Photographs – Art Basel Miami Art Week 2008

{Finally! My photographs from the big Miami Art Week surrounding Art Basel, December 2-7, 2008. I had over 2000 photographs to go through. Below is a summary, click the thumbnails to be taken to the galleries. Or you can just click HERE to be taken to the main gallery and peruse at your leisure.}

We actually started the week on Monday with the Knight Foundation Award ceremony, the Diaspora Vibe Gallery, and Jason Beitler Fine Arts, but I did not have my camera with me.

So, Tuesday was Aqua Wynwood, Photo Miami Opening, Miami Photo Expo Opening, and ending up at O.H.W.O.W. Gallery for some live music!
0003-artbaseltuesday120208

Wednesday we did Aqua Miami Beach, Kaiju at Art Center, Bass Museum, Art Positions Opening, Yelle Concert, and then saw Ellis G do some great sidewalk art.
Wednesday 12/3/08

Thursday I hung out at the Bustello lounge for a while blogging, then headed over to the Gen Art Vanguard sneak preview, we headed up to Bakehouse, then Bridge Miami Beach, and ended the night at the Soleil lounge at Table 8 which was awesome!
618-artbaselthursday120408

Friday we started at the Surface Lounge atop the Gansevoort South, then headed over to the media party withScion at Raleigh which was absolutely fabulous, then off to the Pool Art Fair which we always love, over to Art Now at the cute South Seas Hotel, then off to a special party at Locust Projects, then ending the night at Vanguard by Gen Art. Overall, I would have to say that Friday was the best day of the week.
0878-artbaselfriday120508

Saturday we stopped by this funny wooden construct to check out some Watches, then to the Artists Fair at the Shelborne which had some really good stuff, stopped by the Bustello cafe for some lunch and found the artist for their poster signing them, then perused Art Positions for a bit, went by Ink at Dorcester which was very nice, stopped by the Art of Shade trunk show at South Seas with the Art Now Fair, headed up to the Deuville to see the Nobe 67 show, then over to wander Wynwood for a bit, and found the Bombay Sapphire Lounge open, of course, and then hung out at Edge Zones for a bit, so good to see them back.
1396-artbaselsaturday081206

By Sunday, of course, we were dragging a bit, but there was still a lot we wanted to see. Art Miami was okay, The Station was one of the best pieces of the entire week, Red Dot, Sculpt Miami, NADA, Pulse, Ping Pong at Gen Art, and ending at the Pool Art Fair.
1746-artbaselsunday120708

{Of course, there were tons of little things that we saw in-between, which I tried to catch, graffiti, the Punk Rock installation, the Obey posters, and many galleries in between. All in all, I would have to say this is our best year yet. We had a fabulous time, met some great people, drank an enormous amount, and experienced some fantastic art.}

Director Michael Bay United Way Event 12/27/08

Happy Holidays from Michail Capponi:

From the bottom of my heart I wanted to wish all of you very happy holidays.

As most of you will recall, last year around the holidays, we launched an annual event called “A Toast to United Way” to raise much needed funds for our community. Last year’s inaugural event festivities extended over four-days, with celebrations at more than a dozen elite venues on South Beach including Cameo, China Grill, Florida Room, The Forge, Glass, Mansion, Mokai, Mynt, Opium Garden, Prive, Rokbar, Sagamore Hotel, SET, Snatch and Suite.

I am once again chairing this event for United Way. This year, film director Michael Bay was gracious enough to open up his beautiful home, the former Hogan estate renovated by Capponi Group, for our 2nd Annual “A Toast to United Way”. The director of such blockbusters as Transformers, Pearl Harbor, and Bad Boys, Bay is serving as the host for the evening.

The invitation-only event will be held at 8 pm, on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Bay’s Miami Beach home. Tickets are $250 per person. VIP tickets, which will allow guests to join Bay and his celebrity guests on a private rooftop lounge, are available for $500 per person. Fine cuisine is graciously catered by The Forge and top shelf drinks generously provided by Diageo. Following the reception, all guests will be invited to an after-party. Proceeds go to support the work of United
Way of Miami-Dade.

As the event chair I am urging you all to come support the United Way and its great causes to help fund over 70 different charities in our Miami-Dade county areas.

Please call Maria Zuniga at 305 646 7020 or email to zuniga@unitedwaymiami.org for tickets.

Thank you, I’m looking forward to see you on the 27th.

Good news about Art Shows!

Good news about Art Shows!

{Well, as everyone knows, the incredible week of Art Basel 2008 came and went. There were many predictions of lower attendance, lagging sales, and economic distress for the art business. But, at least at a few shows, that seems to have been mistaken. Below are three press releases that I received recently talking about how well the shows went. It looks like even though we are going through some hard times, people still know that art is important to life.

Check out the press releases below, then come talk about them in the Life Is Art Forums.}

PRESS RELEASE 1: PULSE Miami Defies Art Market Forecast With Solid Sales and Heavy VIP Attendance

PULSE Prize awarded to Emilio Chapela Perez

New York, December 12, 2008 – PULSE Miami concluded its largest edition following a week of solid sales and rave reviews by press and public alike, cementing its status as the strongest fair after Art Basel Miami Beach despite recent economic developments. “While it was not the feverish, trend-oriented seller’s market of 2007, all our dealers said that buyers were serious collectors who carefully selected art, often placing reserves that were finalized later in the week,” said Helen Allen, Executive Director of PULSE. Twelve thousand visited the fair over the course of its five-day run, which was approximately the same attendance as PULSE New York in March 2008.

Following a well attended VIP preview, sales picked up and by Thursday, the mood and weather had turned to sunny and warm. The dealers attributed the fair’s success to the quality of its production and of works for sale. This includes Jamie Angell, owner of Toronto’s Angell Gallery, who said: “If Angell Gallery had not been accepted into PULSE, I had no intention of exhibiting in Miami this year. Next to Basel it’s the finest fair. It’s professionally run, well laid out and showcases respected galleries representing quality artists.” Nick Lawrence, owner of New York gallery Freight + Volume, reported a sold-out booth and commented that, “surprisingly, this fair turned out better than last year’s. It’s renewed my faith that the art market follows its own rules. A lot of deals were closed after midnight at the Raleigh and Le Baron.”

One trend noted by multiple galleries was an interest in new media works, particularly videos mounted in artists’ frames, which were snapped up by buyers. These included bitforms gallery, whose booth sold out of a video “shadow box” by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, which began at $90,000, while Angles Gallery experienced heavy sales of Ori Gersht’s Falling Bird. The edition of eight began at $45,000. Other new media successes included a sell out of Siebren Versteeg’s series of large internet-enabled touch screen monitors at Max Protetch. The work was produced in an edition of 10, and started at $25,000. A real time 3D animation by artist John Gerrard, represented by Ernst Hilger, sold multiple works at $70,000 a piece.

A full, day-by-day, sales report is available upon request.

A long roster of VIPs were in attendance, including Academy Award winning actor Forest Whitaker, artists Chuck Close, Takashi Murakami and Leo Villareal; LVMH Art Advisor Herve Mikaeloff; Director of the Brooklyn Museum and collector Arnold Lehman; Armory Show Director Katelijne de Backer; and a flock of A-list collectors including Shelley and Phillip Aarons, Marty Marguiles, the Rubell family, Joel and Sherry Malin, Raul and Lilly de Molina, Tony Goldman and Jean Pigozzi, as well as Diane Ackerman, Laura Skoler and John and Julie Thornton from Texas. Also noteworthy was the presence of major dealers who were seen cruising the aisles of the fair, among them Jeffrey Deitch, Tim Blum and Sean Kelly. They were joined by a host of museum curators and other professionals, notably SITE Santa Fe Director Laura Steward Heon, David Smith Foundation Director Peter Stevens, Donald Judd Foundation Director Barbara Hunt McLanahan, and newly appointed Andy Warhol Museum Curator of Art Eric Shiner.

Other highlights of PULSE Miami included New York nightlife and fashion icon Amanda Lepore’s performance and preview of her new limited-edition fragrance Amanda, which was produced by exhibitor Artware Editions. Envoy Enterprises had a surprise hit with their performance by Gill and Jill Bumby. The anonymous duo sold visitors “fair and accurate appraisals of their appearance” typed on notecards for $5 a piece, which drew crowds.

The Financial Times and CORE: conversations drew great praise from attendees who packed the café for the series and PULSE’s original programming was also in full force, with major installations throughout the fair, as was a new PULSE PLAY> selection.

GEISAI Miami, produced by Kaikai Kiki, was a runaway hit. The fair, which allowed 26 artists to exhibit without commercial representation, was thronged with curators, gallery owners and press. Brooklyn-based painter Asha Canalos sold out her entire booth to German collectors in one fell swoop, while Japanese photographer Keita Sugiura placed scores of works in the hands of collectors that included SITE Santa Fe Director Laura Steward Heon, New York gallerist and PULSE exhibitor Max Protetch, and Italian collector Jean Pigozzi. All 26 artists were in agreement that the fair was an incomparable, positive experience. Painter Nikki Katsikas, of Sea Cliff, New Jersey, was the recipient of the inaugural GEISAI Miami award.

PULSE Prize Miami 2008
The $2,500 PULSE Prize, sponsored by The Financial Times, was awarded to Emilio Chapela Perez, represented by EDS Galeria of Mexico City in PULSE’s IMPULSE section.

PULSE New York
PULSE returns to Pier 40 on March 5-8, 2009, for its fourth New York edition. Pier 40 is located at West Houston Street and the West Side Highway.

PRESS RELEASE 3: Miami 08’s Most Talked About Art Fair Draws a Record 30,000 Visitors

Miami 08’s Most Talked About Art Fair Draws a Record 30,000 Visitors

MIAMI–Huge crowds embraced SCOPE’s raw floored pioneer spirit, fueling sales and shifting focus from tough economic times to notable optimism. SCOPE Miami 08 hosted its 90 exhibitors from 22 countries in a new 60,000 square foot pavilion centrally located at Midtown Miami. Undeniably the most talked-about fair during this year’s Olympics of the art world, Miami’s original emerging contemporary art fair drew an enthusiastic audience of 30,000 art world VIPs, collectors, and art lovers as it returned for its seventh year December 3-7.

Recent new comers to SCOPE, included Jacob Karpio Galeria | San Jose, Invisible- Exports | New York, Like the Spice | Brooklyn, Y Gallery | Queens, Ark | Jakarta, ARATANIURANO | Tokyo, Galerie Nikolaus Ruzicska | Salzburg, Gallery Peithner-Lichtenfels | Vienna, all reported strong sales with Jacob Karpio exclaiming, “SCOPE is the pioneering fair to break the monopoly in the market, opening the door for galleries around the world and providing viewers with a real-time survey of emerging art. SCOPE took a risk and was a huge success.” Benjamin Tischer of INVISIBLE-EXPORTS beamed, “Traffic was wonderful, the new location brilliant. I had a consistent stream of visitors telling me that SCOPE was the busiest fair.”

Sarah Douglas of ARTINFO reported, “Despite the gloomy global economic conditions, things seemed, rather improbably, to be chugging along over at the SCOPE fair and its new sister event, ART ASIA.” SCOPE Miami’s dynamic partnership with ART ASIA, maintained unique identities with separate pavilions, presenting a combined 135 exhibitors from over 36 countries. The partnership helped to increase audience attendance while attracting new collectors, curators and press. Expanded museum quality programming, which included a well-attended lecture series, was a result of this new partnership. Both fairs look forward to a similar relationship with ART ASIA’s debut in Basel, Switzerland on June 10th, 2009.

“This year, SCOPE definitely was my favorite fair, not only because the work for sale was superb, but their commitment to inviting local artists and musicians to take part in the festivities is refreshing.” said Jose Duran of the Miami New Times. Spotted early at the SCOPE Pavilion were collectors Melva Bucksbaum, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Richard and Eileen Ekstract, Michael and Susan Hort, Stephanie Ignacio, Arnold Lehman, Takashi Murakami, Todd Oldham and Charles Saatchi. The SCOPE Collectors’ tours attracted members from Art in Embassies, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Christie’s Education-New York, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Miami Art Museum, MoMA, National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, The Phillips Collection, RBC Financial Group, Smithsonian American Art Museum, TATE Modern, and Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.

Much viewed and reviewed, programming at SCOPE was curated by the SCOPE Foundation, newly named the ARTIST FOUNDATION 501 (c)(3), Miami 08 Foundation highlights included

• SCOPE’s third edition of Museum Presents, Narrative/Non-Narrative: Contemporary Artists from the CIFO Programs, a nonprofit exhibition focusing on Latin American artists co-presented and curated by The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO).

• SCOPE’s Collector Mentorship Auction also celebrated its third auction with competitive bidding for its ten collectors: Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Lisa Kirk, Arnold Lehman, Kathryn Mikesell, Dennis Oppenheim, Dennis Scholl, Nancy Seltzer, Andres Serrano, Rob Teeters, and Ultra Violet. Past participants included Louisa Buck, Melva Bucksbaum, Frank Cohen, Bob Colacello, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Eileen and Richard Ekstract, John Friedman, Raymond Learsy, Arnold Lehman, Adam Lindemann, Enrique Norten, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Lowell Pettit, Julia Peyton-Jones, Kay Saatchi, Kenny Schachter, Terrie Sultan and Rick Wester. The fourth edition of the CMA will reach outside of the art world to include titans of industry, tastemakers, and iconoclasts.

• Thirteen projects were presented, included: The Girl Project, GLOWLAB, mr.brainwash, and Matthew Porter’s Startled Birds. FriendsWithYou’s Fun House, transformed SCOPE’s VIP Lounge into an interactive bounce house, a crowd favorite.

Returning galleries posted strong results with Toby Clarke from the Fine Art Society (FAS) reporting that Annie Kevans, who only joined the gallery three months ago, sold 12 portraits, all priced at $4,300, while a painting by Keith Coventry went for $40,000 and another by Stephen Goddard for $27,800. “Long time SCOPE exhibitor Helmut Schuster of Galerie Schuster | Frankfurt/Berlin commented, “SCOPE is no longer a satellite fair and has made its mark for presenting the young and emerging contemporary artists. SCOPE is what collectors and curators want to see- the buzz about the fair is proof! I thought because of the problems in the market that it would be harder to sell, but the first day relieved all my anxieties.”

With total sales of over $100 million and attendance of over 250,000 visitors, SCOPE Art Fairs have drawn wide media attention including The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Art in America, and ArtNet Magazine, which wrote, “Of the various art fairs in Miami, it was SCOPE that served up the best and most playful energy, both inside and out.”

With the decision that would form his career, legendary silent film star Douglas Fairbanks, who remains the most famous of the Zorros, made this mix of comedy and derring-do reluctantly, as a change-of-pace from his modern-dress playboy roles. The Mark of Zorro is the swashbuckling story of a nineteenth century Robin Hood intent on freeing his beloved San Juan Capistrano from an evil Governor and his lecherous Captain.

With Andrei Shchetinin and Aleksei Nejmyshev
Father and Son won the FIPRESCI prize at the Cannes Film Festival with the following note from the critics who gave the award: “For brilliant images and the director’s original way of depicting the powerful bond that unites a father and a son.” The film is part of a trilogy begun with Mother and Son, and will end with the planned Two Brothers and a Sister. With one of the most poetic films ever made, Sokorov shows that intensity of emotions and imagery associated with human intimacy does not need to be associated with sexuality (which some critics read into the film’s premise, incorrectly, according to the director himself).
WINNER: Cannes Film Festival FIPRESCI Prize Russian Guild of Film Critics Golden Aries for Art Direction.
“ACHINGLY BEAUTIFUL… dreamily seductive and profoundly disturbing”–BBC
“LIKE A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM. Its images and emotions are vivid, disquieting and also hermetic, and while it may frustrate your desire for clear storytelling and psychological transparency, it has an intensity that surpasses understanding.” -New York Times

On Sunday, January 4th, the 2nd annual Miami Cyclocross race will take place at Oleta River State Park. Cyclo-cross (sometimes cyclocross, CX, CCX, cyclo-X or ‘cross’) is a form of bicycle racing. Races take place typically in the autumn and winter and consists of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5 km or 1.5–2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike whilst navigating the obstruction and remount in one motion. It’s part road bike, part mountain bike and part steeplechase.
And it’s exploding in popularity.
It’s cyclocross, and it is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the bicycle world.

The Miami race is one of a eight race state wide series and will feature a course that includes asphalt, grass, sand, clay and concrete that will require the racers to dismount a few times per lap in a unique Miami setting. In addition to the serious cyclist categories (Cat 1-5 mens and womens according to USA Cycling rules) there will be races from children 6 years old to grand masters 55+. Although the serious cyclists may have a bicycle specifically for Cyclocross, just about any hybrid, mountain or average road bike will suffice. Racers will be treated to an enthusiastic crowd, lots of ringing cowbells, free Belgian waffles and a fun time overall. Double points in the Florida Cyclocross series.

MacBeth Free Flamingo Park Miami Beach 1/9-11/09

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, January 9 – 10 – 11, 7:00 p.m.
Flamingo Park, Meridian Avenue + 12 Street
Shakespeare’s MACBETH
Produced by Shakespeare Miami

All performances are free no tickets required

Friday, January 9, Opening Night, 7:00pm performance

Saturday, January 10, 7:00 pm Performance

Sunday,  January 11, 7:00 pm Performance

Do… Bring a blanket or low beach chairs. There is no “seating” at Shakespeare in the Park. An extra blanket comes in handy because sometimes it gets a little nippy.

Do… Bring a picnic.   Pick up a dinner ‘to go’ from a local Restaurant or have your neighborhood market make up a gourmet picnic for you!

Do… Bring the family.  Our shows are perfect for kids 8 and up. This production is a little more for older children.  There is realistic violence in this play including Swordfights, verbal abuse and of course, Macbeth loses his head in the end. There is a lot of blood and there are scary witches, too, so it is not a good show for toddlers.

Do… Bring some cash or a check to throw in the donation basket! All funds go to our education programs

Don’t … Bring tall chairs unless you plan to sit towards the back of the field.

Don’t …Bring Dogs.  With picnics and people sitting on the ground, dogs tend to annoy other patrons in the park.

Don’t… Go back stage to visit friends or family members No one is permitted backstage without a staff ID.

Do… Find an usher to send flowers or notes back stage, the actors appreciate it.

The word paraphernalia has evolved over time. What is now loosely defined as “equipment, apparatus or furnishing used in or necessary for a particular activity”, historically referred to a bride’s property beyond her dowry. Paraphernalia as a word, has taken a new connotation and has become more intertwined with the realm of taboo. Paraphernalia is a means to an end, and is applicable in almost every aspect of life.

The humorous, historical, political and personal aspects of the word or idea of “paraphernalia” is explored in the paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, video and photography in this nationally juried exhibition.

The Garden and Grotto of Manifest Destiny
From the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock desert of Nevada, to the Bakehouse Art Complex here in Miami, artist Randy Polumbo has taken his 30 foot installation across the country. The grotto will be on display in the main parking lot of the Bakehouse from Thursday, December 4th through January 25th, 2009.
Come experience this interactive installation! A flower field comprised of bizarre satellite-shaped blossoms gathered around and inside a modified shipping container lures the viewer into a grotto. These techno-organic LED illuminated flowers with solar panel petals and stamens are made of softly glowing sex toys. Set in the BAC parking lot, this modified ARMY container, punctured with baby bottle nipples cast out of recycled glass amid a pollination frenzy of solar flowers, creates a soft glowing subconscious garden. Visitors become pollinators, tempted by the glass nipples to penetrate the grotto.

60+ Artist Studios
BAC artists will open their studios to the public for this event.

The four-day event will begin with a private Preview Evening on January 14 at 5:30 p.m. and the fair will be open from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday. The Preview Evening will give prominent collectors, curators and art advisors the first opportunity to preview and purchase a stellar array of paintings, photography, video, sculptures, functional objects and design from more than 80 prestigious national and international dealers. The galleries will present a range of contemporary art, from museum quality works by luminaries such as Gerard Richter and Robert Rauschenberg, to top works by established mid-career artists as well as the latest from emerging artists – all in a variety of styles and media.

Fair director Fran Kaufman’s innovative programming this year includes the creation of Museum Curator Program in which prominent museum curators and art professionals from around the country will bring collector and donor groups to the palmbeach3 fair and participate in lectures and VIP programs. Participating curators include Eric C. Shiner, the Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Christopher Phillips, Senior Curator at New York’s International Center of Photography, among others.

In addition, palmbeach’s Florida Museum Partnership Program has been vastly expanded to include an unprecedented 20 fine arts, decorative arts and design institutions, including the Wolfsonian and St. Petersburg Museum. The inaugural Designer Committee is chaired by the internationally renowned interior designer Juan Montoya of New York and Paris. He is joined on the committee by Celerie Kemble; Bruce Bierman; Carlton Varney; Geoffrey Bradfield; Jennifer Garrigues; Lisa Erdman and many other leaders in the field. In addition, Kaufman has considerably expanded the fair’s Host Committee made up of such prominent collectors as Joan and Charles Lazarus, founder of Toys R Us; prominent collectors and philanthropists Dale and Doug Anderson, Ted and Ruth Baum, and Marvin and Elayne Mordes; philanthropist and arts patron Emily Fisher Landau; and collector Flora Major of Sarasota and New York.

Other efforts to heighten the art and design collecting experience at the fair include assembling some innovative, special exhibitions, including a collection of Romare Bearden’s Caribbean watercolors; Nathalia Edenmont photographs; George Segal sculpture; and an interesting selection of work from the estate of the late Leslie Lerner, a Florida artist with ties to The Norton Museum, Ringling Museum and The Katonah Museum of Art. The fair also added Artist and Designer Conversations to the lecture series, which features intimate discussions with Juan Montoya; Wendell Castle, who is represented in the permanent collections of over 70 museums; and Steve McCurry, noted photographer and member of Magnum Photos.
