Jim Pollock Walking Fish, 1997
www.101exhibit.com
101 Exhibit | 101 NE 40th Street | Miami | FL | 33137

Renowned artist Jim Pollock, legendary for creating the visual imagery for the cult status band Phish, comes to 101/exhibit to reveal for the frst time a complete retrospective on his two-decade plus career.

Jim Pollock: A Phantasy Pheast will not only lead his fans through a chronological history of Pollock’s life as an artist, but it will also reveal his process. Pollock will be flmed and broadcast live in streaming video via www.101exhibit.com printing a limited edition run of a print designed specifcally for this show.

Famous for his vibrant linoleum prints, show posters, and album artwork, Pollock got his start almost accidentally. As told by Pollock to Paul Grushkin and Dennis King, authors of the recently published book Art of Modern Rock “My wife was teaching a class, ‘Methods of Teaching Art,’ for her education degree, and she had to do a linoleum print. I thought it looked fun, and so I picked up an extra block to cut, and I really have not stopped since.”

By 1999, Jim was carving 12” x 24” blocks and printing with an ancient iron crankwheel bookbinding hand press. To print a poster this large Jim was required to crank the pressure plate down four times. Multiply that by the number in a run (sometimes up to 600) and then by the number of colors (one plate per color) and you end up with quite a labor-intensive process.

The artist’s more recent work has been very personal, dealing with environmental and social-political themes. He prefers to print on hemp paper and is committed to the re-legalization of hemp as a valuable farm commodity. He has also begun to print larger images using a Heidelberg letterpress machine.

Pollock is diligently creating brand new commissions for several leading Jam Bands, including Phish. And however inevitable the musical association, there is a lot more to Pollock than band posters. Having a low-key passion for activism, the printer has artfully endorsed environmental and social issues from Hemp paper to solar power to a most ironic commentary on the country’s oil consumption. By addressing such affairs, the artist has further continued exploring his craft while reaching new and larger audiences.

The largest and most extensive exhibition of Jim Pollock’s artwork ever on display in one location, “A Phantasy Pheast” is not only a detailed tour through the artist’s unique imagery, but the perfect chance to see for the frst time the most private and unique works and meet Jim. For more of Jim Pollock and his work, or to purchase prints, please contact or visit us online at www.101exhibit.com. This exhibition will be on display at 101/Exhibit from the 25thof June through the 18th of July.

Target Wednesday After Hours: Walk-through Exhibit with Collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl and Lecture by Artist Carlos Estevez

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum presents Target Wednesday After Hours on June 3rd at 6 p.m. Collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl will walk through The Museum’s current exhibition, Because I Say So. Following the walk-through, a presentation titled “Theatrum Mundi: A Journey Through 17 Years of Work” will be given by Cuban artist Carlos Estevez as part of the Félix González-Torres Community Art Project at FIU. The event is free and open to the public.

Major collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl present the often unseen sculpture that is central to their significant contemporary art collection. The Scholls have been in the forefront as collectors and supporters of emerging and established contemporary artists for many years. They describe their process as looking for “work that succeeds both on and below the surface, evoking a strong response, and not necessarily a positive one. “So long as a viewer is engaged enough to give a reaction, either one of pleasure or discomfort, we feel that the work has succeeded”. Their vision for the future of their artists has not only resulted in extraordinary recognition for work that was virtually unknown, but also, as they certainly “took chances” in their choices over the years, in the compilation of a collection that is as unique as it is provocative and representative of the cutting-edge of art.

Carlos Estevez studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana Cuba, where he was born. Recently he was invited by The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York to participate in a seminar on Cuban art. He was one of the finalists for the 2009 Emilio Sanchez award granted by The Cintas Foundation and The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, where two of his pieces are currently being exhibited.

Estevez’s presentation is sponsored by Félix González-Torres Foundation, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, The Department of Art and Art History, The Latin American and Carribean Center(LACC), and the Cuban Research Institute(CRI) of Florida International University. After the presentation by Carlos Estévez, there will be a reception. For more information on Estevez’s Lecture or to RSVP please call the Cuban Research Institute at (305) 348- 1991.

The 5th Annual IndepenDANCE Pool & Beach 4th of July Party 7/4/09

pool_mailer
independance_blu2
Saturday, July 4th, the legendary IndepenDANCE Pool and Beach Party returns for it’s fifth straight year. Since it’s inception a mere half-decade ago, the IndepenDANCE event has become the hallmark of the Miami summer, bringing such luminaries to the decks as Erick Morillo, Steve Lawler, Armin Van Buuren, Boris, Mark Knight, Kaskade, and Behrouz for an energetic afternoon and evening of eclectic dance music sounds poolside at the luxurious Surfcomber Hotel on South Beach.
Not content to rest on their laurels, the team behind these stellar events is once again rasing the bar for their fifth annual event. In an extremely rare daytime appearance, two of the true pioneers of the American house music scene, Danny Tenaglia and Victor Calderone, will be converging on the Surfcomber Hotel pool for a massive afternoon and evening of relentless beats.
Even the most neophyte dance music fan will recognize these legends. With a career spanning over thirty years, Danny Tenaglia is known around the world for defining the term, “marathon set”, with a ten-hour stretch being an average night at work for this defining DJ. Behind the decks and in the studio, Danny has been at the forefront of every major dance music movement over the course of his career, from house, to progressive, to techno and beyond. Unable to be categorized, fans will simply describe his style as “Danny”, as his sets have to be experienced to be believed.
As if Danny was not enough for a massive afternoon out, IndepenDANCE brings out another legend, Victor Calderone. Learning his first DJing tricks from Danny himself over twenty years ago, Victor Calderone is no stranger to massive crowds or fame. Whether he’s rocking crowds of ten thousand or more in Ibiza, Montréal, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, or here in Miami, Victor knows how to handle the most diverse crowds on earth. No stranger to the studio, Victor’s own productions are sought out by globetrotting DJs the world over, and his studio magic has been sought out by the best in the business, including Madonna, Depeche Mode, Gloria Estefan, and Beyoncé.
Of course, this is not all the IndepenDANCE crew has in store for the masses, with more DJ talent being added to the roster as the holiday weekend draws closer.

Start Up Weekend The Launch Pad University of Miami 6/5-7/09

If you are a startup or self employed you must come to this event! Here is some info about what to expect:

Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects. Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, the weekend is a concept of a conference focusing on learning by creating. It is known for its quick decisions, ‘out of the box’ thinking (oh no, the buzzwords are attacking!), unique facilitation technique and letting the founders show what they can do.

The participants that attend a Startup Weekend decide what they want to tackle over the weekend and come out at the end with several developed companies or projects. Attendees are responsible for bringing the same desire and passion to the project and walk out of the room with the task at hand, in a short 54 hours. Sound intense? It is.

StartUp Weekend is open to the public.

This is an excellent opportunity to get your hands dirty starting your very own companies!

Free Concert & Charity Fundraiser in Coral Gables Features Live Music Jamming & Great Raffle Prizes 6/5/09

This Friday Night, June 5th Free Concert & Charity Fundraiser in Coral Gables Will Feature Live Music Jamming & Great Raffle Prizes

As the economy continues to force most to tighten their belts and closely monitor their cash flow many organizations are feeling the strain. Best Buddies, a well known 501©(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities is no exception. This year they find themselves straining to send participants to their 2009 Annual Leadership Conference. When news of this reached local rock band and winners of nine Status QuO South Florida Live Music Awards, The Coffee House Gypsies, they joined forces with the elegant Hotel Saint Michel in Coral Gables and all of their friends to help the cause…

On the evening of Friday June 5th, just a short walk from Miracle Mile’s art exhibits, The Hotel Saint Michel will host one of the CHG’s popular acoustic/unplugged jam sessions. The jam show will last from 8:00 PM till about 10:30. Admission is free and all ages are welcome to attend. Invited jam guests include members of the band “Pretty On Paper” and local folk legend Valerie Wisecracker.

But wait! That’s not all…

Local record label Tenement Hall Productions of Miami will donate CDs of the band’s thirteen track 2008 release “The Artist” to sell during the show. All profits will go towards benefiting Best Buddies Leadership Conference 2009.

The album was described in a Muse’s Muse Music Review of The Coffee House Gypsies as being “as magical as their name implies.” Miami New Times’ Local Motion said that “Fans of Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas and the Papas, and 97.3 FM should dig this group without question. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing and give a generally upbeat feel to the 13-track album” and last September RAG Magazine quoted sound engineer Cosmo Ohms saying The Coffee House Gypsies are “nu-folk rock for today’s generation.”

But wait, there is still more!

The band plans to hold a raffle to benefit the cause: all profit made from the sale of raffle tickets will go towards helping send attendees from Best Buddies to the Leadership Conference. One lucky winner will win tickets for two to an Orlando Florida theme park and another will win a two night stay for two at the luxurious Hotel Saint Michel!! Winners will be announced at 10:00 at the event and tickets are expected to sell for a mere $15 or $20.

Not bad huh?

The event was organized by the band’s lead singer/songwriter, Albert Damian Mata, in collaboration with Hotel Saint Michel and Tenement Hall Productions, LLC. When told what the band was doing to help Best Buddies with their Leadership Conference the activities coordinator for the non-profit, Liz Smith (who coincidentally happens to also be a loyal fan and a regular at CHG concerts and jam parties) said “It is just all sorts of cool!”

Mark, the general manager for The Hotel Saint Michel, explained that he had been trying to set up an event with The Coffee House Gypsies for some time, so when the opportunity to do this with them presented itself he was more than happy to jump in. “My son was actually very involved with Best Buddies when he was in high school a few years back, so I personally know all the good that they do. We at Saint Michel are just very happy to help.” The hotel has volunteered to serve free cheese platters while donating one dollar to the cause for every alcoholic drink sold during the show.

Acoustic/unplugged jam sessions and performances are nothing new to the now pop-rock band. They started out performing acoustic shows in local coffeehouses such as Joffreys and Luna Star. “We used to hang out at a local Starbucks writing music… the regulars got to know us and nicknamed us ‘those coffeehouse gypsies’ and the name stuck.” That is what they told The Miami Herald’s Rayme Samuels last November when they were given the title of The Herald’s ‘Band of The Hour’. Since then they have blossomed into a full rock band, playing bigger venues and shows alongside acts such as The Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Jahfe’, and City of God, and even headlining at shows such as The Tobacco Road 96 Anniversary Celebration.

“We still do private parties and acoustic jam sessions a lot though,” the band’s Alex Norris says, “Its fun for us and our fans love it.”

Online one local fan blogs about how “they host private house jams for their fans and they throw huge parties where everyone gets to hang out and sing along with them” while another fan (Hector) posts, “The full blown electric shows are great. But I will always perfer the acoustic jam sessions. That’s when you really get the feel of what this band is all about. The intimate, candle lit rooms full of friends, family, fans and other local artists is really an experience that shouldn’t be missed.”

Most recently Mata made a surprise cameo appearance in Tampa and “jammed” with singer/songwriter Bradley Ashby at Beak’s Old Florida on May 29, 2009. The two harmonized on songs by Incubus, Melissa Etheridge, Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty. They even did some original songs such as Bradley’s “Its Raining Now.” Bradley kept telling audience members, “Believe it or not none of this is practiced or rehearsed” to which Mata replied “This is what jamming is all about, baby.” The crowd cheered the duet’s performance. “I still can’t believe that Albert Damian from The Coffee House Gypsies is here” said Bradley into the mic.

And so on June 5th the Gypsies will once again “jam” for an audience. No fancy effects, no electric distortion, no reverbs or delays, just good old passion for music.

“Our goal is to try to raise $1,000 in one night.” says Mata. “If we can generate enough money to send just one more kid to that conference it will be a really great accomplishment, I will personally be very, very happy with that.”

And The Gypsies are no strangers to supporting local causes neither. Since 1997 they have been active in the community with causes such as HIV & AIDS Research, Cancer Research, Local Emerging Arts and Local Independent Music, Support for US Troops, Equal Rights & Human Rights/Amnesty International, Batten Disease, Eco-Awareness & Conservation, Support for Local Animal & Pet Lovers, and more.

“As far as we can tell we only have this one life here,” says Mata, “So why not use it to try to make as many good things happen as possible?”

The acoustic/unplugged jam concert event for Best Buddies will take place on Friday, June 5th at 8:00 PM at The Hotel Saint Michel located at 162 Alcazar Avenue in Coral Gables. Donations can also be made online to the Best Buddies Kintera Fundraiser Page.

Updates!

{Hi everyone! A quick note from your host. I just wanted to apologize for the lack of updates the past few days. For any who blinked and missed it, we produced another event this weekend. It was called FIESTA! and it went really well. We are very excited because it exceeded all our expectations, but we are really tired and have not had any time to update. Starting Monday, we will be right back at it with the fun and frivolity! Also, we will be producing many more events through our other organization, Life Is Art, so hopefully you can come out and enjoy those sometime.}

Presented by Miami’s own Moksha Family Productions at 7th Circuit Studio (228 NE 59th St.), festivities begin at 8 p.m. and will include performances of the band’s hits such as “Besitos Chiquiticos,” “Yes” and “Holy.”

Summer Solstice attendees can also engage in Tarot readings, a spirit auction, CD giveaways, raffles and spontaneous dancing, as HERE II HERE’s fused sounds of soul, world, pop and Afro-Cuban enliven the room starting at 10 p.m.

Organically connected through chance meetings, HERE II HERE band members Edwin Itoh, Jaime Triana, Alex Perez, Kazuhiro Itoh and Ashley Ruiz (formerly of Menudo) came together in 2004 and have been inspiring crowds with lyrics of awareness, harmony, laughter and love ever since. Their easy-to-understand, catchy tunes form a genre of their own: entertainment with awareness, truth, laughter, peace and love.

“Music is the invitation for everyone to notice the connection and harmony that exists in the world,” band manager Bryan Reeves says. “It promotes an awareness of reality. When we understand just how interconnected we really are, it makes relationships and creativity flow and inspires peace.”

Sponsored in part by Moksha Production Family and nonprofits The Voice of The Earth and The Environment Coalition of Miami Beach, the Summer Solstice Bash will bring together and honor spiritual community leaders and provide vegetarian tastes courtesy of Live Food, Sublime and Jef’s Tomato Toasties.

Hailed as one of the finest films ever made, legendary director François Truffaut’s early masterpiece Jules and Jim charts the relationship between two friends and the object of their mutual obsession over the course of twenty-five years. Jeanne Moreau stars as Catherine, the alluring and willful young woman whose enigmatic smile and passionate nature lure Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre) into one of cinema’s most captivating romantic triangles. An exuberant and poignant meditation on freedom, loyalty, and the fortitude of love, Jules and Jim was a worldwide smash upon its release in 1962 and remains as audacious and entrancing today.
In French with English subtitles.
WINNER: Best European film Bodil Film Awards
Best Director Mara Del Plata Film Festival
“When François Truffaut was a twenty-three-year-old film critic, in 1955, he read a
first novel by a seventy-four-year-old writer, Henri-Pierre Roché. “The book overwhelmed me,” he later recalled, “and I wrote: If I ever succeed in making films,
I will make Jules and Jim.”-John Powers

CREATIVAS GROUP PUBLIC RELATIONS BRINGS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND SOCIAL NETWORKING EVENT CONNECTIONS & COCKTAILS

(Miami, FL) May 26, 2009—Creativas Group Public Relations is ready to bring back South Florida’s premier professionals networking event to the River Lounge located in the Epic Hotel. The Connections & Cocktails networking event brings South Florida’s top professionals together to improve their business and community. Connections & Cocktails was a concept created to bring decision-makers together in a casual and socially driven environment, as opposed to what many consider “typical” and costly networking events. Co-hosted by Can I have your Attention Advertising and Marketing, One Source Branding, and 880AM The Biz the May Connections & Cocktails event plans to be the most successful one up to date.

Creativas Group Public Relations headed by Liza Santana and Gabriel Pineres came up with the concept after attending various networking events around town. Usually they were found to be affairs where members would have to pay a high membership fee and/or pay a substantial amount to attend each event in a delicate economy. Connections & Cocktails was planned to be a completely different animal and has thrived ever since its launch date over 2 years ago. The concept is simple; bring together a group of active, affluent professionals for a social event at a high-end venue featuring complimentary featured cocktails. There is absolutely no cost for guests to be part of Connections & Cocktails. It’s no wonder guests love this event, the casual nature of this affair takes off the pressure to meet, greet, and make contacts found at other networkers and “mixers.” Connections & Cocktails started out as a small event with an attendance of about 40 guests. Today the event attracts between 300 to 400 guests solid.

This month’s Connections & Cocktail is brought to the River Lounge. Located in the Epic Hotel River Lounge is considered Down Town Miami’s newest hot spot. With a gorgeous view of the Miami River this venue features two stories of architectural brilliance. Guests will enter the River Lounge and enjoy the company of South Florida’s movers and shakers while sipping on complimentary rum cocktails provided by Barceló Rum which was awarded the title of best rum in the world by the Chicago taste institute two years in a row. Feature sponsor Adimation Imaging Solutions will be on hand to show case their unique and eye catching printing services. Adimation has provided printing solutions to global companies such as Bacardi and Budweiser. Cigar Snob magazine which caters to the business person who loves nothing more than to have a great cigar after a long days work will be on hand to showcase this month’s current issue. Every event produced by Creativas Group, highlights a featured charity partner. For this event, it will be The National Kidney Foundation of Florida. Event Co-host 880AM The Biz, will feature a live radio broadcast of the popular The VIP show starring on air personalities Tony Calatayud and Jorge Guevara. For more information on 880AM and The VIP show, please go to www.880thebiz.com.

“A Penetrable such as this one in Wynwood opens up a new experience of an aesthetic nature because it deals with moving space. Whether it is us, or the wind blowing that provokes it, the visual and imaginary reality it offers us is like an illuminating path, or Tao. How this illumination is produced depends on the willingness of whoever agrees to experience it. But what we do not doubt is that the challenge he throws at us to change our pre-conceived opinions regarding reality, is sufficient to encourage us to travel the path proposed by him.
Whoever experiences the sensation of finding him / herself within a living object such as Soto’s Penetrables, would then understand the intimate meaning of his work’s poetic structure. Those vibrant rods—all blue, in this case—reveal to us a reality that we forget but which exists deep in our traditional culture, as expressed by the Egyptian and the Greek: nothing is static, life is movement. “ Carlos M. Luis.

Future Shock!
The Black Mangrove Collective
From May 29th through 30th, 2009.
The Black Mangrove Collective presents Future Shock; a two-day only art exhibit with an opening reception on Friday, May 29th from 8-11pm. In a world caught in a perpetual state of flux, all the more felt by the dominance of communication technologies, Future Shock explores the work of twelve diverse artists who examine the effects of rapid technological, political, and social change in our society. The title is a reference to a book written by the futurist Alvin Toffler in 1970. Themes of transience, identity, memory, communication, originality, and spirituality are explored as well as how people adapt to the pace of change at the dawn of the 21st century. The artwork in Future Shock raises fundamental questions about the impact that technology has on our experience of contemporary life. Artists present this through a variety of mediums including video, interactive installations, decollages, mixed media, sculpture, and photography. Featured artists include Orlando Estrada, Kiwi Farah, Samuel Gualtieri, The Human Observation Society, Cristina Molina, Federico Nessi, Roxy Ramos, Rosemarie Romero, Nancy Trevino, TV, Kacey Westall Keogh, and Melissa Wallen.

“Hanno ammazzatu compare Turiddu” (Turiddu has been killed). With this dramatic phrase, concludes the story of popular chivalry tradition in the old Sicily of the 19th Century. Love, jealousy and infidelity create the drama that ends in a death among friends. The story of Giovanni Vega attracted Mascagni theatrical intuition to create one of the most popular opera of the Italian repertoire, Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry).
Come and listen to the most beautiful and dramatic melodies with its famous “Intermezzo” great arias and duets and the choral with popular mystic songs that villagers sing to nature and Holiness.
The selection of a dual opera program with Cavalleria and Suor Angelica will provide our public with two extraordinary works from Mascagni and Puccini very close to the hearts of the opera lovers. Traditionally I Pagliacci combines with Cavalleria on the same performance but we felt that Suor Angelica would add freshness and emotion to a dramatic evening experience.
Meet some of the Cavalleria’s Artists
Veronica Murua (Santuzza). Young Mexican Soprano who makes her first appearance with MLO. She has performed the role in Mexico with great success.
Francesco Valpa (Turiddu). Francesco is an Italian tenor well remembered by our public for his remarkable performance of the same role in 2004 receiving enthusiastic reviews by the Miami Herald. He also sung with MLO La Boheme as the poet Rodolfo with great success.
Kevin Misslich (Alfio). Mr. Misslich makes his debut with MLO in the role of Alfio. He is a talented baritone having performed in different opera houses around the nation.

At CCEMiami. Free Admission
800 S Douglas Rd. Suite 170. Coral Gables, FL 33134
“The Tulse Luper Suitcases” is a trilogy of 120-minute feature films covering 16 episodes in the life of Tulse Luper, a “professional” prisoner. Featuring sixteen prisons, the trilogy reconstructs the story of his life from the evidence of 92 suitcases found around the world between 1928 and 1989.
Imprisoned for as many reasons as are conceivable, including the real and imagined crimes of lust, espionage, greed, love, wrongful impersonation, embezzlement, murder, political ambition and ambition itself, Tulse Luper makes being prisoner into an art. The story covers sixty years of history, from the anniversary of the discovery of Uranium (1928) to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Bass Museum of Art Lecture – Things Looked Different Back Then: The Endless Renaissance and How All Art is Contemporary 5/28/09

Lecture – Things Looked Different Back Then: The Endless Renaissance and How All Art is Contemporary
Thursday, May 28th, 7:00pm
Visual experience, it turns out, has evolved over time. This means that we cannot think of art as a single ‘problem’ expressed to better and worse degrees in different times and places – instead, we need to see that the Renaissance is truly endless, with constant re-discoveries of “new ways of seeing.”
This lecture will introduce key aspects of the visual culture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods as a means of thinking differently about how contemporary art and art of the Renaissance have more in common than meets the eye.
Guest curator Steven Holmes has curated exhibitions for The Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Kunste-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, as well as exhibitions throughout the United States and the Caribbean. His projects have been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine, Art in America, Art Forum, Art News, Tema Celeste, Flash Art International and Art New England. His most recent book, Festschrift, was published by Leo Press in 2008. Mr. Holmes holds a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and a MTS from Harvard.
Free with museum admission. Come early and view the exhibition! Galleries will stay open until 7pm.

The most buzzed about salon Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique is open to the public starting Tuesday 5/26/09

Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique will bring a breath of fresh air
to Miami Beachs’15th street on May 26th, 2009.
primp_logo_final
The once line of tattoo parlors and closed businesses that shaped 15th street will transform to a new look and feel with the opening of Primp Salon & Hair Extension Boutique in June 2009. The temporary purple window coverings warm the street while owner, Jonathan Babicka, adds the final touches inside. Primp Salon’s deep purple walls, antique tin ceiling, stunning chandeliers, and golden mirrors create a sense of elegance and comfort contrary to the common hair salon décor.

Within the boutique salon, guests will receive personal attention in one of the four lavish stations. Primp Salon is a full service hair salon for men and women that offers precision cuts, one process color or retouch, high-lighting/ low-lighting, Brazilian relaxing/ straightening, conditioning treatments, blow outs, and styling. Pricing at Primp Salon is set to be affordable so that guests can enjoy the experience that they deserve even in today’s economy. Another added value of this South Beach hair salon is the complimentary valet.

In addition to the décor, Primp Salon differs from the average salon by offering same day hair extensions. In master Polish filmmaker Andrej Wajda’s most important and highly anticipated new film, a story of Polish officers murdered by the NKVD in KatyÅ„ during World War II. It is a picture of women unaware of the crime, who were waiting for their husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers; an uncompromising reckoning with the lie of the communist powers, that was to order Poland to forget those who were killed by Stalin’s secret police. It is a film about the invincible struggle for memory and truth.

The Class
(Directed by Laurent Cantet/France/2008)
With François Bégaudeau, Nassim Amrabt, Laura Bacuela, Juliette Damaille
François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighborhood. Armed with the best intentions, they brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. As amusing and inspiring as the teenaged students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeapordize any teacher’s enthusiasm for the low-paying job. François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods…
In French with English subtitles.
WINNER: Cannes Film Festival Palm d’Or
“The Class ranks with the very best films ever made about teaching, and it’s unlike any English or American film about teaching ever made.”-The Baltimore Sun

Nic Fanciulli at Mokai 5/28/09

nicfrontpage400
This invitation was sent by Biz Martinez.
Anyone who’s spent a minute clubbing or blogging in the world of dance knows the name Nic Fanciulli (UK). It’s difficult to overlook his resume since breaking thru in 2003. As a label boss, he runs Saved Records along side studio mate Andy Chatterley… you know Skylark, Buick Project?! As a Producer/Remixer extraordinaire, he’s gone on to rework the likes of Deep Dish, Tiefschwarz, Steve Lawler, Underworld, X-Press 2, etc, etc… and as a Dj, he’s considered “royalty”; earning the label “King of the Space Ibiza Terrace” among other residencies at some of the planet’s finest clubs.

His Latest release: The Global Underground CD… the 2 disc compilation showcases Nic’s range as he glides & slices thru genres of Electronic Dance Muse. In disc 1, Nic seamlessly transistions from Metro Area’s electric-disco-funk into the Detroit techno of DJ Rolando. Disc 2 is a ride via Nic’s record bag, sprinkled with Fanciulli originals & a remix of Dubfire’s “Emissions”. Properly pieced & programmed for the dancefloor, going from house to minimal to Detroit Techno. Visit http://www.globalunderground.co.uk or sample & buy it on iTunes now.

See Nic Fanciulli live @ Mokai Thurs.May.28th along side Front Page resident Louis Dee.

Alliance Française Thursday, June 4th, 2009. 6:00 p.m.
Cremata Gallery and Alliance Française, are pleased to present “Towards Paris!” a panoramic view of Cuban artists that at different times or due to different circumstances have called Paris home. The title comes from the answer given by Eduardo Abela to the question “…where, then, should I direct my steps?” The reply was not difficult, according to Abela: “Towards Paris!” He added, “everyone knows that since the beginning of the XIX Century French painting is the most important in the world.”
Cremata Gallery proposed the idea to Miami’s Alliance Française which immediately accepted the challenge. A working bond was created between Raul Cremata and Philippe Timon director of the Alliance. They joined efforts to advance this venture and offer their respective spaces to allow this unique narrative to unfold. A rich and varied compilation of paintings and sculptures includes works by Cuban leading artists of the last two centuries. Cremata Gallery is proud to present this distinguished selection of works for “Towards Paris!” entirely for sale.
In conjunction with the exhibit, we are offering two lectures with Aldo Menendez art critic, painter and curator of the show, and Carlos M. Luis poet and art critic, who has been intimately connected with French culture for many years.
Among the subjects to be discussed are the influence of France in Cuban art, how the French’s artistic vision leaves its mark on XIX Century art in the island, the specific weight of “Breton’s surrealism” on our avant-garde and post avant-garde, Paris like the Mecca, where many of Cuba’s most important works art have been produced.

Photographs – Rum Renaissance Bacardi VIP Party

{The Rum Renaissance Festival is probably one of the best ideas I have ever seen! Instead of throwing some other kind of event and trying to get alcohol sponsors, just throw an alcohol event! You are sure to get plenty of free alcohol. Last night was a great example of this. Held at the private Bacardi Museum, there was, of course, all the Bacardi you could possibly guzzle in 3 hours, including some types that you cannot get here in America. They also catered the reception with really amazing food.I rarely recommend anything directly, but the Rum Renaissance, I highly recommend. The Grand Tasting starts in a few hours from when I am posting this, 2p-6pm Saturday, May 16th. Go go go! There are still several VIP parties left, so I recommend the VIP pass.}
