Chinese Artists Cao Xiaodong and
Li Xiaofeng Recycle Tradition
“SAVE AS: Contemporary Chinese Art Born of Ancient Traditions,”
offers an artistic take on the theme of recycling.

Being exhibited from the first time outside China, the show includes three garments fashioned of ancient ceramic shards and 18 mostly large-scale paintings whose subject matter is old photos and postcards.

Li Xiaofeng created two full-length dresses and a man’s jacket, shirt and necktie from pieces of Ming, Qing, Yuan and Song dynasty porcelain, sewn together with silver wire. Three of the fragments in one dress are from the Emperor’s Palace, as indicated by their five-clawed dragons, which were forbidden for anyone else.

Cao Xiaodong, whose paintings are done as a dot pattern reminescent of old newspaper illustrations, contrasts social and political context in China with that of the United States and Europe, such as young women in the militaristic uniforms of the Cultural Revolution compared with Playboy Bunnies, or the Tiananamen Square massacre with the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Ivan Loboguerrero, Alejandro De Narváez and Erick Sánchez. Recent Works
Loboguerrero was born Bogotá, Colombia. His art blends clean colors with shinning strokes, which creates peaceful atmospheres. His work is rich in oil quantity and though elaborated textures, visual sensations are generated. With this horizon, the artist offers us his first diptych.
De Narváez was also born in Colombia. His work includes both paintings and sculptures. . In his paintings, the mix of geometric angles and spherical elements, creates a gamma of vivid colors, which can be appreciated in his Forest series. In his sculptures, we see his inspiration, which is the geometry of the pre-Columbian cultures, evoking historical memories of legendary civilization
Sánchez is a painter and photographer born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1973. He brings us a serie of paintings Metamorphosis: Dreams and Memories. His work transports us to an ideal place full of hope peace and harmony. His work is an expression of his innermost self…his feelings, the manner in which he thinks, his deep spirituality.

César Paternosto
Painting and Sculpture 1970 – 2008

Born in Argentina in 1931, César Paternosto has exhibited widely in Latin America and abroad. Since he began working as an artist in the early 1960s, Paternosto has been in the vanguard of abstraction in Latin America. An expert on the symbolic systems of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Paternosto has used his own photography and drawings to document and analyze the ancient remains of the region. Paternosto’s exploration of Amerindian abstraction has fueled his artistic work of the last twenty years.
“[…] Ever since the early 1930s, when Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian’s studio and had that marvelous vision of imagining his neat rectangles as if they were flying through space, nobody had achieved a similar effect to the one conceived and executed by Paternosto with his pictures painted on the sides of the canvas, with the resulting effect described earlier, of glowing weightlessness.”
Francisco Calvo Serraller, The Edge of Light, in César Paternosto, exhibition catalogue; Segovia: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, 2004.

Terence Carr (Kenya), Dee Sands (Germany), John LaHuis (USA), KX2 (USA)
February 14 – March 11, 2009
Opening Reception: Feb 14, 2009 / 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Half-true, half –false… How vulnerable we are to deceit? Are we the victims or the perpetrators? Or even more; is it correct to call it deceit or just a difference in personal perception?

However you wish to view it, Art of Deception with artists Terence Carr (Kenya), Dee Sands (Germany), John LaHuis (USA) and KX2 (an artistic collaboration between sisters Ruth Avra and Dana Lynn Keinman) promises to be an entertaining and eye opening exhibition, in which the unifying theme is the duality and polarity in art with equally valid meanings; good versus bad, beauty versus ugliness, love versus hate, what you see might not be the same as what another person sees.

The opening reception will be held on February 14 from 7:00 to 11:00 pm at LURIE – KAVACHNINA GALLERY located in Miami’s Wynwood Art District at 46 NW 36 St.. Guest will be able to meet the artists, enjoy music and light refreshments. About Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation
The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation is a non-profit faith-based organization that was born out of the tragic death of the late Kansas City Chief linebacker Derrick Thomas on February 8, 2000. The founder, Mrs. Edith Morgan, suffered the sudden death of a beloved son whose vehicular accident could have been less tragic had he been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. She felt a pressing need to get the word out to other mothers about the importance of training our children in the use of seat belts. She also realized shortly thereafter that there were other issues she wanted to address and other situations wherein she wanted to be of service, particularly to mothers and to children. The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation focuses on child safety and empowerment and other issues that can impact a mother’s life such as a family member with paralysis, adolescent obesity, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, heath care, estate planning, etc.

Many people looked up to Derrick Thomas as a role model. He left a tremendous impact on people – even people who did not know him personally. He touched many lives while he was alive and the Mom-2-Mom 58 organization is trying to continue touching lives in his memory by concentrating on strengthening mothers and nurturing children.

South Florida Mom Turns Passion for Kids and Food into a Budding Business

Introduces New, Hands-On Approach to Teaching Valuable Skills
and an Appreciation for Food and Cooking

SURFSIDE, Fla. – The Budding Cook teaches kids from Aventura to Miami Beach the joy of cooking. Mimi Chacin, mother of two and founder of Surfside-based The Budding Cook, hosts cooking classes for kids from three to 12 by bringing the ingredients, the lessons, the equipment and the fun to their homes.

Chacin combines her passion for cooking with her flair for different cultures to provide a unique and educational activity for parents desperately seeking positive extracurricular outlets for their children.

“Kids are natural cooks because they are curious and have no fear in the kitchen,” said Chacin. “My goal is to channel their curiosity into the kitchen where we can cultivate an awareness of new flavors, cultures and nutrition.”

Born in Spain and raised in Venezuela by well-traveled parents, Chacin learned at a young age to embrace a multitude of cuisines. That is why many Budding Cook classes feature age-appropriate recipes for internationally-inspired dishes ranging from Pad Thai and Greek-inspired lamb meatballs with tomato, feta and olive salad to the more familiar whole wheat waffles with sliced fresh strawberries and maple syrup.

While fostering a greater appreciation of the origins of our food, The Budding Cook classes also reinforce traditional disciplines learned at school like math, reading, science, foreign language and geography, along with important skills like organization, following directions, time management and teamwork. According to Chacin, even the littlest Budding Cooks can benefit from refining their motor skills and improving their vocabulary.

As a culinary school graduate, Chacin understands the importance of kitchen safety. She strives to teach each Budding Cook the basics of proper food handling, food preparation, cooking techniques and presentation.

The excitement sparked by this latest craze for kids is palpable in Surfside, Bay Harbor, Miami Shores and other neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County where classes are in progress. Chacin is looking to the future with plans for summer camps and expansion to new neighborhoods like Coral Gables. She is also enthusiastic about introducing The Budding Cook concept to teenagers and adults as she grows.

Chacin received her B.S. in Mass Communications from Boston University in 1994 and graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale’s Culinary Arts Program with high honors in 2005. Before founding The Budding Cook in 2008, she worked in the kitchen of Michy’s, a Miami hot spot for foodies, and served as a resident cooking teacher at Skipping Stones, a local enrichment and activity center for kids.

Chacin resides in Surfside, Fla. with her two sons.

Emphasis will be on beginning with a well-drawn and composed scene, and progressing to a harmonious painting capturing the light and color of the scene. Students will start the day with a demo by Lisa and then begin their own work. Each day will close with critiques of the day’s work.

About the Instructor
Lisa Egeli’s paintings are moving and sophisticated portrayals of the places we treasure. Her landscapes and portraits, in oil and pastel, have been featured in many exhibits and permanent collections in her two decade professional career. Her life as a painter, however, began long before, growing up a third generation artist in a family of artists, and learning her earliest skills from her father, portrait and maritime painter Peter Egeli. Lisa’s formal training was at the American Academy of Art in Chicago . Her work has been recognized in a variety of distinguished regional and national events, including Plein Air Easton , Paint Annapolis, Oil Painters of America’s Regional and National Exhibitions, and Arts for the Parks. Lisa has been juried into “Plein Air Easton ” for three years in a row, and in 2007 was awarded “Best Pastoral Painting” by Juror Kenn Backhaus. In 2008 she was among 30 artists nationwide selected to participate in “Telluride Plein Air” in Telluride, Colorado . In 2008 her painting “Low Tide, Zanzibar” was juried into the 14th Annual Exhibition of the American Society of Marine Artists, which will travel to six museums on the East Coast. NEWLY RESTORED IN 2008!
Lola Montès
(Max Ophüls/France/1955/restoration 2008)
With Martine Carol, Peter Ustinov, Anton Walbrook

Max Ophüls’ final work, and arguably the masterpiece of a career that encompassed films in five different languages, Lola Montès is the colossal story of dancer turned exploited circus performer Lola Montès, told through flashbacks in various color tones according to the scandalous periods of her life. It was Ophüls’ first movie in color and Cinemascope widescreen, and was the biggest-budgeted French film to date. This ravishing new restoration was showcased to huge acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as well as this year’s Telluride and New York Film Festivals. It is the only film ever to have been selected for the New York Film Festival three times: for the very first NYFF in 1963, again in 1969, and this year. In French with English subtitles.
OFFICIAL SELECTION: Cannes, New York, and Teluride Film Festivals 2008
“THE GREATEST FILM OF ALL TIME!, and I am willing to stake my critical reputation on this one proposition above all others. . . Lola Montès is clearly the film of the year, or any year.” –Andrew Sarris, New York Observer 1963,
(and. . . “Sarah Palin is the new Lola Montes”—Andrew Sarris 2008)
“A BAROQUE MASTERPIECE!. . . among the most emotionally and visually ravishing works the cinema has to offer.”–Dave Kehr, New York Times

Pleasures & Loves Via Max Ophuls at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/19/09

19 THU 8:30pm
“PLEASURES & LOVES Via Max OPHÜLS”
Miami Theatrical Premiere!
NEWLY RESTORED IN 2008!
Le Plaisir (Pleasure)
(France/1952)
“But my friend, happiness is not a joyful thing”.
With Claude Dauphin, Jean Gabin, Simone Simon, Danielle Darrieux
Gaby Morlay, Madeleine Renaud

Next subject in Ophüls’ beautifully cinematic cannon of examination is that of pleasure, and its close affair with love. The film’s trio structure of three separate stories are filmed with sweeping grandeur, with a typical Ophüls wink of the eye. (but not in a Sarah Palin kind of way). First stop is Pleasure and YOUTH: (a man’s attempt to hide his age as he courts the ladies); then comes Pleasure and PURITY: (a brothel Madame’s attempt to bring balance into her girl’s lives by bringing them to her niece’s communion in the country); and finally Pleasure and DEATH: (a painter’s tragic love affair with his model). Who said pleasure was not multifaceted, very personal, and yes, complicated?

The Model Citizens present Cine-IMPROV Live at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/18/09

18 WED 8:30pm: The “Model Citizens” present
Cine-IMPROV Live!

Miami’s hottest improv actors perform unscripted theater based on your suggestions, in the art
of “long form improv,” rather than the typical comedy you see at the clubs and on TV. Including film dubbing, the “Armando Diaz Experience,” and a live improvised “movie” based on the life experiences of one of our audience members, with stylistic parody, edits, comedic characters,
and other scenic devices.
This month’s theme: LOVE (In All The Wrong Places!)
“The Cine-Improv troupe works at a higher level than even the pros you see on Comedy Central, late-night TV, and at clubs. Their improvised take on film removes the middleman and leaves him (rolling) on the cut-up room floor (in this case that’s the Miami Beach Cinematheque).”–Greg Baker New Times

The Man Who Laughs at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/14/09

14 SAT 8pm: Valentines Day!
“SILENTS Please!”
The MBC series of silent films with LIVE accompaniment!
The Man Who Laughs
(Paul Leni/USA/1928)
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo
With Conrad Veidt, Mary Philbin, and Olga Baclanova

A tragic love story that shocked but delighted American audiences in 1928 (and almost 100
years later, inspired actor Heath Ledger in preparation for his Oscar® nominated role in Dark Knight), silent star Conrad Veidt (from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) stars as Gwynplaine, an English nobleman’s son who is kidnapped by a political enemy after offending King James II, and then is mutilated by a gypsy “surgeon” who carves a “rictus” smile upon his face. Finding shelter
in a traveling freakshow, he falls in love with a blind girl (The Phantom of the Opera’s Mary Philbin), the one person who cannot be repulsed by his appearance. As years pass, Gwynplaine falls in love with her, but refuses to allow himself to marry her because he feels his hideous face makes him unworthy, and the hand of fate draws Gwynplaine back into the world of intrigue.
“ONE OF THE FINAL TREASURES of German inspired silent Expressionism”
—Roger Ebert
Tonight’s film will have LIVE OPERA accompanying the existing score, by Miami Music Academy vocalist AMY ALVARADO!
…And includes Coppola Wines with cheese from
Cabot Creamery of Vermont, and chocolates after the film!

An evening with Marian Marzynski & guest filmmaker Franco de Peña at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/12/09

12 THU 8:30pm
An evening with Marian Marzynski
And guest filmmaker Franco de Peña
Miami Theatrical Premiere!
The Future of an Illusion
(El Porvenir de una Ilusion)
(Franco de Peña/Poland/Cuba/1997) Cinematography: Antoine Vivas Denisov

Pablito, a young kid writes a message for his father asking him to return to Havana,
he inserts it in a bottle and throws it into the Sea.
Puly Orama, the cigar seller, quarrels once and again with his wife about money,
while she carries his infant in arms.
Blanca, the prostitute, is waiting for the love of her life to appear
and take her away from Havana.
Luisa, the aristocrat is waiting for her children to come back to Havana,
to see her before she dies.
They all wait for the New Year to come and bring them a better future,
an illusion that might bring light for their life.
Franco de Peña brings documentary and fiction together, with beautiful photography,
in a painting of soft tonalities and a microcosm tainted with melancholy. Born and raised in Venezuela, Franco de Peña traveled the world, learning and developing his filmmaking skills in Montreal, Berlin, Barcelona and in Poland where he graduated from the famous Polish Film School in Lodz. His film Future of an Illusion shot in 1997 on a Havana street called “Future Street”, tells its story applying documentary techniques, and combining acting with life observation. It is also a case of filmmaking under political censorship.
Marzynski, who was making films in the Communist Poland and de Peña,
who learned filmmaking in the post-Communist Poland, will engage in a interview/discussion after the screening.

Three Colors: Red (Trois Couleurs: Rouge)
(Poland/France/Switzerland/1994)
With Irène Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frédérique Seder

The concluding chapter in filmmaker Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy, Red tells the story of luminous Valentine, a young student and fashion model who befriends a bitter former judge. Their accidental meeting is just one of the many chance encounters woven through the narrative fabric of the feature. The subject here is fraternity, and indeed, its central characters are all closely connected, their destinies locked on a collision course.

10 TUE 8:30pm:
Three Colors: White (Trzy Kolory: Bialy)
(Poland/France/Switzerland/1994)
With Zbigniew Zamachowski, Julie Delpy, Janusz Gajos, Jerzy Stuh

The second feature in Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy, the black comedy White, Karol Karol is an expatriate Polish hairdresser whose French wife divorces him after just six months of marriage because of his impotency. Penniless and devoid of his passport, Karol must journey back to Poland by hiding in a trunk. Upon his return, he slowly begins amassing a considerable fortune, ultimately hatching a perverse plot for revenge. An allegory about equality, the film is mordantly wry, a cynical look at power, marriage, and capitalism. In Polish and French with English Subtitles

Pleasures & Loves Via Max Ophuls at the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/8/09

FEB 08 SUN 8pm:
The debut of:
“PLEASURES & LOVES Via Max OPHÜLS”
Ah. . .Paris in the 1950s. Or any decade for that matter. There is no city more romantic. And capturing pleasures and loves in Paris is what no director did better in the 1950’s as Max Ophüls, not a Frenchman at all, but born in Saarbrücken, Germany. His most famous “mature period” work after a decade in Hollywood, with its lyrical, magical display of sweeping black and white and finally color tracking shot cinematography, and stunning monumental production design, which seems to caress the characters that inhabit within, is best displayed in the trio of films at MBC this month: the beautifully restored versions of La Ronde, Le Plaisir, and Lola Montès. He was an icon of romance with a twist, and his films are now finally “mounted on canvas” properly again, in newly restored versions, half a century after his untimely death in 1957.
“Everyone in the world has two fatherlands: his own and Paris”- Max Ophüls

Miami Theatrical Premiere!
NEWLY RESTORED IN 2008!
La Ronde (Roundabout)
(France/1950)

“A Wonderful Merry-Go-Round of Love With Eleven Stars”
With Simone Signoret, Anton Walbrook, Serge Regianni, Simone Simon,
Daniel Gélin, Danielle Darrieux, Jean-Louis Barrault, Gérard Phillippe
Literally speaking, La Ronde is a ride in an amusement park. Colloquially, it can also apply to a dance, where the couples, well, they spin around. Ophüls’ film is based on a play of the same name, which was about class and the spreading of syphilis through a series of “rencontres sexuelles”. Ophüls drops the disease, and most of the class issues in his interpretation of the work. Instead he opts to examine the intricacies, and the false-shallowness of relationships. In his world, even what may seem to be the most meaningless sexual encounter leaves a mark on those involved, and in a sense everyone else they touch. –Cinematical

Synecdoche, New York the Miami Beach Cinematheque 2/6-7/09

FEB 06 FRI, 07 SAT 7pm & 9:15pm:
An MBC Premiere HD DIGITAL Presentation!
In collaboration with Emerging Pictures
Encore Miami Screenings!
Synecdoche, New York
(Charlie Kaufman/2008)

With Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Williams,
Tom Noonan, Emily Watson and Dianne Wiest.
For theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), life catering to suburban blue-
hairs at the local regional theater in Schenectady, New York is looking bleak. His wife
(Catherine Keener) has left him to pursue her painting in Berlin. His therapist (Hope Davis) is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. A new relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel (Samantha Morton) has prematurely run aground. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. Worried about the transience of his life, he leaves his home behind. He gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutal honesty.
“To say that Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Synecdoche, New York’ is one of the best films of the year or even one closest to my heart is such a pathetic response to its soaring ambition that I might as well pack it in right now.”– Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Comfort Zone Studio & Spa and Lola’s on Harrison Team Up with Cupid to Match Make the Five Senses to Create the Most Romantic Day of the Year

Lovebirds take a cue from Cupid this Valentine’s and escape to sun-kissed South Florida for love and romance. To assist in plotting a perfectly passionate getaway, Comfort Zone Studio & Spa and Lola’s on Harrison in Downtown Hollywood has teamed up with the “God of Love” to pamper that special someone and indulge their senses.
Through February 2009, treat honey to a romantic fantasy day trip. Downtown Hollywood will turn into a playground where couples will enjoy spa, shopping, and dining. The Feast for the Senses package can be reserved month long to celebrate the love couples have for one another.

This love-filled getaway begins with a rose petal foot ritual and tea service at Comfort Zone. Upon arrival, Miss or Mr. Valentine can be greeted with a note from her or his true Love. The “love letter”: A few special words from that special someone with details on the journey they will embark on for the next few hours — any of three package options:
“You & I”
Valentine’s romantic journey continues in a dim couple’s suite scented to entice love and clad in candles creating a feeling of passion. In the suite, “You & I” will each receive a side-by-side, “Rub My Back” massage to relax the couple as they prepare to indulge in an epicurean adventure. The massage is followed by $100 toward a romantic dinner for two at Lola’s on Harrison, inclusive of a bottle of wine and red roses. The “You & I” package is available through February for $200 per couple. Lola’s will honor the restaurant’s portion of the package on a separate day if the couple decides to spa and dine out on alternate dates.

“Toast to Romance”
Raise the glasses and toast the love for each other with a choice of a “Head to Toe” massage or “Face to Face” facial. Share the splendor of a stress-free environment in the privacy of couple’s suite clad with candles and scents to seduce love. This escape will relax the body, mind and soul while an exclusive James Beard Dinner for two with select Mondavi wine pairings at Lola’s on Harrison will indulge the senses. A champagne toast and red roses compliments Lola’s dinner. The “Toast to Romance” package is available through February for $300 per couple. Lola’s will honor the restaurant’s portion of the package on a separate day if the couple decides to spa and dine out on alternate dates.
“Swept Away”
Sweep them away with a spa surprise that begins with a “Scrub Me Softly” body brushing followed by a “Head to Toe” massage in an intimate couples suite fit with all the dressings for romance. The massage is followed by a hand paraffin dip for each. The couple can then dine in or dine out at the romantic and quaint Lola’s on Harrison where Chef Michael Wagner has prepared an exclusive four-course dinner for two, inclusive of a $90 bottle of champagne, red or white wine of choice, and red roses. The “Swept Away” package is available through February for $400 per couple. Lola’s will honor the restaurant’s portion of the package on a separate day if the couple decides to spa and dine out on alternate dates.
For lovers seeking a spa and culinary experience on Valentine’s Day, Chef Wagner has captured the essence of the most romantic day of the year in a three-course red-inspired menu and celebration toast. From 5 to 6:30 p.m. on February 14, Lola’s will offer their red menu as an early Lovebirds’ special for $40.00 per person. After 6:30 p.m., the menu — based on the four steps for the perfect, love-filled evening that represents each course — will be $65.00 per person. Advance reservations are recommended.

Dave Seaman and Dennis Ferrer come to SHINE @ The Shelborne Friday Jan 30, 2009.
Dave who has a residency at Shine returns with some new singles and with a his Gobbledygook part 3 & 4 that can be heard on his myspace.com site. Playing with Nick Warren at WMC09 in March, Dave explains “A new Dave Seaman single is finished and ready to roll. It’s a double header with the lead track being ‘Attack Of The Abalones’ and the other entitled ‘Wrong Side Business’ and I’ll be road testing them over the coming weeks so keep your ears peeled. Also, I’m pleased to announce that I’m planning to release two mix CDs this year with the first being the second installment of This Is Audio Therapy and the other being another collaboration with my long time friends and colleagues at Renaissance”

This double bill, has New Jersey master, Dennis Ferrer, who is known for his mixes of Dido which you can enjoy on his myspace site, but his “Soul Tech” sound precedes him. If you haven’t experienced him in the past do not miss this party…. Defected “in the house” album in 07 and continuous touring, brings the NJ boy back to Miami and Shine. January concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County include works by Shostakovich and Wagner conducted by Franz Welser-Möst

Miami City Ballet and Cleveland Orchestra launch new partnership with See The Music, Hear The Dancing performance and benefit dinner January 29, 2009, at the Adrienne Arsht Center

Chamber music performance and discussion at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University and Music and the Brain dialogue with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and Ali R. Rezai, MD, Jane and Lee Seidman Chair in Functional Neurosurgery and Director, Neurological Innovations for the Cleveland Clinic, at Books and Books

Collaborations continue and expand New World Symphony, University of Miami Frost of School of Music, and area schools

CLEVELAND, January 6, 2009 – The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency enters its third year at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County in January 2009 with a week of subscription concerts featuring Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 (“Leningrad”) and Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Songs with soprano Measha Brueggergosman as soloist.
The third season in the Orchestra’s multi-year residency project has developed and expanded community programs and will continue to include service to the Miami community through educational partnerships. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based board governing the Orchestra’s Miami Residency. For the 2009 season, these Cleveland Orchestra collaborations again feature professional-level training for New World Symphony fellows and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music students, including master classes led by members of The Cleveland Orchestra, reading sessions of new music, and access to Cleveland Orchestra working rehearsals. The Cleveland Orchestra will also support school music programs in both public and independent schools by working with the schools to provide coachings and master classes for youth musicians. Overall, The Cleveland Orchestra will reach nearly 7,000 people with educational and community engagement activities over the course of the 2009 residency, including nearly 4,000 students from Miami-area public and private schools who will attend April Education Concerts.

Cleveland Orchestra Subscription Concerts
The Cleveland Orchestra’s first concert program at the Adrienne Arsht Center for 2009, on January 30 and 31, features Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leading the Orchestra in performances of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 (“Leningrad”) and Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Songs with soprano Measha Brueggergosman as soloist. The Orchestra’s second concert program, on March 6 and 7, features Kurt Masur leading the Orchestra in performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, “Leonore” Overture No. 3, and Piano Concerto No. 1 with Louis Lortie as soloist. The Orchestra’s third concert program, on April 3 and 4, features Pinchas Steinberg leading the Orchestra in performances of Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Brahms’s Violin Concerto with Nikolaj Znaider as soloist.
Pre-Concert Conversations are presented one hour before every Cleveland Orchestra subscription concert at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Free to concert ticket holders, these Conversations are designed to enrich the concert-going experience by providing insight into the music performed at the concerts, or interviews with performing artists. The Pre-Concert Conversations for the January 30 and 31 concerts will feature Juan Carlos Espinosa, associate dean and fellow of the Honors College, Florida International University.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s subscription series is presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.

Cleveland Orchestra and Miami City Ballet Launch New Collaboration
with Performance and Benefit Dinner on January 29

On January 29, 2009, Miami City Ballet and The Cleveland Orchestra will join forces to launch a collaboration with a one-night-only performance, See The Music, Hear The Dancing, at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House in Miami.
To celebrate this collaboration, an elegant benefit dinner will be held immediately after the performance, on-stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall. The event proceeds benefit The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency and Miami City Ballet. Tickets for the performance and dinner are $1,000 and can be purchased by contacting Rebecca Interian at (305) 929-7000, ext. 1445. Tables are also available for purchase. Cocktail attire is suggested.
The event’s name, See The Music Hear The Dancing, comes from a quote by the legendary George Balanchine. The program features Miami City Ballet performing two ballets by George Balanchine: Symphony in Three Movements set to music by Igor Stravinsky and Symphony in C with music by Georges Bizet. In addition to performing the music to the ballets, The Cleveland Orchestra will also perform Tchaikovsky’s “Polacca” from The Sleeping Beauty and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (“Fingal’s Cave”), Opus 26.
Approximately 300 distinguished artists and guests of both organizations are expected to attend, including the Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, Edward Villella, and the Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst.
The event is chaired by Jan R. Lewis and Dr. Margaret Eidson. The host committee includes: Adrienne Arsht, Ana Codina Barlick & Robert Barlick, Jr., Audre & Don Carlin, Lora & Fred Drasner, Dr. Margaret & Mike Eidson, Hector Fortun, Marvin Ross Friedman & Adrienne bon Haes, Pamela Garrison & R. Kirk Landon, Jan R. & Dan Lewis, Frances Sevilla-Sacasa, Penny & Roe Stamps, and Janet & Richard Yulman.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is the presenting sponsor and has awarded the project a grant from the Knight Foundation Arts Partnership, a five-year, $40 million initiative to transform the arts in South Florida. The effort includes endowment grants to leading arts institutions, plus a community-wide contest to fund the best arts ideas.
Knight Foundation promotes journalism excellence worldwide and invests in the vitality of communities in the United States where the Knight brothers once owned newspapers. Knight Foundation invests in ideas and projects that can lead to transformational change.

Opportunities for New World Symphony musicians,
University of Miami students, and area high-school students
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst continues The Cleveland Orchestra’s relationship with the New World Symphony and the University of Miami Frost School of Music during the Orchestra’s annual Miami residencies.
In addition, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will continue to support school music programs in both public and private schools in the Miami area. In January, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will provide coachings at New World School of the Arts and Coral Reef High School (Miami-Dade County Public Schools) as well as coachings and master classes at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove.

New Community Collaborations in January 2009
During the January residency, members of The Cleveland Orchestra will participate in an exploration of the music and politics of Stalin’s Russia on Tuesday, January 27, at The Wolfsonian-Florida International University in Miami Beach. In conjunction with the Orchestra’s performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 (“Leningrad”), Juan Carlos Espinosa, associate dean and fellow at the Honors College, Florida International University, will explore music and politics in Stalin’s Russia at this lecture/performance that will conclude with members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8.
The Wolfsonian is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and Ali R. Rezai, M.D., the Director of Cleveland Clinic Neurological Innovations and member of Cleveland Clinic Arts & Medicine Institute, will hold a special Music and the Brain dialogue at Books & Books in Coral Gables. The discussion will examine new understandings about the vast impact of music on the human brain, including a question-and-answer session followed by a short chamber music performance. Discussion topics will include how music affects the brain and its medical, musical, social and philosophical implications, the unique way in which music and the brain interact, and current research and clinical applications of music in neurological rehabilitation. This program is part of a recently launched international collaboration between The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Clinic.
Books & Books, Coral Gables was founded by Mitchell Kaplan in 1982. Since that time, the store has become one of the most well-respected independent bookstores in the country. It’s a local landmark and an inspiring gathering place for writers as well as readers. The philosophy at Books & Books has remained constant throughout the years: it’s about neighbors, books, history, quality, tradition and creativity. Since 1982, Books & Books has hosted local, national and international writers as part of its award-winning Reading Series. Books & Books hosts reading groups, poetry groups, free workshops and lectures, and partners with many cultural, educational and charitable organizations to present special events at its four locations.

Miami Residency adds to Orchestra’s existing long-term
performance relationships and residencies in New York, Lucerne, Salzburg and Vienna
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency project commenced in January 2007, during the 2006-07 inaugural season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (then called Carnival Center for the Performing Arts). The Orchestra’s residency project in Miami includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center as well as service to the Miami community through educational activities. The 2008 Miami residency served more than 20,000 members of the Miami-Dade community through concerts, educational programs, collaborative performances, and patron events. These included three weekends of sold-out subscription concerts; a performance celebrating Israel at 60, presented in partnership with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation; and free Education Concerts for more than 3,500 fifth graders at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to education and community service began when the Orchestra was founded in 1918, and today more than 70,000 Cleveland-area schoolchildren, teachers, families, young musicians and adult learners participate in the Orchestra’s educational programs in Cleveland designed to nurture a lifelong love of music. With its Florida-based educational activities, the Orchestra continues to broaden its role with universities and conservatories, which previously focused on the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
In addition to its residency at the Adrienne Arsht Center, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland: with Carnegie Hall in New York, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. Continuing a long relationship with Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra committed to a multi-year association of performances there under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. With Carnegie Hall and the Lucerne Festival, the Orchestra is involved in a biennial commissioning project, the Roche Commissions, which include world premiere performances by the Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival. The Orchestra has performed at the Lucerne Festival four times since 2004, most recently in August 2008. The Musikverein Residency was conceived as a long-term relationship, which includes series of concerts at the Musikverein under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The Orchestra’s five concerts at the Musikverein in 2003 marked the first such residency by an American orchestra in the history of that venue. In its third Musikverein Residency, the Orchestra performed four concerts at the Musikverein in October/November 2007. During their Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst made five appearances in a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.

Trina Restaurant & Lounge Sets the Valentine’s Day Trend with an Early Lovebirds Special Featuring a Menu of Love 2/14/09

LOVEBIRDS DINE OUT EARLY:
VALENTINE’S DAY IS A SUNSET AFFAIR THIS YEAR

Trina Restaurant & Lounge Sets the Valentine’s Day Trend
with an Early Lovebirds Special Featuring a Menu of Love

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For lovers who are watching their wallets and planning to stay home on Valentine’s Day, Trina Restaurant & Lounge at The Atlantic Resort & Spa has sparked new interest in celebrating the most romantic day of the year with an early “Lovebirds” special for $39.00 per person from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on February 14. After 6:30 p.m., the “Menu of Love” will be available with additional offerings for $59.00 per person.

With the assistance of the Roman “God of Love,” Cupid, Executive Chef Brian Kay and a talented culinary team have created a love-filled, four-course menu inspired by the most romantic region of the world, the Mediterranean.

In keeping with Trina’s Valentine’s tradition, Chef Kay has named each course with a catchy and whimsical phrase to set the tone for love. This year’s “Menu of Love” pays a counter-tribute to Sweetheart Conversations Hearts, the top-selling and popular Valentine’s candy. Each dinner course has been named after the food-inspired phrases found on this year’s candy hearts: “Recipe 4 Love,” “Table 4 Two,” “Stir My Heart,” and “Sweet Love.”

New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) chose these love sayings to embrace the role romantic dinners play in celebrating love. Chef Kay chose to honor NECCO and the famous hearts for recognizing the evolution of ingredients, flavors, and cooking as a romantic art form. The “Menu of Love” features:

Recipe 4 Love: choice of asparagus veloute, hot and creamy with a parmesan tuile, or stuffed squid with braised artichoke bottoms and zesty tomato sauce, or prosciutto and figs — imported prosciutto and black mission figs with creamy gorgonzola, micro basil and aged balsamic

Table 4 Two: select between an arugula salad with sweet strawberries, toasted hazelnuts, and champagne vinaigrette or salad of baby watercress with seedless watermelon, crumbled feta cheese, extra virgin olive oil, kissed with fresh mint.

Stir My Heart: For the main course, a lobster risotto with Maine lobster served with Arborio rice and finished with sweet butter and fresh grated pecorino is an option. Lovers can also feast on s seared pomegranate duck, pan seared and served with butternut squash and Shiitake mushroom hash or stuffed jumbo shrimp, stuffed with peeky toe crab meat and served with a grilled yellow squash and zucchini napoleon and beurre blanc sauce; grilled lollipop veal chop with an asparagus flan and morel mushroom 39 sauce.

Sweet Love: one of three sweet creations — warm and silky, a warm dark chocolate cake served with almond cremolata over a bed of coriander and port marinated strawberries; soft and sweet, an orange and honey mousse torte with a rosewater-champagne sorbet and vanilla anise cream; wild and spicy, a banana and ginger semi-fredo with a warm coffee cream and candied pop rocks.

Add to the Splendor and Tell Valentine “BE MINE” in Any of Five Ways
Prior to or after dinner, The Atlantic Resort & Spa and its surroundings is the perfect way to say “I Love You” by:

Stealing a kiss from the fifth floor pool-side terrace of The Atlantic Resort & Spa overlooking the Atlantic Ocean
Holding hands and linger as you walk on the golden sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach
Sharing appetizers and drinks at the ultra-chic Trina Lounge
Relaxing together with a couple’s massage at Spa Atlantic
Making an overnight or weekend reservation at the intimate and luxurious Atlantic Resort & Spa

Trina Restaurant and Lounge is located at The Atlantic Resort & Spa, 601 Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, on A1A between Las Olas and Sunrise Boulevards. For reservations, call 954.567.8070. For more information, visit www.trinarestaurant.com.

Bonita Springs Blues Festival 3/14/09

The third annual Bonita Blues Festival will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from noon – 8:00 p.m. at Riverside Park in downtown Bonita Springs, FL. The festival will feature top-notch blues music, and a wide variety of food and other vendors.

The bands scheduled to perform can all be described “headliners”. They include: Joey Gilmore, along with his band, who took 1st place honors in the 2006 International Blues Challenge band division. The 2006 International BLUES Challenge called them “…the best unsigned band on the planet”; Albert Castiglia, with his incendiary electric and slide guitar work and soulful vocals, has been nominated for a 2009 Blues Music Award for best song, “Bad Year Blues”; The Jony James Blues Band whose first Blue Wave CD, “In This World”, was released internationally and rose to number five album of the year in “The Detroit Metro Times”; Rastus Kain, who has been described as the finest electric slide guitarist in the state of Florida, if not the whole South, and is also an extremely gifted songwriter; and Tommy Lee Cook, Danny Shepard and the All Stars, known in southwest Florida as the best of the best, will feature their brand of Southern-tinged Chicago blues. In addition, the celebrity emcee for part of the festival will be television personality, Stacey Adams, of WINK-TV NEWS.

Proceeds of the Bonita Blues Festival will benefit the Bonita Springs Assistance Office. Since its founding in 1979, the Bonita Springs Assistance Office has been recognized as the primary social service agency in the area. Generous donations have enabled the assistance office to continue to provide to those in our community who are less fortunate. The Bonita Springs Assistance Office believes in providing a “hand up” and not a “hand out.” The assistance office extends the helping hand of assistance, shows clients who are able to work how to locate jobs and become productive members of the community, and specializes in working with elderly residents and families with young children. All donations remain in this area to benefit residents in crisis. Over the years, these emergency programs have helped thousands of residents get back on their feet.

Tickets to the festival are $10 per person in advance and $15.00 at the gate. For additional information and tickets, visit www.bonitablues.com or call (239) 947-0715.

Lombardi Properties Hosts Inaugural Life Is Art Miami Featured Artist Fair

www.lifeisartfest.org

Miami, FL, January 27, 2009 – The Miami art scene is exploding. America’s largest art week recently passed, surrounding Art Basel Miami Beach, featuring dozens of art fairs and tens of thousands of art patrons. The monthly art walks all across Miami bustle with more and more people, where just a few years ago they were quiet. Art galleries are springing up all across the city. People travel from all over the world to discover what we already know: Miami, the Magic City, has a creative soul.

David Lombardi, head of Lombardi Properties has seen this phenomenon and made a bold move to support the bourgeoning art scene. Lombardi Properties will be the host sponsor for the inaugural Life Is Art Miami Featured Artist Fair on March 7th at their 1926 Seminole Building property at 120 NW 25th Street in the fast growing Wynwood Arts District.

Life Is Art is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the arts in Miami and the surrounding area. They are producing their first art fair developed to feature Miami and south Florida based artists. Future projects include regular arts events, as well as an arts incubator.

Co-founder James Echols said, “We have seen such a growth of gifted artists in Miami, yet there seems to be a lack of focus on our own locals.” The other fairs and galleries feature artists from all over the world, which is a wonderful thing. “But, we have such talent in our own back yard that we decided that there should be a fair with a Miami focus,” Echols said.

Echols and partner and co-founder, Annette Peikert, assembled a group of fellow Miami artists and art lovers to produce the event.

R. E. Sanchez, working Miami artist and art educator, is the Artistic Director. His ties to the artist community and his knowledge of art promise to bring excellent work to the fair.

Talmage Thornhill was chosen as the Marketing Director for her long experience in the entertainment and nightlife business. She also brings a degree in the fine art of ballet, which informs her artistic sensibilities.

Susan J. Lewis brings her many years as a musician, DJ, and producer to her position as Music Director. She is also heading up the environmental aspect of the event, with her five years of professional work in environmental conservation. She is currently director of an environmental education center in Miami, is an active member of various environmental organizations, and holds a graduate degree in environmental education, management and conservation.

Financial Director Adriana De Welde has many years experience as a financial analyst and is a lifelong art lover, as well as an amateur filmmaker. Her keen business sense provides a stable base from which to build an efficient organization.

Co-founders Annette Peikert and James Echols have been involved in event production for years, having produced their own events, as well as working with numerous others. They are long time art lovers, having collected since they were in college.

Artists interested in participating should contact the organization through the website, www.lifeisartfest.org.

Description:
Primo and Secondo Pilaggi are Italian immigrants who settle on the New Jersey shore and open a restaurant, the Paradise, hoping to strike it rich. Primo, the elder brother, is a master chef from the Old World who is concerned only with quality and authenticity in the kitchen. Secondo, the younger brother and business manager, is all too eager to compromise if it means more customers and more cash. Teetering on the brink of failure, the brothers learn that the famed Italian-American musician Louis Prima is performing in the area and they contrive to host a dinner in his honor. Hoping that a “big night” built around a celebrity like Prima will get them publicity, the brothers pool all their talent, energy and every cent they have to plan a sumptuous banquet of unsurpassed ambition. What follows is a culinary adventure that will teach them a lot about themselves, each other, and their different definitions of life, love and success.

Level 25 Friday Happy Hours 1/30/09

“Level 25 has such a cool, modern vibe that resonates throughout the space,” says DJ Induce, who’s well known for his appearances at hotspots like The Vagabond, The White Room and The Standard, has added Level 25 to his resident DJ roster. “It’s the perfect setting for my various music styles.” Having played abroad in countries like China, Germany, Spain and France, Induce has successfully incorporated his worldly influences into the open format he plays here until 1a.m. His ultimate goal while playing to the crowd: “to offer the sense that something different is going on… and simply play good music.”

It’s also worthy to mention that the bar here provides welcome wallet relief for visitors with a weekly $6 cocktail special from 5-7 p.m. Specialty cocktails like the Brickelltini and the Black Martini (made with Blavad black vodka) have proven popular. For those with a serious taste for vino, The Wine Attic provides a perfect alternative to spirits. Offering over 40 different wines by the glass ranging from $8-38, the room has the potential to placate the palates of all connoisseurs.

Inte restingly enough, this party offers more than just drinks. Every Friday from 6-7 p.m., award winning executive chef Michael Gilligan of Atrio puts together an offering of complimentary and delectable Spanish pintxos, or small plates, including saffron sautéed Spanish artichokes, duck confit cazuelita and foie gras and goat cheese empanadas. If that’s not enough, a distracting raw bar offers larger than life king crab legs oysters, sushi, clams, mussels and other seafood treats.

With no cover, no guest list and no velvet ropes, Level 25 leaves everyone wanting more week after week. And for once in Brickell, there’s no need to worry about where to park — the valet’s got it covered.

Need the Perfect Valentine’s Gift For Your Love: Commission NYC Artist Noah G Pop to Create an Original “POPographic” Portrait That Will Be Treasured For a Lifetime

New York, NY (December 20, 2008) – When it comes to Valentine’s Day gift giving, is it really only the thought that counts? Imagine your love’s reaction as you tell her that you’ve commissioned an artist to create an original piece of photographic pop art with her as the inspiration, muse and object of beauty.

This unique, one of a kind portrait will undeniably be a treasured keepsake for any lucky receiver. Gift her with a once in a lifetime experience; the opportunity to collaborate in the photography and creation of a pop art masterpiece. Alternatively, gift him with the final product to cherish.

Noah G POP’s custom visages breathe new life into the artistic portrait arena; a modern, sexy and edgy take on the classic beauty portraits that have spanned our culture. Noah captures the beauty and essence of his models in his photos and has the creative ability to morph them into highly stylized, vibrant and powerful photographic giclées on canvas. “I believe being commissioned for a Valentine’s portrait is one of the highest honors an artist can receive. It is a personal invitation into a couple’s most private moments during one of the most meaningful times of the year. Being entrusted with this task motivates me to create a magnificent and magical experience to be treasured on that day and for years to come” says Noah G POP.

From his first glance though the camera’s lens, Noah seeks the truest essence of his subject. For him, the medium has become a catalyst that heightens and transforms digital photography into magnificent and imaginative new dimensions.

All commissions include a personal photo shoot with NOAH G POP, custom image creation (POPography) and conversion of images to custom photographic giclées on canvas. Portraits start at $4000 for a 30” x 30” canvas and have been produced as large as 45” x 60”. Noah G POP creates portraits of women, men, children, pets and more.

High Resolution images are available and an artist interview can be arranged.

About Noah G POP: Noah’s art has been showcased in galleries throughout New York, Las Vegas and Miami and his art and custom clothing designs are in the personal collections of Russell Simmons, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Wyclef Jean, Nicole Miller, Maya Angelou, Eryka Badu, Jill Scott and Queen Latifah . Currently, Noah is working vigorously at developing his fashion line and is planning to bring his art to consumer products everywhere. Visit www.noahgpop.com for more information.

The Beginning of Noah G POP
Noah Greenspan aka Noah G POP has been an avid art collector since 1992. In 2005, Noah decided to make the transition from collector to artist finding inspiration in the works of such pop art icons as Andy Warhol and Romero Britto and in the sensual nightscenes portrayed by Argentinean painter, Fabian Perez. Over the past three years, Noah G POP has crafted his own unique style-POPography.

What is POPography?
POPography is a unique fusion of digital photography, pop expressionism and fine art standards that brings an image from the photographer’s studio to the digital darkroom and artist’s workspace to its final home on canvas. This process heightens and transforms digital photography into magnificent and imaginative new dimensions.

Why POP art?
“An amazing part of the appeal for me is that Pop Art means so many different things to different people. Being both a photographer and a digital artist, I have a great deal of latitude in creating work for my clients. I always look forward to the challenge of creating a magical experience for people,” says Noah G POP.

Noah G POP’s Story
Noah Greenspan, 38, was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He is a practicing cardiovascular and pulmonary specialist as well as educator and published researcher. He has been named Best Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapist in the US for the past 3 years by Best of the US. Greenspan is also an Emergency Medical Technician and a SCUBA Diving International Instructor.

Where is Noah G POP?
Noah’s art has been showcased in galleries throughout New York, Las Vegas and Miami and his art and custom clothing designs are in the personal collections of Russell Simmons, Pele, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Wyclef Jean, Nicole Miller, Maya Angelou, Eryka Badu, Jill Scott and Queen Latifah. Noah G POP has participated in Art Expos New York and Las Vegas. His work “Flatiron” Building has been featured on the cover of Art Business News.

Where is Noah G POP going?
Noah G Pop has only just begun his rise in the art world. He is destined to become a permanent figure on the Pop Art scene with a newly-developing fashion line and an even faster growing collector base.

The NYC-based Cuban guitarist and composer will release a new masterpiece of musical magical realism, Johnny’s Dream Club. Named for a legendary Havana jazz cabaret of the 1950s, home of the filin movement, it represents a place outside of time — the vortex of the tumultuous force field between New Orleans and Havana, where the parallel lines of Cuban music and American jazz converge.

“Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy”
presented by Dr. Steve Kraus Vice President, The Harrison Group
Understanding your affluent customer is paramount to success in 2009.

The economic shifts, new perceptions of wealth, lack of trust in our financial system, stealth purchasing and the widespread belief that the only way out of this dilemma is to increase taxes has the affluent reeling and pulling out of the market.

In his new provocative book, Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy, marketing and branding expert Stephen Kraus mines success stories of the truly rich to learn how they acquired their fortunes, whether it has changed them and how they live their lives.

Arguing that the wealthy are poorly understood by the average American, the media and marketers of high-end products, the authors contend that accurately understanding this group is critical for success in the marketing, sales, product development, branding and advertising fields. They dispel the myth that most of the rich have inherited their money and reveal the socioeconomic factors behind their self-made rises to success.
Exploring how the rich spend their money and what influences their buying decisions, the authors identify the five classes of the newly wealthy with distinct reactions to the value and purpose of money; groups that greatly differ in their lifestyles and financial attitudes. Charts and graphs throughout distill key data into easy-to-grasp nuggets, lending clarity to this book whose fresh take on the habits of the American economic elite will be indispensable to marketers.

About Dr. Steve Kraus

Co-author, The New Elite:Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealty
Based on a ground-breaking series of studies, The New Elite busts the myths about wealth in America, and provides a research-driven look at the attitudes and lifestyles of the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Lola’s on Harrison Brings Passion to the Most Romantic Day of the Year with a Red-Inspired Menu that Oozes Love 2/14/09

COLOR ME VALENTINE:
CUPID SAYS ROUGE IS THE RAGE THIS HOLIDAY

Lola’s on Harrison Brings Passion to the Most Romantic Day of the Year
with a Red-Inspired Menu that Oozes Love

The color red is often associated with lust, passion, love and beauty. Infusing these characteristics into his Valentine’s Day dishes, Chef Michael Wagner from Lola’s on Harrison has chosen red as the theme throughout his V-Day menu.

A popular food color known to stimulate the appetite, Chef Wagner has captured the essence of the most romantic day of the year in a three-course, prix fixe menu with a celebration toast and in an early “lovebirds” special. From 5 to 6:30 p.m. on February 14, Lola’s will offer their red menu for $40.00 per person. After 6:30 p.m., the menu — based on the four steps for the perfect, love-filled evening that represents each course — will be $65.00 per person. Lola’s red Valentine’s menu features:

The Pick Up Line: toast to a fresh raspberry bellini.

Your First Move: choice of seared ahi tuna, red pepper and red cabbage slaw with fire roasted tomato dressing or red beet salad with frisee, poached pears, maytag blue cheese, candied pecans in champagne vinaigrette.

Seduce Your Senses: select a red chili crusted filet mignon with black diamond cheddar au gratin potatoes and smoked tomato-chipotle sauce or skillet seared Chilean sea bass with spice red lentil pancakes and roasted red pepper butter sauce.

Sweet Ending: red velvet cupcake with a cream cheese frosting or fresh strawberry rhubarb pie with whipped cream and strawberry sauce.

In addition to the prix fixe red menu, Lola’s will have a limited menu available for patrons who are interested in the restaurant’s popular, signature dishes.

For Valentine’s reservations, call 954.927.9851. To learn more about Lola’s on Harrison, visit www.lolasonharrison.com.

Lola’s on Harrison is located at 2032 Harrison Street in Hollywood, Fla. The restaurant is open for dinner Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5-10 p.m.; Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5-12 a.m.; closed Mondays. Ample free parking is located behind the restaurant. All major credit cards accepted. For more information, call 954.927.9851 or visit www.lolasonharrison.com.

Say goodbye to “W” At the official FLORIDA Premiere screening of Crawford 1/19/09

19 MON 8:30pm:
Say goodbye to “W” At the official FLORIDA Premiere screening of Crawford
A new documentary being screened in every state of the union. “Small Town Values” big time politics’ winning slogan. But does the political machine, so desirous of this wholesome image, actually value the small town itself?

In 1999, then Governor George W. Bush bought a ranch in the one-stoplight town of Crawford, Texas, calling it “home” just in time to set his sights on the White House. Having invented Bush’s “folksy image,” the campaign’s victory thrusts Crawford onto the world stage and an insular community of barely 700 explodes overnight. While the high school band plays the inauguration and the Baptist pastor declares a miracle, Crawfordites sell souvenirs hand over fist, finding themselves nearly trampled under the heels of the international press corps, patriotic tourists and boomtown opportunists. Then, four and a half years into Bush’s tenure, Cindy Sheehan and her peace movement arrive at the doorstep of the “Western White House.” Crawford takes center stage. Left to deal with the aftermath, the real people of Crawford are changed forever. Now comes CRAWFORD, an often funny, deeply human story told by unforgettable characters. As witness to one man’s (and his spin doctor’s) decision to intertwine his life with the real small town America, the film ultimately becomes a microcosm of a nation in flux — a unique and poignant reflection on the Bush era.
MBC Members FREE (otherwise, $5 for this special screening).
Your ticket is also a chance to win a set of “W” shot glasses, to toast his return to his now very different “home town”!
