Writing with or for someone else requires what novelist Colum McCann calls “radical empathy,” not just editorial and/or writing skill. In this three-day workshop participants will pair off and exchange stories. So bring a tape recorder and a computer or tablet — anything with a keyboard that will enable you to interview your cohort and then present your version of the story that best defines him or her. We’ll look at some examples of successful commercial collaborations and also try exercises in perception and differing viewpoints – how do you “read” someone else, and then verbalize the results – to kick off the workshop.
