IV Inter-American Biennial of Video Art
The Biennial is organized by the Cultural Center of the Inter-American Development Bank, with the objective to stimulate the creative use of video, and encourage the Latin American and Caribbean artists to use their abilities to formulate original and imaginative proposals with the help of video technology. Second Prize of US$3,000 to the video “Les terra’s di nadie” (No-one’s Lands) by César Augusto Meneghetti from Brazil, which is a conceptual, dense and powerful piece conceived around social and political events that invade the current reality. Third Prize of US$2,000 to the video “Dos veces adiós” (Two Good-Byes) by Iván Nicolás Grum from Chile, a piece that takes advantage of film history to tell once again a love story that takes place anywhere on Earth. Immigrant’s List special screening of The Visitor at Colony Theatre 9/30/09

visitor
Immigrant’s List hosts a special screening of the Academy Award nominated film The Visitor, a compelling story about an American college professor and a young immigrant couple who grapple with the treatment of immigrants and the legal process in post- 9/11 America.
Please join us at The Colony Theater at 1040 Lincoln Road on Miami Beach on Wednesday, September 30 at 7pm.

Following the screening, you’re invited to participate in a panel discussion led by Miami immigration attorney Ira Kurzban, and featuring Marleine Bastien (Haitian Women of Miami), Cheryl Little (Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center) and Professor Irwin Stotzky (University of Miami Law School).
The screening is part of Immigrant’s List national campaign to raise awareness of the need for immediate and comprehensive immigration reform.
A suggested donation of $50 per person can be made here. (Please bring your printed receipt.) You can also make a donation by cash or check at the box office.
Even if you are unable to attend the screening, please consider making a donation to Immigrant’s List. We support pro-immigration candidates for office and work to defeat those who use fear and misinformation to promote an anti-immigrant agenda.
We believe that immigration is a fundamental part of America’s social, economic and political life. We believe that immigrants add tremendous value to our nation and to our heritage. We believe immigrants have and will continue to contribute to America’s growth and prosperity.
Click here to watch The Visitor trailer.
The screening is sponsored by Immigrants’ List, the bipartisan pro-immigration political action committee that supports pro-immigration candidates for Congress.

Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi Exhibition Event at the Consulate of Colombia in Coral Gables 10/2/09

Evite
image001 YaghoubiExhibit.RestrictiveTiesThatBind_lr YouCanTakeItWithYou
Visual artist Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi’s forthcoming exhibition, “Girl from Cali”, opens on Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Consulate of Colombia in Coral Gables.
Cecilia’s “assemblages” address social issues and culturally-relevant topics, but the use of discarded dolls and random, found objects in her work adds an interesting spin that is both diminutive and disturbing. It’s particularly ironic that her controversial pieces will be showing at a staunch government institution like the Colombian Consulate and are yet very accessible to the public – you don’t have to know art to get this..
Opening night on October 2 coincides with the monthly Coral Gables artwalk. Comp bites by Café Mamajuana and cocktails courtesy of Nuvo; event is free and open to the public.

Locust Projects Smash and Grab Fundraiser 11/6/09

LocustProjects_SaveTheDate2009
The Smash and Grab is always an effervescent night at Locust Projects and our most important source of revenue for the year. The proceeds provide important funding for exhibition programming, lectures, and special projects. I hope you will consider supporting the event this year.
How it works:
There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. By purchasing a ticket to the event, each attendee is entered in a raffle. Over one hundred emerging and established artists will donate artwork for the raffle — enough so that each attendee is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is fun way to place artwork into a collection, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.
Please find a list of donating artists below. We have great work this year and will preview the artworks for Locust Projects members on October 29th.

The COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES
They have been active in Miami’s music scene since 1997 and they have performed in New York City, Hollywood, Tampa, and all over South Florida. They were one of the headliners for the Tobacco Road 96 Anniversary Party and in 2008 they became the only band to-date to win nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards with nominations in ten categories.
After several limited-press LP and EP releases, The Coffee House Gypsies released a long awaited full-length album in 2008. The album was titled “The Artist” and featured 13 tracks of pop/rock fan favorites carefully laced between spoken word poetry bits. The release featured cameo appearances by other local Miami bands and artists and led reviewers and critics to say, “The music of the Coffee House Gypsies from the Southern tip of Florida is as magical as their name implies.” The album consists of all original compositions and one cover song: a version of Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence which Dirk Faes (of The Fleetwood Mac Legacy in Hoboken Belgium) called “his favorite version of the song ever.”
In 2009 South Florida’s Sun Sentinnel called the Miami band “a band of nomads who keep moving to different musical genres.” The Miami Herald said, “CHG’s sound is reminiscent of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and the Papas,” referring to them as “a quintessential jam band: they sometimes rock out with electric guitars and synthesizers or play mellow acoustic rhythms. Sometimes they even recite spoken word poetry between songs.”
The band now plays local venues regularly. Uva in Coral Gables and Sophie Moon showcases this band weekly all September-long as they prepare to release a new album in 2010. They are “a pop-rock-tinged acoustic folksy coffeehouse band” says Miami New Times, “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel”

http://www.youtube.com/CoffeeHouseGypsies

The BAILOUTS
A Miami-based band that is doing classic hits with a modern edge, The Bailouts rose from the ashes of bands like The VoodooCasters and Wednesday’s Child. They began turning heads in the local scene early 2009 when they began appearing in local venues and music festivals. Fronted by powerful, versatile and engaging vocalists, the band performs a variety of cover songs while infusing them with originality and all new twists. Their rich sound, tight harmonies, and high energy performances set them apart from most bands in the circuit.
Like CHG, this band is not just fronted by one gender or one voice. With a Natalie Merchant stage vibe and a voice like Kate Pierson from the B52s (or old-school Pat Benatar) the group’s front woman Annie electrifies the stage while Bailout male vocalist Tony (previously of “Naked Bootleg”) takes the mic for the occassional male perspective. Electric guitar riffs and synthesizer pads fill the audible plane with this band’s signature “Bailout” Bang.
“We do some back and forth,” Tony says about the male and female lead vocal roles in this new up and coming act, “We even sometimes duet on songs like ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’ by The Human League and ‘Stop Dragging My Heart Around’ by Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks. We sometimes even swap roles, like, I’ll sing ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ by Britney Spears and Annie might do ‘Just Like Heaven’ by The Cure.”
The band rocks out on stages all across Miami, gracing venues such as Tobacco Road, Poprox, Little Hoolie’s, and more. Most recently they performed alongside The CHG at the 2009 Music Festival: 80’s Flashback. Their repertoire takes the audience on a musical journey through time and space, engaging the audience with familiar favorites and beloved classics that are hard to not sing along with. They welcome new listeners to a musical experience that is like no other…

“Open since 1912, Tobacco Road is Miami’s oldest bar, surviving hurricanes, prohibition and going through a long list of presidents dating back to William Howard Taft. Even if you stop by not to have a drink, the place itself is a historic attraction. With a full liquor bar that’s open until 5AM seven days a week and a kitchen that opens till 4AM offering NY Strips and one of the best burgers in the city, the Road is a winner to any and all”
(from ClubPlanet.com)

“You can find live entertainment any night of the week at Tobacco Road. Claiming the title of Miami’s oldest bar, Tobacco Road has hosted great entertainers throughout its 95-year-plus history, including artists like George Clinton and Koko Taylor. The upstairs Cabaret was the local watering hole during Prohibition to gangster Al Capone and his associates”

In 1999 the Coffee House Gypsies released their first studio project: a limited-edition indie LP titled “In Tenement Halls” that made its way across Miami’s underground like a brushfire. The CD featured cover photography by Miami’s Lori Diaz and audio that included a pre-Artist version of Tigerlilly (which later was remixed and included in the 2008 CHG album, The Artist) The LP also included the alterna-rock-sounding old CHG song, “Fly Away” (with Floridian minstrel, Danny Salazar). Frances Gronlier of the band “Pretty On Paper” also made vocal cameos throughout the disk and Frank Perez (who sang the duet with CHG’s Albert Damian on the 2008 Album’s CHG Simon & Garfunkel cover of “The Sound of Silence”) sang on the CHG’s only recorded piano ballad to-date: a song written by Albert Damian titled, “Good Enough” which was only released on the rare “In Tenement Halls” release.

Smithsonian Magazine’s 5th Annual Museum Day at the Bass Museum 9/26/09

Smithsonian Magazine’s 5th Annual Museum Day
Saturday, September 26, 2009
On Saturday September 26, 2009, The Bass Museum of Art will participate in the fifth annual Museum Day, presented by Smithsonian magazine. A celebration of culture, learning and the dissemination of knowledge, Smithsonian’s Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine, and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, DC-based properties. Doors will be open free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors at museums and cultural institutions nationwide.
Last year, upwards of 200,000 people attended Museum Day, with all 50 states plus Puerto Rico represented by over 900 participating museums, including 84 Smithsonian affiliate museums. This year, the magazine expects to attract over 1,000 museums.
“An individual museum is not alone in its quest to integrate knowledge into people’s lives. Each museum is a small part of a universe of museums whose dialogues grow, and together expand an understanding and appreciation of culture, art, places, customs and/or animals. The Bass Museum of Art is proud to be a part of the fifth annual Museum Day and in Miami Beach, promote the understanding of art, historically and in the present.” states Silvia Karman Cubina, Executive Director of the Bass Museum.
On view in September at the Bass Museum of Art will be The Endless Renaissance, Tiny Stories [01], and Selections from the Collection.
Visit www.smithsonian.com/museumday to download your Museum Day Admission Card. Attendees must present the Museum Day Admission Card to gain free entry to participating institutions. Each card provides museum access for two people, and one admission card is permitted per household. Listings and links to participating museums can also be found at www.smithsonian.com/museumday.

Cold Stone Creamery Staging World’s Biggest Ice Cream Social, Thursday September 24
From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., participating locations will be handing out free 3oz samples of Jack’s Creation, in exchange for a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The ice creamery is also selling paper “wishes” for $1 during the whole of September. Around 85 per cent of all donations for the entire month will go to the cause, which helps unwell kids’ dreams come true (check out the heart-wrenching video on the website; I was blubbing within 30 seconds).
Jack’s Creation, by the way, is a yummy-sounding concoction–consisting of sweet cream ice cream mixed with brownie, sprinkles and caramel –devised by a five-year-old Make A Wish kid named Jack.

Dr. Karent Sierra Kick off party at River Lounge for Opens Sharing Smiles Foundation 9/24/09

DR. KARENT SIERRA OPENS NEW OFFICE IN CORAL GABLES AND LAUNCHES SHARING SMILES FOUNDATION

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” states the old adage or maybe beauty is the eye of Dr. Karent Sierra. “Dentist to the stars,” Dr. Sierra has recently opened her new cosmetic spa dentistry practice. Just steps away from the luxurious Merrick Park Mall she aims to redefine cosmetic dentistry as we know it. Dr. Sierra provides a spa-like atmosphere which will turn typically frightful dental experiences into soothing and relaxing visits. She firmly believes that creating “perfect” smiles for her patients changes their lives. Dr. Sierra has now partnered up with WFOR 4’s Marybel Rodriguez to create Sharing Smiles, a non for profit that will enable under privileged children to attain those same perfect smiles that Dr. Sierra creates for her celebrity clients.
The launch event for Sharing Smiles will kick off at
River Lounge located at 270 Biscayne Blvd Way, inside the Epic Hotel
Thursday, September 24th
7:00pm t0 10:00pm.
This spectacular event will feature music, cocktails, celebrities, and City Officials.
RSVP: DMACIAS@CREATIVASGROUP.COM. Confirmation required to attend this event.

The launch event for Sharing Smiles will be a spectacular affair. Dr. Karent Sierra, Marybel Rodriguez and guests will celebrate in style as the River Lounge boasts a fabulous view and spectacular décor. Guests can expect to sip on delicious cocktails provided by Bacardi while overlooking the view of the Miami River. Event goers will rub elbows with two time Grammy Winner Jon Secada, world renowned shoe designer Donald J. Pliner, and co hosts of Lifetime Televisions “The Balancing Act” Beth Troutman and Kristy Villa. For those who are wine lovers Monteripoli will be on hand to provide samplings of their fine wines and olive products. 2 Girls and a Cup Cake will also be on hand to provide their delicious creations to those with a sweet tooth. The launch event for Sharing Smiles will not only be a major social gathering but a major step towards helping those who are a little less fortunate.

Dr. Karent Sierra for lack of a better term found her “calling.” She feels Cosmetic Dentistry is about giving people back their long lost confidence through creating beautiful new smiles by design. Dr. Sierra is one person who knows beauty. The former beauty queen reigned as Miss Carnival Miami in 1992 and was a featured model on Latin TV working on various commercials, infomercials, and enjoying stints as a hand model. Dr. Sierra went on to study at Marquette University and earned her certification through the Las Vegas Institute which is regarded as the Mecca for cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Sierra specializes in full mouth extreme makeovers. The trust she has earned allows her a truly “fabulous” client following of some of Miami’s most recognized smiles including: Jon Secada, Thomas Kramer, Tom Daily, famed shoe designer Donald J. Pliner and his wife (also a shoe designer) Lisa Pliner. Dr. Sierra considers her practice a dental boutique offering first rate treatment, state of the art equipment and the luxuries expected at a spa. At her practice one is expected to have all five senses stimulated. Aromatherapy, soothing music, beautiful visuals, relaxing sensations, and even something to delight taste buds are all part of a patient visit.

The idea of a dental visit usually conjures up old memories of nervously sitting in a waiting room way past the appointment time only to be called into a very sterile, cold, and intimidating office. Dr Sierra has a different outlook in her practice. Imagine walking into an office where you are surrounded by warm colors while hearing the relaxing sounds of a tranquility fountain. This welcome is really only enjoyed by the patient and accompanying loved ones as Dr. Sierra’s office takes limited daily appointments to keep patients from waiting. Patients are brought into her office and are then made to dip their hands in warm paraffin wax while listening to soothing music to help keep the patient calm and relaxed. A 42 inch flat screen TV hangs in front of the dental chair which is really a leather spa massage chair and this point the patient will get the feeling that this is not a traditional dental visit. Giant X-ray machines are nonexistent in her office as she is way ahead of the curve by offering digital x-rays. No need to wear a lead vest or to even get out of your comfy spa chair. The normally intimidating dental tools that look straight out of a sci-fi movie are hidden out of sight. At this point Dr. Sierra works her magic.

Dr. Karent Sierra’s goal is to provide grade A cosmetic dentistry without the fear and intimidation factor but replacing those elements with service, pampering and a one-on-one hands on approach. At her practice it is of utmost importance that all her clients are treated like first class guests. It is with this vision that Dr. Karent Sierra has reached such heights in her profession. South Florida’s top professionals as well as recognizable “movers and shakers” will toast to Sharing Smiles and Karent Sierra Aesthetic Dentistry September 24th, 2009 from 7:00pm-10:00pm- join us as we say: “cheers.”

A Very Wolfsonian Weekend Celebrates South Florida’s Car Culture 11/13-15/09

A Very Wolfsonian Weekend Celebrates South Florida’s Car Culture
In keeping with the tradition of past Wolfsonian fundraisers, this year’s Very Wolfsonian Weekend, “An Affair On, In, and With the Motor Car,” on November 13-15, is anything but your typical fundraiser. The series of innovative events scheduled over the course of this three-day celebration of both car culture and museum founder Micky Wolfson’s seventieth birthday promise to prove illuminating and unusual, with a large dose of fun thrown into the mix.

The events, which take place in a variety of venues, are designed to foster intriguing connections with the museum’s interest in travel and transportation, providing new insights into ways in which the collection’s themes impact people’s daily lives.

“Our fundraising weekend this year ties into our Styled for the Road exhibition and offers a unique opportunity to celebrate and look at some very special elements of car culture in South Florida,” says Cathy Leff, director of The Wolfsonian. “This year’s events will be thought-provoking and expose participants to hidden gems in our community while providing a framework for people to examine the automobile’s role in American culture, past and present. And, to top it off, we’re celebrating our founder’s seventieth birthday!”

The weekend features four events:

• a lavish, behind-the-scenes reception at The Creative Workshop, a nationally acclaimed car restoration and customization firm where you’ll see exotic cars in all phases of reconstruction, including the workshop’s most famous car, the Sport Speciale

• a talk by renowned car designer Chris Bangle, the most influential living car designer and former chief of design at BMW, presented by The Wolfsonian and Braman Motors

• a birthday dinner for Micky Wolfson with a cocktail reception at the Bacardi Building Plaza sponsored by Bacardi, USA, followed by dinner in the Braman Motors Showroom, co-sponsored by Braman Motors

• a visit to two extraordinary automobile collections in South Florida, the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum and The Dauer Museum of Classic Cars—this event is free for members, so join now!

The funds raised support the museum’s exhibitions, education programs, publications, acquisitions, and other initiatives. For ticket information or membership information contact ian@thewolf.fiu.edu or 305.535.2631.

Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art presents Women In Photography Opening Reception 9/25/09

wolfgang
WOLFGANG ROTH & PARTNERS FINE ART Presents
WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY
HELMUT NEWTON BERT STERN NOBUYOSHI ARAKI DAVID LACHAPELLE
SEPTEMBER 26 – NOVEMBER 14, 2009
OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2009 / 7-10PM
Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art is pleased to present a Fine Art Photography exhibition that takes a look at the portrayal of women in the twentieth century through the eyes of four masters of the medium- Helmut Newton, Bert Stern, Nobuyoshi Araki, and David LaChapelle.
Helmut Newton cemented his reputation as an undisputed master of Fashion Photography with his documentation of the collections of Yves Saint Laurent in the1970’s. Since then the power and appeal of his images have enabled later photographers such as Steven Meisel, David LaChapelle, Michel Comte and Mario Testino to make the transition from Fashion Photography to Fine Art. On view are over 100 works both in color and characteristic black and white.
The exhibition’s centerpiece is comprised of Bert Stern’s “The Last Sitting” (1962), a strong collection of portraits featuring Marilyn Monroe. Considered Stern’s best-known work, these images were shot for Vogue just three months before the actress’ death. These works convey not only her iconic beauty but also a palpable sense of sadness. Nineteen transparencies from this series disappeared and were recently found. Aptly dubbed “The Lost Sitting,” these works have remained both unpublished and unavailable to the public until now. One of the most ironic and riveting photographs of this series portrays Monroe in a brunette wig posing as Jackie Kennedy.
Also featured is the erotic, at times at times controversial work of Nobuyoshi Araki. Araki’s photographs have earned the artist a respected place in both eastern and western cultures. This has earned him a variety of high profile commissions from artists such as Bjork, for whom he photographed the cover and inner sleeve pages of her 1997 remix album, Telegram. In addition to having published over 350 books, Araki is considered one of the most prolific artists ever. His works are held in numerous museum collections including the Tate and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Finally, the exhibition is completed with the work of David LaChapelle, featuring the work “Amanda as Liz”. This piece references many of the cultural icons and art influences of the 1960s pop art movement. LaChapelle recreates unique works with his own brand of creative techni-color flair.

Film premiere with Thom Yorke of Radiohead 9/21/09

On Monday, September 21, MoveOn members in the Miami area have a special opportunity to watch the one-night-only premiere of an important new film called The Age of Stupid.
The film is a powerful “docudrama” set in the year 2055, after global warming has done massive damage to humanity. Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite stars as a historian who “looks back” on real footage from 2008 to try to answer the question, “why didn’t we stop climate change while we had the chance?”
In addition to the movie, the theater will simulcast a Hollywood-style premiere event from New York City.
September 21, 2009
7:30 p.m.
South Beach Stadium 18
1120 Lincoln Rd
Miami Beach, FL, 33139
You can purchase advance tickets by clicking here:
http://www.moveon.org/r?r=55530
You’ll get so much more than just a great movie. The premiere event, simulcast live from a solar-powered tent in New York City to over 700 theaters in the U.S. and 50 other countries, will feature such celebrities as Gillian Anderson, Heather Graham, and Moby.
Also, MTV’s Gideon Yago will interview Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kofi Annan, environmental scientist James Hansen, and The Age of Stupid director Franny Armstrong. Ending the night will be a special, acoustic performance by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
The Age of Stupid was number one at the box office in the U.K. this spring, and this one-night event is poised to break the Guinness World Record for biggest simultaneous film screening. You can watch the trailer here: http://www.moveon.org/r?r=51921&id=17229-9306135-pDOul7x&t=1
Check out what critics are saying about this film:
“A captivating and constantly surprising film.”—George Monbiot, The Guardian1
“Think An Inconvenient Truth but with a personality.”—Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times2
“Political incompetence and inaction can usher in disaster… Rome is burning, and Franny Armstrong is fiddling the right tune.”—Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian3
The Age of Stupid looks us right in the eye and asks what kind of future we want for our kids. Be one of the first to see this important film and help spread the word so that as many Americans as possible hear its message. We hope to see you at the theater.

Miami Theatrical HD Premiere!
O’ Horten
(Written and directed by Bent Hamer/Norway/2008/ 90 mins.)
With Baard Owe, Espen Skjønberg, Githa Nørby, Bjørn Floberg

The moment the train leaves the station without engineer Odd Horten (Bard Owe) aboard, he realizes that the path ahead is a journey without printed timetables and well-known stations. Horten has been forced to retire after 40 years of traveling a very stable rail. His orderly, solitary existence is about to give way to a future of unlikely adventures and puzzling dilemmas. Proof positive that there is humor to be found in aging. O’HORTEN is Bent Hamer’s wonderfully skewed view of the human condition and gives us that somewhat absurdist vision with great warmth, a little melancholy and universal appeal.
In Norwegian with English subtitles.
WINNER: Flanders Int. Film Festival Best Director
“WARM, WHIMSICAL, WITH ITS OWN WAY OF LOOKING AT THE WORLD, “O’Horten” is a film made with impeccable delicacy and tact in all departments!”

Three major exhibition openings at the Frost 10/9/09

FIU’s The Frost Art Museum embraces Peace
Three exhibitions focusing on peace, impermanence, and the human condition

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama; En Vista, Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gómez and l a c u n a i n t e s t i m o n y, Navjot Altaf, three exhibitions promoting peace and focusing on the impermanence of life. Opening reception on October 9, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama, curated by Randy Rosenberg of Art Works for Change, the artists were asked to create works in honor of the Dalai Lama and as a result a collection of tapestries, photographs and paintings were created with multiple images, themes and media that mirrors the many roles the Dalai Lama plays within the world. The artists not only explore the Dalai Lama himself, but also discover and explore other multiple features of the leader. The exhibition includes work by Chuck Close, Laurie Anderson, Bill Viola, Jenny Holzer, Anish Kapoor, Richard Gere, Marina Abramovic, and Michele Oka Doner, among others. Each of these artists has a unique interpretation that will inspire, engage, and educate the viewers. The Dalai Lama is a global spiritual leader, temporal leader, and a Buddhist who has demonstrated a path to peace. The exhibition will broaden the appreciation for the Dalai Lama and all the principles and qualities he embodies. The Missing Peace is funded in part by Funding Arts Network and The Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Foundation.
En Vista, a new exhibition by the husband and wife team of photographers Eduardo del Valle & Mirta Gómez takes us on a rare and astonishing journey into the transformation of the human form after death. In the rural cemeteries of Yucatán, Mexico the dead are not normally embalmed before burial. Typically, the remains are unearthed after three years in the ground and transferred to an ossuary or makeshift container for all eternity and for all to view. En Vista offers a strikingly beautiful and memorable selection of 17 chromogenic photographs, printed by the artists from original negatives. The exhibition opens with an insightful excerpt from The Labyrinth of Solitude by Octavio Paz. Their recent photographs are part of the Florida Artists Series and faculty exhibition of the Art and Art History Department at FIU.
Continuing the journey into the human condition is celebrated Indian artist Navjot Altaf who uses photography and videos in her installation l a c u n a i n t e s t i m o n y in an attempt to listen to the testimonies of those affected in communal riots in India’s Gujarat State in 2002. Her video raises questions about whether one can enumerate and describe often opaque and confounding events and how events in India are relevant to violence and oppression throughout the world. Navjot Altaf’s video installations reflect her interest in a broad range of art media, societal issues and social unrest. She lives and works in Mumbai, India.

The larger works of Richard Strauss, from tone poems to operas, are well known and loved, but his chamber works are just as magnificent yet much more obscure. City of Hialeah’s annual Literacy Fair 9/19/09

MOUNTING COVER FINAL_RED2
Lirteracy-Fair-2009
Come and Join us for The City of Hialeah’s annual Literacy Fair. Bring the family for an afternoon of fun Saturday Sept 19th 11:am-3pm at JFK Library. Enjoy exhibit booths, live entertainment, bounce houses, readings by international authors and a special presentations by Mayor Robaina and Councilwoman Cue, who will launch their new children’s book “When I Grow Up”. They will read to a special group of library students and sign copies of their new release at 11:30 am in the Children’s Corner.

Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina and Councilwoman Katharine Cue are very excited to present the launch of their very own children’s book, “When I Grow Up” The book for elementary school kids, encourages children to become positive role models, promotes community involvement and caring about our planet and others. The City of Hialeah Literacy Fair and a special group of young invited guest will be the back drop to the event that will host a book reading and signing by the authors of the new release. Mayor Robaina and Councilwoman Cue will be joined by other well known authors such as poet Manuel Vazquez Portal and childrens author Lucia Gonzalez.

Mayor Robaina and Councilwoman Cue were heart set on keeping the book in Hialeah and supporting local businesses, so they choose AC Graphics and Dobbs and Brodeur both Hialeah companies and supporters of their Green Initiatives. “With the combined efforts of these two companies we were able to meet our goal of making the book with as many green initiatives as possible”, stated Mayor Robaina.

The book was completely made with paper from sustainable well managed forest, printed with vegetable inks and both the front and back cover are from recycled particle board and bound with water soluble glue. .

AC Graphics is a certified green partner and encouraged the green initiatives that are now used in all the city of Hialeah departments. Dobbs and Brodeur Bookbinders is one of the last hard cover bookbinders in South Florida and a staple of Hialeah for 60 years. At age 19, the present owner Luis Lloret, held his first part time job there and in 1985 at age 45 became the owner. The company has helped put all seven of Luis’s children through school. The family establishment was the place where the kids would come and do odd jobs after school. Now the second generation of Lloret’s will be taking over the family business. Anthony, Jorge and Edward Lloret are presently running the daily operations as dad looks on.

Mayor Robaina and Councilwoman Cue know the challenges that our local schools are currently faced with and have pledged to help however they can. They embarked on this crusade a year ago, as part of the Mayor’s Educational Initiatives and decided that all proceeds from the sale of the book would go to support this cause that help students in the City of Hialeah.

SEPHARDIC MUSIC – Romantic Songs of Spanish Jews
Montserrat Franco, Soprano
Claude Kadoch, Guitar & Darhukka
Free & Open to the Public

For centuries, the legacy and traditions of Sepharad (Spain in Hebrew) was transmitted through generations of Sephardic Jews on their Diaspora after they were ousted of Spain in 1492 and settled in several parts of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They left Spain but never their language “Djudeo-Espanyol” also called “Ladino” (a language which defer from the Spanish or Castillan spoken by Christians at that time and which includes Hebrew elements and vocabulary from the local languages) neither the culture which includes an amazing oral tradition : tales, poems and songs or “Romanceros” just as the “Trovadours” will perform in the Middle Age.

The vast collection of Romances preserved and transmitted for generations will come back to life on September 27th when Singer “Montserrat Franco” will present in an unique venue accompanied by the Israeli Moroccan Artist Claude Kadoch. These songs express not only these historical changes but also the entire life-cycle of that people, with their moments of joy, sorrow and love, its festivities and celebrations. This rich and varied culture is the basis of the Ladino repertoire, a musical treasure that never ceased to grow in the new places where the Sephardic Jews settled.

About the Artist: Montserrat Franco, a graduated Vocal Professor, ethnomusicologist and grantee of several scholarships by the European Parliament in Madrid, Spain and the State of Israel researched about the Sephardic Romances and Traditions from 1999 to 2002.

She was commissioned by the State of Israel to perform around the world as a truly sephardic artist during International Literature Fairs and Symposiums of the Spanish Language always sponsored by the AECI (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation)

SEXPLORATION is a show that takes the audience to a sensorial ride thought the channels of passion, emotions and thoughts that plunge right into the spectator bloodstream at once.
The right combination between skin, mind and pulsations, provides the spectator visual clues for their internal deepest orgasms’ mazes and pressure balance to their body heat.
Through their canvas, colors, angles and body, the interaction between these two artists enriches every second by all the artist pieces pulsations together, defining a new vocabulary word for passion: SEXPLORATION. Carla Fache and RE Sanchez bring to the Floridians an intelligent art show, with sensitiveness, high conceptual technical qualities and deep color passion that contributes to the balance of our soul and body flow, just feel it pumping…!

Carla Fache was born in Santiago, Chile, on May 14,1977. Residing in Miami, Fl since 2001. Since the age of four, her drawings reflected her creative mind, signaling her out from the rest of her peers. During her adolescence, her imagination exploded into a world of creativity, displayed onto the canvas. She translates her innate and original talent, through her strengths and passions, using her favorite color “RED”. Her mission is to allow the spectator to tap into his/her own imagination and exercise his/her freedom of thought and expression through his/her own interpretation. Carla Fache – Chilean artist whose works are an extension of her senses, flooded with sensuality and vibration. Her work is inspiring; the art simply pours emotions. She is a modern art expressionist whose appeal has crossed all boundaries and borders leaving only expectations as her greatest adversary. The World is her canvas; the road is her paint.

R. E. SANCHEZ is a Miami-based artist whose work has been exhibited regularly in non-profit organizations and gallery venues. He is a Salvadoran expatriate who in 1989 relocated to the U.S. to pursue his passion for art. Since 1994 he has participated in solo and numerous group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work can be found in many private collections. R. E. SANCHEZ’s work offers cultural commentary on the personal, social and political events of the human experience. Visual activism, deconstruction, reconstruction, cynicism and satire are the five themes of primary focus in my most recent endeavors. The artworks that emerge from these themes primarily intend to mesmerize and engage the audience.

Fache Arts & Amy Alonso Gallery in Miami is dedicated to exhibiting Abstract art by CARLA FACHE as well as national & international artist. focuses on modern and contemporary artists from Latin America, North America and Europe. Argentina is a major center for Latin American art where artists thrive, particularly in the vibrant and active cultural milieu of Buenos Aires, but also in the provincial capitals. Known and appreciated around the world, Argentine artists of the twentieth century have consistently absorbed global artistic trends without losing their national identity.

Cremata Gallery is pleased to present Argentine Visions: from Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics, an exhibition featuring an exciting collection of acrylics, oils, collages, inks, and watercolors, from the fifties to today. From Italo-Argentine Modernist masters Bruno Venier and Carlo Monzani, who has exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, to contemporary artists living in Argentina, Cremata Gallery is showcasing 17 artists with very different styles. Like U. S. art, Argentine art has a strong flavor of the melting pot, that has lately been turning from European influences to its native resources. Many of the paintings and water colors in the show were inspired by the École de Paris, from staid academic works to surrealism. Others are more indigenous.

Join us for this awaited show and enjoy Malbec wines, Argentine hors d’oeuvres and a special Tango performance by Claudio y Yanira, who teach Tango at the Alliance Francaise of Miami every Monday evening.

WHIRL CRASH GO!
Open Saturday, September 12th, 7-10pm
In conjunction with Wynwood and Design District Art Walk
Through October 17, 2009
Final_TMSisters
Locust Projects is pleased to announce the opening of the 2008 Hilger Artist Project Award Exhibition, the TM Sisters’ WHIRL CRASH GO!
On July 15th, the Miami-based collaborative will begin their 6-week transformation of Locust Projects’ space for a site-specific performance and exhibition on Saturday, August 29th and October 10th.

In their most ambitious performance to date, the TM Sisters will present a novel production including their personal athletic skills in synchronized swimming and roller skating. There will be moments of clashing and combination of cultures, animated video projections, and vivid Miami spirit. They are collaborating with audio composer Otto Von Schirach, designer Karelle Levy of Krelwear, and a supporting crew of performers. The TM Sisters’ epic piece will culminate into a kaleidoscope event of light, sound, and action.

Monica Lopez De Victoria, 28, and Tasha Lopez De Victoria, 26, grew up in Miami and collaborate under the name TM Sisters. They work in the media of video, digital video performance, VJing, collage, social experiments, zines, clothing, installations, and interactive video created along with their brother Samuel. Their do-it-yourself ethic began with their being home-schooled together by their parents. Their upbringing included frequent discussions regarding spirituality, psychology, behavior, relationships, creativity, and truth. The sisters’ work has been included in the international exhibitions “Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium,” curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Daniel Birnbaum, and Gunnar B. Kvaran; the Second Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art; and “PERFORMA 07.” Recent exhibitions include “(((sparks))),” Hedreen Gallery at Seattle University, Seattle, WA and “IDEALTONIGHT,” Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL.

This is the second year that Austrian-based dealer and private collector Prof. Ernst Hilger has teamed up with Locust Projects to support emerging artists. The TM Sisters were selected to receive a $2,000 cash prize and the opportunity to create a seminal work within the Locust Projects’ space.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs; and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Special thanks to Ernst Hilger; Karelle Levy of Krelwear and Otto Von Schirach. Photo: Justin Broadbent. Design: Venture Architects.

Locust Projects hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon – 5:00 p.m.

This exhibition will remain on view for the Wynwood and Design District Art Walk on September 12th and October 10th, 7-10pm.

WHIRL CRASH GO! will be performed again October 10, 2009 at 8pm

Locust Projects is an alternative, not-for-profit, Miami-based exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas and methods without the pressures of gallery sales or other limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Artists are encouraged to create site-specific installations as an extension of their representative work and are provided a residence to live while working, offering them a vibrant Miami experience to develop their ideas and methods. Locust Projects is committed to offering an approachable and inviting venue for the Miami and international art community to experience the work and meet the artists.

Betty & More at A Taste of Out in the Tropics 11/7/09

BETTY & More at “A Taste of Out in the Tropics”
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Performing Arts Showcase Sleepless Night at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre, November 7, 2009

Gender-bending, great music, lots of laughs and some powerful takes on history and sexual identity are all part of the upcoming A Taste of Out in the Tropics Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) performing arts showcase. It begins at 10:00 pm and continues on past midnight on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road. A Taste of Out in the Tropics is part of the annual Sleepless Night event, a vibrant free indoor and outdoor cultural festival spread out over multiple locations throughout Miami Beach on the 13-hour night that marks the end of Daylight Savings Time. A Taste of Out in the Tropics is a presentation of Robert Rosenberg/Tropical Wave Productions, in association with FUNDarte and MiamiARTzine.com, with the support of the City of Miami Beach and other funders.

A Taste of Out in the Tropics’ featured performer is the women-led pop-rock group BETTY, whose hilarious and always fresh musical performances and theater work has made them popular worldwide. They are well known for their music for the groundbreaking Showtime lesbian series The L Word, including the racy theme song, as well as their Off-Broadway show BETTY Rules. Lily Tomlin has said they are “so joyously captivating, you’ll ovulate” and Gloria Steinem has commented that they “sing with heart, humor….and attitude.” BETTY will perform a full concert to close the evening.

A great line-up of local GLBT artists will open A Taste of Out in the Tropics with brief sets from 10:00 to 11:30 pm. The M.C. for the night will be Adora, South Florida’s infamous gender illusionist known for his spot-on comedy and lip-synching in both English and Spanish. Juan Carlos Zaldivar will appear in his Martí and I, a mixed-media piece that blends video and live performance. Drag It Out will present their female-to-male “drag king” show that is sure to entertain audience members of all persuasions. And finally, the evening will be rounded out with a performance from an ensemble of the always-popular Miami Gay Men’s Chorus.

A Taste of Out in the Tropics is a preview of what will be South Florida’s first full-fledged gay contemporary performing arts festival, Out in the Tropics, coming to Miami in July 2010. The festival will present award-winning, cutting-edge GLBT performing artists from around the country who address broad gender and social issues, for an extended weekend of shows and other events. “We are so excited to launch this new Out in the Tropics project by participating in Sleepless Night this year, “ says Out in the Tropics Artistic Director Robert Rosenberg. “Our intent is to create a gay and lesbian signature event that can have both a local and national profile while exposing South Florida audiences to new and exciting work that rarely if ever gets presented in the region.”

Admission to A Taste of Out in the Tropics is free, with no reservations required, as is the case for all Sleepless Night events. For more information visit www.fundarte.us and www.sleeplessnight.org or contact robert@tropicalwavemiami.com.

Robert Rosenberg, whose Tropical Wave Productions is presenting A Taste of Out in the Tropics, is the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker of the classic gay documentary “Before Stonewall;” was the Founding Director of the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival; and has worked in many capacities in presenting live performance in South Florida. A Taste of Out in the Tropics is presented in association with FUNDarte, a multidisciplinary non-profit organization dedicated to producing, presenting, and promoting music, theater, dance, film and visual arts that speak to Miami’s diverse cultures, with a special emphasis on artists from Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain; and MiamiARTzine.com, a biweekly online magazine that showcases the diverse events and activities of South Florida’s cultural organizations and individual artists.

A Taste of Out in the Tropics project and organizational support comes in part from the City of Miami Beach Cultural Affairs Program, Cultural Arts Council; Glassworks Multimedia; Mega TV; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; and the Southern Arts Federation (SAF) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council.

Flying was a dream and an obsession for centuries until the airplane was invented. Although now we are able to fly assisted by mechanical devices, we still look at birds in a mix of wonder and envy. As a result, wings are seen as the means of transforming, and flying as the ultimate metaphor for freedom, the image of total liberation. In art history there any many examples of artists who have been inspired by the act of flying and as a consequence reflected it on their works.

Here we have two contemporary Cuban artists whose works are connected to this idea: Gustavo is using it as a resource for his paintings and Carlos is more interested in the actual possibility of flying, translating this interest to his sculptures.

The Great Systems – Gustavo Acosta
The idea of being constantly watched drove him to paint what seem like views seen through night vision goggles. These images looked like they were made by somebody who went around while everybody was sleeping and registered what he saw. While experimenting in this direction Gustavo started to play with the color green and the infinite possibilities that it offered. This led him to use the color as a filter, as if he was permanently looking at his surroundings through a green glass. The result is this group of paintings in which he has ‘softened’ the color in a more even tone, getting farther away from the goggles effect and giving the impression of an image captured when the light had a rare diffusion.

Secret codes
In this series of works Gustavo is exploring night views in which he shows us how cities are mapped out by their lights reflected against the dark background of a starry night, almost like electric Nazca lines. There is a sense of abstraction with pure color points made of light dots, the pitch black background emphasizing the emptiness between the ground and the air.

Flights of Fancy – Carlos González’s sculptures
In this new group of sculptures Carlos González continues exploring the natural world yet with a clear departure from his last solo exhibition a couple of years ago. His hard angular forms have dissipated, giving space to more organic and voluptuous pieces. While the previous works reminded us of insects, these new ones are inspired by birds and connected elements such as seeds and flowers. Carlos keeps looking at nature for inspiration and these pieces are his very personal interpretations of it. Seemingly mimicking wings and plants he is bringing to light the overlapping of nature, science and flying devices that seem ready to take off. While the works look like mechanical artifacts, there is still the poetry of nature. The monumentality of his work is balanced by the delicacy and intricacy of each piece, part of a complicated yet delicate oeuvre.

A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki

(Directed by Louis Price/UK/2009/55min)
Produced by Thomas Walters & James Collie
Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960s and 70s. BIBA would leave an indelible mark on the minds and wardrobes of the customers who ventured through its doors. Following its closure in 1975, many have attempted to reproduce the magic. All have missed the key ingredient: the involvement of its creator, Barbara Hulanicki. The legendary career of Barbara entered a new phase in 1987, when she completely reinventing herself as an interior designer in Miami. Hulanicki was at the forefront of the regeneration of Miami Beach, collaborating with Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Barbara Hulanicki is now respected across the world as a major figure in design.
Barbara Hulanicki and producer James Collie will be present for introduction and Q&A after the film on Friday, with a reception to follow. Come celebrate with us!

Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space at Charest-Weinberg Gallery 9/12/09

center_image
Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space
Bhakti Baxter, Nicolas Lobo, Gean Moreno, Daniel Newman, Ernesto Oroza, and Gavin Perry will be featured in the exhibition, Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space, at Charest-Weinberg Gallery, from September 12 through October 5, 2009. The opening reception will be on September 12 from 6pm to 9 pm at 250 NW 23rd Street, Space 408, Miami, FL 33127.
The exhibition is comprised of two different exhibitions that have been superimposed without any attempt to make them cohere. Two sets of information have simply been brought together, and the resulting form of the exhibition will be determined by the very dynamics of their interaction.
The first exhibition, Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky, is made up of black or nearly-black paintings by Bhakti Baxter, Daniel Newman and Gavin Perry. In the work of all these painters, the black monochrome is entwined with references that belong in cultural spheres that exist far away from formalist concerns. In Baxter’s case, the black paintings double as images of macroscopic phenomena and have a scientific flavor. In Perry’s work, the black monochrome is literally the high-end side of paintings that also trade in lowbrow referents and objects, like cheap rugs and souped up cars. With Newman, the black glaze is all process. He has covered over 200 found paintings with black, turning a gesture characteristic of iconophobia into a delirious flow of production. In a sense, in the work of all these painters, two sets of information are already blended. Each of their works becomes a stand-in for the overall structure of a double-exhibition with incompatible or competing halves.
The second exhibition, Outer Space, titled after a 1999 short film by Peter Tscherkassky, will be made up of sculptural proposals by Nicolas Lobo and Giancarlo Sardone, and Ernesto Oroza and Gean Moreno. Each of these collaborative projects begins with elements provided by the technologies, conventions and infrastructure that form the invisible materiality of our social space. Working through all the engineering problems and ontological recoding that rendering a virtual artifact in actual space brings, Lobo has collaborated with terrazzo mason Sardone to produce a real-life double of a standard bench that can be found ready-made in the design program SketchUp. As the bench took shape, its proportions began to feel slightly off due to some distortion caused by the SketchUp rendering engine. What looked like a perfectly bland bench on screen takes on an uncanny air in our physical space. Oroza and Moreno will use the tabloid, of the sort found throughout the city’s neighborhoods, to create both a “catalog” and an ornamental wallpaper pattern from forms determined by the exhibition itself that will, in turn, activate the supposed neutral walls of the space.
All of the artists in the exhibition are part of Miami’s burgeoning scene. They have all exhibited their work internationally and are represented in the collections of major museums. This will be the first time their work is shown at Charest-Weinberg Gallery, whose reputation continues to grow as Miami’s premier venue for emerging art.

Horacio Sapere Vickie Pierre Carlos de Villasante at Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts 9/12/09

HORACIO SAPERE VICKIE PIERRE CARLOS DE VILLASANTE
Alternate Combinations You Poor, Sweet, Innocent Thing Short Form

HORACIO SAPERE
Alternate Combinations builds on the implication of a long-standing body of work connecting the many threads of this thoughtful painter’s work. While predominantly known as a painter, Sapere has always brought a conceptual approach to the media. He has further worked beyond the confines of the media with sculpture and installation, specifically in the Poet’s Room series, which is an ongoing and somehow never completed project in constant evolution. His engagement in ideas established the field of painting and more spatial modes of representation within the parameters of modes of thought and representation. So for Sapere the act of painting, like the act of writing, is situated within the field of thought and should be understood as a form of thought. In his own terms, painting, like sculpture, can be a form of ‘visual poetry’. – William Jeffett
Horacio Sapere was born Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work has been exhibited widely in Europe, as well as Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Korea, Uruguay, Venezuela, the United States. He currently lives and works in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

VICKIE PIERRE
“Within my paintings and drawings, rubber stamp imprints of fictional female icons are converted into a world where the line between abstraction and representation is blurred. The works are primarily comprised of the dresses of the “three graces” of the fairy tale animation world: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. The repetitive applications and manipulation of the stamped images into clusters and groupings, along with occasional handwritten text, have become the basis of a connective network that alludes to identity, order, sensuality and feminine psychology. The repeated application of these icons also mirrors their mass-produced presence in popular culture. I am drawn to these characters; their underlying themes and their symbolic significance. In appropriating these images and in turn reconfiguring them, I am attempting to create a new meaning (or story). They are now faceless totems, deities, icons of a different caliber that are self-assured, indulgent and independent. These deconstructed and distorted shapes become otherworldly characters with sensual and precious personalities. They are self-contained and self-generating, recalling the abstractions and distortions of flora as well as the human body.”
Vickie Pierre is a Haitian-American artist born in Brooklyn, New York. She received a BFA in Studio Arts from the School of Visual Arts. Pierre relocated to Miami in 1999 and has participated in numerous exhibitions. In 2004, she participated in Transitory Patterns: Florida Women Artists at The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Her paintings and works on paper have been exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, among other fairs. Collections include the Progressive Art Collection, Cleveland, OH; Millennium Partners Collection of Contemporary Art, The Four Seasons, Miami, FL; and ALFA – Wasserman Collection, Bologna, Italy.

CARLOS DE VILLASANTE – Project Room
“In theatre, Short Form follows an improvisational spontaneous format. My paintings likewise follow intuitive suggestions, accidents and interventions. I use automatic mark-making to oppose precise graphic representation in my portraits. I then rely on my sensibilities to suggest which next step to take, much like in theatre when the audience’s suggestions guide the performance.”
Carlos de Villasante was born in Mexico City and lives in Sonoma, California, where he is on the painting faculty at Sonoma State University. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He exhibits his work both in the United States and abroad.
Carlos has taught numerous courses in studio art as well as liberal arts both in MFA and BFA degree programs. He began as a teaching assistant at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991 and has also taught the Memphis College of Art; the University of Mississippi, Oxford, and New World School of the Arts in Miami. He lived in Miami for several years and was part of the full-time faculty at Miami international University of Art and Design. Carlos is included in the recent book, Miami Contemporary Artists, by Paul Clemence and Julie Davidow.

ARTOCONECTO, THE DYNAMIC MIAMI ARTS NON-PROFIT, PRESENTS:
KIDSART: The Art Show! With a Special LIVE performance by Oscar Fuentes and Friends at 7:30PM!
The kids worked hard creating their projects for five weeks and now they are ready for their Opening Night! Come see their work at Wynwood’s Second Saturday Art Walk!
On Saturday mornings this summer, KIDSART brought a group of kids right into the studios of five notable Miami artists. Each week, a different artist led the kids in a workshop they created based on community-oriented themes, like sustainable art, recycling, or diversity. The kids learned the importance of having art and creativity in their lives, and got to know artists, and each other, in a very personal way. Working on arts projects together, and then sitting down to lunch to discuss their work, brought them a new, and bold perspective on art in Miami, and in their lives. Come see their collaborative creations, and get a glimpse of the artists’ work as well!
Where: Damien B. Contemporary Art Center

Review – People’s BBQ Restaurant

{I know we rarely do reviews, but we just tried out a place that is really good that many people might miss, so we wanted to give them a shout out. The below is entirely the opinion of Soul Of Miami. And if this place doesn’t have soul, no place does!}

I know many of us have talked about this place. So, we finally got in the car and went to People’s BBQ. That’s the one just off I-95, on NW 8th St and 3rd Ave. It took us a while to make it by because it is not really convenient to any of the areas of town we normally hang out in, so we had to make a special trip.

Well, it is very good! Very down home style BBQ, with Souse and everything like that. Between the three of us, we got the ribs, the baked ham, and the sliced beef. Sides were mac & cheese, green beans, candied yams, mashed potatoes, and ocra. All of them were really good, but the candied yams were insane.

It is a funny little place, looks kind of like an old converted Dairy Queen, very plain on the inside. Obviously old, but clean and well-kept. There were not many people doing dine in when we were there, but the take out counter was constantly busy.

Oh, we also tried the Souse. Now, if you can get over your cultural bias, it was very good, very flavorful.

The BBQ sauce they use is different than others I have tasted. I think it might be a bit mustardy, or something. Very good, in any case.

The prices are cheap, you can get a full dinner with sides for $9-$11.

Definitely a place I would put on my list of “six places to take Anthony Boudain in Miami.” Highly recommended.

Performing Live: Termanology, Garcia, Saheed, LMS, Pages (The Out of Hand Band), Bez (Psyko South), A1phaNum3ric5, Lex One
DJs: Heron & Kane
Host: Cynic
Massachusetts born rapper Termanology quickly rose from underground obscurity to working with some of hiphop’s elite producers, particularly DJ Premier. Growing up in the streets of the predominantly Latino city of Lawrence, MA, informed the halfwhite, halfPuerto Rican MC’s lyrics as he graduated from silly freestyles at age nine to fullfledged verses at the age of 15. He constantly had to travel back and forth from Boston to New York in order to pursue various opportunities, releasing his first material on vinyl in 2001. Closely tied to fellow Lawrence native and mixtape DJ Statik Selektah, Termanology earned the respect of Boston’s hiphop scene with several 12″ releases as well as his Hood Politics mixtapes, which gradually came to feature more highly regarded lyricists like Royce da 5’9″ and Guru. After releasing the collaborative LP Out the Gate with producer DC the Midi Alien at the onset of 2006, he caught his big break when distinguished producer DJ Premier, whom he met three years earlier, finally gave him one of his signature, scratchladen beats. The result, “Watch How It Go Down,” became an underground hit. Declaring himself the resurrection of his biggest idol, Big Pun, in the opening verse, the conscious hood anthem garnered the earnest MC tons of praise, landing him on the pages of many hiphop publications, notably The Source’s “Unsigned Hype” and XXL’s “Show and Prove” columns. The DJ Premier produced hit later appeared on the Hood Politics, Vol. 4 mixtape in November 2006.
