About the Composers:
Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847), known as Fanny Hensel after marriage, was a German composer and pianist of the early Romantic period. Her works include a piano trio, piano quartet, orchestral overture, four cantatas, over 125 piano pieces, and 250 lieder, most unpublished during her lifetime. Praised for her exceptional piano technique, she rarely performed publicly. An anonymous critic lauded her trio in 1847 as a “masterpiece” with “broad, sweeping foundations.” Angela Mace Christian highlights it as one of her most impressive chamber works.

Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) was a prominent British-American composer and violist known for her chamber music featuring the viola. Recognized as a significant British composer during the interwar period and the foremost female composer of her time, she held dual citizenship and spent much time in the U.S., where she settled post-World War II. Despite a limited catalog, Clarke’s compositions are celebrated for their skill and artistic depth.
