Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160

Deep Impact Chief Operational Officer and avid racer Michael Rojas will take to the waters off of Sunny Isles Beach on Saturday, June 12, 2010 to defend his Center Console Class championship title in the 3rd annual Bimini Ocean Challenge. Rojas and racing partner Tim Gallagher, aim to maneuver their Deep Impact crafted 360 FS Quad, powered by four 350 horsepower Mercury Racing engines, down the 106-mile stretch of sea to Bimini and back to Haulover Beach Park. Rojas will look to beat the 1 hour 25 minute mark that brought him his first victory in 2009. A repeat win would provide yet another token of merit to his burgeoning Miami-based manufacturing company of high performance power boats, which has experienced a recent revitalization ever since the former magna cum laude finance graduate took over the reigns in 2009 to spearhead the restructuring of the Deep Impact brand.

The Bimini Ocean Challenge is just one portion of the five-day Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Power Boat Challenge, a charitable endeavor which aims to raise funds for the restoration of the now defunct Miami Marine Stadium in Key Biscayne, once the official home of speed boat racing in Miami. The events begin on Thursday, June 11 and culminate on Monday, June 14, 2010. Sole on the Ocean hotel in Sunny Isles Beach will host viewing parties throughout the weekend.

Deep Impact is a Miami-based renowned manufacturer of high-quality, high-performance sport-fishing powerboats that utilizes the factory direct sales method. With a revolutionary double-step hull, high-tech materials, seamless finish and European design, Deep Impact’s boats offer both superior performance and sublime luxury. River Lounge launches a brand new happy hour 6/11/10

ONE YEAR LATER AND RIVER LOUNGE IS STILL MIXING IT UP
Launching a brand new happy hour and lots of other surprises

Recognized as one of the chicest places to have a cocktail, River Lounge has established a name in South Florida as one of the premiere lounges in the city. When the venue opened its doors, all were excited to view its lovely décor, classy ambiance and gorgeous view of the Miami River. With its 30ft ceilings, LED lighting, circular bar, flat screen TVs, custom lighting fixtures, outdoor and indoor seating and custom lounge furniture the venue became a favorite for Miami’s affluent professionals. A year later and River Lounge is mixing’ it up for patrons.

Launching on Friday, June 11, 2010 “Happy Hour on The River” will commence from 5:00PM-10:00PM offering live music and 2 for 1 drinks. For the martini lover, $4 martinis will be available from 5:00PM-7:00PM. So whether shaken, stirred or fruit flavored, there will be a delicious choice for every taste.

River Lounge was a concept created by Sunset Entertainment Group’s dynamic duo Chris Breed and Michael Gruber. These gentlemen have a track record that truly reinforces why River Lounge rapidly became a Miami hotspot. With such successful and legendary venues as The Tropicana, Teddy’s at the Roosevelt Hotel, Cabana Club, Sterling Steakhouse, Green Door, and the White Lotus, South Florida rapidly embraced their different approach to nightlife.

With a one year anniversary now approaching, the venue will unveil a series of spectacular changes. “Change is what the area is all about. We came into Downtown before a few others jumped on board. We took the risk, as we knew that Miamians wanted more; more class, more beauty and we wanted to provide them with a lovely venue that exemplified relaxed elegance,” said Michael Gruber.

New features will include live music, weekly art events, on-going fashions shows, guest DJs and a re-vamped Happy Hour. With this “re-vamp” those who wish to sip a cocktail after work can expect that and then some as the River Lounge team will provide them with all the reason to come out after a rough day at the office.

Located in Downtown Miami and away from South Beach, this gorgeous space will continue to cater to the active professional, corporate and social scene as it has for the last several months. But will continue to please the most discerning of Miami patrons by updating the already unique cocktail list and adding even more choices to the signature martini list.

With all the new tweaks and oh so fab new events set in place, River Lounge will gear up to celebrate an electrifying one year anniversary this August. For those who got on the list for their huge grand opening, expect a soiree just as big if not bigger. “To please the South Florida patron, you have to mix up a lot more than your martinis. “You have to [always] keep it fresh. Here we offer them casual elegance,” said Shawn Finkel, general manager of River Lounge.

River Lounge is located inside the Epic Hotel & Residences located at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami, FL 33131.

Cespedes Studios Art Show Invite 6/12/10

GAB GALLERY 105 Northwest 23rd st Miami, FL

Cespedes Studios Gets Personal!
As many of you know I moved to Miami nine months ago, determined to let out my voice as an artist and be heard. It has been a transformational period for me personally and creatively in which I have grown and found a new voice- one that is vibrant, colorful and true and which expresses my happiness and appreciation for life. Throughout my journey in Miami I have truly become a woman and created a life filled with many adventurous opportunities and my art has blossomed as a result of it.
This Saturday, June 12th, I am proud to announce the premiere of my first Wynwood Art Show “Colores de Amor”. This collection was inspired by the love between a man and a woman and all that they created together, but then had to watch fall apart. The ending to this story isn’t a sad one and to find out why please join me this Saturday at GAB Gallery from 7-11pm.

“Sticky & Sweet” will run from April 10, 2010 through June 29, 2010. Regular gallery visiting hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Locust Projects presents How To Read A Book Reception 6/12/10

“HOW TO READ A BOOK”
Curated by Michael Wilson
Reception: Saturday, June 12, 7-10pm
Through June 19

Locust Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition curated by New York-based critic Michael Wilson, featuring work by Becky Beasley, Guy Ben-Ner, Lorin Davies, Harrell Fletcher, Jeff Gabel, Anna Gray and Ryan Wilson Paulsen, Graham Parker, Christina Pettersson, Leanne Shapton, Eve K. Tremblay, and Matt Wiegle.

“How to Read a Book” is an exhibition of contemporary art derived from, influenced by, or playfully exploitative of influential works of fiction, with a particular emphasis on celebrated ‘classic’ novels. The exhibition highlights work that reflects on ideas of longevity and adaptability, originality and authorship. It examines the process of translation from one medium to another, and the durability – or otherwise – of the Western literary canon as a source for new visual culture. The show’s title is appropriated from that of Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren’s famous study of 1940, which argues for an educational system based on a list of “Great Books.” While the emphasis predates a postcolonial view and now has connotations of cultural conservatism, many of the cited volumes remain touchstones for radical thinkers of all kinds, artists very much among them. “How to Read a Book” looks at how a selection of such individuals have variously celebrated and contested the authority and autonomy of their chosen inspirations.

While Matt Wiegle’s drawings of scenes from Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian constitute an idiosyncratic attempt at illustration and Leanne Shapton’s covers for Charlotte Brontë’s ouevre offer a subtle reflection on the influence of design on reading, Guy Ben-Ner’s home-movie version of Moby Dick, Harrell Fletcher’s partial reading of Ulysses, and Jeff Gabel’s animated take on Thomas Mann’s Gladius Dei experiment with the possibilities of free adaptation. Other artists in the show exploit their sources as support structures for more or less tangential projects, looking at literature from the perspectives of reader and writer, interpreter and analyst. Anna Gray and Ryan Wilson Paulsen dissect To the Lighthouse according to its author’s mentions of different colors, while Graham Parker reveals the mining of Persuasion and David Copperfield by e-mail spammers, and Eve K. Tremblay reflects on the process and meaning of learning a foundational text by heart. Becky Beasley and Christina Pettersson approach writers’ real and invented environments by way of allusive objects and images, while Lorin Davies aligns Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness with the London A-Z guide, suggesting that territories, and the books that shadow them, are both in constant flux.

Michael Wilson (b. 1970 in London, England) lives and works in Brooklyn. Wilson received an MFA from the University of Ulster at Belfast in 1996, and an MA(RCA) from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1999. His writing has appeared in Art Monthly, Artforum, Modern Painters, Time Out New York, and elsewhere, and he has contributed to exhibition catalogues published by Art in General, the Asia Society, Matthew Marks Gallery, and P. S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, among others. His most recent curatorial project, a collaboration with Frantiska and Tim Gilman-Sevcik, was “Slow Glass” at Lisa Cooley, New York (2008).

Dee Jay K-N-S is not your ordinary D.J.; he is a turntablist. A turntablist is one who can manipulate sounds with vinyl. Mastering the art of the scratch, with just using his bare hands. K-N-S is a 2-in-1 man. He can scratch with the best of them and can also finesse a beat. The MPC2500 and various beat making equipment are his tools of the trade. K-N-S a.k.a. DIWREK is not a new jack to the game (D.Jing since ’93). His resume is quite impressive. He has hosted a plethora of events, been on many radio shows, flew to other countries to showcase his talent, produces, engineers sound, is an entrepreneur, and has hosted one of the first underground hip hop shows in South Florida..

Miami-based artist Miguel Paredes unveils Wynwood mural during Art Walk 6/12/10

Pop artist & urban impressionist Miguel Paredes
“Pulgha World” Mosaic Mural Unveiling at Wynwood Art District, FL
Date: Saturday, June 12, 2010 during Wynwood’s 2nd Saturday Art Walk
Time: 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Location: 2311 NW 2nd Ave. Miami, FL. 33127
Facebook Invite

Acclaimed Miami-based pop artist and urban impressionist, Miguel Paredes, is gearing up for a busy season throughout the remainder of 2010. His most recent solo exhibition, The Manifestation of Cross-Over Art, opened to rave reviews during last year’s Art Basel Miami Beach and since then has garnered the artist much attention in local, national and international levels. Paredes’ first artistic endeavor begins this upcoming weekend during Wynwood’s “2nd Saturdays” Art Walk on June 12, 2010.

The mural features Paredes’ iconic diminutive anime flea “Pulgha” and boasts multiple, vibrant flowers as well as the artist’s signature graffiti work. Paredes’ rebellious characters from his Los Niños collection are also featured on the 18 X 26 mosaic mural. “Pulgha World” is made up of 550 tiles and is set to add a playful splash of color to the urban streets of Wynwood. In addition, this mural will also serve as a preview to the artist’s private gallery located in the same street and opening later this summer.

“Pulgha World” has been in production for the past couple of weeks. Paredes has already received positive feedback from neighboring galleries and artists who are pleased with the work in progress as it is something that Wynwood hasn’t seen before. Locals are happy to have such a large piece of colorful artwork displayed in the bourgeoning area.

Paredes, a New York native, combines cutting-edge styles of street art, pop art and Japanese animation to create distinct, trend-forward pieces. Drawing inspiration from pop icons such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, he has created his own niche of street graffiti, landscape and pop art affording him the ability to singlehandedly crossover from street walls to creating decorative art. Over the years, Paredes took the Miami Beach art scene by storm, selling out numerous venues to become one of the most prosperous local artists. Paredes, who has been Miami Beach based for over two decades, acquired a private studio space on Lincoln Road to further expand his inspirational environment while simultaneously showcasing his works at local, national and international shows such as Art Basel.

Saturday, June 12 through Saturday, July 3, 2010
6:00 p.m. to midnight, and also by appointment at GIANNI@ArtByGianni.com.

Burgeoning Wynwood hotspot Cafeina is pleased to announce the 2010 U.S. artistic debut by Los Angeles artist GIANNI. The installation, titled QUEST, will showcase a collection of work in his signature style of abstract expressionism, a hypnotic vision of textures and vibrant colors contrasted by streaks of high gloss black. Cafeina will host a sneak preview of GIANNI’s work in its 1,000-square-foot art gallery on Friday, June 11 at 9 PM. GIANNI’s exhibition will officially open to the public during the Wynwood Art Walk on Saturday, June 12 and it will run through July 3, 2010.

Once his carefully selected pallet and mood is decided, GIANNI maneuvers these colors and controls their every movement and composition scrupulously. Time is of the essence as he tries to evoke his immediate feelings. He moves swiftly and uses gravity to his advantage. After having poured paint in precise locations and in conscientious amounts, GIANNI meticulously manipulates the canvas around with vigorous movement until the desired effect is achieved.

A modern day “Renaissance Man,” GIANNI experimented with various forms of artistic expression before discovering art. He began his journey in front of the camera lens at the age of sixteen as a model in Canada and later Europe, he would return to the U.S. to pursue acting before ultimately finding himself back in Los Angeles in front of a blank canvas.

GIANNI then embarked on a quest to discover what genuinely gave him a sense of accomplishment and found that the answer would lead him to the inspiration and title of his 2010 installation. During the last year, GIANNI took possession of an NY-style studio in the heart of Hollywood and has since focused all of his energy into creating a series of paintings that represent his voyage to art and self discovery. “This expeditious process has left me emotionally depleted, all that’s left is the physical manifestation of an immortalized ‘emotion’ and ‘moment’ in time,” says GIANNI.
For more information please visit www.ArtByGianni.com or contact GIANNI@ArtByGianni.com.

Welcome to Malice in Wonderland!

Ray Azcuy, Lu Coxhead, Luis Diaz and Yamel Molerio will surprise you with an array of artworks exploring familiar settings with a twist of malice. The artworks will explore the tragic and inevitable loss of childhood innocence, life as a meaningless puzzle, and death as a constant and underlying menace. All of the pieces have a dream like quality while dealing with diverse personal issues. The curious viewers may find themselves looking at confusing subject matter that they could simply regard as nonsense or approach the work and explore at a deeper level to discover the meaning beneath the layers of paint.

Cremata Gallery Annual Summer Exhibition Opening reception 6/11/10

Cremata Gallery’s “Annual Summer Exhibition”
Opening reception : June 11 – 7:30 pm – 10 pm
Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135
From June 1 through June 30, 2010
Regular hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00 – 6:00 pm and Mondays by appointment
Admission: Free

Cremata Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of their “Annual Summer Exhibition” featuring various artists from the gallery roster.
Some artists have been with the gallery since its inception, and others have joined us recently, like Enrique Toledo. The exhibition comprises 40 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures. This exposition does not attempt to follow a rigorous chronological or thematic order; instead, it prefers to emphasize an eclectic selection.
The exhibition includes the works of established masters, as well as mi-career and upcoming artists with a promising future. The result is something uniquely eclectic and entirely contrary to delimited chronologies and rigorous themes. The joy of the “Annual Summer Exhibition” always comes more from unexpected juxtapositions, not from the pairing of like with like, allowing the eye and imagination a rare freedom, not telling you what you ought to admire or notice.

On this occasion, Cremata Gallery will feature Cuban artist Enrique Toledo (Santa Clara, 1966), who inaugurates his first exhibition in Miami. Toledo, who has magnificent technical skill, has developed a prolific pictorial portfolio based on famous works in the history of art, which he then recontextualizes in the present adding everyday elements to them. To view his oeuvre, is to make a ludic journey through the paintings of Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Rafael Sanzio, among other masters. The personages in his paintings radiate an enigmatic magnetism, inviting the spectator to penetrate the work beyond mere contemplation. Enrique Toledo boasts a productive career with more than 40 expositions in his native Cuba, Mexico, Portugal and the United States.

Nicholas Payton concert South Florida Jazz Season Finale 6/12/10

Information from www.JazzBluesFlorida.com
Nicholas Payton concert
Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus
3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314.

South Florida JAZZ welcomes arguably the most important trumpet player in jazz, Grammy-winner NICHOLAS PAYTON who is making only his third excursion into the area. Mr. Payton performed in 1998 and 2000 for the organization at the Hollywood Jazz Festival.

South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is privileged to feature Mr. Payton and his band, as they come off a world tour. Payton is among the most influential artists in the modern jazz genre, and maintains his New Orleans feel and authenticity in the modern idiom. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students of any age with I.D.) and may be purchased from the Broward Center Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Web site.

Since 1994, when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with From This Moment, the trumpeter has been lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. Even though he started out as a “young lion,” heralded as one of the new-generation guardians of the hard bop flame, Mr. Payton consistently committed himself to discovering his voice outside of the strict confines of that rearview mirror approach to the music. It was early on that curve that he performed for South Florida JAZZ in 1998 and again in 2001, dazzling the audiences with his pure tone and soul. With his huge, burnished tone and full command of trumpet history from Satchmo through Freddie Hubbard, Mr. Payton has firmly established himself as one of the premier jazz artists of our time.

While his jazz journey has taken him down many roads – from heritage artist to electric experimenter – the 35-year-old trumpeter has arrived at a new plateau of jazz maturity. “As a musician, as an artist, you’re always trying to zero in on the bull’s-eye as a means of becoming a better version of yourself… The approach and the ideas of my music have become more singular, more cohesive. I had no agenda in terms of a specific genre or style, only to be true to who I am now.”

Born into a musical family and mentored by Ellis Marsalis at the University of New Orleans, Mr. Payton was well prepared to leap into the jazz fray when he emerged on the New York scene in the 1990s. He impressed Wynton Marsalis and was a regular in the early years of programming at Lincoln Center. Payton put his own spin on New Orleans-associated music. Over the next several years, Payton continued to hone his craft working with Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, and Ray Brown, and collected a Grammy with Doc Cheatham. In 2003 he boldly moved beyond the straight-ahead, mildly shocking the jazz world with his adventurous and exhilarating plugged-in band infused with elements of hip-hop, electronica, and effects-driven trumpeting.

This foray was transitory as he struggled with his role as torchbearer for the mainstream, fairly predictable, and somewhat stale jazz, while striving to carry on the experimentations of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Weather Report; even incorporating elements of R&B and soul. Mr. Payton says he is, “most solidly in a place where I’m coming to terms with who I am. I’ve weeded out those things that don’t feel right for me. I’m not out to try to impress and I’m not worried that what I play is going to upset some people. I want to write and play music that speaks for me and means something to me, that I feel passionate about.” He has found peace.

Grooves are central to his newest project. Mr. Payton states, “I want that dance element that was there at the roots of jazz. I feel a lot of jazz has gotten away from that legacy.” It is not a common sentiment, but not an invalid one, either.

Ken Ray and Dylan Kay will host the evening soiree; serving up a combined food, wine and mixology tasting that will include an open bar featuring The Local’s not-your-average-well drinks and a few of Dylan’s famous signature cocktails. Photographer Jeff Thomas Schuller will premiere and showcase his photomontage, “Big Easy,” a series of mood prints set in New Orleans that will display at The Local throughout June, and will commence the restaurant’s ongoing commitment and support of the local arts community.

Himself a long-time resident “local” of South Beach, owner Ken Ray wanted to bring back the kind of establishment where you could take it easy and enjoy a good drink and bite with friends and family in a setting that was relaxed and fun without the prices and pretenses of a typical South Beach hangout. A nod to the easy-going vibe of the 70’s, The Local blends the comfort and feel of a neighborhood bar with the selection and quality of an upscale lounge. At The Local you can come in and sit at the bar or pool to enjoy a tasty, fresh and inexpensive meal or a refreshing beer or cocktail while enjoying thoughtful service and the peace of mind you used to enjoy before life became so complicated.

The Charest-Weinberg Gallery is pleased to present Within an Arrows Range, an exhibition of new paintings by Pedro Barbeito. This will be the artist’s first solo show at the gallery following a remarkably successful two-person outing last year.
Pedro Barbeito came to prominence in the late 90s as the leader of a group of abstract painters challenging Modernism’s prevailing notion of terminal flatness through architectonic strategies of superimposition, lamination and tiling. For this new generation of painters, Modernism’s insistence on simplified order through a program of ever-increasing regimentation, measurement and precision in the hopes of revealing a sense of naked spiritual purity shorn of any “messy” figurative signifiers, had seemed to run its course. Much like a precarious, teetering Jenga toy, whose last geometric block has just been removed, abstract painting before the ubiquity of digital imaging technologies seemed about to collapse under the weight of its own empty, Greenbergian rhetoric. To set the record straight: Never before had Modernism’s innately reductive impulse been so strenuously challenged by a vanguard crew of painters raised on — and prone to — expressions of aggregation, accumulation, and density.
While today it seems as if every aspiring painter has at some point dabbled with Photoshop, satellite image-grabs, and 3D modeling programs (as well as the attendant editing programs used to tweak and manipulate them), it bears mentioning that a mere fifteen years ago, the notion of an abstract painting as an archive or repository of built-up, sedimentary layers was practically heretical. Had this been Salem circa the early 19th Century, Barbeito would certainly have been the first apostate to be burned at the stake. In hindsight, we now see that even his first conscious stabs at “exploding” the Modernist grid and gathering the resulting “shrapnel,” so to speak, were pioneering efforts to level the playing field between the assumed artificiality of the digital archive and the equally stereotypical presumption of the artist’s subconscious imaginary as the sole locus of authentic creativity.
But as Barbeito’s original generation has become fully historicized and the battle lines are drawn between a growing techno-aided Baroque on one hand, and the deep subjective interiority of a new generation of quasi-naïve, deskilled Abstract-Expressionists on the other, Barbeito himself has been actively dissolving these same boundaries between the figural and the abstract, the vaguely humanoid and the resolutely gestural on his own terms. Such divisions, he would argue, are handed down after the fact anyway by critics and cultural theorists alike, who are eager to demystify or perhaps hasten the obsolescence of what in the end cannot be demystified – that is to say, the artist’s own recombinant, ever-organic, insistently morphing attempts at creating a deeply personal, wholly unique visual language.
Though Barbeito would be the first to argue that the most elusive thing about painting itself is its application (and woefully inadequate approximation) of word to image, he nevertheless has found inspiration in this current show in the Greek, mythological figure of Scyllla, the once beautiful maiden transformed into a 12-tentacled, devouring monster by a jealous God. The comparison with painting’s own history is unavoidable here: a lush, otherworldly siren song that seduces and entraps even as it continues to puzzle and confound.
Since Barbeito well knows that technology and especially the consumer electronics industry are chiefly driven by capital accrued from pornography, he is interested in re-enchanting a sense of sublime wonder in the female form lost in the endless patriarchal objectification of your average downloaded streaming mpeg file. Pornography’s own compression of scale, flattening of image, extreme foreshortening, not to mention the sheer teeming jumble of limbs and tendency toward airbrushed, idealistic perfection is the kind of infantilizing wish-fulfillment that smacks of the artificial. In his own words, then, he describes his new paintings as a “merging of the painterly (pouring, splattering and brushing on paint), and the digital (acidic colors, faceted shapes, grids and pixels) to create a Frankenstein-like form of representation that critiques the notion of the very concept of the natural and the authentic as always already mediated by fiction and technology.”
Pedro Barbeito is a graduate of the Yale School of Art. Born in La Coruna, Spain in 1969, he now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been exhibited internationally and resides in important collections all over the world. This is his 10th solo exhibition overall.

YV AND BROTHER K write folk songs borne from their wanderings across the globe. Both are haunted by the sights, sounds and people who have become embedded in their music, producing a sound as varied as their backgrounds: stomping blues, reflective ballads, mariachi-gone-punk. Armed with guitars, spare strings, and dreams and visions, they’re setting out from their present homebase in New York City to conquer the Southeast this summer, bringing their musical lunacy to Luna Star Cafe on June 23. Pontunes Tiki Bar and Marina

On Saturday, June 5th The Coffee House Gypsies (award winning rock band from Miami who won nine Status QuO Live Music Awards in 2008) are coming to Key Largo for a four hour-long boat-side concert at Pontunes Tiki Bar and Marina which will last from 5:00 PM till 9:00 PM.

The Miami Herald and Miami New Times both compared The Coffee House Gypsies to the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and The Papas, calling them a “quintessential jam band” while music critics said things like “the music of the Coffee House Gypsies from the Southern tip of Florida is as magical as their name implies.” The band also won the 2009 award for “Best Pop Band” at the South Florida QOOL Shows Awards.

The Largo show on Saturday promises to feature songs from The Gypsies previous two LP releases, as well as some fan favorites from their latest album “The Artist.” The performance will also sport some new songs expected to be on the new upcoming CHG album, and there will surely be some of the typical gypsy-jamming and improvising on stage as well. The band also boasts a collection of 60 covers that they call pull from during the show. The show is admission free and all ages are welcome to attend.

During the concert Pontunes offers a free sunset cruise to anyone wanting to tour Largo aboard The Queen Anne’s Revenge II ship. Guests should call ahead to reserve their spot on the boat (305-451-0864) and arrive 90 minutes prior to sailing for sign-in.

The Coffee House Gypsies invite everyone to visit www.CoffeeHouseGypsies.com and download some FREE original music before the show. The website also features live videos and more.

Miami’s ‘Underground King’ Garcia is back for the free release of his third album Shattered Dreams, an album that purposely takes Garcia back to his Miami hip-hop roots of beats and rhymes. After the critical acclaim of his 2008 sophomore album Life Unscripted (which was executive produced by N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN and featured guest production by Midi Mafia, Reef, Diaz Brothers, DJ Honda, Omega One, Dani Kartel, Scram Jones, and more), Garcia and longtime producer-friend Mr. Fury went back to the lab and decided to record an album that was strictly ‘in the moment’ – free from thinking about radio, trends, blogs, etc. Consider Shattered Dreams a therapy session that we can all relate to.

Shattered Dreams – Executive Produced by DJ EFN and produced by Nick Fury HD with additional production by Hazardis Soundz (CNN, Triple C), Big Drain (CNN) and featuring Bern Biz (of ¡MAYDAY!) and Garcia’s cousin (which both of them make the group The Dysfunct) Adrianne (Of The Rescues).

Austin is one of the few cities on earth where nature, fashion, culture, the arts, music and urban sophistication merge so effortlessly. Our objective is to produce a fashion show, which promotes emerging designers, cutting edge style, evolving entertainment, while putting Austin on the international state. Our objective is to produce a fashion show, which promotes emerging designers, cutting edge style, evolving entertainment, while putting Austin on the international stage. This will be an opportunity for designers and attendees to network and get exposure to out-of-town figures as well. Equally important, we are supporting an animal charity, “Austin Pet’s Alive” which is a local organization that is working to make Austin a “No Kill” city.

During Austin’s Fashion Week, one of the most exciting events of the week will occur on Thursday, August 19th, 2010. This benefit event will be a remarkable evening with proceeds going to the charity, “Austin Pet’s Alive.” Bon Vivant LLC, and Jessica Rae Anderson will make over the Mexican American Cultural Center with an “In Flight” theme, for a night of fashion, DJ’s & live music, as well as great food and drink from local eateries. Models will grace the catwalk from Wilhelmina Brown.

Bon Vivant LLC, Nichole Wright, in Austin, Texas & Jessica Rae Anderson, Lifestyle Stylist, who is based in Miami, Florida, decided to host the “Fashion in Flight” for many reasons. Both women spent over ten years in New York City most recently and wanted to bring the excitement of a “true runway” Fashion Week to Austin and both have adopted dogs in the last year. “We really wanted to host a unique event that nurtures the design and fashion industry, gives participating brands international PR reach and supports an animal charity.”

By the end of 2007 his first solo album, Dimensions, recorded in Brazil, was released. This project incorporates his Afro-Cuban roots with strong influences of Jazz and Brazilian music. “I can assure you no other place in the world deserves my solo debut more. I really hope that everyone who in one way or another has followed and supported my music through all these years can enjoy this album and receive my sincere thanks through all my music.”

Marion Cowings at the Upstairs at Van Dyke 6/11-12/10

Jazz singer Marion Cowings Performs June 11 and 12 at Lincoln Road’s Upstairs at Van Dyke

World-renowned Jazz singer Marion Cowings will perform.
Upstairs at Van Dyke, 846 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139
Friday, June 11, 2010 and Saturday, June 12 from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Marion Cowings, world-renowned Jazz singer, is set to perform June 11 and 12 at Lincoln Road’s The Upstairs at Van Dyke. Cowings, a native New Yorker, is best known for his considerable range and smooth baritone voice. For decades he has been delighting audiences around the world including venues such as Blue Note, Village Vanguard, and Lincoln Center as well as many prestigious venues abroad. New York Times writer Jon Pareles once penned that Cowings sounded like a latter-day Frank Sinatra which may be attributed to his attendance at the now famous LaGuardia High School where he was chosen to perform as a solo vocalist with the New York Philharmonic. Cowings’ newest CD features performances with Hank Jones and Frank Weiss.

Upstairs at Van Dyke is a live music lounge and event space on the second floor of the historic Van Dyke Café overlooking Lincoln Road. Known for its warm and welcoming environment, the venue has made a name for itself by while playing host to the Jazz music tradition. The venue has also recently received a mention in Time Magazine’s Miami: 10 Things to Do in 24 Hours issue. The refurbished space boasts a full-service bar, state of the art sound system, grand piano and is staffed by an acoustic engineer. Live music can be heard at Upstairs at Van Dyke nightly from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Complete Fritz Lang Metropolis at Miami Beach Cinematheque 6/4-6/10

04 FRI, 05 SAT, 06 SUN 8pm:
An MBC Premiere «DIGITAL» Presentation!
In collaboration with Emerging Pictures
Miami Theatrical DIGITAL Premiere!
The Complete METROPOLIS
(Directed by Fritz Lang/1927/Germany/Restored 2009/147mins.)
With Brigitte Helm, Carl Frohlich, Fritz Rasp, Rudolf Klein-Rogge

From 1927 until the early 1980s, Metropolis was screened in a variety of versions and lengths, all of them derived from the general release prints cut by Paramount and UFA. In July 2008, it was announced that an essentially complete copy had been found — a 16mm dupe negative unearthed by the curator of the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine that was considerably longer than any existing print. It included not merely a few additional snippets, but 25 minutes of “lost” footage, about a fifth of the film, that had not been seen since its Berlin debut. The discovery of such a significant amount of material called for yet another restoration, spearheaded again by the Murnau Foundation and coordinated by their Film Restorer Anke Wilkening.
In Metropolis, a towering city of the future, society is divided into two classes: one of planners and management, who live high above the Earth in skyscrapers; and one of workers, who live and toil underground, slaves to the whistle of Metropolis’s ten-hour clock. Freder Fredersen, the only son of Metropolis’ ruler, lives a life of luxury. One day, he follows a beautiful girl down to the grim Lower City. . .
“The cumulative result is a version of “Metropolis” whose tone and focus have been changed. “It’s no longer a science-fiction film,” said Martin Koerber, a German film archivist and historian who supervised the latest restoration and the earlier one in 2001. “The balance of the story has been given back. It’s now a film that encompasses many genres, an epic about conflicts that are ages old.”-New York Times

A group show featuring personal work from prominent graphic designers who call South Florida home. In their roles as designers, these three artists, create on behalf of clients. As fine artists, on the other hand, they are beholden to no one but themselves.
Randy Burman
Steve Radzi
Tom Weinkle

It is said that for every decision made alternate realities are played out in countless other dimensions resulting in myriad variations of human providence. As many of the works in this exhibition point out, regardless of how long we have been learning, looking, and living, the railroad switch of our choice can appear without warning, diverging and diverting our paths. Sometimes, however, when individuals demonstrate multiple preferences, eventualities run parallel, neither dominant nor subordinate, but complementary. The exhibition Alternate Realities brings together three artists who share such a dichotomy.
As graphic designers they create on behalf of clients, often under duress. In their studios, however, free from the shackles of a lackluster, work-a-day week, Burman, Radzi and Weinkle employ vocational skills honed in the commercial world to less pressing, ultimately more rewarding ends.
For these creative professionals, basking at the impasse of fiscal necessity and artistic drive, the duality of their lives are the very means by which they live. Nevertheless, despite patent advantages that come from looking from the inside out, potential is something left to the individual to realize, regardless of standing and in spite of liberty.

Buy Mañana In Cuba: The Legacy of Castroism and Transitional Challenges for Cuba at Amazon

Title explores Cuban mindset and its relevancy for the nation’s future, providing creative solutions for a successful transition to democracy

Miami-based author, scholar and businessman Dr. José Azel will host a launch event for his new book Mañana in Cuba at Books & Books in Coral Gables on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. In this title, Dr. Azel offers a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Cuba with an incisive perspective of the Cuban mindset and its implications for Cuba’s future. Mañana in Cuba’s release is particularly timely given the topical nature of Cuba and U.S. relations today.

While the official event begins at 8:00 p.m., guests are invited to attend a pre-reception celebration at 7:00 p.m. in the bookstore’s Mediterranean-style courtyard, with small plates and wines courtesy of The Café at Books & Books. Immediately following the outdoor soirée, Dr. Azel will discuss concepts from Mañana in Cuba. A question and answer period will follow, during which time Dr. Azel will autograph copies of his book.

Divided into two parts, Mañana in Cuba begins with the exploration of the mindset Cubans have developed living under a totalitarian system. Here, Dr. Azel explores the historic, political and economic obstacles present in modern-day Cuba and introduces the framework he believes will most effectively facilitate a democratic civil society. Part two of Mañana in Cuba discusses practical policies to work with the current disposition of the Cuban nation and lead it to a prosperous future, while maintaining the society’s culture and history.

According to Dr. Azel, “A unique aspect of this book lies in the fact that it does not seek to unnaturally mend a decimated civil society, but rather, it offers policy approaches anchored on current Cuban ethos and society.” Mañana in Cuba focuses on the means that will facilitate the Cuban transition from totalitarianism and a centrally planned economy to liberal democracy and a free-market economic system. Ultimately, Dr. Azel asserts that the alternative visions presented for Cuba’s future should be met with immense consideration as one of them will inevitably crystallize into the sociopolitical and economic narrative of the country for generations to come.

Notably, 100 percent of the author proceeds from sales of Mañana in Cuba will benefit the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-America Studies at the University of Miami, where Dr. Azel is a Senior Scholar. For more information on Mañana in Cuba and its author, please visit the book’s publisher, Author House.

Nomade Gallery June Agenda

Nomade Gallery’s June Agenda
3133 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, FL 33133
Saturday June 5th , 2010 – Wednesday June 30th
2010 ARTISTS: Georges Bourgoignie, Catherine Bon, Charis Kirchheimer, Looi Long Lee, Tamara Sky, Aida Tejada, Pierre Traversat

Nomade Gallery is pleased to announce its June agenda of exhibits and artists, beginning on Saturday June 5th during Coconut Grove’s monthly gallery walk. Nomade Gallery is dedicating the month of June to the exploration of photography through both amateur and professional lenses. This month Nomade Gallery has chosen local Miami photographer Charis Kirchheimer as June’s Feature Artist. On Saturday June 19th , Nomade will also host an evening for the children of Big Brothers Big Sisters-Miami featuring over 50 photographs taken by the “Littles” themselves.

Charis Kirchheimer will showcase three series: “Zoophilia”, a daring black and white photographic collaboration with Tamara Sky that captures an ethereal bunny-being sauntering through a ghostly dimension; “Transience”, an engrossing pair of long exposure self-portrait photographs, both of which had their first gallery debut during May’s SIREN exhibit with artist Danny Catania; and the premiere debut of “Dirty Laundry”, documenting a lucid dream adventure in a 24-hour laundromat on a late winter’s night.

Charis is a Miami based photographer who began her photography career in early 2007. Her work was exhibited in two Art Basel showcases in 2009; she has also been featured and shot for Ocean Drive Magazine, The Miami New Times, 944 Magazine, Architectural Digest, Italian blog Camera Obscura and Missbehave Magazine

On Saturday June 19th , the “littles” of the youth mentoring program Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami will show over 50 photographs displaying their escapades throughout Miami. Ten cameras were donated to the “Little” brothers and sisters for them to use and document unseen facets of the city we all call home. These photographs will be available for purchase as a direct contribution to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami.

Nomade Gallery looks forward to following up the success of May’s Art Walk, an art affair that prompted the Miami New Times to dub Nomade’s May 1st show the “…highlight of [Coconut Grove’s] art walk…”. Nomade Gallery is Coconut Grove’s newest gallery on the block which was opened by esteemed French art enthusiast Brigitte Serfaty this past February. The first Saturday evening of every month, Coconut Grove’s galleries and shoppes put on a parade of local art, music and food open to the public.

Oracledang! Come kick off the summer with a special night of music inspired by the novel “Headz” by J.J. Colagrande. It’s a summer music festival based on a book based on a summer music festival. Weird, right?

The official lineup is sick. There’s basically three local headliners with iMayday!, Brendan O’hara, and Raffa and Rainer. You got some vets with Dyslexic Postcards, and the kick ass Radioboxer. Then you got some local up and comers like Askultura, Space Voodoo Crystals, and the glitchy Redundans.

Partners n’Grime will be holding down the fort upstairs in the black room.

The White Room has just been re-modeled to dope-ness. Everything is so fresh and so clean clean. New kick ass sound in the Red Room. You have to peep it. You also got some of the best painters in the city, Reinier Gamboa, Sergio Torres, and Ultra’s Official body painter Luis Valle, painting live so yeah. This show is one of the better local line ups in a minute + plus retail vending, food vending, and a few surprises too, come thru

Opening Reception Divine Debris and Glorious Trash at Miami Beach Botanical Garden 6/15/10

The Divine Debris & Glorious Trash Art Exhibit
The Opening Reception is on Tuesday, June 15th at 7 pm at Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
artworks will be on display throughout the week during Garden Hours of 9 to 5pm. Admission is free.

Trashy side of Miami Beach art community exposed!

Once again the quirky, edgy creativity of Miami artists shines in works of art made of, or based on trash, debris and found materials recycled into Divine Debris & Glorious Trash for the annual exhibit at Miami Beach Botanical Garden during the week of June 14 through 17.

For weeks prior to the deadline, Miami artists were sighted rummaging through trash barrels, cruising neighborhood streets on recycle days, emptying closets and garages, and finding form and beauty in things most people would consider trash. Broken shells, fallen palm fronds, rusty metals, old post cards, shattered mirrors, tattered fashions, beads, weeds and possibly even skeletal remains of unidentified critters will be transformed into two and three-dimensional juried artworks as photographs, paintings, graphics, fiber art, multi-media and sculpture creations.

All entries in the 2010 Divine Debris & Glorious Trash Art Exhibit will feature works that incorporate some aspect of, or relationship to, Miami Beach in conjunction with the Arts at St. John’s ongoing History of Miami Beach Project.

Arts at St Johns, Artshare LLC and Miami Beach Botanical Garden are co-sponsors and presenters of this 2nd annual Divine Debris & Glorious Trash Art Exhibit. Dr. Carol Hoffman-Guzman, Founding Director of Arts at St Johns and Paula Turk, Sculptor/Photographer and Founder of ArtShare LLC are co-curators of this exhibit.

For further information, visit Arts at St Johns online at: www.artsatstjohns.com or call 305.613.2325.

South Florida filmmaker screens P.A.T.H. at DocMiami Film Festival 5/29/10

I’d like to invite you to a screening of my award-winning documentary film “P.A.T.H.” @ the DocMiami International Film Festival at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa this Saturday, May 29th @ 1:20pm.

NOTE: Please rsvp to dan@danperezfilms.com. Thank you!

Fresh from winning “Best Florida Film” at the 2010 Sunscreen Film Festival (the award presented by none other than John Travolta himself!) “P.A.T.H.” the latest documentary film from award-winning South Florida filmmaker Dan Perez returns to Miami for a special screening at the DocMiami International Film Festival in Doral.

Watch Trailer here: http://www.vimeo.com/5499317

“P.A.T.H.” (which stands for Preserving, Archiving and Teaching Hip-Hop History) documents the P.A.T.H. Hip-Hop Academy, the first ever summer camp of it’s kind in Miami. During the four week camp, teenagers from ages 13-18 studied Hip-Hop history, the art of DJing, MCing (rapping), B-boying and B-girling (break-dancing), and urban art (graffiti).

Several of Miami’s most talented artists and performers served as instructors. The list included urban artist Krave, DJ Immortal from Scratch Academy, “B-Girl” Beta Rawkz and Soulflower who has shared the mic with emcees such as Erykah Badu, KRS-ONE and Outkast.

The camp also featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers. Hip-Hop pioneer Grandmaster Dee of Whodini, DJ Epps, popular Miami artist Lebo, Triple Seven, Faisal Tavernier of Urban America Newspaper, Mecca aka Grimo and International motivational speaker Kirk Nugent were just some of the names that took the time to stop in and address the students.

The film is suitable for all ages!

Earlier this year, he won second place in the Amstel Light Burger Bash national competition at the South Beach Food & Wine Festival, which was sponsored by the Food Network. And if that’s not enough, Miami’s very own Burger Beast will be one of three judges determining the winner. The Burger Beast (@burgerbeast) is South Florida’s renowned burger critic. Among the judges, Dori Zinn, Founder and President of the Fat Kids Club. Recently, Dori Zinn (@dorizinn) was choosen on South Florida Food & Wine “Blogger in the Spotlight” section as one of the hottest food blogs to follow.

The burger competition is only open to members of the Homemade Chefs Meetup Group. But joining the group is free. The event, however, is open to everybody. And guests are encouraged to bring a side dish to participate in the SIDE DISH & DESSERT COMPETITION. There will also be a DJ and prize drawings. RA Sushi Supports St. Jude 5/30-6/5/10

RA Sushi (Laura Buccellati swears it’s some of the best sushi in Miami) is hosting the 6th annual Nicky’s week. Nicky weeks features special items on the menu with 100% of the proceeds supporting St. Jude. Good sushi all while supporting a great cause-perfect combination.

Gus, Kelly, Mallea and I are planning our monthly 1st Friday, June 4th at the South Miami Nicky’s location. Please join us for an evening of good food, laughs (Mallea is a closet Jay Leno J) and sake (Gus has me hooked on Sake now J). If you’re unable to join us on the 4th, please stop by RA before June 5th and lend your support. After watching the Nicholas Mailliard video (link below), I hope like me, you’re inspired to tell a friend and ask them to tell a friend to support Nicky Week.

What a great way to kick-off summer! S & S (sushi and sake) on a Friday night for a cause that could help to make a difference in the life of child.

Hope to see you all there.
Don’t miss the sixth annual Nicky’s Week at RA Sushi

In memory of Nicholas “Nicky” Mailliard and his courageous fight against cancer.

About Nicky’s Week:
Rich Howland, one of the founders of RA Sushi, created Nicky’s Week to promote the research and treatment being done at St. Jude. The event is named in memory of Howland’s nephew, Nicky Mailliard, who was treated at St. Jude for ependymoma, a brain tumor.
When doctors discovered the tumor in December 2001, Nicky’s parents turned to St. Jude for their son’s treatment. The hospital was able to eradicate the tumor, but only for a short time. By September 2004, the cancer had returned, and was even more aggressive. In February 2005, at age 13, Nicky lost his battle.
“St. Jude played a critical role during Nicky’s illness by providing state-of-the-art care and by providing important information to our family. I want to help ensure that the programs at St. Jude remain available to any family that is forced to deal with the extreme heartache associated with the serious illness of a child,” Howland said.

St. Jude:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the premier pediatric cancer research center. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world.
St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.
During the past three years, 85.3 percent of every dollar received by St. Jude has gone to the current and future needs of the hospital.
Working together, our physicians and scientists have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent in 1962 to more than 70 percent today.
The survival rate for the most common form of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, has risen from just 4 percent in 1962 to 94 percent today.
