Health in the Hood, a nonprofit that provides low-income neighborhoods with access to fresh produce and fitness programs, will expand its network of edible community gardens on Sunday by turning a desolate lot in Liberty City into an garden with fresh kale, tomatoes, pole beans, collard greens, okra, and callaloo.
A team of volunteers will create three 40-foot long vegetable beds at the corner of Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest 54th Street. Once in full bloom, the garden will give local residents access to free fresh produce steps from their homes.
““The garden will also serve as the foundation for nutrition and health education programs in Liberty City,†says Asha Loring, executive director of Health in the Hood.
Health in the Hood is partnering with Neighborhood Housing Services and Miami Children’s Initiative to provide health education workshops including healthy eating and fitness classes for children and families in Overtown and Liberty City. The organization already supplies residents in some of Miami’s lowest income neighborhoods with fresh produce from its gardens and health education classes taught by local experts.
