Invitation to a Relay event this Friday 4/24/09

Can you please forward this to all your friends? This is for a Relay in West Kendall, is this Friday.

Check it out, the committee is made of about a dozen High School Kids (I worked with them) they have worked really really hard for the past six months on this event (even when they have final exams & fcats soon and they are doing an amazing job with this event).

I want to invite people to go and support them. Walk a lap with them and check out the Luminaria Ceremony (there they’ll light candles for those that lost their fight and those that survived this decease) and show them how important is to help out in the community and to support each other.

Why do I Relay?
I participate in Relay For Life because i have lost my grandfather in December 2008 from brain cancer after fighting other types of cancers for 6 years.
I relay because family friends were not able to fight the battle.
I relay because i don’t want to lose anymore loved ones.
I relay because i have friends who have lost loved ones.
I relay because i have friends with family who are currently battling cancer.
I relay because i know people who are currently fighting cancer.
I relay because i want to find the cure.
I relay because i care.
I relay because i am tired of having cancer take over innocent lives.
I relay because i need to spread the word.

We, the lakes of the meadow committee, relay because we want to play our part in fighting cancer, we want to make an event where we can promote awareness.

In the U.S men have a slightly less than a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer: for women, the risk is a little more than 1 in 3. An average of 1.4 million people are diagnosed with cancer YEARLY, and statistics raise yearly. Florida is the second state with the largest amount of people diagnosed with cancer, at about 106,560 people yearly. so please come out to: LAKES OF THE MEADOW RELAY FOR LIFE !
located at 4450 S.W. 152 AVENUE (Bird & 152 Ave – Lakes of the Meadow Club House)
on APRIL 24TH – 25TH from 6PM TO 6AM
Overnight events symbolize:
-Cancer Never Stops.
-When a person is diagnosed with Cancer, their world crashes, it turns dark.
But then they find hope, which is when the sunrises.
The event is very symbolic, and surprisingly enough, very actively fun.
Please don’t hesitate to ask me or the LOTM committee any questions.
Visit our website: www.relayforlife.org/lakesofthemeadowfl
Join a team, create a team, donate or sign up as a volunteer and attend the event.
Participate for those you’ve lost to cancer, Participate because you care.
Please & Thank you,
-Bibiana Potestad
Team Development Chair and a Volunteer helping FIGHT Cancer.

BOARD UP™ is an action sports and entertainment event created by Miami Sports International (MSI) since 2006. BOARD UP™ was designed for television and to provide a festival atmosphere for spectators of all ages. BOARD UP™ got its start in Miami , known as the gateway to Latin America, and home to a multi-cultural community that features Hispanic Americans, the nation’s largest minority group; Miami is also a sports, fashion and entertainment breeding ground, and it is the ideal destination to host BOARD UP™. BOARD UP™ will be visiting a city near you soon.

MSI has prepared an innovative event for the action sport industry, and will add a concert act as a sideshow to the wakeboard Pro-Am. The event will be fully sanctioned by the USA Wakeboard Association, the sport’s governing body. An amateur tournament is offered in order to provide an unparalleled opportunity for the sport to continue to grow. Kyle Crossland

Kyle CrosslandÕs music has recently been drawing the attention of students from the University of Miami. As a student singer-songwriter from the university, KyleÕs acoustic-rock style has been compared to that of John Mayer and Jack Johnson. His energetic performances and catchy up-beat songs are almost magnetic to whoever happens to be listening. From a young age, Kyle knew that somehow his life needed to incorporate music. He has been singing for as long as he can remember, and growing-up he idolized artists like James Taylor and the Beach Boys. His love for singing brought him to Dr. Phiillips a Magnet High School which focused on choral studies. It was in his junior year of high school when Kyle first picked up a guitar and started writing songs.

The KeyRats, Key Biscayne`s finest
On December 31, 2003, The Keyrats had been commissioned to play for a crowd approaching 1,000 people from the balcony of a Key Biscayne residence overlooking the Miami bay. The performance was a success, and shortly thereafter The Keyrats began receiving phone calls from local promoters interested in booking the band. Since then, The Keyrats have played at multiple popular venues in Miami including Oxygen Lounge, Bolero, Honey, Bayside Hut, Transit Lounge, Flavour, Grove Isle, CefaloÕs and the University of Miami. Other notable venues include Jewells, Boardwalk Tavern, B.E.D., and MiamiÕs Mega Club, Mansion. The Keyrats have evolved into a dynamic four piece band consisting of drums, bass, guitars and two vocalists. On some nights they even feature special guests on the keyboard, timbales, saxophone, and a trombone/Trumpet horn section.

You better check their website for more information

Third time was the charm for North Carolina native Adam Fields at Board Up™ Miami, South Florida’s premiere wakeboard festival April 23-25, 2009 in Miami, FL. In a mild upset with an exciting finish, amid mildly windy condition, Fields bested the final field of 10 professional and amateur riders to win the men’s crown at the fourth annual wakeboard festival. Over 60 amateur riders entered the pro-am competition itching for a chance to take on nearly 20 pro men and women wakeboarders and a chance at a combined prize purse of over $10,000.

An international group of riders that featured three Aussies and two Kiwis (from New Zealand) provided excitement from the preliminaries, including Daniel Watkins, who finished fourth, but closed out his opening round ride with a rail slide along the starting dock, and move that wasn’t scored, but certainly thrilled the crowd.

A crowd of 4,000 witnessed the final runs on both the pro men and pro women side, with the final results featuring Adam Fields as champion in his third appearance at the event defeating Dean Smith (2nd overall), and Jeff Weatherall (3rd overall). On the women’s side, as was expected, it was a case of sibling rivalry, just like tennis has the Williams’ sisters consistently vying for titles, wakeboarding has the Hoffman’s, and at this year’s Board Up™ Miami, big sister Raequel still had a few more tricks than her younger sibling Shawna who finished . Tennessee native Corrie Dyer finished 3rd.

Inclusive of this year’s festival was a nearly 4,000 square foot skate park that featured the Assailant and Amaxon Clothing best trick contest where Miami local D’Andre Pendergrass took home the $500 cash prize.

The festival atmosphere was in full effect with live musical performances by Kyle Crossland, The Key Rats, Streetkind, and headliner Araka, all of whom rocked the crowd. There was certainly some dazzle with two swim suit fashion shows that featured the girls from The House of Jackie Brown, and the girls of microkitten.com, me-ow!

For the participant sporting event enthusiast, Saturday morning kicked off the day with the Nike Swim Miami, an open water swimming competition that had over 700 athletes competing in a 10K (the swim marathon), 5K, and mile swim that saw among others, multiple time USA Olympian and 8-time Olympic medalist Gary Hall Jr compete in the mile. Israeli National Team Member, Michael Demetriev was the overall 10K swim champion in a blazing time of 2 hours and 2 minutes.

For additional information and complete results visit the event website @ www.boardup.net (for wakeboarding) and www.miamisportsinternational.com (for the open water swim)

ART / ARTE
Cremata Gallery
The gallery presents an exhibition by artist Juan “Erman” Gonzalez, (Cuba, 1956) titled “Paraiso Fabricado”. A multi media artist whose series based, theme driven works are rooted in migration and informed by family. There is no celebration of freedom or The American Dream inherent in the forms. Instead, there’s an intentional study to analyze history, displacement, and trans- culture resulting from exile. The process is utilitarian and akin to traditional art forms like sewing and object making. Erman operates from a different ethos comparable to techniques of collage and assemblage long thought to echo and materialize remembrance. His works form part of the permanent collection of the Miami Art Museum and many private collections such as Carl and Toni Randolph’s and Craig Robbins’. He has been the invited guest lecturer of Edna Manley College in Jamaica, FIT in NYC and Colorado State University among others. Erman’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the Caribbean, Brazil and nationally, most recently at Lincoln Center in Colorado and Arteamericas in Miami Beach. Come to the gallery on Viernes Culturales to have a glass of wine, see his latest work and meet the artist. Exhibition runs through May 16th. Conde Naste Traveller online: Miami goes Cuckoo for CuCu:
” As if you ever needed an excuse to head to Miami. Well, just in case, you’ll have the perfect pretext tomorrow when a handful of groovy international artists pops into town for the Heineken Transatlantic Festival. The three-week extravaganza culminates on April 25 with maybe the oddest, and coolest, double bill I’ve ever heard of: The acclaimed, berobed-and-turbaned Tuareg band Tinariwen from Mali and vampy Cuban firecracker Cucu Diamantes. Longtime front woman for the funky Latin urban collective Yerba Buena, CuCu just released her debut solo album Cuculand. She owned downtown New York at her recent launch party at the Bowery Ballroom, a carnivalesque affair complete with contortionists, a midget emcee, and a bold brass section.

Visit CuCu Diamantes online
CuCu Diamanates’s solo project, with legendary producer, composer and musician Andres Levin on guitar, builds on the sound of Yerba Buena, the band that redefined Latin Groove. The New York Times hailed the group as “one of New York’s best new dance bands, mixing up the Latin boogaloo of the 60’s, Cuban religious music, some American soul and Fela-like Afrobeat.” CuCu brings similar energy to her new solo project, combing jazz savvy and vintage glamour with the sly grit of New York, a touch of cabaret, and the pulse of Afro-Cuban beats.

Visit Tinariwen online
“Tinariwen capture …Keith Richards, Ry Cooder and Ali Farka Toure picking side by side under an unforgiving sun.” – Rolling Stone. “The Clash of the desert,” Tinariwen are nomadic Touareg guitar-poets from Mali’s southern Sahara. Their music carries the message of freedom and resistance among their people, and formed the soundtrack to the 1990 Touareg rebellions in Mali and Niger. Their sound is traditional tribal melodies transposed to electric guitar, mixed with blues, rock, pop, Berber and Arabic influences – a modern desert rock. Tinariwen have won countless awards for Best CD of the Year in polls around the world and a prestigious BBC Award for World Music. They also co-founded the seminal Festival in the Desert in 2001 in Timbuktu. They are visiting Miami Beach after Coachella Festival.

See you there!

The Orange Bowl Keith Tribble Trailblazer Award honors an individual who has made a significant impact in South Florida. Shannon was named head football coach of the University of Miami on December 8, 2006. A native of Miami, Shannon, played at Norland High School before moving on to the University of Miami where he was a four-year letterman and starting outside linebacker on the 1987 national championship team. SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS
On June 27, 2007, 23-year-old Captain Barrington Irving, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica and brought up in inner-city Miami, secured his place in history as the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the globe.
On his 97-day journey, he flew 30,000 miles in a single-engine aircraft called Inspiration, encountering thunderstorms,
snow storms, icing, sand storms and monsoons along the way. His purpose in making the trip was to show other youth that if he could achieve his dream, they can too. In February, 2007 on Capitol Hill, Barrington was presented with a Congressional Resolution honoring his achievement and acknowledging his pioneering work in the field of aviation education. Two months later, the Florida State Senate awarded him their highest honor, the Medallion of Excellence.

Christopher L. “Chris” Smith was elected to the Florida Senate in 2008, for District 29 which encompasses a variety of cities spanning Broward and Palm Beach counties. Previously, he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives for District 93 in Broward from 1998-2006, including serving as the Democratic House leader form 2004-2006. He led the charge to reform the elections process in Florida after the Election of 2000. He helped author the election reform bill that is now law in Florida and is being used as a model nationwide. A native of Ft. Lauderdale, Chris was appointed as the youngest member of the City’s Planning Zoning Board in 1995, the same year he received his J.D. degree from Florida State. He spent his formative years actively involved in many youth organizations including the Fort Lauderdale Branch of the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Youth Council, ascending to the position of president.

Clarence E. Anthony, a native Floridian, served as Mayor of South Bay, Florida, from 1984 to March 2008. He is known as a creative and thoughtful leader in his community, and has been on the forefront of politics in Florida and the nation for the past 24 years, culminating with very productive presidencies of the Florida League of Cities and the National League of Cities, respectively. Mr. Anthony is presently the Chief Marketing Officer and Presiding Director of the Board of Directors for Post Buckley Schuh & Jernigan, Inc He earned his B.A. in Criminal Justice and Master of Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University. He has served as director of the Office of Equal Opportunity for the Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners and the Board of Directors for Correctional Properties Trust from 1998 – 2007. He is presently a director for the National Conference of Black Mayors, is a member of the Leadership Florida Board of Trustees, and a board member for the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.

“Everything is in place for one of the more successful, star-studded and meritorious group of honorees since the Field of Dreams began. This promises to be one of the premiere events of the season. Now part of the Orange Bowl Committee’s 75 year legacy, our Field of Dreams offers a can’t miss night of entertainment, recognition and the generous spirit of South Florida,” comments Antonia “Toni” Williams-Gary, Co Chair of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Orange Bowl Field of Dreams Committee.

The Field of Dreams Scholarship Benefit is an annual Orange Bowl Committee event with a purpose of providing college scholarship funding for deserving high school seniors. The program has awarded individual scholarships, and contributed over $300,000 for African-American scholarships to organizations such as the Tom Joyner Foundation, The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, Florida Memorial University’s Athletic Scholarship Fund and the UNCF.

Next Friday MiamiBusiness.com Conference 4/24/09

April 24th, 2009, 7:15am – 9:00am

It’s that time again where all the b2b groups meet once a month at Nova Southeastern University in Kendall. This month’s event is sponsored by Eddie Rivero, Chaplain for the Miami-Dade Police Department. Our special guest speaker is Ricardo Forbes from Baptist Health South Florida.

What is MiamiBusiness.com?
Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. Author: Eleanor Roosevelt

Great minds discuss ideas! That is what Miami Business.com is all about. The B2B group concept is a vibrant group of seasoned professionals and innovative thinkers, composed of a few select members in the Miami-Dade County area. While only one person per business category can join per city, it will eventually encourage one to build closer business relationships within our network.
We have a simple formula! Every member will share their ideas and vision from their perspective industries on a weekly basis. Each member will have a chance to interact and share opinions as well. Our city wide business groups will meet once a week to collaborate and share ideas enhancing our knowledge in the different fields .This weekly process will naturally increase the ability to conduct business with each other.

Once a month, all the B2B members from all the cities combine to form MiamiBusiness.com. This monthly conference is very energetic, since all the members get to share their “Tip of the Month”. This event gives us the true meaning of “Sharing Ideas”!

If you feel that you are a “Forward Thinking” individual, someone that is visionary and entrepreneurial, a mover and shaker in the Miami area, then you would benefit from being a part of this exclusive group.

We have several cities already in motion and several are currently brewing up. This year we will be offering the charter rate of $150 to join, while in 2010, the rate will increase.

After show party with DJ Da Lua (Bossacucanova) at Boteco

The Budos Band are an 11-member big band, a majestic sonic groove of Afrobeat, Ethiopian jazz, funk and 1960s Stax-era soul. The core of the band met as youths while participating in an after-school jazz ensemble in Staten Island. Late night ferry rides into Manhatta, led to the back door of the No Moore Club downtown, packed with James Brown fanatics and Fela Kuti disciples. They fell hard for bands like Antibalas, the Sugarman Three, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and knew this was their new musical direction. After meeting resistance from the band director, they recruited a few more horn players and formed their own band. With the 2005 release of their self-titled debut album, the Budos Band officially joined the ranks of the Daptone Family and began to perform frequently as part of the Daptone Soul Revue, alongside the very acts that had inspired them only a few years before.

Javier Garcia creates “a musical narrative for Miami as sweet as kissing your honey on the beach to a swaying reggae beat, as danceable as a 3 a.m. Cuban jam session.” Born in Spain to a Cuban father and an Irish mother, Javier started playing the guitar at 12 years old. The Franciscan headmaster at his high school in Ireland told him that although he loved hearing his music in the school halls, he would be better suited in another school. So he moved with his father in Miami and fully delved into Cuban Miami music and life. His first CD achieved gold sales and set up young Javier as a Latin pop star. But he delved more into music roots, and began to work with top collaborators on a follow-up, finding greater musical freedom and maturity: multi-Grammy award winning producer Gustavo Santaolalla, drummer Abe Laboriel Jr (from Paul McCartney’s band), living batá treasure Francisco Aguabella and others. His sound is a diverse fusion of Cuban music with rock, hip-hop, ska, funk, reggae, anchored by his talents as a composer, arrange, guitar and percussion player and gifted singer.

DJ Marcelino Da Lua is one third of the ground-breaking Rio de Janeiro-based team Bossacucanova. Second-generation bossa novans, they have taken the iconic music of their fathers and made it new yet again with the addition of breakbeats and electronica. As a DJ, Da Lua lets loose with a mix of Brazilan, hiphop, reggae and electic sounds. The After Show party at Boteco is free and open to the public.

Film Synopsis
Lucia Puenzo quickly made a name for herself with her debut film XXY, a haunting and beautiful story about an intersex boy finding his way through adolescence and a society that doesn’t understand him, and finding love and affection along the way.

In her newest film El Niño Pez (The Fish Child), Puenzo proves she is no one hit wonder as she delivers a film that is a sexy and captivating romantic thriller, set in the world of outdated class systems and rampant political corruption in modern day Argentina.

Lala is the daughter of a wealthy and powerful judge in Buenos Aires. Ailin is the family’s maid, whom Lala has harbored feelings for since her early youth. Their friendship soon develops into a torrid and secret affair, and they develop plans to leave the Argentinean capital for Ailin’s native Paraguay. When Lala’s father suddenly dies, Ailin becomes the primary suspect and is imprisoned for the crime. It is now up to Lala to free her lover if their dream is to become a reality. What follows is a story of suspense, intrigue, and determination.

Featuring an amazing cast, helmed by the beautiful and talented Ines Efron and Mariela Vitale, El Niño Pez is an engaging thriller that is undoubtedly the year?s most powerful lesbian film. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Miami Theatrical Premiere!
Wendy and Lucy
Directed by Kelly Reichardt/USA/2009
With Michelle Williams
wendyandlucyposter
Wendy Carroll is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska, in hopes of a summer of lucrative work at the Northwestern Fish cannery, and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions, with far-ranging repercussions for herself and Lucy. Wendy and Lucy addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people’s duty to each other in tough time.
“A PITCH PERFECT TRIUMPH!—Manohla Dargis, New York Times
“What may emerge as THE BEST PERFORMANCE of the YEAR!”—Film Comment
“What will happen to her? The strength of this short, simple, perfect story of a young woman and her dog is that this does not seem, by the end, to be an idle or trivial question. What happens to Wendy — and to Lucy — matters a lot, which is to say that Wendy and Lucy, for all its modesty, matters a lot too.”–A.O. Scott New York Times

Examined Life
Examined Life pulls philosophy out of academic journals and classrooms, and puts it back on the streets…
Directed by Astra Taylor/Canada/2009
Featuring Cornel West, Peter Singer, Kwarne Anthony Appiah, Michael Hardt, Slavoj Zizek, Judith Butler and Sunaura Taylor
examinedlifeposter
In Examined Life, filmmaker Astra Taylor accompanies some of today’s most influential thinkers on a series of unique excursions through places and spaces that hold particular resonance for them and their ideas. Slavoj Zizek questions current beliefs about the environment while sifting through a garbage dump. Judith Butler and a friend stroll through San Francisco’s Mission District questioning our culture’s fixation on individualism. And while driving through Manhattan, Cornel West—perhaps America’s best-known public intellectual—compares philosophy to jazz and blues, reminding us how intense and invigorating a life of the mind can be. Offering privileged moments with great thinkers, Examined Life reveals philosophy’s power to transform the way we see the world around us and imagine our place in it.

CS Gallery is proud to announce the opening of “STABBING HATE,” their new SOLO exhibition by visual artist R. E. SANCHEZ. This exhibition focuses on two series of work created between 2005 and 2007. The first series titled Stabbed In The Back: “Has Never Been In Love” Series details works created on paper and mixed media based on ideas of first introductions, loss of love, façades, the unknown and the presented vs. reality. These artworks in many aspects are very general statements about contemporary society.

The second series titled Terrorism Is A Friendly Reminder Of How Much We All Love Each Other: is created using the maps of some of the countries that have been victims of contemporary terrorist attacks. Black wax and blood red acrylic are very significant for they represent chaos, turmoil and the bloodshed caused by these attacks. These works call to question the ability of humans to interact and understand each other on multiple levels.

R. E. SANCHEZ is a Miami-based artist whose work has been exhibited regularly in non-profit organizations and gallery venues. He is a Salvadoran expatriate who in 1989 relocated to the U.S. to pursue his passion for art. He received his Bachelor of Art (BFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. He is the current Art Director for Life Is Art, a non-profit organization dedicated to promote and support the artistic and creative communities in Miami and beyond.

Since 1994 he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In 2000 he was part of a very prestigious show for Artlink@Sothebys that traveled through Chicago Illinois, Vienna Austria and Tel Aviv Israel.

Most recently his work has been exhibited as part of juried shows which have included The Hibiscus 1st Juried Art Exhibition at The Lighthouse Center for the Arts in Tequesta Florida, 20 x 20 x 20 A National Compact Competition at Louisiana State University’s Union Art Gallery in Baton Rouge Louisiana, The Blanche Ames National Juried Exhibition at The Ames Mansion at Borderland State Park in North Easton Massachusetts and Field of Vision: Beijing at the Beijing New Art Projects in Beijing China. His work can be found in many private collections.

river

The grand opening of River Lounge this April 23, 2009 will solidify it as THE venue for the patron who appreciates style, art, design, fashion, and South Florida’s amazing cultural mix. With all of the elements that would exemplify a Miami hotspot, River Lounge is “bringing classy back”. Located in the Epic Hotel and Residences in Downtown, River Lounge represents what the outgoing professional deserves.

River Lounge is geared to be the pinnacle of Miami Downtown nightlife, ideally situated on the Miami River with a breathtaking view. Designed by nationally renowned Telesco & Associates, the über chic lounge boasts majestic 30ft ceilings, LED lighting, circular bar, flat screen TVs, custom lighting fixtures and custom lounge furniture. The second floor features a more intimate setting. One of the elements that set River Lounge apart is that guests have the option of arriving either by car or boat. The outdoor terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy cocktails, while gazing at the panoramic view of the river, lined by some of Miami’s most impressive high-rises.

Co hosted by Ocean Drive Magazine the grand opening of River Lounge plans to be a spectacular affair that will leave guests dazzled as River Lounge is ramping up to be Downtown Miami’s go to spot. Guests at the River Lounge grand opening sponsored by Patron Tequila, Johnny Walker Black, and Ultra Vodka can expect an evening filled with VIPs, cocktails, and music by DJ Walter Capote. The evening will include a formal ribbon cutting ceremony including Mayor Manny Diaz, celebrities including: Adriana Catano, Nicolas Felizola, Liset Alea, Carlos A. Navarro, Natalia de La Cruz, Tito Puente Jr, Karol Rosa, Jorge Moreno and many more. River Lounge plans to take the Miami nightlife scene by storm. The brainchild of Sunset Entertainment Group’s dynamic duo Chris Breed and Michael Gruber, it’s no doubt that River Lounge will be one of Miami’s A-list favorites. The gentlemen have been recognized for such successful and legendary venues as The Tropicana and Teddy’s at the Roosevelt Hotel, Cabana Club, Sterling Steakhouse, Green Door, and the White Lotus to name a few. Breed, who was called the “King of Hollywood” by the Los Angeles Times, came into the scene in 1990, when he opened the Roxbury Supper Club. The venture has been credited with sparking the “Renaissance of Hollywood”. Collectively, Breed and Gruber (who has an extensive history representing some of the world’s biggest stars), bring to Miami their expertise dealing with high-end clientele and celebs from all over the map, topped with a dose of “Big Apple” flare. This unique combination will make this venue stand out as a classy one.

River Lounge will feature a unique cocktail list including a one-of-a kind signature martini list. Complete with delicious bites, great music, surrounded by beauty, River Lounge will set a new standard in Miami. Invitation -Safespace’s Mothers Day 5/6/09

safe-space-v2

Safespace is an organization that assists victims of domestic violence. If you can attend the event or contribute items for the auction or if you can e-mail blast this to your contacts, the women, children and men, yes that is right, men, will definitely appreciate any support we can show. It is a topic that is near and dear to several of our hearts and the ultimate question is: how many of you know someone who is or has been abused? Those that are abused, typically do not talk about it and never will bring it up so it can actually be your neighbor or your co-worker. You will be amazed.

I hope to see you there and if you can not make it to the event but can contribute something, please contact Jeannette direct as monetary donations would be appreciated as well.

Thank you Everyone for taking the time to read and review this. Stay well and have a wonderful evening.

MDPL invites you to the opening reception for From Miami With Love 4/17/09

ART DECO GALLERY
Friday 17 April 7:00 pm

OPENING RECEPTION FOR FROM MIAMI WITH LOVE
Some of the earliest pioneers in the rediscovery and renovation of Miami Beach’s Art Deco buildings in the 1980s and 90s were gay artists and designers. Having found inexpensive work and living spaces, they were inspired by the dazzling tropical light and growing diversity of South Beach to create art expressing homoerotic themes.
fmwl_stamp
The exhibition From Miami With Love includes works by some of these local artists, as well as from gay artists worldwide. The exhibit has been organized by the Cultural Center of Spain (CCE), as a part of a traveling contemporary art show entitled Historias de Amor (Love Stories), a selection of more than 50 pieces from Colección Visible, a Spanish foundation that has been working for years in creating a gay-oriented art collection. The foundation’s objective is to create a gay art museum in Spain where works by the most relevant 20th Century artists could be presented, and to highlight the role of homosexuals in contemporary art.

In addition to the exhibit, CCE and Hardcore will offer several parallel activities to the 2009 Miami Beach Gay Pride, including the special preview of the Spanish musical “Tómbola” by Marisol, at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, a Spanish gay film series, and a roundtable for gay activists and experts in contemporary art on the importance of art in the fight for homosexual rights to be held in the Bass Museum.

The exhibit will be open weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm until the end of April. Free admission.

Location: Art Deco Education Center at Historic City Hall, 1130 Washington Av, Miami Beach

The exhibition consists of 57 works by mentally handicapped artists from the U.S., England, Spain, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. The work selection was done by Juan Martin, an outsider art expert and executive director of NAEMI. NAEMI is an international organization dedicated to discovering, promoting and exhibiting work by artists with mental illness.
Many of the exhibiting artists are self-taught and they transmit a personal and intense vision of art. With initiatives such as these, the NAEMI Foundation is looking to educate the public regarding art produced by persons who have or have had mental problems.
As Lyle Rexer, author of the book “How to Look at Outsider Art”, elucidate: “Outsider art, those pieces that resist entering into that invisibility by provokingly producing a confusion in our conceptual categories, may act as an incentive for our esthetic conscience. Look again! It seems to say: Look directly and do not take anything for granted.
National Art Exhibition by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) is a Florida non profit organization which has given art access to mentally ill persons that would have otherwise remained isolated from the contemporary cultural tendency. NAEMI’s objective is discovering, studying, promoting, exposing and also the conservation of this type of art nationwide. With this type of initiative NAEMI is trying to educate the community on outsider art, help eradicate prejudice against mental illnesses and reaffirming the creative capacity of mentally ill patients.

Deon Davis, Author
I’ll Find A Way (A Mother’s Journey of Love and Acceptance for her Gay Son

Recently published book I’ll Find A Way hit the online bookstores and Authorhouse.com February 19, 2009, the book is written by first time author Deon Davis who expressingly shares her journey of raising her gay son throughout her book.

Davis felt the need to put their experience in book form to help not only parents but the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young adults and teenagers. The emotional and physical toll that this deep dark secret took on her son almost destroyed his life but through family, love, self-acceptance and therapy he found a way and now enjoys the best that life has to offer.

Each year we lose our children to suicide, substance abuse or the cruel and lonely streets because of the ignorance so many of us share for the GLBT Community. In writing this book, Author Deon M. Davis dedicates herself to fight for one less suicide, glbt living on the streets, and last but not least, defamation against this beautiful community of human beings.
A proceed from each book sold will be donated to organizations that provide safe havens, counseling and other necessities.

Celebrate the end of a fantastic season with the unbridled romance of Tchaikovsky and the rich talents of MTT and pianist Vladimir Feltsman. Enjoy a lively lyric scene from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin as Conducting Fellow Edward Abrams brings the elegant Polonaise to life. His First Piano Concerto has endlessly been parodied by Liberace stylings, but in the hands of fellow Russian Feltsman, this work is pure genius and beauty. The musical and biographical journey ends with his Fifth Symphony, where MTT navigates through the dense score of incandescent sensibilities and erupting violent outbursts. Frost Spring Openings Challenge the Concept of Art 4/17/09

FIU’s New Frost Art Museum announces Spring Openings That Challenge the Concept of Art

Miami, (April 15, 2009) – The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University announces major spring openings: Because I Say So from The Scholl Collection, Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa, and the Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 6 p.m. at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum located at 10975 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199. The event is free and open to the public. Also on view will be FIU’s BFA student show, Wake.

“The exhibits, although inherently different in all respects, explore and test the limits of creativity,” said Dr. Carol Damian, director & chief curator for The Frost.

In Because I Say So, viewers will note how sculpture in particular has confounded the status-quo, especially when it defies the ordinary association with works of art, or is considered as “installation” art, or as a part of an installation. The pedestals of the past, now long forsaken, are replaced by transformative environments, sometimes entire rooms dedicated to a single artist’s work. The viewer is confounded, confronted, invited, and amazed as one becomes immersed in the space. Works are placed directly on the floor; hung from the ceiling; described in site-specific locations; cantilevered off the walls; defiantly testing notions of scale, and stimulating daring responses. Each artist provides the viewer with a point of departure for an exploration of different levels of the mind and intellect not possible with traditional sculpture or painting.

Major collectors Debra and Dennis Scholl present the often unseen sculpture that is central to their significant contemporary art collection. They describe their process as looking for “work that succeeds both on and below the surface, evoking a strong response, and not necessarily a positive one. “So long as a viewer is engaged enough to give a reaction, either one of pleasure or discomfort, we feel that the work has succeeded”.

Genetic Portraits by Nela Ochoa, a prolific and internationally recognized multi-media artist, offers works in the areas of video art, sculpture, and performance to explore the genetic codes of human bodies. Her interest in the human body has led her to work with medical images such as X-rays and MRI’s, integrating them into videos, paintings and installations. Her most recent work has led her further into the body, where she explores the mysteries of DNA.

The Kenan-Flagler Family Discovery Gallery allows visitors to experience interactive activities designed to educate and entertain. This state-of-the-art Discovery Gallery consists of 13 stations including the computer-based display, Picture Yourself, where a camera takes an image of a person’s face and reproduces it on a touch screen. Participants can then trace the contours of the face with their fingers and print the finished product. The Discovery Gallery will also include a sculpture garden based on the works of the Sculpture Park collection housed on the Florida International University Park Campus; a rubbing station where children can rub images embedded onto a table to make their own print; and a textures station based on works in The Frost Museum’s Permanent Collection.

For details on The Billboard Latin Music Conference, visit: www.billboardevents.com. The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, as determined by the actual sales and radio airplay data that informs Billboard’s weekly charts during a one-year period covering the issue dated February 9, 2008 through this year’s January 31 issue. Finalists, and the eventual winners, reflect performance of new recordings on Billboard’s sales charts, including Top Latin Albums, and radio charts, including Hot Latin Songs, with album categories confined to titles that did not chart before Billboard’s Nov. 10, 2007 issue and excluding finalists from the prior-year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards. Based on sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, radio information monitored by Nielsen BDS and master ringtone sales compiled by Nielsen RingScan, Billboard’s charts are the world’s most authoritative music rankings.

Billboard also presents prestigious discretionary awards including the Spirit of Hope Award and the Hall of Fame Award. Past winners of Billboard discretionary awards include Soraya, Banda El Recodo, Willy Chirino, Gloria Estefan, Vicente Fernandez, Jose Feliciano, Mongo Santamaria, Los Tigres Del Norte, Mana, Ricky Martin, Tito Puente, Olga Tañon, Ricardo Montaner, Miguel Bose, Conjunto Primavera and Juanes.

Every Little Step

Directed by James D. Stern & Adam Del Deo
FLORIDA PREMIERE
Saturday, April 25
9:40PM | Regal 18

In 1974 Broadway darling Michael Bennet gathered a group of stage dancers, affectionately known asgypsies, together and recorded their life stories. It is from those very recordings that the world-widehit musical A Chorus Line was born. For the first time, we are taken back to those confessional sessions and hear excerpts from the actual recordings as the filmmakers follow the creation of the original stage show, and then its recent revival while introducing us to the original cast and creative team and the budding talent who are auditioning.

An obvious choice for musical lovers, Every Little Step is a superbly made film that brings an audience together for a journey that is exhilarating, heartbreaking, and completely unforgettable.

Directors James D. Stern & Adam Del Deo will be in attendance.

ART DECO FILM SERIES
Tuesday 14 April

FILM NOIR CLASSICS
Film noir, a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, often emphasizes moral ambiguity and sexual motivation, derived from the hard-boiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression. Hollywood’s classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s, and films of this genre are associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.

Scarlet Street
Directed by Fritz Lang
USA/1945/101 minutes/B&W
A box-office hit in its day (despite being banned in three states), Scarlet Street is perhaps legendary director Fritz Lang’s (M, Metropolis) finest American film. When middle-aged milquetoast Chris Cross (Edward G. Robinson–Double Indemnity, Little Caesar) rescues street-walking bad girl Kitty (Joan Bennett–The Reckless Moment) from the rain-slicked gutters of an eerily artificial backlot Greenwich Village, he plunges headlong into a whirlpool of lust, larceny and revenge. As Chris’ obsession with the irresistibly vulgar Kitty grows, the meek cashier is seduced, corrupted, humiliated and transformed into an avenging monster before implacable fate and perverse justice triumph in the most satisfyingly downbeat denouement in the history of American film. Free admission.

The Waybacks Star in Bay Jam 15, All Day Music Fest on the Bay

The Waybacks, one of the hottest bands in the country — playing a genre-hopping blend of bluegrass/jamgrass, honky-tonk, swing, classical music, and blues and pop — headline Bay Jam 15, held April 19 in Islamorada Founders Park.
“The Waybacks bring real star power to this year’s Bay Jam and are spectacular live,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “In addition, this event showcases the Keys’ best music with great local bands, is family-friendly, and tops it off by using the proceeds to award thousands of dollars in art and music scholarship to local students.”

Gates open at 11 a.m. for the all-day annual outdoor music fest. With free admission for kids 13 and under, $10 for adults and just $5 for students, Bay Jam is affordable for everyone. A total of 14 bands will play including David Feder and son Nyan, a reunion of the popular Blackwater Sound, and Marley Fest-favorite Baga Tricks.

The Waybacks, from San Francisco, have been described as “purveyors of acoustic mayhem.” The band has produced five albums to date and have a dedicated following. Wherever they play, high praise follows: The Washington Post described band members as “…virtuosos sharing a singular mind-set.” Billboard Magazine said “These guys can play like bandits,” and the San Jose News called them “…geniuses … whose playing stacks up to anything you’ll find.”

Bay Jam has everything needed for day of music and fun in a spectacular setting on the Florida Bay. Surfboards And Skateboards Opening May 5 At World Erotic Art Museum 5/5/09

Gregory De La Haba, Internationally Famed Sculptor Who Created An Art Basel Furor When He Exhibited His Now Legendary Installation, “Equus Erectus: Between Nothingness And Paradise,” To Premier ‘Surfboards And Skateboards’ Opening May 5 At World Erotic Art Museum

Recalled as having been a major sensation when his sculpture of a rearing horse in tumescence scored major international attention during Art Basel 2008, Gregory de la Haba will return to South Florida, Tuesday, May 5 to launch a month long exhibit of his newest works, “Skateboards and Surfboards,” at the World Erotic Art Museum,1205 Washington Avenue.

Long respected as an accomplished draftsman who embraces a conceptual approach to his art, de la Haba’s now famed “Between Nothingness and Paradise” is considered to have been triggered as a young boy through his heritage as the grandson of a wealthy Spanish grandfather who opened the first casinos in Puerto Rico and, alternately, of a poor Irish grandfather who daily patronized the local OTB, creating for de la Haba a persona equal parts devoted to gambling reflected by his ownership of a Saratoga winner’s circle horse, as he was to art.

A cum laude graduate of Harvard University as well as a star pupil at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, de la Haba attended La Universidad del Sacrado Corazon in Santurce, PR, and the Artes Plasticas in San Juan and in rapid succession thereafter, received several awards from the Copley Society which was to lead him to scholarships at the New York Academy of Art, international travels, and ultimately, to a major career as a figurative artist.

Seen through such high profile work as his acclaimed taxidermic equines first unveiled in Miami and now in a solo show at New York’s Jack the Pelican Presents gallery, de la Haba also created the Bacchanalia mural at Atlantic City’s Caesar’s Palace commissioned by John Tunney III. The artist’s latest erotically charged art is a mural project for a bar in Los Angeles commissioned by Sean McPherson, among the owners of New York’s high profile “in” spots, the Bowery Hotel, The Maritime Hotel and the Waverly Inn.

For his show at the World Erotic Art Museum, de la Haba will illustrate yet another side of his artistic persona via a series of eight surfboards using them as “canvases” for his original erotic arts scenes. Additionally, de la Haba will exhibit blow-ups of the famous works which have caused such an international furor.

On opening night, de la Haba and WEAM owner/curator Naomi Wilzig will auction off a surfboard to help fund the Carlos Collazo Scholarship created by de la Haba to honor the memory of the pioneering and gifted Puerto Rican artist who died of AIDS.

The World Erotic Art Museum is located at 1205 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Open from 11 A.M. to midnight, admission is $15 per person, not on under 18 admitted. Information is available at (305) 532-9336 or via www.weam.com.

Tickets and more info

MONUMENTAL is Ros Warby’s latest award-winning solo dance work, developed in collaboration with her long standing artistic team, designer Margie Medlin and composer Helen Mountfort. MONUMENTAL is a richly layered movement piece, continuing to refine Warby’s integration of the solo dance form with 35mm film projection and solo cello. It draws from the iconic symbols of classical ballet, the swan and the soldier, bringing focus to our own sense of strength and dissolution, amidst the often irreconcilable tragedies and the sustaining power of beauty in the world today. The audience is invited to engage, through the solo dancer, with the innocent bird, and the brave, sometimes tainted soldier embedded within us all.
MONUMENTAL, received the Age Critics Commendation Award, the Robert Helpmann Award for Best Female Dancer, the Greenroom Award for Best Female Performer and the Greenroom Award for Best Composition. It also received Greenroom nominations for Best design, Best Choreography and Original Concept and Realisation, and a Helpmann nomination for Best New Dance Work.

Opening Night Gala Film
Patrik, Age 1.5
East Coast Premiere
Gusman Theatre
April 24, 2009 7:30PM
This will be the official kick off to the 11th season of the MGLFF line up. One of the funniest and entertaining movies of the year, by acclaimed Swedish Director and Screen Writer, Ella Lemhagen of Immediate Boarding (2003) and If Not (2001).

Sven and Goran make up an attractive and successful gay couple who’ve left the bustle of city life behind and relocated to a small town in their native Sweden. Gay people are few and far between here, and the couple’s arrival is met alternatively with hostility and over compensating pleasantries.

Still, the couple carries on, focusing their energies on the soon-coming results of their adoption application. Then the couple receives a letter that a Swedish child, Patrik, age 1.5, is in need of a home. Sven and Goran are overjoyed, and quickly begin preparing the house for its newest addition. When the fateful day to pick up their bundle of joy arrives, the two dads-to-be are in for a shocker. Patrik is actually a homophobic, 15 year-old juvenile delinquent. Patrick, Age 1.5 is as much about starting a family as it is about how our relationships change when we do.

This film is certain to be the perfect tonic to our Opening Gala Evening.

MDPL presents Jerry Lewis as The Bellboy 4/11/09

ART DECO FILM SERIES
Made in Miami Beach
Saturday 11 April
11:00 am
Join us for a series of films that are set (and substantially filmed) in Miami Beach in the 1940s and 50s. These films feature great directors, compelling performances, and glamorous (and not so glamorous!) hotels in Miami Beach’s golden years.

The Bellboy
Directed by Jerry Lewis
USA/1960/71 minutes/B&W
Filmed on location at the Fountainebleu Hotel, The Bellboy marks Jerry Lewis’ first film as writer-director-star. Though its gags are variable, the film works on every level. It’s both contemporary (love that jazzy MiMo architecture!) and a throwback to two-reel comedies of the late-silent/early-sound era, though it most closely resembles Jacques Tati’s M. Hulot’s Holiday (1953) in terms of structure and pacing. And, like Tati’s film, it keeps dialogue to a minimum, rendering its nearly-silent protagonist more an observer than force of action. Free admission.

The First Annual Miami Latin Gay Film Festival has been announced to make its premiere engagement April 16-19, 2009 in Miami Beach.

Festival organizer and Executive Director Jim Dobson unveiled a sneak peak at the four day event to take place in South Beach which will coincide with Miami Gay Pride Weekend.

“I am thrilled to be able to bring this exciting venture into South Beach filling a much needed gap in alternative programming for the Latino Gay community” said Dobson. “Through my six years of working with the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, I have noticed a huge demand for Latin Gay films and programming that was not always possible. The few Latin films programmed were always the first to sell out which proved a definite demand by the community.”

The Miami Latin Gay Film Festival will open on Thursday, April 16 with a Gala Premiere presentation at the Colony Theater followed by a spectacular party, all on Lincoln Road in South Beach. The Festival will continue with screenings, panels, music events and a few surprises along the way. Closing Night Awards Gala and screening will take place on Sunday, April 19 at the Colony Theater followed by a special musical event and party.

The mission of the Miami Latin Gay Film Festival is to showcase and nurture existing and emerging creative talent while serving as a springboard and catalyst for the promotion of Gay Latin films and filmmakers as well as highlight exciting Latino talent in other areas including music.

A premier Latino Gay International Film Festival in the USA, MLGFF will eventually become the prominent venue for exhibition of the best of Gay Latin cinema and artistry from the United States, Latin America, Mexico, Spain, Portugal and beyond.

The Festival will present feature films, documentaries, shorts and special retrospective screenings. The films presented at the Festival showcase a wide variety of themes by Gay Latino filmmakers, producers, writers and actors, as well as movies that depict Gay Latino culture. It is a competitive festival with prizes and a venue where filmmakers and artists can come together with buyers and industry.

The Miami Latin Gay Film Festival will also run the “Best of the Fest” simultaneously with the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival as well as contributing a substantial donation from its Closing Night to Care Resource.

Born May 10th, 1965 in Germany, Reitz lived between the US and Germany throughout her childhood and took a keen interested in art due to the constant exposure of moving around due to her father’s career. After being refused entry to art school, Reitz switched career pursuits to communication and took up an advertising job with Saatchi & Saatchi, but still yearned to make art.

After the birth of her first daughter, Reitz quit her job and began painting. Working tenaciously she produced a large amount of paintings and was quickly noticed; her first exhibition sold out after two days.

Over the last 10 years, Reitz has participated in over 40 exhibitions including a solo exhibition at Dresdner Bank at Pariser Platz, Berlin, for the re-opening of Brandenburg Gate hosted by Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Schröder in 2002.

Her move to Berlin in 1993 and living with the everyday effects of Berlin’s political history had a significant political influence on Reitz. This is evident in much of her paintings which often comment on the ‘heavy hand of politics’ and civil injustices. Appropriating current events such as a Turkish girl who was shot in the middle of Berlin by her own brother for not abiding by the Muslim practices of her family and girls trying to live up to the misleading glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous, Reitz’s work hones in on Global issues that affect our day-to-day lives.

Antonia Wright to Exhibit with Longtime Mentor the Legendary Clyde Butcher 4/17/09

The Nature of Things
Photography of Clyde Butcher and Antonia Wright
April 17th – May 29th, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, April 17th, 2009 7 – 10pm
Renee Gallery 1331 SW 8th St, Miami, Fl 33155
clydewright
Artist Antonia Wright celebrates her Miami homecoming with a photography exhibition in conjunction with her longtime mentor, the legendary Clyde Butcher. Back from New York where she was living and studying, most recently at the International Center of Photography, Wright has teamed up with Butcher to present The Nature of Things, two divergent collections of landscape photography, opening Friday, April 17th at the Renee Gallery.

For Wright, exhibiting side by side with Butcher has brought her full circle. She began her photography career in the Everglades apprenticing for the conservation-landscape photographer. Her work has evolved to employ photography, poetry, performance, installation, and video art, using the interaction between these forms to question the world around her. Noted for The Keys Project, which examined the idea of ownership through the collecting and documenting of keys, The Nature of Things is Wright’s exploration and disruption of environment.

In her photographs, Wright documents a landscape changed by the introduction of the natural and unnatural: a body covered in grass, dirt or flowers lining a New York City Street. Using herself or another live model, Wright’s photos capture the immediacy of the performance together with the reactions of passers-by.

Wright’s vision of the natural world staging a bizarre invasion of the urban landscape contrasts sharply with the traditional, large-format, black-and-white landscape photography of Butcher. Renowned for his exquisite, beautiful images of remote and untouched landscapes, Butcher has been honored both as an artist and as a conservationist for contributing to public awareness of the environment, specifically the unique ecosystem of the Florida Everglades.

Together the work of Wright and Butcher describes a relationship with nature that is both contradictory and eerily similar. Wright’s bits of the natural world become oddities in the urban environment while Butcher’s isolated landscapes assume an exotic and alien appeal.

Henry Lautz, uses organic shapes of wood and metal to evoke a sense of calm and quiet that allows the viewer a soulful connection. His new Pillow series will be exhibited.

STRETCH, uses steel and glass to communicate his vision with sturdy, rugged forms infused with delicate, subtle intricacies. STRETCH will exhibit the largest piece in the show.
Artist Robert Thiele, will display mixed media sculptures of acid etched plexi-glass, wood, laminate and canvas. His sculptural paintings appeal to the voyeur within allowing the spectator a glimpse into an unknown world hazed by the façade. Show continues thru the end of May.

Fredric Snitzer Gallery is pleased to present Timothy Buwalda’s second solo
exhibition titled Dislocation. Continuing a large format, this new body of paintings
explores themes of voyage and displacement.

In Buwalda’s work, wrecked cars have been a strong metaphor for
transformation and the potential of becoming. Throughout Dislocation, the
sentiment of change follows through the physical relocation in the paintings from an
industrial setting to woodland. The forest has taken an important role in this new
body of work as natural home and original structure for protection. Buwalda builds
associations with art historical references reinterpreting the idea of ‘home’.

Dislocation features a new project by the artist titled A Roof Over My Head.
A life size one bedroom house’s roof is built and exhibited within the gallery space.
This structure plays with the concepts of architecture and protection referencing the
forest in its function.

Timothy Buwalda was born in West Palm Beach. Buwalda graduated from New
World School of the Arts with highest honors and has exhibited at the Freedom
Tower, Miami, FL and the Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami, FL. He currently lives and
works in Miami, FL.

Sculptures and Paintings
Jorge Fernandez (USA), Hugo Moro (USA), Jorge Vallejos (Peru) and Luis Garcia Nerey (PR)
April 11th – May 6th, 2009
Opening Reception: April 11th, 2009 from 7:00 – 11:00 pm

Honoring Arteamericas – Miami’s premier fair for Latin American art – LURIE KAVACHNINA GALLERY is going to present Arteamericas Part “B”, a special exhibition that will be an interesting follow up of its participation in the prestigious art fair that took place in the Miami Convention Center, March 27-30. Guests will be able to view stunning sculptures by Jorge Fernandez and paintings by Jorge Vallejos, Luis Garcia Nerey and drawings by Hugo Moro at the gallery located in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, 46 NW 36 St. The exhibition will start on April 11th with an opening reception from 7:00 to 11:00 pm and will run until May 6th.

Hugo Moro. Master of perfection, Miami based artist with a new body of artworks says about his art : “I see a work in my mind, think it through down to minute details in a most obsessive way, I repeatedly envision myself going through every step of construction, conceptual and formal problems are encountered and revised”.

Jorge Fernández celebrates love and the mystery of life in his latest Welcome… sculpture collection. He wants his work to inspire others to do what they love, and maybe even what they have not had the courage to attempt before. . His creations are large in scale, 10 – 20 feet tall, and are made of first grade 304 L stainless steel. A delicate proposition of a poetic inspiration and calculated balance is involved in the creation of his monumental sculptures.

Luis García Nerey tries to manifest his own personal view of the Self, with its need for construction via human action and interaction, and the everyday living and experiencing.

Jorge Vallejos transmits clearly the intimate feeling of an anxious spirit in search of perfection. He shares with us some aspects of the beautiful philosophical experience to tread the path of the life trying to find out an accomplishment in his art.

SCOTT CAMPBELL – MAKE IT RAIN

O.H.W.O.W. proudly presents SCOTT CAMPBELL

Opening April 11, 2009 – In what will be his first major solo presentation of his works, Campbell will showcase his unique aesthetic via sculptures, paintings, drawings and photography. Scott Campbell was born and raised in a fishing camp, perched alongside a muddy bayou in rural Louisiana. With a clever knack for drawing and a fondness of stories, he began his career by doing illustration and assistant editing. Curiosity soon led him to experiment with tattooing and his immediate mastery of the art was undeniable. After a subsequent 18 month stint in Spain honing his craft, he packed up his skills and his tattoo machines and traveled for the next 5 years taking inspiration from the art and folklore of tattoo cultures all over the world.

In 2004, he opened Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Since then, it has grown to be the East Coast’s premier tattoo shop with a devout following of celebrity clientele. Campbell has the taken the blue collar grit and lore of tattoo culture and extracted a visual language and wit that are supremely refined and deliberate. He has an uncanny ability to tell a story with any medium, flesh or otherwise.

Recently, Campbell has been featured in group exhibitions at the IIleana Tounta Contemporary Art Centre in Greece, the Massimo Carasi gallery in Milan, Italy, Colette in France, Moeller Snow Gallery in New York, and O.H.W.O.W. in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach.

ABOUT O.H.W.O.W.: Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran’s Our House West of Wynwood (O.H.W.O.W.) is Miami’s most exciting high profile art space. Designed by Rafael de Cardenas of Architecture at Large, the venue features prominent international and U.S. based experimental art as well as innovative contemporary art forms through an alternative cross-disciplinary perspective.

Sonya Blesofsky New Work Opening at Gallery Diet 4/11/09

Sonya Blesofsky
New Work
April 11th – May 2nd, 2009
Opening Reception April 11th 7 – 10 p.m.
invitefront
Sonya Blesofsky is a sculptor and installation artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is comprised of predominantly destructible, fragile materials that are warped to re-create various architectural elements. In New Work, Sonya will draw from the gallery’s immediate surroundings. The installation will address the ways in which people and businesses in Wynwood build structures to protect themselves and their possessions. The installation will contain barbed wire atop chain-link fence, window bars and front door gates, a tangle of electrical cables sprouting from a wall, caged and locked light fixtures and air-conditioning units, cinder blocks, and wooden palettes. Each element of this ghostly installation will be life-size, and made entirely of paper, glue and tape.

Sonya’s work has been exhibited previously at Mixed Greens, Smack Mellon, the Islip Art Museum, the Dieu Donne Papermill, and various other institutions around the country. She has participated in residencies at the CUE Art Foundation, Dieu Donne Papermill, and Plane Space. Artforum online declared her the “critics pick” as did The Village Voice, her work has also been written about in the San Franciesco Chronicle, NYFA Current, and the Bloomberg News.

About Diet: Located at 174 NW 23 Street in Miami, Florida Diet represents five emerging and midcareer artists. Diet’s artist roster includes Brian Burkhardt, Charley Friedman, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski. The work of these five artists is exhibited alongside that of an invitational program of artists from around the world.

For more information or images please contact: 305.571.2288 or nina@gallerydiet.com

Information on Sonya Blesofsky’s previous bodies of work is available at www.sonyablesofsky.com

*Special thanks to The Fountainhead Residency for hosting Ms. Blesofksy.
