unparalleled selection of galleries specializing in jewelry, including first time exhibitors Louisa Guinness and Elisabetta Cipriani. Ranging from specially commissioned pieces by visual artists, such as Carlos Cruz Diez, to the output of masters in the studio jewelry field, such as Iris Eichenberg and Margaret De Patta, whose works unite sculptural and architectural elements redolent of the modernist aesthetic, these are works on an intimate scale, often with particular personal significance.

/ Emerging American Designers
The highly diverse work of young American designers on display encompasses everything from the experimental, organically formed ceramics of the Haas brothers to Sebastian Errazuriz’s meditations on mortality delivered in the form of furnishings rich with funeral pomp. Jonathan Muecke, meanwhile, engages in more formal, philosophical investigations into the nature of products, examining how far form and function can be pushed before an object changes identity. While Jon Stam, recipient of the 2013 WDOF Award, explores abstractions of time and place, depicting bucolic American scenography in his new series of Claude Glass.

/ Material Investigations
Some of the most fascinating works are the fruit of investigations into possible applications of unusual and everyday materials. Nucleo creates a contemporary fossil, preserving decaying wood inside a block of epoxy resin resembling amber. Baroud and Dibeh also investigate preciousness in their Wires series that uses simple components and archetypal shapes. Jeweler Taher Chemirik, meanwhile, uses his knowledge of precious and semi-precious gems to create a series of tables featuring tops sliced out of rare hard stones, including a single 71-inch rock crystal.

/ Designing Women
Fantastic designs by influential women are on display throughout the fair, including an important body of work created by Charlotte Perriand for the Borot family in Paris over many decades. Elsewhere we find Glass artist Ritsue Mishima’s exquisite colorless forms created with master craftsmen from Murano. Design Miami/ also gives a platform to Hella Jongerius’ spectacular recent investigations into the structural application of polychrome resin.

/ Twentieth Century Masters
Notable works by leading lights of twentieth century design on display for the first time include Jean Prouvé’s unique prefabricated building prototype War Victims House, which receives is US debut at Design Miami/. The half-century-long career of Maria Pergay is receiving special focus, including the exhibition of dynamic stainless steel work alongside historic tapestries from Sheila Hicks.

Design Talks/
Design Miami’s Design Talks program brings together leading creative minds, collectors, and critics in the field of design to discuss the most compelling topics of the moment. The headlining conversations between well-known figures that have shaped the American home will be supplemented this year by Designers on Site, a new strand of talks that spotlight designers featured in the fair.

Design Talks presented by The Surf Club Hotel and Residences/
December 4, 6-7pm Richard Meier in conversation with Paul Goldberger
December 5, 6-7pm Muriel Brandolini in conversation with Margaret Russell
December 6, 6-7pm Martha Stewart in conversation with Stefano Tonchi

Designer on Site Talks/
December 4, 3-4pm Nadja Swarovski in conversation with Guilherme Torres
and Mark Tercek
December 5, 3-4pm Formlessfinder in conversation with Zoë Ryan

Design Collaborations/
Design Miami/ partners with leading brands who promote innovation in both the technical and aesthetic spheres of contemporary design. The fair offers an opportunity for these creative brands to showcase specially commissioned collaborations that illustrate their particular relationship to the world of design.

Design Commission/
Each December, Design Miami/ commissions early career architects to build a designed environment for the fair’s entrance as part of its biannual program of Design Commissions.

Design Satellites/
The Design Miami/ fair is a hub for diverse and original design events, pop-ups and exhibitions that run concurrently, both on and off site. The satellite program complements the content of the commercial gallery exhibitions, allowing for a different perspective on the designers’ work.

On Saturday, October 12th, Blue Martini Kendall hosted a Happy Hour to benefit the D Amor Foundation. The D Amor Foundation’s mission is to provide hope, and to help children with autism achieve a better quality of life by providing families with resources, educational tools and access to therapies such as speech, occupational, art, music and sensory integration, all of which are integral to managing the disorder. Several companies donated services for a raffle and silent auction. Donations go directly to fund programs for children with autism, including Tae Kwon Do, soccer, music, art and other activities for families affected by the neurodevelopment disorder. The D Amor Foundation was founded by Maria and Jose Montalvo in honor of their son, Diego, who was diagnosed with autism at age 2. The goal is to help families affected by autism in South Florida and Puerto Rico find resources and access to therapies, which can be costly. Damor Foundation Mr Q 305 on fb   Mr Q 305 on Twitter

To honor her memory, friends and family members created the Andrea Castillo Foundation, which aims to support and encourage others who also love education and are studying to become teachers. The Andrea Castillo Foundation has established scholarship with Miami-Dade College and Florida International University to create scholarship opportunities for students who are pursuing a degree in education.

During the first Starlight Scholarship Benefit Reception, the first recipients of the scholarships will be honored and members of the community that have helped create the scholarships, helping honor Andrea’s dream, will also be recognized.

3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament 10/25/13

3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament
golfOctober 25
Loews Miami Beach Hotel
1601 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139

Entry into the tournament is $4,000 per foursome, which covers green fees for three players and one celebrity, premium gift bags, commemorative photo, breakfast, lunch and more.

Loews Miami Beach Hotel will host its 3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament, benefiting DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that connects donors to Miami Dade County classrooms in need. Additionally, the tournament benefits The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, a Miami-Dade County School Board program created to enhance student achievement and community engagement. The tournament has received celebrity and influencer endorsements from the likes of Alonzo Mourning, Ken Griffey, Jr., Jay Harris, Jason Taylor, Bucky Dent and Mark Duper and many more throughout the years.

“Our annual celebrity golf tournament raises significant amounts of dollars that go directly to many desperately needed educational programs in our county through Donorschoose.org and The Foundation for New Education Initiatives,” said Alex Tonarelli, Managing Director, Loews Miami Beach Hotel.

Public school teachers spent $1.6 billion of their own money on classroom supplies and gear in the 2012-2013 school year, according to a report released in June 2013 by the National School Supply and Equipment Association (NSSEA), a trade association for educational product companies.

“We hope to exceed our contributions this year, which funds as many Miami Dade County educational projects as possible, and relieves the burden from our educators who spend thousands out of pocket on school supplies and instructional materials,” added Tonarelli.

In 2010, Loews Hotels celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Good Neighbor program by partnering with DonorsChoose.org in an effort to improve public education. Over the three years, Loews’ team members have raised funds by organizing car washes, bake sales, golf tournaments and making individual donations to support education in their local communities. The culmination of year round fundraising for Loews Miami Beach is the group-based 18-hole, scramble format tournament, held at the Miami Beach Golf Club. Since 2010, the tournament has raised nearly $150,000 in resources for classrooms and students across Miami Dade County.

“We are thrilled to participate, for the second year, in the Loews Miami Beach Celebrity Golf Tournament,” said Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and the Chair for The Foundation for New Education Initiatives. “It is through philanthropic donors, like the Loews Miami Beach Hotel that we are able to give back to the local schools in our area and fund innovations beyond the basics that will keep our schools, our graduates, and our community competitive in the decades ahead.”

In this year’s golf tournament, celebrity Chef Josh Capon from NYC’s beloved Lure Fishbar, and three time NYC Burger Bash winner, whose celebrity frequented restaurant in SOHO opens in South Beach this fall, will serve a gourmet seafood feast for lunch alongside the resorts’ Executive Chef Frederic Delaire. Each foursome will feature a celebrity player, with special giveaways and a top-notch silent auction with a multitude of sought-after luxury items.

“The support we have received from Loews Hotels in helping teachers across the country acquire the materials and resources their students need in the classroom has been tremendous,” said Charles Best, CEO of DonorsChoose.org.

The jet set will have something else to love come December’s Art Basel week with the grand opening of Miami Beach’s newest hotspot Adoré Nightclub. The venture brings together nightlife moguls Cy Waits and Cory McCormack of Ocean First Group, the masterminds behind some of Las Vegas’ most sought after nightlife establishments; Waits of XS in the Encore and Tryst at the Wynn and McCormack of Body English, Rehab and Wasted Space at the Hard Rock Hotel. Adorned in gold, the venue surpasses the traditional concepts of Miami Beach nightlife, providing a lavish outlet for V.I.P. guests, superstar DJs and celebrities to play.

“We are excited to expand to Miami Beach,” says Waits. “It’s a capital of nightlife worldwide and we look forward to bringing our vision to the city,” says McCormack.

Located on iconic Collins Ave and beside the boutique Boulan Hotel, Adoré will host world renowned DJs and performers alike. Inspired by a forgotten cathedral’s fall from grace, Adoré features a decadent candle bar with engraved antique mirrors downstairs with a darker hanging chain bar to refresh mezzanine level guests. The deep reds and glowing ambers create an atmosphere that is both sweet and sinful, where guests can explore the intimately hidden corners of the venue. Luxurious booths circle the dance floor, while a glowing cathedral ceiling floats above the stage and DJ.

In addition to the nightclub’s plush décor, the 12,000-square-foot space will also be equipped with the finest sound and lighting systems in the city. Adoré will feature the most elite sound system in Miami using the latest line by Funktion-One, the industry leader of premier nightclub audio systems. With over 100,000 watts of hi-fidelity power clients and artists can expect an enhanced nightclub experience unparalleled by other venues.

Setting new standards in nightclub technology, SJ Lighting has created a lighting and video design that raises the bar for world-class clubbing. Partygoers will vibe to the DJ’s tempo late into the morning hours under a custom three-dimensional LED sphere, propelling the disco ball concept into the 21st century. While facing the DJ booth, guests will discover a floor to ceiling LED display showcasing video imagery and effects that are fully integrated into the control systems of the club. Expect the imagery, color and effects to flow together seamlessly with the music and atmosphere of the night. Adoré’s control system is considered the industry standard throughout the professional lighting community, having been implemented at esteemed events including EDM festivals, the Olympics and the Super Bowl.

“Every year, the YPO Gala is a must-attend social event which benefits an exceptional arts organization, and our 2013 Gala will truly be a night to remember,” said Patricia Mederos, President of YPO. “We are so grateful to this year’s gala sponsors without whom YPO would not be able to further its mission of opera education.”

Founded in l955, YPO is supported by a group of women who work without staff to advocate educational music programs and the Florida Grand Opera, the gala’s proceeds will fund music and opera educational programs, including a Girl Scout Workshop for more than 500 Girl Scouts and an annual teachers’ workshop which offers continuing education credits for 150 Miami-Dade and Broward County teachers on opera education in the classroom. ¡Suénalo! (sweh-nah-low) verb
1. To sound, slap, or play upon a
musical instrument, object, or person.

Latin funk. Fusion. Jam band. Multicultural cocktail. Afro-Latin-Baby-Makin’-Descarga-Funk. Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.

What started out as a unique jam project, Uma Galera became a sound made up of 7 different cultures and styles from allover the world.
Formed from a mix of long time friendships to quick first glance love & chemistry, the band expresses and lives strongly through the global message of unity and peace.
It’s focuses are on bringing to the stage an amazing sound experience, combined with a fun performance for every crowd-member to enjoy. With trippy chill-out soul grooves to tons of jump-on-your-feet tunes, Uma Galera has something for everyone.
Inspired by a mix of cultures, styles, and rhythms from all around the world (with band members from Uruguay, Venezuela,Argentina,Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Brazil, Cuba, and Colombia) the band is among the new generation of musicians giving birth to new soul & world music. Ska, funk, Jazz, Cumbia, Samba, Reggae, Salsa, Candombe, Punk, Rock, Hip-Hop, Bossa Nova, and Blues are just some of the styles that Uma Galera incorporates into their music performances.
And the band does not limit their sound, as they also interpret a wide range of covers from many of their favorite new and old artists such as, Amy Winehouse, James Brown, Bob Marley, Adele, Franz Ferdinand & Pink Floyd, etc…

In Brazil, the word Galera first meant “the most popular place in a football stadium” and where the coolest and most excited fans went to, today it means “A big group of friends”.

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

Brian Lynch

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

Brian’s most recent CD releases as a leader include the Downbeat 5 star rated Unsung Heroes project (Hollistic MusicWorks), ConClave Vol. 2 with his Spheres Of Influence group (CrissCross), the Grammy© Award winning Simpático featuring Eddie Palmieri (ArtistShare), and Bolero Nights For Billie Holiday (Venus).

“You can lose yourself in the pure energy of his playing, but at any moment you can switch your attention to the logic and craftsmanship of his music and find multiple rewards.” NEIL TESSER, Jazziz

“Lynch demonstrates that a dedicated, knowledgeable jazzman can play a diversity of styles with telling authenticity, and make the renditions extremely appealing to both musician and neophyte…Lynch is simply first-rate.” ZAN STEWART, Downbeat

Ray Liriano – Cantante/Compositor Dominicano, nos brinda una propuesta como trio cargada de Las influencias de rock alternativo, folk y ritmos latinos.

Bachaco is an international Afro-Caribbean Roots Rock band based out of Miami, Florida in the U.S. Their music successfully blends feel-good and conscious lyrics through the mix of Reggae, Dancehall and Ska with Rock, Hip-Hop and Colombian Cumbia. Their recent and much anticipated self-titled independent debut album is out now and features their hit singles “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” and “Ni Una Lagrima” Their “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” video, produced by Latin Grammy Winner video director Cesar Rodriguez, achieved rotation on MTV Tr3s and MTV Latin America. BACHACO was also selected as “Descubre & Download” Artist of the Month on the MTV Tr3s website during November 2012 where visitors downloaded the hit single “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” completely free. Both singles reached the top 20 charts on AOL Radio’s Rock Latino station with “Cumbia pa’ la Nena” on #3 and “Ni Una Lagrima” on #1. BACHACO’s debut album also includes the hit singles “Jamaican Cumbia” as well as a special collaboration with South American Reggae legends Gondwana on “Cruzando Fronteras.”

Since its formation in 2007, Bachaco has performed over 300 concerts all the way from Argentina to Canada sharing stage and performing at the same events and festivals as other big names in the reggae and world music scenes such as Israel Vibration, Toots & The Maytals, Tribal Seeds, Ozomatli, Luciano, Easy Star All-stars, Midnite, Cultura Profetica, Gondwana, Los Cafres, Los Pericos, Bahiano, Alika, Jarabe de Palo, Los Amigos Invisibles, WAR, King Chango and many more. Bachaco has also showcased during the SXSW and LAMC music conferences thanks to support from BMI.

Bachaco’s members hail from Venezuela, Colombia, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Peru and the U.S. allowing their songs to naturally flow in both English and Spanish but the true language Bachaco speaks is its own music and what they transmit: An Explosive International High Energy Groove! That is simply the result of the band’s own diverse range of nationalities. BACHACO is a true multi-cultural experience.

Bachaco was initially conceived by Venezuelan brothers Edilberto “Eddy” Morillo, lead vocals, and Jose Morillo, bass and vocals, along with Domingo Medina on drums, also from Venezuela. The current 8-piece line up consists of: Edilberto “Eddy” Morillo on vocals, Domingo Medina on drums, Jamaican guitarist and vocalist Matthew Jacquette, Bruce McKinnon Jr., Miami-born half Colombian half Irish, on trumpet and vocals, Alexander Cruz, Puerto Rican, on trombone, Farid Cure on electric guitar, from Colombia, and Cristian “Mumbles” Rocha from Peru. Recently added to the lineup, John “JP” Guinan on SAX.

What is a Bachaco? The word Bachaco is the name given to a Leafcutter Ant in Venezuela. The same type of ant is found accross that Amazon Rainforest and in countries such as Panama, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil. The insect is used by Venezuelan indians to create a “picante” (hot sauce). We could say Bachaco is a musical Picante.

“Bienvenidos a vivir, bienvenidos a soñar” (welcome to live, welcome to dream) our first CD, brought us a lot of learning in different aspects of our life; in a musical and a personal way. After this dream came true… what it is next: work and work. Today El Zaguán is in the process of exploration, where we have found new rhythms, new ideas, and a new road without losing our essence and the wave that represent El Zaguán, giving us as a result song that will be heard soon and that probably would be in our next work.

However, If you haven’t heard about us until now; What is El Zaguán?:

El Zaguán is a rock group that has elements of reggae, salsa, blues, pop and Rock & Roll; with a lot of COLOMBIAN touch, and with the mix of letters about our own daily experiences, it gives fun spaces to whom heard the songs and to the group; giving as a result a music “sancocho” with a lot of flavor.

The band is made up by three musicians since 2008 that have been working on other projects during the past years, specially playing cover at some Medellin bars. They are: Juan Esteban Arango as the singer, Miguel Arango as the drummer and Lucas Alvarez on the keyboards.

At the moment the band is on the pre-production for the second album with the hand of Sound Node. Drums, percussion and bass were recorded in Medellin, keyboards in Bogota and guitars and voice in London.

PALO! hits the stage with the Afro-Cuban Funk.

PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO! immediately began a residency at Hoy como Ayer, one of the area’s best live music clubs. They soon started performing in many other area venues. PALO! has been featured at events such as Carnaval on the Mile, Art in the Park, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair, Arsht Center Fall for the Arts, and the Miami Music Festival.

PALO! has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida.

The band is comprised of seventeen professional musicians whose cumulative experience totals over five hundred years. Our members have worked with an exhaustive list of luminaries in entertainment including Frank, the Chairman of the Board. Our purpose is to facilitate the performance of our music to a new and thirsty audience.
The band’s library features over one thousand arrangements by such notables as Tommy Newsom, Don Sebesky, Buddy Rich, Doc Severinson, Count Basie, and Sam Nestico. The list goes on and on but basically they are the best and it is our hope to present and preserve the only true original American music form and allow a new audience to discover it. Our particular type of band draws an incredible amount of attention just by its appearance.

The thunderous drums of samba will shake Miami this Halloween! Celebrate the Brazilian way with music, dancing, drink specials, delicious food and happy people.

Prizes for the sexiest, scariest and most original costumes.
Sponsored by Cafe Brasil Radio Show, Sundays 6pm on 88.9FM WDNA, Acontece.com, Gazeta Brazilian News.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose realized she had the gift of singing at a very early age.

Everyone from her mother’s side was a musician. She is the great-grand daughter of the conductor and composer CUPERTINO DE MENEZES and grand daughter of the guitar player and composer MANUEL DE MENEZES. Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a “choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and “Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30’s – Noel Rosa.

She started singing professionally with the OCTETO RIO ORCHESTRA performing jn the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. She studied vocal technique with Graciela di Salerno, Nancy Miranda and Suely Mesquita. She also studied theory and ear training at the Instituto Vila Lobos and Centro de Instrução Musical Ian Guest.

Rose graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a student, she was involved in various theatrical productions with the group “A QUEM INTERESSA.”

Rose Max performed extensively as a soloist with the vocal group AEQUALE under the direction of acclaimed-musical director ANDRÉ PROTÁSIO. Gaining interest and respect locally, she started working with a number of different bands. One of her best experiences was performing at “CLUBE DO SAMBA” (Samba Club) where she had a chance to learn with some of the big names of Brazilian music, such as Maestro Licinho, Neco, Antonio Carlos Tourinho, João Nogueira, and Roberto Ribeiro. She also started working as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, which led to the opportunity of backing up some of Brazil’ s most renowned singers.

Rose moved to Miami in October of 1993, where she has been continuing to grow and develop musically, and by keeping a constant performance schedule, she has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities. She won the BRAZILIAN PRESS AWARD for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.

PAX Miami Presents
the SERIOUS MULTI JAZZ JAM SESSION
Host: Grammy© Award winning trumpeter BRIAN LYNCH and his Artist Ensemble
Mondays at 8:30 PM starting January 14th, 2013

PAX Miami
337 Southwest 8th Street Miami, FL 33130
(305) 640-5847

Picadillo, a musical group from Spain, presents its debut album, Las cosas de la vida. Picadillo was formed in August, 2012, in Lavapies, Madrid, when producer Hector Aguero along with two vocalists, Rey Rodriguez and Sol Ruiz joined and began a musical experiment that launched the project. Later joined with trumpeter, percussionist, Jochi, which added the key element to the classic sound of the band. When these musicians of cuban origin came together they created a musical “Picadillo”, (originally a creole recipe), revisiting vintage cuban rhythms like the danzon, boogaloo, cha cha cha and combining with New Orleans trad Jazz, second line, soul and country. They naturally create the link from Cuba to New Orleans. With energetic live performances, they capture audiences with their son electrico. Las cosas de la vida, was recorded at DoReMix studios in Madrid and mixed and mastered by Luis Duran at PM Records en Cuba, in Nov 2012. It was independently released and completed thanks to crowdfunding

“very cerebral comedy” – NY Times

A cerebral blend of stand-up comedy with science. Tim Lee is a comedian with a Ph.D. who’s become an internet sensation with more than 4 million views of his YouTube videos.

“You know how Larry the Cable Guy’s act pretty much consists of him yelling “Git ‘er done!” every five minutes or so? Scientist-turned-comic Tim Lee’s material is the diametric opposite. Lee, who got his PhD before realizing where his true talents lay, blends science talk (complete with PowerPoint presentations) with comedy. The hilarious result is like what would happen if you crossed your high-school chem teacher with George Carlin”

The Dark Dining Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball Dazzles Miami

Sexy & Scrumptious Dining in the Dark

The talented Chef Adrianne Calvo compiled quite a delectable feast for all the senses with her legendary Dining in the Dark at the Coral Gables Country Club this past September 20th 2013. She threw an Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball  to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event was adorned and saturated with magnificent ostentatiousness  and scrumptiousness.

Dining in the Dark consisted of a seven course meal where patrons consumed their meal blindfolded. Eating blind amplifies the experience because shutting off one sense accentuates the others and our brain does not prejudge the food based on what we see. Once the food is served, the first step is to touch the food. All dishes had very enticing and interesting textures. We were then instructed to smell the food, which at times was intoxicating in the best way. The mere whiff of the exquisite truffle oil induced a Niagara fall of saliva in our mouths. We have become quite addicted to truffles since this event. Finally, you may taste the food and be marveled by the complex flavors in your mouth. In between the courses, you delighted in sexy sounds like Enigma while enjoying the touch of your dining partner, and fully embarking on and appreciating the entire blind experience.

The event was unique, delightful and delectable. Her fried goat cheese and truffle oil ball were our amaurotic favorite. In addition, to the decadent dinner there was a whole slew of entertainment which included: contortionists, fire dancers, burlesque show (videos below),  live band, body painting, chandelier models, as well as sexy mermaids performing in the pool.

A Palatable Passage to India at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove

Scrumptious Indian Fare Popping Up for a Month at The Ritz Coconut Grove

While Miami has cranked out some sterling places to eat the past few years, we have heard complaints that one must travel to the foreign land of Broward County to get legit Indian food. Well, we are happy to to report that for the next month you can save yourself the trip and head to  The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Miami for Executive Chef Ramesh Kaduru’s A Passage to India at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove.  The profoundly warm and charismatic Chef Ramesh delighted our senses and palates with his complex dishes literally bursting with assorted flavors. Our favorite dishes were the Malai Kofta Curry, potato and cheese dumplings bathed in cashew fondue; the Mughali Chicken, savory Tandoori chicken in a butter masala; the naan, and these addictive dessert dumplings called Gulab Jamun dipped in rose scented syrup. We are drooling as we type and reminisce.

The ambiance and decor are beautiful with paisley, brightly colored fabrics adorning the venue, complete with live Indian musicians and a dancer. The pop-up restaurant will serve delicious Indian cuisine from Oct. 3 through Nov. 3, from 6  to 10 p.m, it is only open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays. We strongly recommend you go and enjoy these delightful dishes before they are gone.

The Tropical Botanic Artists in collaboration with Everglades National Park will present “Botanical Exploration in the Everglades” at the Ernest Coe Center at Everglades National Park in Homestead, Florida, November 1–30, 2013. The Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

The exhibition features 27 original watercolor portraits of plants discovered in the Everglades by 19th and 20th century botanists, and designated with common and scientific names that reflect those intrepid plant explorers.
Artist Kathleen Konicek-Moore and Everglades botanist Jimi Sadle co-curated the exhibition, which is supplemented by a documentary film by local videographer Eric Raits. The film deals with early botanists who braved the biting insects, large reptiles, and poisonous plants that made the Everglades one of the country’s last frontiers of botanical exploration.

Included in the show are informational panels about botanical exploration and field collecting, how plants are named, and ways Everglades plants were used by native peoples.

The exhibit opening Saturday October 19, 2013 at 1310 Gallery Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts reflects on the work of daughter and mother. The exhibit, “Tracing the Imaginary” focuses on the artwork of daughter and mother. Both women share a similar trajectory starting their carrier as a raw artist. Sonia Baez-Hernandez after a decade of working in art and sociology got a MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Francisca Hernandez began doing ceramic after retired. In 1998 Hernandez began to develop her drawings and mastering skill.

Hernandez’s drawings transport the audience to imaginary gardens, symbolism, and fragmentation of multiple spaces. In contrast, Baez-Hernandez experiments with a realm of micros organic or anthropomorphic forms that emerge as part of a dialogue between surrealistic overtones, and gestural marking. The exhibition includes two-dimensional pieces, installation art, found –object assemblages, and a performance by Baez-Hernandez. Some of their artworks transform the pitch of illness into artistic expressions and emanate therapeutic value.

In terms of themes and cooking styles, each kitchen collaboration (hence the series’ name) will differ but the end result will be the same – an unforgettable culinary experience featuring a not-to-be-repeated multi-course dinner created by DeRosa and truly talented guest chefs.

Priced at $95 per person, including tax and gratuity, guests will be welcomed with a complimentary signature cocktail and an array of hors d’oeuvres. Start time: 7 p.m. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased in advance via http://tongueandcheek.brownpapertickets.com.

Concluding the “KITCHEN COLLAB” three part series will be Chef Paula DaSilva on Wednesday, November 20, who recently took the helm of 3030 Ocean at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale.

Chef Clay Conley opened BÅ«ccan in Palm Beach, Florida in 2011. He wanted to create a casually sophisticated space that offered small plates with big flavors, and replicate the camaraderie felt when dining at a friend’s house. The result? Raving accolades, a James Beard Award nomination for Best Chef: South – in both 2012 and 2013 – and an expansion. In February 2012, he opened Imoto (transl: little sister), an intimate, Asian-focused extension of BÅ«ccan. His “progressive American” approach at BÅ«ccan blends the classic comfort of his New England childhood, the rustic boldness of the Mediterranean, and the sensual influence of Latin America. Highlighting contrasting tastes, textures, and temperatures, Clay applies his flair and sense of balance to traditional flavor combinations and dishes. Chef Clay and his restaurants have been recognized in national and international publications including Travel + Leisure, Robb Report, Conde Nast Traveler, Miami Herald, Complot, USA Today, Fodors, Boston Globe, NY Post and Wall Street Journal. BÅ«ccan is listed as Forbes Travel Guide’s “hottest spot” in Palm Beach and as Esquire’s “Where to Eat in South FL Now,” and has received “Best Restaurant” honors from all area publications. Clay has also cooked on Emeril’s Florida,

featured on both Food Network and Cooking Channel, and on The Today Show and Fox and Friends.

3rd Annual ART MACtown at Oxenberg Fine Art & Kelley Roy Gallery 10/12/13

3rd Annual ART MACtown
Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 6:30 to 10pm.
Oxenberg Fine Art and Kelley Roy Gallery
50 NE 29th Street
Miami, FL. 33137
Wynwood Arts District.
Suggested $25 donation at the door.
Complimentary parking will be available.

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served sponsored by Giraffas Brazilian Restaurant Midtown, Machiyas Restaurant Midtown, Lime Fresh Mexican Grill, and Mixtura Peruvian Fusion Restaurant.

Oxenberg Fine Art and Kelley Roy Gallery is proud to host the 3rd Annual ART MACtown. Over 100 original works of art created by the very individuals MACtown serves will be on display and available for purchase. The best news is that anyone can own a unique piece of original artwork created by a very special artist for the very affordable price of $50 for a 10” x 10” canvas.

MACtown’s mission for the past 51 years has been to improve the lives and further the independence of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in South Florida.

“ART MACtown was the vision of international artist George Rodez who first approached me about this project three years ago” said Violet Gonzalez of MACtown“. He came to us with a plan that we thought would not only help MACtown raise some much needed funds but also help the people we serve by offering them an outlet where they could get in touch with their emotions, inner feelings and express themselves through painting. The canvases painted would then be showcased at a reputable art gallery, giving our artists the opportunity to be seen in a world where they can sometimes go unnoticed. Rodez works with each and every one of our clients in helping them express themselves. Some of our artists are non-verbal while others have very little mobility, but it is amazing and nothing short of a miracle to see how they light up when they take that first paintbrush in their hands and begin to paint and create to the best of their ability”.

Miami Celebrates 200 Years of Giuseppe Verdi Grand Opening Reception 10/11/13

Miami Celebrates 200 Years of Giuseppe Verdi Grand Opening Reception
Friday, October 11, 2013 From 6pm-9pm
trittico_verdi_su_bianco_x_mail_1Galleria Ca’ d’Oro | Miami
Design District 4141
Suite 105F – Ground Floor
NE 2nd Avenue
Miami, FL 33137
rsvp required: info@ca-doro.com.

Ca’ d’Oro, the gallery that made their grand appearance in 2010 with the iconic larger than life pink snails during Art Basel Miami Beach has recently relocated from Coral Gables to the epicenter of luxury, the 4141 Building in the Design District. In conjunction to Giuseppe Verdi’s Bicentennial and as a celebration, Ca’ d’Oro Gallery will open it’s golden doors on Friday, October 11th, 2013, with a group exhibition Homage to Verdi and offer to Miami a unique one-in-a-lifetime experience with a vibrant live classical music concert by the prestigious Cameristí della Scala of Milan.

“We are very excited to move to the 4141 Building and form part of the renaissance of the Design District. This is Miami’s future as the arts, fashion, and design destination” says Gloria Porcella, co-owner and curator of Ca’ d’Oro Gallery.

Homage to Verdi is a moving and engaging memorialization to one of the most important opera composers in Italian history, Guiseppe Verdi (October 10, 1813–1901). Curated by Gloria Porcella and Lamberto Petrecca, the exhibition highlights the works of 34 contemporary artists- spanning from Romero Britto, the pop artist Leonardo Hidalgo, award winning composer-artist Alfredo Rapetti Mogol, Monica Casali, eco-friendly artist Erika Calesini, Daniela Pasti Augias, Sasha Torrisi, Gloria Sesana, among other members of the artistic Ca’ d’Oro extended family.

The year 2013 is an auspicious time for Italy, for it is also marks “The Year Of Italian Culture in the United States” and in this stellar alignment the Italian Consulate-General in Miami and with the support of Classical South Florida, the grand opening will be accompanied by a live musical performance by the Cameristi della Scala of Milan, who will be seducing the guests with an exclusive program, absolutely unique in the international music world. It contains “Fantasie” from Verdi’s operas, composed in the 19th century by Italian important composers, sometimes Verdi’s friends and coworkers. These pieces, gifts, and celebrations to the greatness of the composer were lying forgotten and without an editor in world libraries. Thanks to the Camersiti della Scala, they are now discovered and played for the first time in our modern times. Viva Verdi!

The live classical performance will take place on the night of the grand opening. The exhibition will be on display until November 20th, 2013.

poetryPanther Coffee
Miami, Florida

We are hosting a very special edition of (Un)Filtered Poetry at Panther Coffee in honor of the life and art of Israel “Reefa” Hernandez, the 16 yo artist who was killed by police while tagging an abandoned McDonald’s building. His death has deeply affected our community and its artists and we have not forgotten and continue to demand justice be done. This (Un)Filtered will be centered around his memory and those of so many others like him who have lost their lives and seen no justice.

This event comes at the end of a four day series of events centering around #justiceforreefa and we are proud to be part of this movement.

Per usual, we will have an open mic portion for all artists who would like to contribute. We will also have an incredible line up of featured artists including Barbara Trawick, Calvin Made-Son Early, Percival Jordan II Emily Sheila, Bridget Pelaez and more.

In addition to a night of literary bliss, we will have a library of donated books and will be selling them for a donation of $3 dollar, but ask that people give as much as they can because ALL proceeds will go to his family. Some of his art will be on display andhis mother will also be in attendance and will speak on behalf of the family.

This will be a great opportunity to show his family support, as well as come together to remember and celebrate his lie and art. This is our community, our art, our expression. Let us never forget.

Locos Only – Free Beer Tasting #7 10/7/13

Locos Only – Free Beer Tasting #7

The Grove Spot

Miami, Florida 33133

Loco is a word that although Spanish in origin, has entered the English lexicon and become part of popular culture. You would be hard pressed to find a person in the U.S. who did not fully understand the meaning of the word loco. It is used in everyday speech, in advertisements and even literature. It will soon join the ranks of other assimilated foreign word like lingerie, soufflé and kindergarten. And rightfully so. It’s words like loco which give our language a little diversity…

Ok. Sorry. We misunderstood the writing assignment. This invitation is for Locals Only, not Locos Only. Let’s start again.

Craft beer is an amazing world. One that is really driven by the local communities and local breweries. This locally-sourced movement is popular in beer and other culinary fields. We are sure you’ve seen your share of farm-to-table restaurants and ones who will only serve and use local ingredients. In a similar way, local craft beer is all about keeping things close. Although names like Sam Adams, Dogfish Head and Magic Hat are national players, it would have never been possible with the support of their local market and local fan base. It is important to support your local breweries. At this point we have three commercial breweries in Miami-Dade and Broward, Schnebly – Miami Brewing, Wynwood Brewing, and Funky Buddha. There are a few more in the building process like M.I.A. Brewing, Biscayne Bay Brewing, Gravity Brewlab and others too. We also have several brewpubs like the venerable Titanic Brewing, Gordon Biersch, The Abbey and Organic Brewing. We also have, what we like to call, breweries to be. These are groups producing high-quality and innovative beers as they plan their entrance into the marketplace. We have several like Forth Age, Opus Ales, Invasive Species and Midnight City who have really been called into action and providing local craft beer fans with neat and edgy brews. The bottom line is that although we do not have (at this point) a large number of commercial brewing, we do have a strong number of local brewers producing great beers. Come get a sneak peek at what they’ll be pouring at Grovetoberfest at our 7th and final tasting, Locals Only on Monday Oct 7 at The Grove Spot.

Virginia Fifield’s large-scale charcoal drawings explore how our perception of self, and sense of dominance and ownership distorts our relationship to nature. Hyper-realistic images of animal subjects are re-presented in a stark, over-scale format, deliberately devoid of color and context, aiming to spark contemplation and internal dialogue about our coexistence with the natural world. Originally from Toronto, Fifield earned her BFA from York University and studied architecture at University of Toronto. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, the Boca Raton Museum, The Hollywood Art and Culture Center and has been featured on PBS.

Broward College’s North Campus expands upon its inaugural 2012 / 2013 Artist Talk series with a new line-up of some of South Florida’s most groundbreaking, local and internationally acclaimed artists visual artists. Each of the up and coming and internationally renowned artists involved will present the diverse concepts and aesthetics within their respective bodies of work and direct a hands-on workshop the following night to further allow the public to experience and learn from their artistic processes.

Miami Light Project is proud to celebrate the start of our 24th Contemporary Performance Series with an exclusive engagement of the world renowned British band the Tiger Lillies, November 1-2, 2013 at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

The Tiger Lillies defy any singular description and operate within their own eccentric definitions. Founded in 1989, the Tiger Lillies are Martyn Jacques (angel-voiced, accordion playing front man and song writer), Adrian Stout (upright Bass and toy sheep) and Adrian Huge (child’s drum kit and assorted plastic and wooden objects). Treading a fine line between Brecht/Weill opera, English music hall, Gypsy folk and even left-bank Parisian buskers, the Tiger Lillies are like no other band around and they tour the world, wowing audiences with their simply delicious, devilish music.

One moment their blasphemous, perverse irreverence shocks (often leaving their audience in uncontrollable fits of laughter), the next they still the air with beautiful ballads of death, cruelty or depravity. They move between punk-like clown ditties to deadly serious storytellers in the blink of an eye. No fear of taboos, their subject matter includes rape, crucifixion, bestiality, murder or prostitution, more often than not with a hidden morality at the root of each song. Jacques has a wonderfully clear vision of the world’s inequality, if seen from an all too blood shot eye.

As a result, they captivate with every word and timeless sound they make. For fans (they have a cult following throughout many cities of the world) there is also the fun of being part of something that is so shocking, so naughty! The band pushes all limits; wanting to know how close to damnation each of us is willing to go. And if damnation is on the cards, the Tiger Lillies are taking the express elevator down and from listening to their gorgeous music; they appear to love every second of the ride!

Ruthless! The Musical is a gem of a satirical comedy about the consuming drive for stardom. Suburban housewife Judy Denmark is dull as dull can be, but her daughter, Tina, is the greatest song-and-dance sensation to ever hit the third grade. She’s cute. She dances. She sings. And she would do anything to get the lead role in her school play…ANYTHING! Move over Honey Boo Boo, this outrageous and hysterically funny musical hit garnered rave reviews during its Off-Broadway run in the early 90s, and is ripe for a revival in today’s celebrity driven world.

Actors’ Playhouse’s production will feature pint-size powerhouse Julia Dale as Tina Denmark. National anthem singer Julia Dale has been a feature at Miami HEAT games since her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” garnered international media attention during the NBA Finals in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Julia has since been dubbed the team’s “Good Luck Charm” and is now excited to add professional actress to her credits as she makes her regional theatre debut in Ruthless! The Musical at the Miracle Theatre.

Book and lyrics by Joel Paley, music by Marvin Laird

Performance Schedule: Wednesday – Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
