About the Composers:
Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) was an American composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher from Little Rock, Arkansas. Educated at the New England Conservatory, she was active in Chicago from 1927 until her death. Price was the first African-American woman recognized as a symphonic composer and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. She composed over 300 works, including four symphonies and concertos. Her mentor, George Whitefield Chadwick encouraged her to experiment with African American folk inspirations in her work. Price’s music reflects her Southern roots and incorporates elements of African-American spirituals, emphasizing rhythm and syncopation.
George Whitefield Chadwick (1854-1931) was an influential American composer of the Second New England School. His works, influenced by the Realist movement, include operas, three symphonies, five string quartets, tone poems, incidental music, songs, and choral anthems. As part of the Boston Six, he helped create a significant body of concert music in the U.S.
