Miami Lyric Opera presents Marina: A Spanish Opera in Three Acts 7/30-8/1/09

miamilyricopera06_08_09
Miami Lyric Opera presents Marina: A Spanish Opera in Three Acts
July 30th and August 1st, 2009. 8:00 p.m.
Dates: Thursday, July 30th and Saturday, August 1st, 2009. 8:00 p.m.
Location: Colony Theater. 1040 Lincoln Road. Miami Beach, FL 33139.
Admission: $30

Miami Lyric Opera presents Marina, a Spanish opera in three acts set to music by composer Emilio Pascual Arrieta and lyrics by Francisco Camprodon, under the artistic direction of Raffaele Cardone. The cast will include Beverly Coulter, Maruchi Urquiaga, Aurelio Gabaldon, Hugo Marcos, Lilo del Campo, Diego Baner, Ismael Gonzalez and other fine artists. Alfredo Munar will conduct the MLO Orchestra and Pablo Hernandez will be Chorusmaster.
Marina, the orphaned daughter of a merchant captain, awaits the return of Jorge, the man who took her in after her father’s death. She is in love with him, but as he is older and her guardian, she has never dared tell him the truth. Upon Jorge’s returning from a trip, Pascual loses no time in telling him that he intends to get married, who responded that he has had the same thought, so why don’t they marry on the same day? Pascual names Marina, to Jorge’s shock and consternation. Marina is equally hurt that Jorge apparently wants to marry someone else.
One day Pascual intercepts a sailor bringing a letter from Marina’s father that wrote before dying asking Alberto to give to her. The letter included her father’s declaration of eternal love and that leaps Pasqual to the obvious conclusion, denounces Marina bluntly, breaks off the engagement and cursing rushes away. Jorge appears, and soon understands Pascual’s mistake and the innocent identity of the letter writer. When he hints he will be leaving tomorrow, Marina can no longer avoid telling him the identity of the man she really loves, and they admit their love for one another.
Emilio Pascual Arrieta (1821 – 1894) was born in Puente la Reina, Navarre, and died in Madrid. His Italian training led him, under the favour of the Queen Isabel II, to concentrate on operatic writing; and though he later composed zarzuelas he remained less committed to the renascent art form than his contemporaries such as Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, continuing to write in an essentially Italianate style throughout his life. The 1887, through-sung and rewritten opera version of his zarzuela, Marina, is one of the most popular lyric stage work in the Spanish repertoire.

“Irreversible an International Art Project is an ongoing exhibition exploring the perception of art and the identity of the artist through history and, in our contemporary society”

ABOUT US
Irreversible is an international art project founded in 2005 by Norelkys (Noor) Blazekovic, to portray how in recent decades artists have progressively expanded the boundaries of art, as they have sought to engage in an increasingly pluralistic environment. The creating and understanding of art, are likewise no longer grounded in traditional aesthetics. It is an honor for us to invite each of you to be part of our upcoming Summer event “IRREVERSIBLE 100 Most” to participate in the freedom of developing new models and instruments from everyday life, as Irreversible evolves in its efforts to become a creative medium for the better understanding of the complexities of our contemporary existence. I take great pride in sharing our success with you.
“IRREVERSIBLE 100 Most” will be held and sponsor by the prestigious CIFO (cifo.org), the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Miami, FL USA, a non-profit organization, established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family to foster cultural exchange among the visual arts. Cifo is dedicated to the support of emerging and mid-career contemporary multidisciplinary artists who are challenging the established boundaries that define much contemporary art today.

About Jim Pollock: A Phantasy Pheast
Jim Pollock is an internationally renowned artist best known for his bold and vibrant linoleum prints associated with the band Phish. In the 1980’s as Phish toured relentlessly they embraced Pollock’s unique and organic imagery for tour posters/flyers, t-shirts, and cd covers.

Jim Pollock: A Phantasy Pheast will reveal for the first time a complete retrospective on his two-decade plus career with a chronological collection of Pollock’s life as an artist. In addition to his association with music art, Pollock has a low-key passion for activism and has artfully endorsed environmental and social issues from Hemp paper to solar power to a most ironic commentary on the country’s oil consumption.

A Phantasy Pheast is the largest and most extensive exhibition of Jim Pollock’s artwork ever on display in one location. This exhibit also features a detailed tour through the artist’s unique imagery, shows his technique and also allows the perfect chance meet the artist. For more information visit: www.pollockprints.com or http://www.101exhibit.com.

The Premiere Of Fame Downtown 7/10/09

fame
We at FAME would like to thank everyone for showing up to our Sneak Peek this past Friday evening. It was amazing, astounding, enthralling, and of course messy and downright dirty!
And this weekend will be no exception. We’ve ironed out the kinks and we are ready to rock Downtown this Friday evening. On July 10th, we’re proud to present the Premiere of FAME.
As we showed you this past Friday, FAME is not going to be a typical nightclub experience. With live performances by our talented cast of characters (and yes we really mean “characters”) worthy of a Hollywood epic, well, if the lovechild of Fellini and Quentin Tarantino got together to make a movie, FAME keeps the audience entertained all night long with said live performances, interactive experiences, and classic drinking games worthy of the cheesiest summer camp knockoff flick. And rounding out the entertainment this evening will be none other than our versatile musical maestro, Nikolas.
The madness doesn’t stop early either, as we’re proud to present the premiere of Disco Sh*t, the new Saturday morning afterhours experience to hit Downtown Miami.
Starting at 4 AM, FAME gets down to serious business and explores the dark and dirty side of Hollywood, presenting some of the latest twisted house sounds to come out of the studios of talented DJs and producers the world over.
We’re proud to launch this new experience with none other than one of Miami’s newest DJ/Production duos, the Cocodrills. These youngsters have been tearing up the charts as of late, with a body of work reminiscent of talents much older. Check them out this Saturday morning on the decks at FAME…
RSVP for complimentary admission at rsvp@famedowntown.com or by going to the official FAME website.

Cremata Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its annual Summer Exhibition featuring various artists that have been with the gallery since its inception, and others that have joined us recently. The exhibition comprises 40 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures. The result is something uniquely eclectic and entirely contrary to delimited chronologies and rigorous themes. The joy of the Summer Exhibition always comes more from unexpected juxtapositions, not from the pairing of like with like, allowing the eye and imagination a rare freedom, not telling you what you ought to admire or notice.
The show opens at the gallery with a reception on Friday, July 10th at 7:30 p.m. It will run from July 1st to August 10th from Monday through Friday, 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. or by appointment. It is free and open to the public. All works are available for purchase.

This Summer’s Biggest Reggae Event

Accompanied by a killer band of outstanding reggae musicians, the cast performs all the classic songs from the film soundtrack, including “By The Rivers of Babylon,” the title song, and the unforgettable global phenomenon, “You Can Get It If You Really Want.”

August 29 – September 13
John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to present, for the first time in the United States, the internationally acclaimed hit musical THE HARDER THEY COME, opening August 29 in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert. Direct from London’s West End, THE HARDER THEY COME will offer audiences a peek into the journey of an aspiring reggae star as depicted in the 1972 international breakthrough film that caused a reggae music explosion heard around the world.

Hailed by Time Out as “a real thrill…the band is tight, the clothes are right – it’s a sure-fire smash hit,” THE HARDER THEY COME features a cast of 16 Jamaican-born performers and tells the story of young singer Ivanhoe Martin (played by Rolan Bell) as he arrives in Kingston, Jamaica with dreams of becoming a reggae star. A corrupt and drug-fueled music industry drives him into a fast and furious life as Jamaica’s most-wanted outlaw and most-celebrated underground star. Reggae music star and pioneer Jimmy Cliff starred in the ‘70s film of the same title, which catapulted the island’s signature sound into a globally recognized and respected genre, turning Jimmy Cliff and reggae music in general, into an international sensation. “With top-class acting, singing and dancing, [this] superb production faithfully distils not just the movie’s music and characters, but also, somehow its soul” (The Standard).

“The Harder They Come made music history, introducing the world, and the United States in particular, to reggae music. Miami, in the summer of 2009, will be long remembered as the epicenter of cultural history as we host the U.S. premiere of this hit musical at the Adrienne Arsht Center,” said Adrienne Arsht Center President and CEO, M. John Richard. “With three international stage productions to enjoy this summer, including the return of last summer’s smash-hit Celia: The Life and Music of Celia Cruz and the visual spectacular Fuerza Bruta, South Florida has a world of entertainment options that reflect the diversity of our resident community.”

Accompanied by a killer band of outstanding reggae musicians, the cast performs all the classic songs from the film soundtrack, including “By the Rivers of Babylon,” the title song, and the unforgettable global phenomenon, “You Can Get It If You Really Want.”

The film of THE HARDER THEY COME was written, produced and directed by the late Perry Henzell. Perry also wrote the book for the musical, which was originally produced by Theatre Royal Stratford East and UK Arts. The West End production, which comes to Miami is directed by Kerry Michael and Dawn Reid and produced by Jan Ryan and Robert Fox.

THE HARDER THEY COME is sponsored in part by Heineken USA Incorporated.

TICKETS
Tickets for THE HARDER THEY COME are on sale now. Single ticket prices range from $50 and $95 and can be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at 305.949.6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org. For information on group sales, please call 786.468.2326.

Andres Dominguez solo exhibition opening at Art Rouge Gallery7/11/09

What:  Opening reception of Andres Dominguez’s solo exhibition “Pieles”. Art Rouge Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in our gallery of new collection “Pieles” by Miami based Chilean artist Andres Dominguez. Andres’s works takes on the human body as subject matter, revealing psychological complexities inherent within these structures. After years of creative exploration A. Dominguez developed his own artistic language with his unique combination of the impeccable reproduction of the human figure and his own color concept. His painting reflects the presence and absence or the human form, in all its forms and its fleeting moment of appearance and disappearance.
We will welcome our guests with drinks sponsored by Buena Cepa Wines to celebrate the show. We look forward to seeing you.

More on Jeremy Ellis…
AYRO is a sonic chef who mixes ingredients from across the musical spectrum. The freestyle live set specialist, pianist, singer and MPC virtuoso sounds nothing like you’ve heard before. Audiences stand in awe while witnessing the joyful fury that is his performance style. His fans often resemble that of students as his wildly intelligent, yet unforgivingly danceable tracks perplex the most eager and adept melodic minds. Combining a lifetime of classical training with a meticulous obsession with sound, Ellis demonstrates himself as one of the forerunners of a new era in electronic music pushing instruments beyond their creators’ intentions. He has been called the voice of Detroit’s new sound and even acclaimed by Stevie Wonder himself. In a city with such important heritage as Motown and the birthplace of Techno he was awarded Best Electronic Artist 2009 by Real Detroit Magazine. Ayro has worked with such luminaries as Carl Craig, John Beltran, Recloose, John Arnold, Underground Resistance, Bugz in the Attic and Alton Miller to name a few. With poetic lyrical flow and melodic ingenuity combined with vintage sounds like the Rhodes piano and the Moog with raw sounds of the street through the earthly growl of the 808. Ayro’s intrinsic use of the MPC has grown into a wild toad’s ride that hasn’t been seen since Hendrix non-chalant shredding of guitar licks with his teeth.

opening reception July 10th 7pm – 12am
closing August 10th

Joseph O’Neals first Solo exhibition in Miami is not about a specific theme or incident but rather a feeling of nostalgic just out of reach memories. O’Neals work is viewed with the eyes but understood with the nervous system. He has a unique way of drumming up transcendental dialogue and emotions through an archaic system of symbols and imagery.

Part of the bluetan collective consisting of Geoff Henshall, Brandon Fonville, and Steve Chellis (all of which will have a few pieces on view) and drawing inspiration through his past in North Carolina as well as the bustling energy of is current home in New York City. According to O’Neal “It’s the space between the viewer and the piece I’m after, the resolution to the conflict between the two.”

{So, we went to down to the Chamizo Gallery to see our good friend Gapal, and of course we met some new friends. Then we noticed that the other galleries were open and crowded and realized that it was the Coral Gables Art Walk. So, we wandered around for a bit. Surprisingly, this was one of the best Gables Art Walks that we have been to, event though it was an off weekend, with the holiday.}

The Americas Collection has the pleasure of inviting you to an extraordinary cultural event on Thursday, July 9, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. The gallery will showcase works of Pablo Picasso courtesy of the Ortiz-Gurdian Family Collection. Mr. & Mrs. Ramiro Ortiz are the founders and owners of The Americas Collection and The Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation, a not for profit organization in Nicaragua. As a tribute to their friends, clients, and the cities of Coral Gables and Miami, Mr. and Mrs. Ortiz are honored to share with the public their love for the arts and their support for the cultural enrichment of the local community.
The Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation was created in 1996 with the purpose of diffusing and promoting the visual arts in Central America. This organization has sponsored the various biennials that have taken place in this region for the past 12 years. In 2002, parallel to their art program, the Ortiz-Gurdian Family expanded their commitment to their community by creating the Breast Cancer Program for low income women of Nicaragua. This health program currently saves the lives of approximately 600 women each year.
The Americas Collection is another institution close to Mr. and Mrs. Ortiz’s hearts. Moved by the same love that made The Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation possible, The Americas Collection has dedicated 18 years to the enhancement of Latin American art.
On July 9th, the gallery will present the complete collection of twenty-nine lithographs from the Suite entitled Imaginary Portraits by Pablo Picasso. This exhibition will be on display for cultural and educational purposes only. After a two week presentation at The Americas Collection, the show will embark on a two year traveling exhibition around Central and South America.
This special evening will be accompanied by lectures from two of the most respected persons in the Miami art community, the Director and Chief Curator of the Frost Art Museum, Dr. Carol Damian, and the art critic for El Nuevo Herald, Mr. Carlos Luis. The lectures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
This exhibition will be the last presentation at the gallery’s 2440 Ponce de Leon location. Beginning August 1st, The Americas Collection will continue its exhibitions at 214 Andalusia Avenue in Coral Gables – across the street from its former location.
We hope you can join us for a glass of champagne to celebrate this extraordinary evening with friends. The exhibition will be open from July 9 through July 25, 2009.

What: Members of NYFA’s staff will provide a 90-minute seminar, with a 30-minute Q&A afterward, on Thursday, July 9th at 6pm at Bakehouse Art Complex. Each of New York Foundation for the Arts’ programs and services will be covered with an emphasis on NYFA Source, Fiscal Sponsorship, and the Immigrant Artists Project.

Soul Of Miami Hits 100,000!

{A brief word from Soul Of Miami:
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
As of today, Soul Of Miami broke the 100,000 hit mark! We would like to thank all our fans and friends for using our little site here. We actually started counting our hits back in December, 2008, and in just 7 months have gotten 100,000 hits. For a site that we do almost no advertising for, I think that is pretty darn good. We are very excited that so many people find this a useful resource. We hope to keep doing it for a long time to come. Please continue to enjoy and remember, get out and get in it!}

Nourish prix-fixe menu at Canyon Ranch Grill – July

Just in time for Miami’s hot summer days, Canyon Ranch Grill unveils their July “Nourish” menu, focused on rehydration. Giving locals and residents access to world-class cuisine that help’s address relevant health concerns, the $36/person menu features dishes high in health-promoting antioxidants and rehydrating properties.

First Course: Chilled Watermelon Soup
The high water content of watermelon makes this a great thirst-quenching dish. Watermelon is also rich in lycopene and carotenoids, antioxidants that protect against certain types of cancer.

Second Course: Mixed Greens Salad
These greens are naturally a great source of water. They are also a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and beta-carotene.

Third Course (choice of):
Sashimi Grade Tuna
Searing fish is a great way to preserve its naturally high water content. The additional vegetables increase the water content of this dish and add antioxidants

Red Curry Vegetables
The high water content of the vegetables combined with vitamin C, carotenoids, niacin, vitamin E, zinc, and anti-inflammatory spices makes this a great dish to rehydrate and keep healthy.

Australian Lamb Chops
The plantains in this dish are a great source of potassium, an electrolyte essential for maintaining normal fluid balance. Lamb is also naturally low in calories and a great source of protein. The fruit relish is a great way to add flavor, nutrients, and boost the water content of this dish

Fourth Course: Berry Sorbet
Water is the main ingredient in this dessert. This low-calorie ice cream alternative will rehydrate while providing a healthy serving of antioxidants.

The four-course “Nourish” menu is $36/person (subject to tax and gratuity) and does not include beverages. Canyon Ranch Grill is located at Canyon Ranch Miami Beach [6801 Collins Avenue] and complimentary parking is available for diners. The restaurant is open seven days a week, serving breakfast 7 AM – 10 AM, lunch 11:30 AM – 2 PM, and dinner 6 PM – 11 PM. For reservations please call 305-514-7474.

With a reputation for catering to international crowds mingling in a maze of bikini-clad bodies, gleaming white d’cor and equally beautiful clientele and staff, it comes as no surprise that Nikki Beach Miami holds the title as the “World’s Sexiest Beach Bar” from the Travel Channel’s March broadcast. For over a decade, locals and travelers alike have been flocking to the South Beach hotspot for sun, sounds, and the occasional (or rather frequent) champagne spray. This summer, Nikki Beach turns up the heat as the host of Nikki Style Model Search, a summer long competition to find the face of Nikki Beach Miami 2009.

A joint effort between Nikki Style, Nikki Beach’s international luxury lifestyle magazine, and the legendary One Ocean Drive locale, Nikki Style Model Search is the perfect way to check out (and vote for) Miami’s finest. The ultimate see-and-be-seen event begins July 4 at 1pm where girls can line up for casting calls, complimentary drinks in hand, that will last every weekend throughout the summer. DJs:

DJ Way
djway
In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin yang is used to describe how seemingly disjunct or opposing forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, giving rise to each other in turn. Artistically, DJ Way cultivates yin and yang expressions through the exposure of classical & house music. He holds Masters and Undergraduate performance degress from the prestegious Juilliard School, NYC. While studing classical music at the conservatory his weekend passion for house music evolved from dance floors into the DJ booth. Way’s mixing style and track selection are a direct influence from his expertise in understanding tonal & harmonic implications, performance practice, texture, and musical form. He is known for his musically acrobatic style. Way has traveled across the world performing classical music… along this road he’s left his mark on the underground house music scene as well. Currently residing in Miami, FL Way performs with numerous ensembles including Naples Philharmonic, Sarasota Symphony, Seraphic Fire Chamber Orchestra, Florida Grand Opera, & Palm Beach Opera. He is also a former member of New World Symphony. As DJ Way, he’s held residencies at Float (NYC) as well as Blue, Black Sheep Bar, & Sixx Lounge (Miami). DJ Alan Stenback
alanstenback
A musician and entertainer since an early age, Alan is skilled on several instruments from keyboards to strings. While growing up outside of Cleveland, OH, well before dedicating himself to the turntables and mixing board, Alan picked up the guitar. He spent several years gaining valuable classical guitar training, while simultaneously finding his harder edge on the electric guitar. Thick, driving distortions and drop-d tunings were the bread and butter of his upfront style.
Presently, in the recording studio, Alan dedicates himself to original production and remix work spanning the genres of house and techno. Never complacent, Alan continually evolves his style to satisfy the thirst for new and creative material, and challenge the scene musically while staying true to himself and his roots. His DJing style is geared toward creating a great vibe for the party through impeccable programming and seamless mixing skills. His soundtracks range from tech-house and techno to acid, deep and classic house, while maintaining a solid, clubby groove.

DJ Sebastian C
sebastian
Growing up outside of Toronto, Canada, Sebastian knew at a young age his passion was music. Picking up his first set of decks at the age of 14, he still remembers getting that first 1200 home and staring at it for hours. Passion is what this guy is all about.
Sebastian’s focus has now centering on making his own music to refine the other key technical ability expected of djs in this day and age: production skills. Last year was busy with releases on Nikola Gala’s Escada Music and Plastic City’s Galvanic label. 2009 promises even more with a forthcoming EP on Sultan and Ned Shepard’s esteemed Harem records imprint. Keeping his ear to the ground, expect great things to come from this up and coming producer.

She began DJing in 2000, in Gainesville, FL, and quickly began earning gigs at various clubs, including Full Circle, Bleu, and others. She began playing out in Orlando and south Florida shortly thereafter. Soozin now resides in Miami and still DJs regularly at various clubs in the tricounty area. She also recently gained international exposure, playing opening night at Liquid in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. She is also Music Director for Life Is Art.

The musical performance is a range from an indefinite mix of culture and technology we have evolved a limitless sensation to stimulate various compression and transverse physical properties to produce a sense of intensity, which causes a direction of auditory art. We have paired this auditory art by providing different levels of illuminated projections that are distributed on the musical performers. The projections create a theatrical setting producing illusions of continuous interconnected changeovers to accommodate the sounds In the conclusion of the performance the viewing audience is treated to lollipops an invention that is still something of a mystery that dates back to the middle ages.

UOM
uom1 uom2 uom3
UOM is a different type of musical project. I think that we are doing music that is unlike anything happening on the Miami scene right now. It’s not rock or pop, even though we carry a fair amount of rock & pop influences; but it’s not avant-garde classical either… we play without scores and with no affiliation to academies or institutions. But we do play music, and we do so with fun, soulfulness, and a lot of creativity. We place the emphasis on non-traditional instrumental techniques, and our approach to composition is collective and ususally totally improvised.

FEATURED VISUAL ARTISTS

Antonia Wright
Aaron Painted Eyes7-1 tree paint4 tree paint-2
I am a Miami born, Cuban-America artist, whose work employs photography, poetry, performance, installation, and video art and the interaction between these forms. My pieces are ‘social experiments’, highlighting the bizarre within the everyday façade of the ‘normal’.

Brett Sauce
keywest1 miamiworld1 newyork1
Brett Michael Sauce, was born and raised in Southern Louisiana. Just southwest of New Orleans, in the heart of Cajun country. Brett’s artistic talent became apparent very early in life. After completion of high school, Sauce attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, and graduated Advertising Design. He worked in advertising, from production artist, to art director, to freelance advertising illustrator. He has always specialized in airbrush. His artistic career encompasses corporate projects in Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New Orleans.

Carla Fache

Painting is the faith within me, that endless hope that we as human beings carry through life. In my artwork as in my life, everyday brings a new challenge, a new goal to reach. When I paint, my canvas and I drift to another world, almost a dream world to me. All my senses come into play: my emotions, my eyes, my hands, my canvas, my ears… I’m in tune with myself, and all that surrounds me.

Carol Kingsley

“In my long walks I’m fascinated at the beauty, light and life that exists in everything in nature and wish all through my paintings could see it, feel it and be grateful for it, as I am.” Venezuelan artist from british descent, has lived in Rio and Caracas and has been a Coral Gables resident since 1979. She received a Bachellors Degree in Fine Arts and Philosophy from Universidad Catolica Andres Bello. She likes to paint with a limited pallette using layers of washes that portray an exceptional display of shadows and amazing light which she certainly captures in her paintings.

Daniel Marosi

This series of paintings is titled Wasted. The work showcases specific people known to my particular group of friends. The paintings are emblems of an urban tribe that lives mostly in South Beach. In my life there was a period of time after college when life got a little random and in between developing a career and bombing in love and experience, the messiness can fondly be remembered with all its awkward and freaky moments in these images.
– – – –
Deborah Weed
dramaqueendiscover Stupendous-LIA Plungediscover1
Water sculptures are the primary medium for my mixed media pieces. The result is a salubrious technique that takes color into a new arena of purity that is vivid, fluid and alive. Residing in trendy South Beach is my inspiration. The vibe here is bold and daring and my studio is literally on the white sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. According to my collectors, my work titillates the senses and is very sensual.
– – – –
Eileen M. Baldwin
COLORSCAPES EARTH-ELEMENTS
My art is inspired by my collective experience in music, advertising and exposure to multi-cultural influences. And by my curious, creative and spiritual nature. “Why paint?” It satisfies my desire to be inventive and to explore my creative sensibilities. Also, it’s the immediacy of painting and play of expression that appeals to me. I combine and contrast the abstract and representational. In part, my work may contain spiritual and symbolic references, figurative, abstracted images or the essence of nature. I work on canvas, masonite board or wood using acrylic, oil, metallic and other additives.

Through my art, I aim to create a gratifying and refreshing experience by stimulating contemplation and escapism in a viewer. I like to think of my paintings as puzzle segments that provide a glimpse of pictorial worlds that are inviting and free to inhabit. Through the juxtaposition of curious references, and the fusion of abstract marks, I assign unconventional roles to familiar imagery. The whimsical reconstructions of dislocated elements describe settings that emanate meaning over time, resulting in work that is simultaneously deliberate and vague.

As visual artist, I am interested in such themes as migration, uprooting, human identity, impermanence and the values we share and/or differ as a society. The consequences of migration and displacement at an early age are the single most determining events that have shaped my identity and compelled me to become an artist. I use the visual arts as a vehicle to stimulate ideas, provoke thought, and confront commonly accepted attitudes. My works are points of departure, rather than destinations.

Obsessed with obsessive obsession. To do, do, do, and do again over, the same. And in the night to dream to do, and in the morning to crave to do. The drive driven by wanting to see the do, do, doing be done. To start to do all over again, to wonder how it can be done and done and done the same but differently this time. Do it big, do it bold, do, do, do it for you so you don’t have to. So you can see the result of the doing after it has already been done, and you can wonder what it is like to do it too.

Tony ‘N Tina Come to Mansion Miami Beach

Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding is the original interactive theatre event. Created in 1988 by Artificial Intelligence, the show opened in New York City and is still running today. TNT has played every major city in America including current productions in New York City, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago and now Miami.

The glamour of South Beach is just the place to see Tony and Tina get hitched. The Latin flavor of Miami permeates the production with Italian and Cuban family members coming together with the audience. At Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding you will be attending the ceremony, mingling with relatives and friends, eating, drinking and dancing to the soulful Carribean beat of the bilingual DJs Donny and Dee Dee Dulce. The evening includes a champagne toast, an International buffet, and of course, a slice of wedding cake.

Revanche
(Directed by Götz Spielmann/Austria/2009)
With Johannes Krisch, Irena Potapenko, Andreas Lust
revancheposter2
At once a gripping thriller and a tragic drama of nearly Greek proportions, Revanche is the stunning, Oscar–nominated, international breakthrough film from Austrian filmmaker Götz Spielmann. In a ragged section of Vienna, hardened ex-con Alex works as an assistant in a brothel, where he falls for Ukrainian hooker Tamara. Their desperate plans for escape unexpectedly intersect with the lives of a rural cop and his seemingly content wife. With meticulous, elegant direction, Spielmann creates a tense, existential, and surprising portrait of vengeance and redemption, and a journey into the darkest forest of human nature, in which violence and beauty exist side by side.

Saving Our Reefs
(a documentary film by WLRN/2008)
savingourreefs3
The beauty and splendor of North America’s only living coral barrier reef has attracted millions of people to the warm waters of the Florida Keys. This living coral reef system is home to thousands of species of marine life that use the corals irregular topography as an ideal place to shelter them. Unfortunately, the popularity of this underwater ‘Garden of Eden’ has created a negative impact on this national treasure. Pollution, harvesting of coral, and excessive fishing have compromised this fragile ecosystem. This documentary, which aims to create awareness about the importance of protecting this delicate ecosystem, explores the state of the coral reefs today and challenges viewers to help in “Saving Our Reefs.”
The film will be introduced and followed by a Q&A with an expert on the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (TBA)

“The most difficult dictatorship to hate is your own”—Giulio Andreotti
ildivoposter3
In Rome, at dawn, while everyone is sleeping, one man is awake. That man is Giulio Andreotti. He’s awake because he has to work, write books, move in fashionable circles, and, last but not least, pray. Calm, crafty, and inscrutable, Andreotti is synonym of power in Italy for over four decades. He emerges unscathed from everything: electoral battles, terrorist massacres, slanderous accusations. He is untouched by it all, unchanging. Until the counter power in Italy, the Mafia, declares war on him. . .

Mika Rottenberg. Video

As winner of the first Cartier Award at the 2006 Frieze Art Fair, Mika Rottenberg was commissioned to create the video “Chasing Waterfalls: The Rise and Fall of the Amazing Seven Sutherland Sisters.” The video is a glimpse into the lives of seven sisters from the 19th century who captured attention for their extremely long hair with which they built a fortune by selling their unique anti-baldness cure. Invoking the mystical properties of women’s hair, Rottenberg uses a feminist approach to investigate the worlds of economics and production. The legend of the Seven Sutherland Sisters inspired Rottenberg’s multi-channel installation Cheese at the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Mika Rottenberg is represented by Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York.

CCEMIAMI PRESENTS: VIDAS MINADAS, 10 AÑOS
On Friday June 26, CCEMiami will open the exhibition “Vidas Minadas, 10 años” that will visit Miami after being presented in New York as part of the celebration of the International Day for the Sensibilization on Land Mines and the Assistance in Mine Action at the UN headquarters.

“Vidas Minadas, 10 años”, was initiated in 1995 by Gervasio Sánchez, a winner of the prestigious Premio Internacional de Periodismo Rey de España 2008, and is supported by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for the Development (AECID), Intermón Oxfam, Manos Unidas, Médicos sin Fronteras and DKV Seguros.

The show presented at CCEMiami has been compiled in a book and follows up on the personalized stories of the first photographic project initiated in 1997 that documented the dramatic aspect of the victims of anti-personal mines in countries such as Bosnia, Mozambique, Cambodia, El Salvador, Iraq, Angola, Afghanistan, Nicaragua or Colombia. In this new exhibition, we can see the evolution of some of the victims portrayed in 1997 that have established a personal relationship with the photographer. The project aims to bring light to this serious problem and the situation of its victims so as not to forget. “Vidas Minadas” was presented for the first time in the UNESCO headquarters in December of 1998 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, when Gervasio Sánchez was named “UNESCO’s Special Peace Messenger.”

At present, only 151 countries have signed the Ottawa Treaty and there are 167 million mines still active in 78 countries worldwide. The cost of manufacturing a land mine is less than 3 Euros, but the cost of searching, deactivation and destruction is more than 750 Euros. Human rights organizations remind that the problem still needs a resolution and that is imperative to continue working to help the victims and the deactivation process.

In 2008, the show visited Paris on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after touring in several cities in Spain.

Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II Placemaking at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus 7/18/09

IM_ChangeConf_FrontWeb
How Local Residents Can Create Better Parks, Beaches, Blocks and Other Public Spaces “Placemaking” is Focus of Upcoming Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II

The second in a three-year series, the Imagine Miami Changemaker Conference II on July 18, 2009 focuses on the power of place. Local residents will learn how to create and sustain the public spaces that build community, from community gardens to family-friendly parks and city blocks. Presented by the Human Services Coalition (HSC), the event will be held in downtown Miami at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, in the Chapman Conference Center, from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. To pre-register (deadline July 10), residents can go to www.imaginemiami.org or call (305) 576-5001.

“By bringing together more than 200 aspiring, emerging and seasoned community leaders from diverse backgrounds, including participants in HSC’s civic programs,” says Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius, “we’ll cross-fertilize good ideas and practices and inspire people with real-life examples of how residents are transforming local places. We’ll also help people connect with each other and with specific opportunities.”

Participants will learn to use innovative place-related tools and approaches for advocacy, resident engagement and community development, including community mapping and GIS, asset mapping, and placemaking tools developed by Project for Public Spaces (PPS). PPS (pps.org) has worked in 2,000 communities in 26 countries around the world, helping people turn their public spaces into vital community places, with programs, uses, and people-friendly settings that build local value and serve community needs. Hands-on workshops will be led by Cynthia Nikitin of PPS (pps.org), Dwayne Marsh of PolicyLink (policylink.org), Delia Caderno of Partnership for Community Transformation and Jacqueline Sartan of the University of Miami. In the placemaking workshop, residents will break into groups and use the PPS Place Evaluation tool to evaluate specific sites in downtown Miami.

Conference attendees can win $500 for their local place-based project (like a community garden). Local groups have until July 1 to submit a one-page proposal to create/improve a local public space. During the conference, attendees will vote for one of ten semi-finalist proposals. The three finalists will have five minutes each to pitch their project during the conference, with additional time to answer questions from a panel of judges and conference attendees. Judges include Charles Auslander of The Children’s Trust, Kris Smith of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, Cynthia Nikitin and Corinna Moebius.

Funded by The Children’s Trust and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the conference is designed to be family friendly. Eco-educational activities for kids will take place all day, led by Kiki Mutis (Director of the Community Science Workshop at Citizens for a Better South Florida) and environmental educator Sofie Geckler. Near the close of the conference, kids will share their own ideas for better neighborhoods with the rest of the attendees. Parents can bring children 5 and up for no extra cost, and up to 80 parents are eligible for a discounted $5 registration fee if they apply by July 3rd . The regular conference price is $25.

Other conference highlights include a keynote presentation by Cynthia Nikitin, a World Café dialogue on creating family-friendly neighborhoods, hands-on demonstrations of online mapping tools (e.g., policylink.org and the Children’s Trust’s KidsMap), exhibits showcasing local place-related projects, a video Story Booth (courtesy of WPBT’s uvuvideo.org), and a culminating drumming activity led by local artist/activist Lela Lombardo.

Following the conference, participants can continue their connection and collaboration with local changemakers via our “Community Cafes”: neighborhood-based dialogues led by local residents trained in community dialogue techniques. They can also connect via our online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and continue building skills, awareness and connections via HSC’s advocacy and leadership programs and workshops.

About the Changemaker Conference Series
HSC launched its three-year series of Changemaker Conferences (two a year) in response to the success of its 2008 Imagine Miami Summit on Arts, Culture & Civic Engagement, which South Florida residents described as uplifting, connecting, energizing and transformative. The series is part of HSC’s broader strategy to cultivate networks of trust (social capital) and increase residents’ capacity to be catalysts for participatory, community change. They are also an important vehicle for connecting the emerging leaders participating in HSC’s civic programs, including Public Allies Miami-Dade, Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI), Advocacy Corps Training (ACT), Neighborhood Leadership Program, Creative Impact and Imagine Miami. Through the civic programs of HSC, single parents, minority youth, immigrants, low-income residents and others have become leaders in their communities.

The conferences build upon each other, and each increases awareness and knowledge of particular techniques, success stories and opportunities. The first conference (April 4, 2009) focused on asset-based approaches (leveraging community strengths); storytelling for social impact; and community dialogue techniques. By 2011, we expect at least 1,000 local residents to become champions for civic engagement and community involvement in South Florida.

A committee of hard-working and dedicated volunteers, interns and contributing HSC staff has been meeting weekly to help Imagine Miami director Corinna Moebius plan the conference. Core volunteers include Sam Van Leer of Urban Paradise Guild, Linda McGlathery of the Garden Project, Harold Silva of Miami Dade College, Roger Horne of Belafonte TACOLCY youth center, Brad Knoefler of the Omni/Park West Redevelopment Association and Luz Agudelo, an HSC Public Ally who works with Little Havana residents. Interns include Alexandra Torres and Julia Atkinson.

In-kind support is provided by Miami Dade College and uVu (www.uvuvideo.org, the community video project of local public TV station WPBT).

About the Human Services Coalition (HSC) and Imagine Miami
Founded in 1995, the Human Services Coalition (HSC) identifies and launches innovative strategies to help people and communities thrive. HSC works through a network of partner organizations, linking people with financial education, healthcare information, public benefits and educational and economic opportunities. HSC’s programs promote economic self- sufficiency, participation in civic life and respect across many divides.

HSC inspires people to get involved and prepares them to step up to leadership roles that lead to long-term community transformation. As we learn to live and work together, we find common purpose and build a more just and inclusive society.

The Imagine Miami (IM) initiative was founded by HSC President and CEO Daniella Levine, and has grown into a “civic network” of local changemakers. IM connects people through the Changemaker conferences and other workshops, its online civic network (imaginemiami.ning.com), and special guides to local resources (see www.imaginemiami.org).

Malena was born in Havana, Cuba. She began her musical studies at various art schools when she was only 18 years old and graduated from the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory with diplomas in violin, guitar, and musical writing. Her singing career developed by coincidence. Malena received her initial proposal to perform at the anniversary of the Casino Parisien, at the Hotel National, Havana’s most distinguished hotel. She accepted and performed for the first time together with her mother, the legendary Cuban singer Elena Burke. The following year, she was selected to perform as headliner at the Tropicana, where continued as principal performer for five years. Then, she proceeded to perform at the most acclaimed nightclubs in Havana, including the Riviera, Havana Hilton and Capri showrooms. With her success also came demands for tours. Malena traveled to Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Germany, Austria, Italy, Finland, Holland, and Venezuela, where she decided to stay in 1993. In Caracas, she performed continuously at many of the best places like EI Palacio del Mar, La Boite, The Seasons, and went to perform to other cities, including Valencia and Barquisimeto. In 1995, Malena came to the United States. She has been to New York, Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, Dominican Republic and Venezuela to participate in festivals and concerts. Malena has recorded “Salseando”, “Cuba on Fire”, “Malena Burke”, “Super Cuban All Stars”, “Bolero Jazz: Misty”, “A Solas Contigo” vol. I & II, and “Contigo en la Distancia”.

Los Soneros de Miami (9:00 – 10:00 p.m.)
Los Soneros de Miami is a group formed by young Cuban musicians with the aim of preserving the authentic sound of Cuban music: Son. They are known for keeping the characteristic format by employing traditional acoustic instruments.

Teatro Flamenco Carmen Rubio (8:30 – 9:00 p.m.)
Carmen Rubio, native from Madrid, graduated with honors from the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dance in Madrid. She’s had an outstanding career as prima ballerina of the best companies in Spain. Carmen has a dance group that combines the traditional Spanish dances along with the very famous Flamenco. Teatro Flamenco Carmen Rubio comprises dancers and musicians from Spain, United States and Latin America; it is a young company focused on the Flamenco with strong roots in theater.

Danny Ricardo (8:00 – 8:30 p.m.)
Danny Ricardo was born in Panama and started his career at an early age. He began studying singing since the age of 5 in choral music Gospel of Panama. Danny has represented his country at several international festivals such as “Evento Centroamericano de interpretes”, Miss Universe 2002 pre-show, Festival de la Canción de Viña del Mar in Chile, thus highlighting his home country Panama. Danny Ricardo just recorded his first album that will be released in the upcoming month of June.

Laura Cozar (7:00 – 7:30 p.m.)
Laura is from a small town called Ronda, situated south of Spain. She was born under the sign of Cancer, which makes her a dreamer, creative and with great sensitivity. From a very early age she discovered her artistic talent and the need to expose it. She soon felt the need to perform on stage. At the early age of 10 she participated in her first musical theater and continued to do so until she finished high school. At 24 years he decided to go to Madrid in search of new experiences. Laura now lives in Miami and remains on track of achieving her biggest dream, her first album.

ART / ARTE
Cremata Gallery
Cremata Gallery is pleased to present Argentinean Visions: from Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics, an exhibition featuring an exciting collection of acrylics, oils, collages, inks, and watercolors, from the fifties to today. From Italo-Argentinean Modernist masters Bruno Venier and Carlo Monzani, who has exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, to contemporary artists living in Argentina. We are presenting 17 artists with very different styles. Like US art, Argentine art has a strong flavor of the melting pot, that has lately been turning from European influences to its native resources. Many of the paintings and water colors in the show were inspired by the École de Paris, from staid academic works to surrealism. Others are more indigenous. Join us for this awaited summer show on Viernes Culturales, have a glass of wine and enjoy our exhibit. Exhibition runs through July 30th, 2009.
