Anelys Alvarez, researcher and professor of Cuban art history will conduct a three-lecture series and power-point presentation in Spanish titled Cuban Painting at the Turn of the Century, starting on January 26 and continuing through February 9, 2011. All lectures will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m at Cernuda Arte 3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, Florida.

The series will explore a period in Cuban art history when significant artistic innovation and changes were implemented by a group of talented painters, between the decades of 1878 and 1927. At the same time, the talks will focus on how these artists’ creations and contributions empowered the vital link between tradition and novelty, knotting 19th century heritage and the vanguard art that followed.

In this illuminating presentation, Professor Alvarez promises to offer new insights and depths of understanding on a subject that needs to be revisited and reevaluated in its importance.

Professor Alvarez studied Art History at the University of Havana – where she earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees and taught Art History in its Department of Art History and Letters, from 2005 through 2010. Professor Alvarez has imparted art courses in the subjects of Universal Art, Cuban Art, Spanish Art and the Art of the 20th Century, among others. She has given lectures as a guest speaker in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana and has collaborated in research projects with this and other Cuban cultural institutions.
