Contemporary Chinese Art Born of Ancient Traditions
Cao Xiaodong and Li Xiaofeng
The country’s first major exhibition of paintings by Cao Xiaodong and porcelain sculpture by Li Xiaofeng.
Although his computerized screen-pattern technique and compositions clearly place Xiaodong in the sphere of contemporary art, his use of traditional tones and the sense of nostalgia from the newspaper and magazine photos he reproduces cause critics to link his unique style with ancient watercolor and ink landscapes. He is well known in China for his 500-portrait mural of Chinese who were famous from 1911 to 1949.
Li Xiaofeng, a 43-year-old Beijing artist, has found a way to link his contemporary work with traditional Chinese art stretching back to the 10th Century. In his art, the links are literal: he sews shards of porcelain from the Song, Ming, Yuan, and Qing dynasties on a leather undergarment to created full-length dresses and men’s jackets, complete with neckties.

César Paternosto
Painting and Sculpture 1970 – 2008
Born in Argentina in 1931, César Paternosto has exhibited widely in Latin America and abroad. Since he began working as an artist in the early 1960s, Paternosto has been in the vanguard of abstraction in Latin America. An expert on the symbolic systems of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Paternosto has used his own photography and drawings to document and analyze the ancient remains of the region. Paternosto’s exploration of Amerindian abstraction has fueled his artistic work of the last twenty years.
“[…] Ever since the early 1930s, when Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian’s studio and had that marvelous vision of imagining his neat rectangles as if they were flying through space, nobody had achieved a similar effect to the one conceived and executed by Paternosto with his pictures painted on the sides of the canvas, with the resulting effect described earlier, of glowing weightlessness.”
Francisco Calvo Serraller, The Edge of Light, in César Paternosto, exhibition catalogue; Segovia: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, 2004.

Recent Work
by Gilda Sacasas
The art of Gilda Sacasas evokes the distinctive character of the eternal feminine. Her paintings are a poetic expression of her dreams and surroundings, created to enchant and visually stimulate the viewer’s imagination. In this exhibition the women appear to be confident and strong, yet at the same time feminine and soft. Sacasas is an artist of intense expression, has the power to impress the mind and arouse feelings of love, life and spirit.
Sacasas is a Cuban American contemporary artist who focuses on figures and color. Colors that endow her pieces with light, depth, mood, movement and energy projecting inner spiritual peace. Through her bold use of color, the real world she sees, becomes her world on canvas. Her experiences, memories and feelings, painting from the heart.
