Miami Dade College Celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a Major Art Exhibition and Sale at its Historic Freedom Tower

Miami Dade College has taken things a step further, mounting a major exhibition with the intention of selling its contents. It is a challenge that can only be met through the cooperation of all those who love art, belong to the art world or simply think that helping the young achieve their goals makes the difference. smART is one of many possible readings of the contribution to contemporary art made by a good number of Latin American artists. All the artworks for sale in smART are provided by prestigious galleries and artists throughout the Americas.

Miami Dade College (MDC), long known as the cultural anchor in the region, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a landmark art exhibition and sale, smART, that will run from November 30 through December 15, at its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower. On Monday, November 29, 2010, at 6 p.m., the college will host an “invitation only” opening reception. The working media is welcome.

smART is a major exhibition and art sale that presents a unique opportunity to survey and purchase works from a select roster of top contemporary and emerging Latin American artists. It is the first time in many years that such an exhibition is held locally. All of the 131 pieces are available for sale, with proceeds going to the MDC American Dream Scholarship Fund, which helps the college carry out its mission of changing lives through the opportunity of a quality education. Showcasing work will be 86 artists and 32 renowned galleries representing 8 countries.

“It is a core value of our college to provide and support cultural initiatives that complement academics and promote the advancement and appreciation of the arts,” said Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, president of MDC. “smART will showcase excellent art from established and emerging artists from throughout the Americas while at the same time providing scholarship opportunities for our students.”

Among the artists whose work will be featured are Guillermo Kuitca, León Ferrari, Tania Candiani, Luís Gispert, José Antonio Hernández Díez and Danilo Dueñas.

Miami Dade College has a long and rich history of involvement in the cultural arts, providing South Florida with a vast array of artistic and literary offerings including The Miami Book Fair International, The Florida Center for the Literary Arts, The Miami International Film Festival, the Cultura del Lobo performance arts series, The Cuban Cinema Series, the Miami Leadership Roundtable speakers’ series, numerous renowned campus art galleries and theaters, and the nationally recognized School of Entertainment and Design Technology. With an enrollment of more than 170,000 students, MDC is the largest institution of higher education in the country and is a national model for many of its programs. The college’s eight campuses and outreach centers offer more than 300 distinct degree programs including baccalaureate, associate in arts and science degrees and numerous career training certificates leading to in-demand jobs.
