7:30 PM The Opening Concert
New World Center opens with performances of Wagner’s Overture to The Flying Dutchman, which foreshadows a dramatic adventure parallel to that of the new campus with sweeping waves and brooding lyricism, and the world premiere of Polaris: Voyage for Orchestra by composer Thomas Adès, featuring a film by filmmaker and artist Tal Rosner. The celebration continues with Copland’s Third Symphony. Conjuring vast landscapes and soaring spirits, the quintessential American sound comes to life with the Symphony’s folk-inspired melodies and quote of the famous Fanfare for the Common Man.
