ARTLURKER announces Miami Writer’s Prize
With the help of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and donations kindly received from readers, ARTLURKER, an online Miami based contemporary art newsletter, is proud to announce the Miami Writer’s Prize, a new annual prize aimed squarely at promoting and encouraging residents of Miami who write critically about art.
Following a two-year trajectory where in a broad cross section of Miami’s art exhibitions and events have been archived, ARTLURKER, currently written by a cast of guest contributors including artists, curators and critics, is exploring the potential of its influence to cultivate a generation of exciting new writers and reinforce the blogging format.
Judged by a panel of distinguished local professionals and open to anyone from Miami, excluding those already on ARTLURKER’s roster, this year’s prize is held in association with Locust Projects, a leading non-profit art space located in Miami’s Design District that will host an intimate award giving soiree on June 17, 2010.
Hopefuls may submit one original review of a recent art related event. The winning entrant, in addition to having their text published, will be paid an honorary stipend of $800 dollars in return for a month’s worth of guest blogging (eight posts) on ARTLURKER.
Closing Date: June 4, 2010.
The winner will be announced via www.artlurker.com on Friday June 11.
PRIZE REQUIREMENTS:
-Entrants must submit one previously unpublished review of a recent art related event, approximately 800 words in length.
-Entries must be submitted in English, but may be a translation (this must be acknowledged).
-To qualify, entrants may only previously have had a maximum of three pieces of writing on art published in any national or regional newspaper or magazine. Previous online publication is permitted.
-Entrants must be over 18 years of age and reside in Miami or surrounding counties.
-Entries should be emailed as a word (.doc or .docx) attachment. Please do not send images.
-Closing date for submissions is June 4, 2010.
GUEST BLOGGING REQUIREMENTS:
-Posts must be art related
-Author must have first hand experience if writing a review of a recent exhibition or event.
ABOUT THE JUDGES:
Scott Cunningham is the director of the University of Wynwood, an advocacy organization for the spoken and written word in Miami. His freelance journalism has appeared in HOME Magazine, Ocean Drive, Miami New Times, and DNR Magazine, while his poetry has been published in The Harvard Review and McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, among other journals. A nominee for a 2009 United States Artist Grant, he also serves as president of the Miami Poetry Collective and editor of the Cent Journal Series. He lives in Miami with his wife Alexandra.
Ruba Katrib is Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami and Adjunct Professor at New World School of the Arts, Miami. Katrib has recently curated a group exhibition at MOCA, The Reach of Realism, with work by Alex Hubbard, Elad Lassry, Sara Vanderbeek, and others. She is currently working on solo survey exhibitions with Cory Arcangel and Claire Fontaine, each opening in 2010.
René Morales is associate curator at Miami Art Museum. At MAM, Morales has organized several exhibitions, such Space as Medium, Objects of Value, Mark Dion: South Florida Wildlife Rescue Unit, and Miami in Transition, and installed several traveling exhibitions including Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Wifredo Lam in North America, and Andy Warhol: Moving Pictures. Prior to MAM, Morales worked at the RISD Museum in Providence.
Gean Moreno is an artist and writer based in Miami. His work has recently been exhibited at the North Miami MoCA, Kunsthaus Palais Thum and Taxis in Bregenz, Institute of Visual Arts in Milwaukee, Haifa Museum in Israel, Arndt & Partner in Zurich, and Invisible-Exports in New York. He has contributed texts to various magazines and catalogues. In 2008, he founded [NAME] Publications, a platform for book-based projects.

The Miami Writer’s Prize 2010 is held in association with Locust Projects, an alternative, not for profit exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressures of gallery sales or limitations of conventional exhibition spaces.
