Island City Stage, creating quality professional theatrical experiences focused on the LGBT+ community for a universal audience, will host their very own Behind the Red Curtain community forum entitled “Law Enforcement and the LGBT+ Community – Where are we today?” on Tuesday, September 14, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at its theatre (2304 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors). This presentation coincides with the kickoff of Island City Stage’s 10th anniversary 2021-22 Season with The Twentieth Century Way by Tom Jacobson this October. This true-story scandalous period drama chronicling the 1914 Long Beach sex scandal launched the theatre company’s award-winning decade-long run.

This free, public event will review the advancements of South Florida law enforcement in how they interact with the LGBT+ community and promote diversity and inclusion, internally. Guest panelists will include Lieutenant Paul Auerbach of Broward Sheriff’s Office, Assistant Chief of Police Darren Brodsky of Wilton Manors Police Department, Captain Michael Dodson of Fort Lauderdale Police Department, FAU Professor Emeritus and author Fred Fejes, PhD. and Trans Advocate Kat Rio. This forum is supported by Equality Florida and the GLBX Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce.

The Twentieth Century Way by Tom Jacobson runs from October 1 – 31, 2021. Viewers will become engaged in this true story of two actors who hired themselves out to the Long Beach Police Department in 1914 to entrap “social vagrants” in public restrooms. Thirty-one men were arrested, and the ensuing scandal led to an ordinance against “oral sodomy” in California.

Behind the Red Curtain is a free public forum. Guests may attend in-person or participate virtually. Registration is required by visiting islandcitystage.org.

Island City Stage’s 10th anniversary 2021-22 season will also feature Armature by Andrew Kramer from January 27 – February 27, 2022; Suddenly, Last Summer by Tennessee Williams from March 17 – April 17, 2022; The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam from June 9 – July 10, 2022; and One In Two by Donja R. Love from August 4 – September 4, 2022.

2021 marks 20 years since Michael Richards’ tragic passing at the age of 38 in the attacks on September 11, 2001. To honor this anniversary, Richards’ cousin Dawn Dale and “Michael Richards: Are You Down?” co-curators Alex Fialho and Melissa Levin will be in dialogue with filmmaker, visual artist, and curator Tiona Nekkia McClodden to discuss the ongoing work of stewarding artists’ legacies. Dale has stored and cared for Richards’ artworks for two decades since Richards’ passing; Fialho and Levin have been engaged with curating Richards’ art since 2016; and McClodden has worked with the estates and archives of artists Brad Johnson, Essex Hemphill and Julius Eastman. Together, their conversation will consider the ongoing work of uplifting underknown Black artists, familial care for those who have passed, and amplifying Richards’ artistic practice in the wake of September 11.

KUSH Hospitality Group’s (KHG) Matthew “Kush” Kuscher and the team are preparing for another wild event at Kush Hialeah. KHG events tend to have clever tongue-in-cheek motifs and this one brings a peculiar pop-culture happening to the 305. Beginning Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Noon, is Kush Hialeah’s newest monthly event (taking place on the last Sunday of every month) – Kok Sh*t Bingo in combination with Vintage Flea, KHG’s new flea market concept. Like most KHG events, there will be a non-profit partner benefitting from all the shenanigans – donations will be collected for local Miami Animal Rescue (view wish list of much needed items for dogs and cats HERE).
The unique event brings together food and drinks accompanied by bingo with a twist. During the event, guests purchase drinks to earn a free raffle ticket with a number on it. At exactly 3:05PM a live chicken will be placed in an outdoor chicken coop with a bingo board below it. Whatever number the chicken poops on is the winner. The entire process can take five minutes or an hour. Raffle tickets are limited, but can be obtained with the purchase of any featured cocktail by Skyy Vodka (one ticket per drink); or by donating to Miami Animal Rescue which earns attendees two tickets. Prizes include a $50 Kush Hospitality Group gift card; $50 Kush Hialeah bar tab; swag bags and more. Guests can also enjoy live bluegrass performance by Lonewolf and indulge in a whole gator served Caja China-style. Kush Hialeah is located at 1000 East 16th Street in Hialeah, FL. Telephone: (305) 887-8863; kushhospitality.com.
**While this is all fun and games, it’s important to note that no chicken will be harmed or served in any way during the event. **

Dash Snow rejected a life of privilege to make his own way as an artist on the streets of downtown New York City in the late 1990s. Developing from a notorious graffiti tagger into an international art star, he documented his drug- and alcohol-fueled nights with the surrogate family he formed with friends and fellow artists Ryan McGinley and Dan Colen before his death by heroin overdose in 2009. Drawing from Snow’s unforgettable body of work and involving archival footage, Cheryl Dunn’s exceptional portrait captures his all-too-brief life of reckless excess and creativity.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® (MSABC) presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Hollywood is holding their Making Strides Walk on October 23, 2021, at Huizenga Plaza in Ft. Lauderdale. Making Strides has united communities, companies, and individuals across the country in the fight to end breast cancer for more than two decades. Michele Alter, a 21-year breast cancer survivor and Brittany Zinn, both with the Craig Zinn Automotive Group, are this year’ co-chairs. The two are determined to make this a successful fundraiser. Organizers want everyone to know that even if a person cannot attend in person, the success of this event will depend on enthusiastic individuals who commit to raise funds, in addition to generous donors who will support those participants. The in-person event will keep federal, state, and local health guidelines in mind. As the fall season approaches, event-based decisions may be made to best meet the health and safety needs of everyone involved.

In 2020, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Broward conducted a drive-thru with 174 teams. The event benefited from the support of more than 1,000 participants, local businesses, and organizations, representing various industries. It ranked #1 in the State of Florida with a fundraising revenue of $429,000, and 7th overall of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in the US. The money raised went to breast cancer research and programs geared towards both men and women. According to the American Cancer Society journal, a Cancer Journal for Clinicians, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2021 and 608,570 cancer deaths in the United States. That number may be higher given the COVID spike. It’s believed that people with active cancer may be more susceptible to COVID-19, because of their impaired immune system. That’s why the American Cancer Society® Fort Lauderdale wants people to start fundraising between now and October. People can fuel the fight against breast cancer by downloading the American Cancer Society FUNdraising App to their phones. This will allow people to register for the October event and begin asking

To register, go to www.MakingStridesWalk.org/BrowardFL to join the walk by signing up as an individual or team. Be sure to download the app to your phone and link the dashboard to Facebook. Fun Fact: Those that connect their fundraiser to FB, raise seven times more money.

To learn more about the Making Strides of Broward Presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino-Hollywood or for other information, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.MakingStridesWalk.org/BrowardFL. Shooters Waterfront is proud to host That’s How We Roll “Sushi 101” Thursday, August 19 at 7:00 p.m. The “roll-it-yourself” class teaches all about the art of making, plating, and sake pairing for only $40 per person. Shooters Waterfront’s team of expert sushi chefs provide step-by-step instructions and patrons are encouraged to embrace a new skill set. The class covers basic techniques such as what to prep and the secrets to scouting out the freshest fish. Then the hands-on learning experience begins as attendees learn to roll two of their own sushi rolls before perfecting chopstick dexterity.

Under the chef’s step-by-step guidance, students will learn to wield a rolling mat while crafting two of the restaurant’s popular rolls: the Hamachi Fire roll with Hamachi, jalapeno, romaine, and spicy mayo, and the Kentucky Fried roll with tempura fried chicken tender and a mango sambal slaw. Guests can then enjoy their handmade rolls with a gorgeous sunset view of the Fort Lauderdale waterfront.

Class seating is limited. For reservations, please register via Eventbrite.

Reopened in February 2014, the new Shooters Waterfront features a fresh, coastal-inspired menu in an al fresco dockside dining space featuring three artfully designed cocktail bars and chic outdoor lounge paired with spectacular views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Owned by the reputable restaurant and yacht-provisioning experts of the Grateful Palate, Shooters’ highly regarded team exudes the latest in culinary and waterfront dining trends. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner and features Fort Lauderdale’s most scenic weekend brunch. Boasting 340 feet of dockage and complimentary valet parking, guests are welcome to arrive by land or sea.
