Conceptual artist Rirkrit Tiravanija will take on the role of curator for this year’s presentation from the Craig Robins Collection. Over the last decade, the Craig Robins Collection of Art & Design has amassed a wide variety of Rirkrit’s works. Rirkirt will select individual pieces that recreate his creative path. He will curate an installation that shows the scope and diversity of his explorations in art. The Craig Robins Collection of Art & Design is one of the top collections in the country. The show will be staged in the Dacra offices, the real estate development company that has fostered the growth and creative spirit of the Miami Design District for decades.
The Craig Robins Collection Presents Untitled (Playtime) by Rirkrit Tiravanija

A scaled down model of Phillip Johnson’s iconic Glass House, artist Rirkrit Tiravanija created this work for the Museum of Modern Art’s (NY) Sculpture Garden in 1997. MoMA utilized the structure as a classroom for the museum’s education program. By evoking Johnson’s famous house, a place both public and private, the artist was able to introduce young viewers to varied ideas about architecture. The work will be on view here in the Design District after a six-year hiatus, and will once again be positioned as a conduit to dialogue about the relationship of art and architecture and public and private space.
de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space Looks At The Bigger Picture

This year rather than doing a traditional thematic exhibition or creating a dialogue between the individual artists, the de la Cruz Collection wanted the overall pattern of the installation to be seen as a large puzzle that transcends preconceived notions of authorship. Some of the walls in the space are installed reminiscent of salon style. On first encounter of the overall exhibition, we are overwhelmed by color and pattern. On closer observation, the pattern dissolves allowing the individual works to reveal themselves and become more familiar. Also on view a special project by Miami based artists Justin Long and Robert Lorie titled “Maintain Rightâ€.
The Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art Presents Beatriz Milhazes

The Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art will present commissioned work by the artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose work was exhibited at the Foundation in Paris in 2009. For debut in the Miami Design District, Beatriz Milhazes has imagined a singular work, a mobile composed of pearls, precious and semi-precious stones. Crafted by the Ateliers Cartier, Aquarium is both a unique installation and a work of jewelry of unexpected dimensions. The space displaying the mobile is designed to resemble a jewel case and reveals the sculpture’s finesse and surprising lightness.
Locust Projects Presents Ruben Ochoa and Agustina Woodgate

Locust Projects will present CORES and CUTOUTS, Ruben Ochoa’s first solo exhibition in Miami. Known for using gritty, vernacular building materials such as concrete, dirt, and steel, the artist will create a new site-specific installation using the building’s substructure as source material. Ochoa will cut through the concrete floor to expose subterranean cross-sections of the gallery’s foundation, revealing the space where earth and architecture intersect. Cored segments of the poured concrete floor will totter on columns of substrate above their normal resting place.
Outside the exhibition space, Locust Projects will present its second annual Billboard Project. Argentinean-born, Miami-based artist Agustina Woodgate, will debut site-specific artwork for billboards and bus shelters surrounding Miami’s Design District and Miami Beach in November and December 2011. Woodgate creates art that fosters interpersonal dialogue, from which meaning collectively emerges through a broad range of disciplines, including sculpture, installation and performance.
Maison Martin Margiela Presents Love, etc.

During Art Basel 2011, Maison Martin Margiela will present Love, etc., an off-site exhibition in the Miami Design District situated near its Miami retail location. This exhibition will feature Maison Martin Margiela’s Line 13, dedicated to objects & publications, and will also explore the Maison’s relationship with interiors. Line 13: Besides the conception of its collections, the unique identity of the Maison has been clearly recognizable in its various spaces – from showrooms to shops – with signature elements such as the use of whites, cotton fabrics, ‘trompe l’œil’, mix of styles and époque, and hints of humor creating a distinctive atmosphere. Line 13 – objects & publications – was introduced in 1999 with a selection of home objects.
Primary Projects presents “Here Lies Georges Wildensteinâ€

Primary Projects will present ‘Here Lies Georges Wildenstein,’ an ambitious contemporary exploration of the enduring socio-political power deeply entrenched within one of the worlds’ most influential, renowned, scandalized, and powerful art dynasties. This broad chronology of highly documented glamour, sensuality, betrayal, luxury and deceit is realized in an aesthetic context. The exhibition features Marc Bijl, Retna, George Sánchez-Calderón, How & Nosm, Miru Kim, Kenton Parker, Christina Petterson, Shelter Serra, Cole Sternberg, Scott Shannon, Andrew Nigon, and Manny Prieres.
Ping-Pong Highlights Basel and Miami

Returning for its fourth year to the Miami Design District, the exhibition Ping-Pong is the result of artist Sue Irion’s frequent traveling between Basel and Miami. After having taken part in various exhibitions and personally viewing others she became aware of similarities and parallels in both cities. Ping-Pong will examine and document the questions of “zeitgeistâ€, media overdose and chance happenings of today’s international art movements as exemplified by the two cities: BASEL and MIAMI. Artists representing Miami, Robert Chambers, Metter Tommerup, Beatriz Montevaro and Gavin Perry; artists representing Basel Sue Irion, Dirk Bonsma and Atelier Hauert-Reichmuth.
Christopher Janney

Trained as an architect and musician, Janney is an American artist whose work explores the relationships between sound and architecture, often transforming otherwise quiet and ordinary spaces into “hyper-reality†environments. Janney has executed a number of large-scale public projects in South Florida, and will be inaugurating a new piece this December at Miami International Airport which will coincide with his first solo exhibition in the Miami Design District.
Haiti Art Expo II

Miami Magazine will present the Second Edition of Haiti Art Expo, by Galerie Marassa and Michele Frisch, Haitis leading art curator and collector. Haiti Art Expo 2011 will display a one-of-a-kind collection of Haitian fine arts comprised of a variety of media, objects dart and photography. The exhibition will feature top works from the contemporary art masters, Philippe Dodard, Louisiane St. Fleurent, Levoy Exil, Payas, Alix Roy, Manuel Mathieu and more. The art sale proceeds will benefit several non-profits that are focusing on empowering the people of Haiti. The event is produced by Michael Capponi and Jeff Feldman and is sponsored by Marquis Vodka.

Dior Debuts Collection by Anselm Reyle

For the first time ever, German contemporary artist Anselm Reyle has collaborated with a major fashion brand. Partnering with Dior, Reyle will debut a new collection of handbags and accessories, entitled Anselm Reyle for Dior, in a pop-up Dior boutique in the Miami Design District. The legendary cannage on the Lady Dior and Miss Dior handbags takes on bold, freestyle interpretations. Twisted, tilted and reinterpreted in a range of colours, each bolder than the next, the topstitching contrasting against bright metallic leathers, it becomes urban, chic and ultra-modern. Fluorescent camouflage shines vividly on handbags, clutches, shoes and scarves. On some models, the artist wanted to superimpose tilted cannage on the camouflage motif, creating a sense of movement and a burst of color. As for the characteristic Lady Dior Charms, they are accompanied by colored triangles, the Berlin artist’s graphic signature.
Pringle of Scotland Presents “LiamGillickforPringleofScotlandâ€

British artist Liam Gillick and Pringle of Scotland Design Director Alistair Carr have created an exciting accessories and knitwear capsule collection labelled ‘LiamGillickforPringleofScotland’. Launching globally with a unique pop-up shop in the heart of the Miami Design District, the project will travel to Berlin and Milan with select retail partners in 2012. In line with Gillick’s discursive mode of practice where the form of exhibition becomes the medium ‘LiamGillickforPringleofScotland’ will be presented on a structure designed by the artist. Alongside the Pringle project Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich and Casey Kaplan, New York will present a major installation by the artist. Pieces from Alistair Carr’s first collections for the brand and feature elements of the forthcoming Pringle store design will also be showcased. The pop-up shop will be run in partnership with renowned luxury destination the Webster, Miami.

Inventory 02 brings together a diverse group of designers to mutually explore the material & intangible qualities of design objects. The collection ranges from makeshift creations inspired by ingenuity to highly aesthetic pieces. Though different in their respective approaches, all the works aim at a common goal. Objects range from make shift creations inspired by ingenuity to highly aesthetic and decorative objects. Much like the world we live in, these objects reflect different viewpoints about common goals. The vastly disparate collection shares an enthusiasm for and a fidelity to intuition and inspiration.
Marni Features Tellas

Marni has collaborated on a multi-faceted project with the multi-media artist, Tellas. Tellas has produced an animated video entitled “On Marni†in which black and white drawings come to life. The artist also painted a corresponding mural on the Marni warehouse/workshop in Pioltello (Milan). Elements from the “On Marni†video will inspire the Marni store window display in the Miami Design District for fair week. The full video will play in store along with a documentary on Tellas’ mural in Milan. An exclusive Tellas designed T-shirt and shopping bag collection will be available in the Miami store.
Nektar De Stagni Shop Presents Hard Poems In Space

Nektar De Stagni and Gallery Diet have joined forces in a collaborative project called Hard Poems in Space. For the project, artists and designers were invited to make functional objects that will be collectively displayed as an interactive social environment at NDS. Located in the heart of the Miami Design District, these four alternative art spaces were each founded by working artists. Using their own art studios as venues each ‘studio’ has created a serious exhibition space to show not their own work, but the work of other artists from around the country as well as Miami. Throughout the year art talks, video screenings and performances take place that energize, inspire and invigorate Miami’s cultural scene. During Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami, each space will present a special exhibition as well as offer organized tours of their studios for guests.

Launching the newly-expanded Luminaire Lab, DesignLove stems from a collaboration between French design magazine Intramuros and DuPont. Part of Luminaire’s philanthropic Love Series, the exhibition boasts original works in Corian® solid surfaces by nearly 100 designers with an online auction to benefit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.
Alessi

Alessi will create a special installation of objects commemorating the company’s 90th anniversary, being celebrated in 2011. Marti Guixe, the Catalan designer, has replicated his “Blank Wall Clock†design for Alessi using iconic pieces from the company’s 90 years of production. The display and exhibition will be mounted in Alessi’s new Miami shop, located in the Miami Design District’s 4141 Design complex.
