Gema Corredera now needs your help

FROM: Ever Chavez, FUNDarte, Inc.

Dear friends and colleagues,
As you may know, by several media reports, Gema Corredera has been in a detention center in Puerto Rico since November 14. Apparently, she was detained at the airport due to some random immigration operation they were conducting there. Gema is in the process of adjusting her legal resident status through the Cuban Adjustment Act. However, the authoirities in charge of the case have taken longer than expected to release her under humanitarian parole, in spite of the efforts of her family, friends, and lawyers involved. She is facing health problems while in detention.
As a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and assisiting artists in the world, we have presented Gema (Gema y Pavel) in several occassions, for your enjoyment. Now we need your help. FUNDarte is joining efforts to help Gema Corredera in these difficult times.
An account has been created in Banco Popular (BPPR): Comité Pro-Fondos Gema Corredera – Account Number 203336470 to cover her legal and personal expenses. Any deposit and assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. These are the branches of Banco Popular in Miami. Please go today to the one closest to you and help Gema.
Thanks!

Art Fairs to catch while you are doing Art Basel 2008

{There are a few smaller fairs that I want to mention specifically that might have escaped your notice. Sure, all the big fairs are great, but check these out and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. PooL Art Fair at the Cavalier Hotel is definitely one of my favorites. I love the little lounge they created. Art Now at the South Seas. And INK Miami at the Dorchester. There is also The Artists Fair at Shelborne, but we have not made it by, yet. So, after your brain has gone into overload at the massive white tents, take a little break and stop by these funky boutique hotels to see some exciting, energetic artwork.}

Massive update to the Art Basel 2008 Guide

{For those of you who have not checked the page in a while, I just wanted to let you know that I have added a LOT of stuff to the Art Basel Guide over the past few days. If you want to make sure you do not miss out, I have put all the updates on the Guide page. I have also updated the condensed Schedule page.}

Join us for Art Basel events at Spirit del Art Gallery in Mary Brickell Village

We cordially invite you to an exciting week of events at Spirit Del Art
Upcoming events Celebrating Art Basel Miami Beach 2008
We are pleased to announce the exhibition of various Latin American and American artists who are captivating collectors and art lovers.

Participating artists:
Dec. 3 Wednesday
Carlos Romaguera (Puerto Rico), painter, has participated in many collective and individual expositions. In all of them he has received very positive reviews. For Romaguera, colour is life, it is the energy that surrounds us and transforms us into gifts of beauty.

Dec. 4 Thursday
Marcia Ramos-Perello (Chile), painting. Her lyrical abstractions establish another perceptive possibility in art: intended to be a medium for the invisible energy of the universe. With a radical rupture with reality and the complete abandon of representation, Ramos-Perello creates a world of introspection and inner realities.

Dec. 6 Saturday
Natalia Preciado (US), painter and photographer, specialized in recycled materials as support. She currently studies Fashion Design for Film at Cooper Union University, NY, and she has received awards in Florida and nationally for her paintings.

Amparo Garzon (Colombia), painting and sculpture. Her art evokes the aspiring almost none existent today, to the wholeness as a creator. Not only is the creation capable of constituting a complete and coherent universe, but the marvel of enabling a unified existence with the worlds she creates.

This exhibition will be open until December 30, 2008. Featured artists will be present during this exhibition and public will be able to speak with them.

Dec. 7 Sunday
Special exclusive exhibition of posters by acclaimed Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Born in Medellin, 1932, is a Colombian neo figurative artist, coming to prominence when he won the first prize at the Salon de Artistas Colombianos in 1959. His work includes still life and landscapes, but Botero tends to primarily focus on situational portraiture noted for their exaggerated proportions and the corpulence of the human figures and animal figures. His works are informed by a Colombian upbringing and social commentary is woven throughout his work.

LIPSTICK BY ROSARIO BOND

Rosario Bond proposes neo-expressionistic paintings made out of thick layers of impasto, set over multiple drippings, disrupted lines, and child-like figures where individuals, objects, and nature intertwine in voracious relationships. LIPSTICK depicts parodies of icons, such as rock stars, models, and other iconic portraits represented through gestural brushstrokes and a bright and intense palette. Bond dislocates the modern narrative, dismantling logic and linearity in the character’s connections in the scene. She tackles and traps her figures in a challenging Meta discourse dominated by parody and humor.

Her paintings are collections of personal mythologies combined with critical imagery, posed over disrupted settings and dislocated compositions inhabited by unusual and serie objects. Her works are a monumental palimpsest of delirious and contrasting characters that allude to the feminine condition.

In her hectic and fevered paintings, full of hallucinating entities transported by rambling composition and restless scribbling lines, Bond establishes a radical dialogue with the Contemporary German neo-expressionists.

The painting Lipstick, 2008 depicts three women’s faces with sarcastic expressions. The one at the left center shows her sensuous red lips collated over the canvas, creating a sense of derision and a burlesque atmosphere. The picture plane is delimitated by two thin legs balance on a woman’s red heels, in a metaphorical allusion of an exaggerated and stereotyped femininity. The blue and turquoise pastel colors point out to sarcastic references to the feminine condition. The dominant scribbling lines on the canvas disfigure and distort shapes and forms, generating a chaotic composition. In Lipstick, Bond satirizes on the social identity of women. In Bunny Girl, 2008 the artist again refers to the feminine condition. The Bunny Girl is cynically outlined on the right side of the composition; in half body shaped by fuzzy colors and disrupted lines, she is a mutant and critical being. One of Bond’s main concerns is the status of women. In the painting Shopping Spree, 2008 Bond depicts a delirious shopping spree of three women, the one in the middle holding a Prada purse as a trophy. It is dominated by a rough composition and a disorderly combination of figures; the women are surrounded by a chaotic world. The work alludes to the wild consumerism of the day among women. In Peacock Dancers, 2007 two stylized feminine figures pose as cheerful dancers surrounded in festive feathers . Disruptive broken lines saturate the highly dramatic scene. Again, Bond’s strong allusions to critical femininity are present.

The canvas Teddy Bear and His Friends, 2008 shows numerous child like figures, distorted and covered by extreme drippings, in high contrasting yellows, reds and blues. There is a highly saturated composition crowed with curvilinear traits and irregular spots and outlines. Bond’s approach to the works gives prevalence to feelings and moods rather than to an objective realistic representation. Spontaneous lines and forms give birth to imaginary entities that relate to childhood memories infused with a comedic stanza. Bond proposes a sarcastic Teddy Bear’s vision surrounded by multiple mordant creatures that sharply stare at us as an incisive allusion to infancy.

In the work Family Furies, 2008 Bond presents two child like beings outlined in green colors and delineated through irregular contours. Multiple scribbled lines sketch the body and face; the deeply emotional eyes express sadness, concern, and isolation as humanized references – perhaps in allusion to a personal mythology or an autobiographical stance. In The Gallerist, 2008 Bond pursues the same approach of using collected memories on which to base her paintings. A derisive goat’s face and a comical blue visage stand over a crowed landscape of imaginary and distorted flowers, rivers, and plants. Here, the artist mockingly alludes to today’s complex artist-gallery relationship . Again, irregular outlines, multiple drippings, color spots and disfigured entities profile the mordant Bond’s approach to painting.

Materia Gris, 2007 exhibits a gigantic black and white dream landscape with curious flowers and segments of imaginary architectures. The calm atmosphere is disrupted by the organic violent lines of plants, and by the asymmetric composition that dislocates the realistic order of elements. This painting becomes a very peculiar work in this show. Bond has eliminated all beings and switched to a reflection on nature.

Bond’s provocative and disruptive paintings radically distanced from beauty and harmony establish an artistic connection to the highly politicized German Neue Wilde movement. In the rough approach of Jonathan Meese, Andre Butzer and Albert Oehlen, Bond offers an abysal reflection of our unsettling world.

Milagros Bello, Ph.D.
Curator of the show.

Art Basel 2008 Weekend at Miami Beach Cinematheque

DEC 04 THU: Opening Night Reception!
8:30-10pm: A Walk “Temps sur temps”
BERLIN 1993-1996 by LESLY HAMILTON
A photographic/audio-visual installation

“Before questioning, I found myself drawn to quite a bleak attraction when meandering between Postdammer Platz and Unter den Linden in Berlin: the “EST” underground stations reopened after twenty nine years in darkness. Mythical places, these were penciled-in on my map until then. High above the vast gloomy no-man’s land was the big round Deutsche S-Bahn up on a pole at the entrance, and only the aroma of grilled “bockwurst” from the kiosk nearby uplifted the scene. I was engaged on a path leading to an obsessional quest about signs and tracks of time and the ephemeral traces of man, no doubt inspired by these surroundings where the burden of history had left its marks. It became my territory, without counting how often I would come back from Paris by night train, more often by bus. I remained attentive like the hunter waiting for prey, like the archaeologist seeking new pieces. The swift indifference or aloof respect of passers-by gave me the incentive to pursue with determination a long walk originally never planned.”—Lesly Hamilton

All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.

DEC 05 FRI:
7:30-8:30pm: A Walk “Temps sur temps”
8:30-11pm: CHINA: The Rising Tide
A film by ROBERT ADANTO, with ZHANG O

“Robert Adanto’s The Rising Tide shows the world how China’s contemporary artists are making sense of their crazy “brave new world”, the improbable mash-up of totalitarianism and capitalism gone wild. An often surprising and thought-provoking documentary, the featured artists throw down a collective glove to the rest of the world and declare their Sino-centric Renaissance. The rest of us better make an effort to grasp what their work is about, or get out of the way. An “eye-opener” in every sense of the word, if you are an artist, curator, or teacher be sure to catch this film.”—Mark Lynch, Host of “Inquiry” on WIC. The Rising Tide was shot in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen in the summer of 2006 and completed in October of 2007 and was recently part of CHINA NOW in the United Kingdom, as part of Constant Stream: China 08 at the Royal College of Art in London, where it screened with a film by acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. See two excerpts of the film HERE
The film will be followed by Q&A with director Robert Adanto
and artist Zhang O.
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.
This one has limited seating.

DEC 06 SAT:
7:30-8:30pm: A Walk “Temps sur temps”
8:30-9:30pm: Trance
A sound and video experience by PEARL GLUCK

Trance is a multimedia site specific installation which explores a neighborhood from the inside out. Using documentary video and found sound, Trance blurs the boundaries between insider and outsider, past and present, fitting in or being exiled. By partnering with local composers, Pearl Gluck creates a documentary visualscape made up of found images and sounds collected in the specific neighborhoods over the course of one week. Two of the Trance installations will be featured this evening: Trance: plac Z.ydowski, Krakow which visits what’s left on the 200 year old once Jewish market square in Kazimierz, and Trance: Eldridge Street, New York, which visits the Lower East Side’s interconnected and still separate Asian and Jewish communities. In the spirit of ambiguity and confusion, we will also feature another soundscape, a “soundwalk” through Hasidic Williamsburg hosted by Pearl Gluck. . .with separate walks for men and women.
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.

9:40pm, 10:20pm, 11pm: Speaker Box
A performance in a transparent cube by BELAXIS BUIL (showtimes: 15 min. each)

The idea behind “Speaker Box” is to manipulate sound waves into becoming a source of energy or language. In this instance I become a foreign object which is contained within the parameters I know exist. I use the the sounds composed as music to entice the viewer into a mind trip of where I stand within my territory. The speakers that are placed around myself and facing the audience create “voice boxes”, that ultimately become sound barriers and lost translations.
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.

07 SUN:
7:30-8:30pm: A Walk “Temps sur temps”
8:30-10pm: Parallax
A triptych screen projection by ROSALIND SCHNEIDER
1973 16mm 21 min. (transferred to digital format)
Concept, Camera, Editing: Rosalind Schneider
Score: Michael Dreyfuss
Choreography: Edith Stephen
Performance: The Edith Stephen Dance Company

Parallax is a dance film that explores the sensuous flow of the female and male body. Formal relationships achieve a visual extension in space through concave mirror reflection and the juxtaposition of three projections. The dancers separate and come together to abstract each other in strong compositional movement and rich color. Their bodies superimposed in black and white
negative and color create a surrealistic environment that defines the synchronous flow within the three screens. Recipient of the 2008 Women’s Film Preservation Award Grant
“Parallax is at once invitingly sensual and conceptually arresting.”-Washington Post
“Pictorially similar to an enormous fresco, Parallax moves its characters through a dance without time and perhaps without end.” Anna Canepa, -Art Workers Newsletter
“Parallax is like a Reubens or a Renoir, it is so explicitly voluptuous.”
-Holly Beye, Woodstock Times
“It is a beautiful film.” -Jonas Mekas, The Village Voice
All MBC Art Basel events are complimentary admission.

OPENING RECEPTION FOR
Art Déco: Un Tour de France
Photographs by Alice Goldhagen

The style that became known as Art Deco first came to the attention of the world in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. While the Art Deco style is perhaps best known in its architectural expression, artists and designers also incorporated elements of the style into their designs for such diverse items as jewelry, textiles, furniture, graphic arts, fashion, and transportation.

Miami-based visual artist and photographer Alice Goldhagen brings a 21st century perspective to Art Deco architecture and ornamentation throughout France. Her photographs evoke the elegance and sophistication of the 1920s and 30s.

The exhibit is open daily (except Mondays) from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, until 03 January 2009. Free admission.

Art Déco: Un Tour de France is made possible with the generous support of Rex Art, Dreyfus Ashby & Co. and the Alliance Francaise of Miami.

Location: Art Deco Education Center at Historic City Hall, 1130 Washington Av, Miami Beach

Back to Paradise started back 2003 @ Laundry Bar during WMC 2003
Since it’s been always a successful event! It’s in memory of the NYC –Club Paradise Garage!

The Music
The unique and eclectic style of disco and dance musics played at the Garage gave rise to the descriptive terms “garage,” “garage style” and “garage classic” (to describe a record that was made famous or is associated with the Paradise Garage). When the term “garage music” is used in reference to the Paradise Garage, it does not exclusively mean house music, although certain house tracks may be considered to be garage classics. It will be a wide variety of Funk, Rare Grooves, Garage, Classics as well as the actual Soulful and intelligent House music which naturally would select a more mature crowd.

The DJ’s are nationally and internationally as well as locally renowned Artists, such as
“Maestro” DAVID SOLERO – Good Peoples Entertainment, best known for his amazing sets at the Beach Radio and its hay days and actually for the
“SoBe Soul” events @ 305 Music Lounge (former Laundry Bar) as well as the
“Local Underground” (Downtown Miami)

And RON D *8* LIM – Power Of Love Productions, best known for his numerous special events at Stints such as Nikki Beach Café, The Raleigh, Shine, Spiegelworld, Mansion, B.E.D, Karu & Y Ultralounge, The Vagabond(Miami-Beach) The Tunnel, Twilo, Vinyl and Cielo (NYC) as well as been titled a House Music Pioneer by New Times (Humberto Guida)!

Legendary DJ and producer of International hits:
“WORK IT OUT”, “RISE UP”, “DESTINATION”
Also featuring our superstar residents:
ARMAND PENA
&
LOUIS DEE
About DJ DISCIPLE:
To try to categorize Disciple is pointless, such is his diverse talent. Happily surging between dance music genres, he’s the only DJ in New York that plays music for both the traditional and trendy scenes. His UK profile is legendary, working in more clubs than any American DJ to ever grace those shores. For the past 12 year Disciple played in at least fifty clubs a year for the last ten years. With his music and DJ performances known all over the world, it’s been Disciple’s voice that has become the catalyst for quality dance music in the last two years. The voice behind ’Work it out’, ‘Changes’, ‘Rise up’ and his new appearance on ‘Destination’ added another notch to his career. Nominated for 2008 Beatport artist of the year, Disciple’s 2006 Ibiza smash hit ‘Work It Out’ got picked up by Universal’s House- Trained records in the UK and play-listed on Radio1 while appearing on MTV at the same time. Disciple’s last release “Rise up” was another underground anthem thanks to remixers Jesse Garcia and Dub Deluxe who bought the record to number one in Spain. Roger Sanchez championed the record so long that he put it on his Release Yourself compilation. Even with the labels notoriety, Disciple’s presence in New York has not slowed down.
With the world literally his oyster Disciple is reassuringly grounded as to his future and his role in general in dance music: “For me it’s important to remember that DJing made me what I am and that’s always the first for me. I see dance music going through a very big change shortly. It can’t stay the way it is and I aim to change with it. You have to. Ultimately it’s all music and if you love and understand music, you’ll know that it’s fluid, forever flowing, forever changing. It’s wonderful to embrace that and go with the flow but yet always be original, always be yourself.

Reflections on Art Basel 2008 Days 1 and 2 Monday and Tuesday

{Aight, well, I’m not big on the review thing. I mean, who cares what I think, anyway. But it’s cold and I’m hacked, so I figure I would rant a little bit before I crash. Yeah, we started on Monday.
1) Do NOT try to do too much. We did that tonight, and missed out on fun we could have had by trying to have too much fun.
2) Remember to schedule time to park and walk! Sometimes parking can be a mission. You can lose quite a bit of time. So, if you have not scheduled for it, you will quickly get behind.
3) Small events often equal big energy. Went to Diaspora Gallery and Seth Jason on Monday, both were really good.
4) Knight Foundation. Very cool. Google it. Knightpulse.org
5) The winners on Tuesday night were definitely Aqua for best fest, O.H.W.O.W. for far and away the place to be and most energy, and Punk Rock Bourgeoisie for absolute coolest piece of work and for surprising us because we did not even know it was open.
The rest of the fairs were kind of eh. Got turned away at a few events. “You’re not on the list.” Yeah, because I been spending all my time working on the arfing Guide and Schedule and haven’t had time to email. Whatever. So much more to do.
6) Be sure to just randomly charge into any place you happen to see that is open that might be cool. This is what happened with us and Punk Rock Bourgeoisie. We went the wrong way and happened to go by it and made the guy stay even though he was about to leave and it was a fantastic capper to the night.
7) WTF is up with this weather??? I hate the cold.
I might post photos at some date when I have recovered. See you out there.}

Pablo Contrisciani Open Studio for Art Basel Week

“ENERGIES”
NEW PAINTINGS
BY PABLO CONTRISCIANI

2013 NORTH MIAMI AVE.
MIAMI FL 33127
It will be open to the public during Art Basel Miami Beach
December 3rd-7th
noon to 8pm
The exhibition runs until December 19th by appointment only

Untitled # 44. 48″ X 72″ Mixed media on canvas 2008

In the series Energies Pablo Contrisciani’s paintings are the representation of different kind of moods altogether inside of one frame. They have an intense and sensual sense of unity. The shapes had color that was partly knocked down, but mostly electric, and they were improvised and spontaneous but at the same time precise.
The paintings play between these two elements: shape and color. Sometimes they merge, and sometimes there is a tension between them. This play in tension between pictorial surfaces and applied materials creates complex and straightforward layers of expressive abstractions.
These series of paintings unifies oppositions and energizes a blend of rational and emotional notions. They juxtapose humble elements with big gestures and make references to pop culture, to spiritual narratives and to some historical concepts.
About the Artist
Pablo Contrisciani is an Argentinean artist residing in Miami from 1998.
He earned his Master in Painting at the National University of Fine Arts of La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has recently participated in exhibitions at Karpio-Facchini Gallery, Miami; Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York; Light Contemporary, London; Mackey Gallery, Houston; Solar Art Gallery, East Hampton and ArtCenter/South Florida, Miami.

Opening Reception December 5th , 7 – 9 PM
The Fredric Snitzer Gallery is
pleased to present DEATH BY BASEL, an exhibition featuring artists from Japan, France, Norway and the US. The exhibition, selected by Agatha Wara and Antonin Gaultier, will coincide with this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, from December 2 – 7, 2008.

The who-done-it of the Miami art week, or more importantly, what has died or is in the process of coming to an end? Death by Basel is a reaction to the overwhelming commercialization of the art space.

Basel is a symbol of something much greater happening today, the artists in this exhibition are all creating new works exploring themes of excess, consumption, the relation between art and money, auto-destruction, and of course – death. The artists approach these themes with mischievous beauty, questioning the very idea of doing a show during Art Basel Miami Beach.

The works will include video, sculpture and performances throughout the week of the exhibition with several artists exhibiting in the US for the first time.

Art Now Fair at the South Seas Information

Art Now Fair is pleased to announce our return to Miami Beach, December 4 – 7, 2008. After our Miami Beach premier and a successful New York City fair in March, Art Now Fair is looking forward to continuing to support established and emerging galleries committed to thinking outside the box and experimenting with the artwork and artists they represent.

Art Now Fair will take place at the ocean-front South Seas Hotel located at 1751 Collins Avenue. The South Seas Hotel is located in the heart of the art deco district and next to other major fairs, including Art Basel, Bridge Art Fair, INK Miami and Aqua. The South Seas Hotel boasts an ocean front view from its luxurious poolside cafe and lounge and is considered among the best boutique hotels in Miami Beach.

Continuing to represent diverse galleries, Art Now Fair will feature over 40 contemporary exhibitors from across the U.S. and International. Galleries will exhibit in spacious rooms on the first and second floors of the hotel as well as in booths in the front lobby and the poolside terrace. We are excited to build upon our reputation as a diverse fair offering a unique selection of galleries and artists to the public while maintaining a comfortable and open atmosphere.

Art Now Fair will be hosting an opening reception in the lobby of the South Seas Hotel. The reception will take place on Friday, December 5th, 2008, from7 – 9 pm, and is free and open to the public. It will benefit Neat Stuff, Miami based organization helping abused and other at – risk children.

Art Now Fair looks forward to our second year in Miami Beach and hopes to continue to inspire viewers and encourage them to experience art in a new way. By opening the lines of communication between artist and viewer, we hope to encourage the growth of artists and galleries who are thinking of art in new and innovative ways.

Art Loves Architecture: David Adjaye
Saturday, December 6, 2008
9 p.m.
A conversation between architect David Adjaye and artists Matthew Ritchie and Teresita Fernandez about art and architecture, moderated by Aaron Betsky, Director, Cincinnati Art Museum,
The Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Invitation cards available at VIP and Information Desks.
Limited seating. Door opens 8.30 p.m.
Information | Florida Office Art Basel Miami Beach
Tel. +1/305-674 1292

This year’s Art Loves Architecture features British architect David Adjaye, who started his internationally respected practice Adjaye Architects in London in 1994. He has collaborated with artists such as Chris Ofili at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and Olafur Eliasson at the Venice Biennale in 2005, and has, among many other projects, completed the Nobel Peace Center, Oslo, in 2005 and the Museum for Contemporary Art, Denver, in 2007. Art Loves Architecture will be a conversation moderated by Aaron Betsky, curator of the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, featuring Adjaye with artists Matthew Richie and Teresita Fernandez, who in their work both cross the borders of art and architecture. Richie’s vast installations blur art and architecture, like “The Morning Line” at the 3rd Seville Biennale in 2008, which was developed together with architects Aranda\Lasch and Arup AGU. Artist Teresita Fernandez treats art and architecture as collaborative fields and has engaged in cooperations with architects on various projects. The panel will discuss the roles, responsibilities and authorship in the collaborations that all three of them are undertaking and explore how the ideas of art and architecture converge, what architects and artists can learn from each other, and what kind of practice could potentially emerge from this blurring of previously demarcated practices.

This year’s Art Loves Film presents the extraordinary 2008 documentary “Herb and Dorothy” (directed by Megumi Sasaki) telling the story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and his wife Dorothy, a librarian – an ordinary couple of modest means who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history, which they then donated to the National Gallery in Washington D.C. In forty years, the Vogels had managed to accumulate over 4,000 pieces, filling every corner of their living space from the bathroom to the kitchen. They proved themselves visionaries: Many artists they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned. Their circle includes: Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert and Sylvia Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, and Lawrence Weiner.

Art Loves Music: Yelle 10/3/08

Art Loves Music: Yelle
Wednesday December 3, 2008
10 p.m.
On the beach, between 21st and 22nd Street
Free public access
Information: Florida Office Art Basel Miami Beach,
Tel. +1/305-674 1292

Born and raised in Brittany, France, 25-years-old musician Yelle is known for her spirited, explicit lyrics, laid over a pulsating pop electro beat. This musical prowess was first showcased on her MySpace page in 2005 with the track “Je Veux te Voir”, responding to a macho song by French rapper Cuizinier. After her first solo performance at trendy Paris venue “Paris Paris” last year, Yelle is the emerging artist in France’s new girl-power scene. Yelle is the stage name of Julie Budet, a feminised version of the acronym YEL, “You enjoy life”. In combination with the explicit lyrics, her flashy appearance and electrifying performances were a great success, not only in the technotronic scene but also in the European charts. Her songs echo a certain nostalgia for the golden years of French electro-pop but are boosted by the groove and vibe of this shameless nouveau rave femme.

Kick Off Art Basel with Italy’s Finest Female/Male Fashion Retailer, MARNI with a Grand Opening 12/2/08

Kick Off Art Basel with Italy’s Finest Female/Male Fashion Retailer, MARNI with a Grand Opening on Dec. 2nd from 5PM – 8PM

We wish to invite you to the MARNI boutique opening on Tuesday, December 2nd.
It is conveniently located across from the InFashion Art Expo. We hope to see you there!

Marni is pleased to announce the opening of its first flagship store in Miami. The boutique, situated in 3930 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 100, captures the mood of Miami’s Design District taking inspiration from the streamlined, rhythmic patterns of the Art Deco style for which the city is famous.

Simple glazing of about 25 meters forms two of the boutique’s exterior walls making the façade appear wide open, capitalizing on the bright, sunny climate and giving the space an airy lightness.

For the design concept of the 230 square meter store, Consuelo Castiglioni and the architects from Sybarite played with circular forms, repeating them throughout the boutique. Graduated patterns of semi-spheres in white timberland and “haute relief as decoration on the wall echoes the texture of local Art Deco buildings and becomes the signature element of the Miami boutique. Clusters of varying sized backlit fiberglass boxes, painted in a random spray from translucent white to natural tones, are set in the walls accommodating bags, jewelry and sunglasses.

Round tiered shoe displays in stainless steel are scattered around the space along with round leather stools, modular seating and beige colored circular rugs, breaking up the expanse of polished concrete floor.

Appearing to float on minimal supports a stainless steel rail undulates around the perimeter, inside of which stainless steel trees fan out. Mannequins sprayed from white to natural tones, hang from the ceiling, accentuating the sense of weightless suspension in space. A special area in the anti-fitting room is dedicated to the lingerie collection, which is presented in upholstered leather boxes.

This intriguing setting contributes to the heritage of Miami’s Design District and provides an unexpected and captivating way of presenting Marni ready to wear and accessories collections.

Sunset Art Culture at D&G Art Gallery 12/5/08

http://www.dgfineart.com/

D & G Art Design Gallery is the result of combining years of experience, creating an exciting fusion of art and design in Miami. Its art department, known as D & G Fine Art, manages some of the most prominent and up-and-coming contemporary artists of this exciting field.

Gallery president, Erik Don, along with art director, Oswaldo Agudelo, has created a unique environment where both artists and collectors can come together. Here, it is not only about the economic benefits, but also about the sharing of ideas, making D & G Fine Art in Wynwood a cultural breeding ground where art can be freely expressed.

It is during this edition of Art Basel Miami Beach where well known artists in Latin America and Europe are solidifying their already recognized talent and D & G Fine Art is excited to bring some of the greatest emerging talents to Wynwood at 540 N.W. 28th Street.

Artist A/k/rona of Colombia will be showcased. With his surreal and abstract paintings, he has become a star among collectors in Dubai, where he was chosen as one of the best during the Emirates art fair.

Jorge Jimenez Deredia of Costa Rica will be showing his monumental sculptures. Jimenez Deredia has seen his works in Saint Peter’s Basilica, commissioned by the Vatican. During this year’s Basel, he will present his latest and most representative pieces.

Peruvian Paolo Cordano comes with his particular dose of abstract art, inspired by the pre-Columbian period. It is the force and impacts of his chosen color palette that identifies him as a great artist.

Marjolein van der Sluis of Holland is known for her subtle oneiric art and her particular use of pastels. For his part, Spaniard Ruperto Cabrera, uses the images of well known works of art and mutates them into a classic and modern mix, which has already taken him into some of the biggest auction houses.

Also from Spain is Pilar Cocero. She brings her singular vision of the world and its majestic landscapes, interpreted in her use of color and light.

Gustavo Duque, fresh off his recent successes in South and Central America, appears renewed and confident with his pieces, in which the horse serves as the central theme.

Eloisa Castellanos, of Cuba, appears with her altered states of consciousness and her Eastern influences. Always playful in her use of color, her work shows an almost monochrome scheme. This is in stark contrast to the works of Colombian Helbert Ortiz, for whom the warm and intense colors of his native land are the bases of his inspiration. Almost always using the female shape as an example of perfection, Ortiz incorporates it as his primal concept of beauty.

For the most demanding of collectors, Miami’s D & G Fine Art in Wynwood also features several pieces, such as “Revolution”, by Marc Chagall, “The Girl”, by Pierre Auguste Renoir, and “The Painter and his Muse”, by Pablo Picasso. It also features pieces by Maurice Utrillo, Norman Rockwell, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.

D & G Fine Art provides a variety of services. These include the rating, certification, investigation, printing and editing of books and lithographs. Additionally, it includes a successful guidance program for the buying and selling of artwork for collectors. D & G Fine Art is proud to provide investment expertise in this very sophisticated art investment medium.

All of the artists featured within D & G Fine Art are widely known and recognized for their trajectory, putting them side by side along many of the greats that can be found in some of the worlds most prestigious auction houses.

With the guidance of Oswaldo Agudelo, your visit to the gallery will not only be stepping into the world of art history. It will also be an opportunity to receive a complete assessment of how the art world works and what are the best investment options within this sophisticated and passionate trade.

Every year, Art Basel gauges what will be the next “Big Thing” in the art world in the coming months. D & G Fine Art finds itself in the privileged position of being a part of that process, making its mark at the highest of levels, both for artists and collectors.

Sushisamba Presents Ginzatropicalia: Graffiti Gone Global 2008

SUSHISAMBA PRESENTS
GINZATROPICALIA: graffiti gone global
FEATURING RENOWNED GRAFFITI ARTISTS AND SKATE SHOW

Trailblazing the way for fusion Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian concepts, SUSHISAMBA first expanded its culinary palate to include visual arts in December 2007 with the inaugural “GINZATROPICALIA: graffiti gone global” art show. Slated for December 5 to 7, 2008 during Art Basel Miami, the second annual edition has a new curator, a new location, a new vibe and above all, new talent.

Francesco LoCastro, South Florida’s ambassador of the national New Contemporary art scene including Lowbrow, Pop Surrealist and Street Art, will be at the curatorial helm of GINZATROPICALIA. The 3-day exhibition will take place at 3250 NE 1st Avenue, Suite 100 in Midtown Miami, the city’s emerging hub of art and design. With a fresh urban landscape as its backdrop, the progressive South American and Brazilian graffiti movement coupled with iconic Japanese illustration have infused GINZATROPICALIA with a breadth that situates Street Art among its contemporaries. Participating artists include: CENA7 (Michel Ramalho de Toledo), Thais Beltrame, Emol (Emerson de Oliveria Brito), Flip (Felipe Yung), Dres13 (André Greppi), LEBO (David LeBatard), Flavio Samelo, Brian Sensebe, Suiko and Rodrigo Villas.

GINZATROPICALIA is the brainchild of Shimon Bokovza, Concept Developer of SUSHISAMBA restaurants and Sugarcane Lounge, along with partners Danielle Billera and Matt Johnson. “Bringing art to SUSHISAMBA is something that is a natural evolution of our whole concept and experience,” says Bokovza. “For our sophomore year, we have developed a bigger and better program that incorporates many renowned and emerging faces in the art world. We would only call upon the best talent to execute a dream that was sparked with the inception of Art Basel.”

Derived from the Japanese pop culture district of Ginza and from Tropicalia, the radical 1960s art movement of Brazil, GINZATROPICALIA captures the changing landscape of Contemporary Art. The Surrealist Graffiti and Mural Art movement of São Paulo is a snapshot of the thriving genre that stems from a rich political, poetic history. Conversely, the clean and simplified lines characteristic of Japanese graphics bring a satiric dimension to the art form. Whereas graffiti first exploded in the United States in the early 1980s, it continues to surpass all musical, cultural and geographic borders: from urban tagging to curated exhibitions, Street Art comes in all shapes and sizes and by its very nature resists conformity.

With concept, comfort and cuisine unparalleled among the contemporaneous satellite shows, SUSHISAMBA is launching a pop-up restaurant open to the public throughout GINZATROPICALIA. Dubbed SUGARCANE Lounge in congruence with SUSHISAMBA New York and Las Vegas outposts, the ephemeral eatery will offer signature favorites including sushi rolls and small plates. The on-site robata grill, a feature shared only with the new Vegas Strip location, and pop-up concept is but a taste of the full-scale SUGARCANE Lounge that is anticipated to open in Midtown Miami in summer 2009.

“The Street Art movement is the new voice and global consciousness of the ascending youth culture,” said LoCastro. “Showcasing some of the finest talent from the capitals of Japan, Brazil, Peru and the United States under one roof marks the arrival of a long awaited, and very personal, endeavor for me and I am excited to be partnering with SUSHISAMBA to bring GINZATROPICALIA to life.”

For the past decade, LoCastro has been South Florida’s thoroughfare to the New Contemporary art scene in the United States as both a respected artist and as the curator of intrepid exhibitions. Founder of Pop Art Studios, a creative services company and design studio, his group exhibition We’ll Make a Lover of You at ArtCenter/South Florida during Art Basel Miami 2006 received numerous industry accolades. LoCastro, who continues to push the boundaries of emerging art at home and abroad, is also featured among the 100 distinguished artists in the definitive book “Miami Contemporary Artists” (Schiffer Publishing in 2007). Recently named Executive Director of Gen Art’s 1st Annual Vanguard Art Fair, he joins SUSHISAMBA for GINZATROPICALIA 2008. More information about participating artists and exhibition program to follow.

New York (November 22, 2008) – Fountain Miami, the alternative art exhibition known for presenting cutting-edge and independent art galleries, sets up shop in an industrial warehouse located at 25th Street and North Miami Avenue for its latest installment this December. Fountain is a guerrilla-style art event, dubbed by many as the “Anti Art Fair” for its brash, off-the-wall offerings of non-traditional art exhibitions in the art fair environment.

Recruiting avant-garde galleries who showcase progressive primary-market works, Fountain breathes fresh life into the Miami Beach “Basel Frazzle,” giving gallery-goers and art enthusiasts the opportunity to see new works without traditional booths or selection juries. While most fairs have fallen into the hands of corporate management, Fountain remains independent, and as such presents work in a forward-thinking manner. Unencumbered by the strict presentation guidelines and parameters found at other fairs, Fountain preserves the visions of galleries and dealers to provide an environment reflective of the artists and their works.

Fountain’s venue, a large and dramatic 16000 square-foot complex with both interior and exterior exhibition areas, is adjacent to all the major Wynwood fairs. Participating galleries receive approximately 1200 square feet of exhibition space, so visitors can expect massive installations of contemporary painting, sculpture, performance and new media art.

Artnet – the most widely read art site on the web – describes Fountain: “Likeability and chutzpah used to be what art was about. That, and a little guerrilla mentality, which you had at Fountain in spades. This is the place where you reminisce about the good old days, when you did it yourself, when inspiration and magic struck like a bolt from the blue. Here at Fountain, the artists and dealers are hungry and they welcome all visitors warmly. They are having fun and that’s the vibe. I felt like sitting down, having a beer, and hanging.”

Fountain Miami 2008 participating galleries include:

Glowlab – New York
Leo Kesting – New York
Open Ground – Brooklyn
Radau – Miami
Jonathan Shorr Gallery – New York
Yum Yum Factory – Brooklyn
Dada Art Gallery – Philadelphia
Briceno Gallery – Miami

Fountain was launched in March 2006 in New York in an effort to leverage support for independent galleries overlooked by the larger, corporate-sponsored art fairs. The name “Fountain” is a nod to Marcel Duchamp’s controversial sculpture which shook up the art world when it was rejected by the Society of Artists’ exhibition in 1917. Similarly, in defiant contrast with The Armory Show, Art Basel Miami Beach, Pulse, Scope and the numerous other international art fairs, Fountain has received wide public support and critical acclaim for its experimental slant. In form and spirit, the artwork exhibited at Fountain reflects the avant-garde attitude of the Dada art movement, while attracting the attention of the international clientele and top collectors who attend the more traditional fairs.

PanamericanArtProjects during Art Basel 2008

Panamerican Art Projects presents three solo exhibitions featuring works by Francis Acea, Tracey Snelling and Ana Maria Pacheco in the project room.

Francis Acea (b. 1967, Havana, Cuba-lives in Miami, Florida) generally is commenting about the value of producing, and of making money, versus the real value. In a sense, Francis is testing the notion of invented value versus accumulated value. His work is filled with irony, as he is practically challenging the spectators, but at the same time appealing at their sense of humor. This is a highly seductive type of art that will appeal to a selective type of viewer.

Tracey Snelling (b.1970, Oakland, California- lives in Oakland, California) works with elements mainly from the advertising industry and the cinema. Many of her pieces are inspired by movies, especially from the fifties. She also takes elements from the architecture; bringing it to her pieces as photos or as scale models.

Ana Maria Pacheco (b. 1943, Goiánia, Brazil- lives in London, England). Best known for her life-like sculptures based on religious figures, Ana Maria is also an accomplished printmaker. The gallery is presenting her work ‘Dark Night of the Soul’, a sculptural installation, based on the life of St. Sebastian; the work expresses her reaction to the military dictatorship in Brazil during the 1960’s and 70’s. The installation is accompanied by drawings and prints.

LAURE DE MAZIERES

A winning mixture of Italian contemporary art, a group exhibition organized and arranged by the art gallery, Fabbrica Eos, Milan, and Italian design interpreted by Visionnaire by Ipe Cavalli, Bologna, in the international context of the Art Basel week and De Mazieres space. Thirty works of painting, sculpture and photography will be exhibited in the show room: Fabio Giampietro’s canvases, who uses spiky objects to remove oil colours and create dizzy views of grey metropolitan cities which make your skin tingle; Manuel Felisi, who also depicts the city by his photographed glimpses of cities, avenues and monuments with painting and decoration; and José D’Apice, his works lead us beyond the reality, through visions arising out of the slow and intense activity of pencil on paper and parchment.

Paolo Troilo’s autobiographic paintings show elegant and silent outbursts of anger through finger painting on canvas. Besides the Artworks recently exhibited at artist David Reimondo’s personal exhibition in London, created by toasting slices of bread, Giuseppe Mastromatteo proposes new photos of his series dedicated to the senses that, thanks to photographic retouching, hint at a new and abstract meaning of the word ‘sense’. Besides the Fabbrica Eos’ artists, Marco Veronese’s works are an integral part of the exhibition, demonstrating the Cracking Art Group’s research, with his photographic works combined with plastic inserts; as well as Alessandro Algardi who, with his large monochrome works of art which show off and at the same time conceal endless indecipherable words, is a sort of spokesman for an artistic expression that is tied to the concept of language and to the negation of meaning.

Spinello Gallery – Christina Pettersson / Pulse Miami Preview

CHRISTINA PETTERSSON – “WE ARE NO LONGER IN THE LAND OF THE LORDS” (DETAIL)
GRAPHITE ON PAPER, 86″ x 68″, 2008
“…The tale begins with Judith, a biblical heroine who saved her people by seducing and beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes. Like Salome and Lucretia, Judith was a popular subject during the Renaissance and Baroque era, which delighted in erotic and violent scenes. Dozens of artists from Botticelli to Caravaggio to Klimt depicted this woman who summed up that indefatigable brew of virtue and sexuality, a holy strumpet.

It has always been one of my favorite themes. Yet to speak the truth, I do not care in the least about the actual characters of Judith and Holofernes. I do not draw in order to make versions of exhausted themes. It is my own story, and the head I cut is history itself. The perfect murder. Sex and violence, naturally. The mood of exotic mystery still hangs in the air, a heavy breath lingering against the sword. Warm dark blood dripping down her belly. Marvel at the strange beauty of a severed head, contained within a drawing, and held up to the light like a glass of water. The narrative is long over. This is what I can do in a drawing, unencumbered by the perceived reality of time and place. This is drawing as potential memory, a way of summoning up an event before it has occurred, that more primal memory, spirit, breath force, nerve impulses, incantation; memory that breaks down barriers and imperiously remakes our settled way of seeing. The memory of no time. This violence would be gracious, clear and cool. Magnificent…”

Jaco Pastorius Park – Grand Opening & Concert Announcement 12/1/08

ENJOY A FREE “JAZZ ON THE GREEN” CONCERT AT THE GRAND OPENING OF JACO PASTORIUS PARK
DECEMBER 1st

Artists performing include; Toni Bishop, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Thomas, Othello Molineaux, and Randy Bernsen

The City of Oakland Park Florida will take another important step in its downtown redevelopment at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 1st when City officials and other dignitaries cut the ribbon for the grand opening of Jaco Pastorius Park at 4000 North Dixie Highway.

The ceremony will be followed by a free “Jazz on the Green” concert featuring several artists who were closely associated with the new park’s legendary namesake Jaco Pastorius.

“We selected December 1st as this was Jaco’s birthday,” says Mayor Layne Dallett Walls. “And we are excited to feature performances from musicians who had personal connections to Jaco, as well as the jazz band from Northeast High School which Jaco attended.”

Pastorius, who grew up near Oakland Park City Hall, showcased what would soon become extraordinary musical talents at Northeast High School. More than 20 years after his untimely death, he is still considered by many in the music industry as the world’s greatest bass guitarist. During his short yet brilliant career Jaco also recorded albums with other jazz legends including, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell and the super-group Weather Report.

According to Parks and Leisure Services Director Jenna LaFleur, the 6 p.m. jazz concert will feature a “who’s who” of South Florida jazz. Songstress Toni Bishop, Othello Molineaux, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Thomas, and Randy Bernsen are among the artists scheduled to perform.

“We are pleased to present this free concert for our residents and anyone else who would like to come and see why we refer to Oakland Park as a ‘hometown choice,’” said LaFleur, who encourages everyone to bring blankets or lawn chairs as the concert will take place on the park’s large grassy field.

For information on the grand opening of Jaco Pastorius Park or the free jazz concert, please call the city’s Parks and Leisure Services at 954-630-4500.

Location: 125 Street between 7th and 8th avenues
Time: 6 pm-9 pm.
Special opening night at MOCA, NoMi galleries and alternative spaces during Art|Basel Miami Beach

On the occasion of Art|Basel Miami Beach, MOCA, NoMi galleries, and alternative spaces will celebrate their opening night on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, from 6 pm to 9 pm.

NoMi galleries and alternative spaces are located across MOCA.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is presenting the first major museum exhibition of Anri Sala’s videos and photographs in the United States, featuring works from the late 1990s to the present along with photographs and sculptures that explore a dialogue about the interplay of the works with space and time. During the 7 – 9 pm opening, which will take place on December 2nd, members of The Cleveland Orchestra will perform Anri Sala’s original score, A Spurious Emission at 8 pm. For more information visit: www.mocanomi.org.

Two new alternative spaces with special projects by contemporary artists Diango Hernandez and Ronald Moran will be featured during Art|Basel Miami Beach, in North Miami.

Diango Hernandez, Diamonds and Stones: My Education. Diango Hernandez is a Cuban artist living and working in Dusseldorf, Germany. This project is presented by Federico Luger Gallery, Milano, Italy, in collaboration with Alexander & Bonin (New York), Pepe Cobo (Madrid), and Michael Wieshofer (Cologne). The exhibition includes a series of photographic works and an installation. Images used by Cuba’s Ministry of Education distributed to schools under Castro’s regime to promote Cummunist Revolutionary ideals are inserted by Hernandez into diamond cuts and precious stones, thus giving multivalent meanings. Diamonds are hard and almost indestructible stones, just like the ideal of the Communist Revolution. As symbols of luxury diamonds and precious stones provide antithetic images with regards to Communism. The exhibition also includes “Years,” an installation built up of numbers that go from 1959 to 2008, the years Fidel Castro was in power. The numbers are made of rusty bars as a symbol of forgotten promises.

Ronald Moran, Learning the Lesson. Artist Ronald Moran, from el Salvador in collaboration with Pan American Art Projects (Miami) and Klaus Steinmetz Contemporary (San Jose, Costa Rica), presents a site specific installation featuring objects of everyday life which become instruments of domestic violence in the piece’s setting. His works are domestic or familiar spaces covered with white industrial cotton. His goal is to neutralize his subject matter, and to represent the impact of contemporary society’s lack of sensibility towards violence and domestic roles.

OUT AT THE WEDDING
Directed by Lee Friedlander
SOUTH FLORIDA PREMIERE

Out At The Wedding is about relationships. It’s about the thin line between trust and truth and the incredible comic lengths we go to avoid both.

Transplanted Southerner, Alex Houston, has found life as a successful wine importer in Manhattan to be a pretty fabulous life. Laughs come in spades from her best gay pal since childhood, Jonathan and love is found in the package of Dana, a dreamy bi-racial airline pilot. When he unexpectedly proposes to her the day she’s to leave town for her sister’s wedding, life gets complicated. Having assumed her southern family would never accept her ethnic boyfriend, she’s never told them he exists. In turn, she’s led Dana to believe her entire family is dead.

Once back in South Carolina, it’s a minefield of emotion as she deals with her distant father, her overly exuberant sister Jeannie and all the relatives and friends of her past who can’t believe she’s still single. Especially curious is Alex’s dim high school sweetheart who misunderstands a conversation with Jonathan and starts spreading a rumor at the reception that she’s gay. When an inebriated Alex gives a thinly veiled speech about her interracial relationship at the wedding, everyone mistakenly thinks it’s a big coming out speech. After unsuccessfully trying to set everyone straight so to speak, her right wing family has a decidedly left wing response and the lie actually brings them all closer.

As the two sisters build a relationship they’ve never been able to cultivate before, Alex can’t bring herself to fess up she’s straight. When Jeannie comes back from her honeymoon and wants to come to New York and meet Alex’s lesbian love “Dana,” Jonathan comes up with an idea to “hire” a girlfriend. That’s when things really start to get complicated!

Moss At Design Miami, Part One: Bavaria

MOSS at DESIGN MIAMI, part one: BAVARIA
At Design Miami 2008, Moss will unveil Bavaria, a spectacular new suite from Dutch design team Studio Job. This collection of five marquetry furnishings in Indian Rosewood features intricate and fine multi-colored laser-cut inlays in a bucolic farm motif. With its brightly-coloured symmetrical, ‘book-matched’ inlays, the pieces depict bountiful scenes of farm life, including red barns and silos, horse corrals and dog houses, sunflowers, vegetables, pigs, chickens, and other such iconography. While inspired by 17th and 18th century Bavarian hand-painted furniture and embracing the age old technique of marquetry, Studio Job employed modern technology to laser cut the inlays to achieve a flawlessly executed design and an almost seamless surface. The collection is offered in a limited edition of six pieces per model exclusive internationally to Moss.

Nynke Tynagel and Job Smeets of Studio Job offer Bavaria fresh off the heels of critical and commercial debuts of 2007 which included “Homework” a series of seven bronze sculptures, and “Robber Baron,” five monumental bronze furnishings introduced by Moss at Design Miami 2007. Studio Job was the subject of “Bold” the design team’s first retrospective at the inaugeral exhibition of the design museum Designhuis in the Netherlands and at the “Z33” exhibition in Belgium. They were the solo focus of Moss’s selection for Design Miami/Basel where pieces from “Robber Baron,” “Perished” and the complete suite of “Homework” were exhibited. The marketplace has responded to Studio Job’s signature of blurring lines between art and design as well, with their inclusion, along with works by Ron Arad and Shiro Kuramata, in Christie’s London Fall auction of blue chip contemporary fine art, “Post War & Contemporary Art” sale, the first time Design was included in such a sale.

And stay tuned for Moss at Design Miami part two: the Campana brothers.

December 3 – 6

Fernando and Humberto Campana have been awarded Designer of the Year by Design Miami, placing them in the company of previous winners Zaha Hadid, Marc Newson and Tokujin Yoshioka.
The designation is a reflection of the tremendous success the Campanas have had in recent years in both the academic world and in the market for limited edition studio design.
As the exclusive representative of work by the Estudio Campana in North America, Moss has selected works for presentation at Design Miami 2008 which reflect not only some of the most important works they have produced but also typify our long standing collaborative relationship. This shared vision has resulted in works such as a special 34 piece installation of Campane di Campana, a historic project orchestrated by Murray Moss between the Campanas and the Murano glassmaker Venini. Also on exhibition are exclusive variations on two of their most indelible creations, “Favela” and “Corallo,” created for Moss in 2004. Additional works include the “Panda Chair” from the celebrated “Banquette” series, and selections from the acclaimed “Sushi” series.

This Thanksgiving Weekend you are invited to Gotsoul Saturdays at Nikki Beach Miami 11/29/08

** EVERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON BETWEEN 12PM AND 7PM **
**NO COVER HAPPY HOUR BETWEEN 4PM-7PM**

***
Thanks to all who made it out last weekend! We are back to do it all over again this and every Saturday.
This week we welcome Julius ‘The Mad Thinker’ from Chicago.
It gets dark earlier so we can expect a Sunset Session during our Happy Hour

http://www.myspace.com/themadthinker

If you close your eyes, open your ears, open your mind, and let your
body flow, you will find yourself in a new plane previously
unexplored. Seamlessly blended tracks vibrate your spine while
soothing your soul. Many people refer to the genre as house, but
Julius the Mad Thinker makes it home. Approaching each endeavor with
heart, soul and passion, Julius builds you up gradually through loops
of energy bursts and just when you reach your climax, he drops you
back to a lounge state awaiting the next climb to the peak.

With Julius the Mad Thinker, you must “Witness the Dynamic” . . .

This illustrious dynamic was first identified by the founder of Large
Music, Jeff Craven, when he invited Julius to open and close the first
annual Get Large party at the Winter Music Conference. From there,
John Davis, a top NYC promoter and co-founder of Body&SOUL, witnessed
the dynamic when he came upon Julius and installed him as a resident
of Sunday Sessions in NYC. Chicago house pioneer Chip E, witnessed the
dynamic when he invited Julius to be interviewed for house music
documentary, the Unusual Suspects, to which Julius was the youngest
interviewee to appear. And NYC’s Undaground Archives Choice Award gave
tribute to the dynamic when Julius was awarded the “Best Emerging
Talent” recognition.

First exposed to dance music in the sixth grade, Julius went on to
become a DJ and producer in 1994. Since that time, Julius has
developed a charisma behind the turntables that can only be described
as a dynamic that fills the room. Coupled with “the Mad Thinker”
title, which was given to him by MC Miles Bentley of Rec Center,
Julius makes no move as an artist haphazardly. Be it the tracks he
plays, the order in which he plays them or the EQing which brings out
a melody or rhythm in a whole new way – all these elements which
comprise his dynamic are meticulously plotted throughout his
improvisational creative process.

As the co-founder and partner of the internationally renowned
promotional and DJ collective, 3Degrees Global, and a resident of the
3Degrees “Some Call It House . . . We Call It Home” tour, the dynamic
has been witnessed throughout the most notorious clubs of house
music’s homeland in Chicago, including Smartbar, Soundbar, Sonotheque,
Ohm, The Note and Zentra. Across the nation the dynamic has been
witnessed on the main stage at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival,
Marques Wyatt’s DEEP event in LA, Soul Revival in Boston, Devotion at
The End Up & Pink in San Francisco, Club Five in Washington DC, Pearl
at Nikki Beach in Miami, Kevin Hedge and Louie Vega’s Roots at Cielo
in New York as well as stops in Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and France. In
addition the dynamic has cross pollinated with house legends via
Julius DJing alongside Frankie Knuckles, Joe Claussell, Farley
“Jackmaster” Funk, Lil’ Louis, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Derrick May
and Ron Trent amongst others.

As he continues to manifest this vision in music, Julius says, “My
purpose in this journey of music and life is to help others get to
places that they never imagined possible, and as a DJ, I’m here to
live that message as an example.”

Soldier Diaz: Length of Service Unknown
Soldier Billboard in Miami Wynwood District
Portraits of Soldiers by Suzanne Opton
A poignant and controversial art project is on view in Miami. It is part of the Soldier Billboard Project which has had a presence in five other cities since the fall. The soldier billboards have sparked a heated debate on the street and on the web with responses from the military and the public.
Artist Suzanne Opton has photographed soldiers between tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her portraits afford the viewer a very intimate and serious look at the young men and women who have put their lives at risk serving in the military. The results are haunting and when they appear on forty-eight foot billboards floating above the freeway in the light of day or eerily illuminated at night, they are riveting and mysterious.
Thousands of American Soldiers are returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We may wonder what they saw, what they did and how their war experience has affected them as they return to civilian life. One of the soldiers, Cain Claxton, BNCOC Small Group Leader, was initially deployed for 120 days in Afghanistan and had only recently returned when his photo was taken: “I think it’s about being vulnerable. As a Soldier, I don’t want to ever look like that, but I’m more than a Soldier, I’m a husband and father. My kids don’t separate the two. ‘Daddy is almost always in his soldier clothes.’”
Five arts organizations have sponsored the Soldier Billboards launching with the start of the Democratic National Convention by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver. Forecast Public Art in St. Paul Minnesota put up one board during the Republican National Convention. DiverseWorks sponsored two boards in Houston and the Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art sponsored a board through the elections in November. Skylab/the Shelf in Columbus, Ohio had three soldier billboards up before the elections.
The Soldier Billboard Project is supported by the Fledgling Fund, CrossCurrents Foundation, the Cummings Foundation and private donors. The New York Foundation for the Arts is the fiscal sponsor.

Suzanne Opton’s artwork can be found in collections in the US and Europe including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Austin Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Musée de l’Eysée, Lausanne. Switzerland.

For more information and images of the billboards please go to our website http://www.soldiersface.com/ and the artist website http://www.suzanneopton.com/.

Set Tonight: A Very Special Evening with Miss Nine 11/28/08

Season is finally here and I’m very excited to let you know about tonight’s amazing performance by Miss Nine at Set.
Miss Nine began her career, not as a deejay, but as a model. At 16, she made it to the finals of one of the largest modeling pageants in Germany, and soon after secured a worldwide contract with Elite Model Management. Longing for more, her passion for music led Kristin Schrot to move to Amsterdam where she dubbed herself Miss Nine and began pursuing a career in the electronic industry. With her eclectic taste in music, ranging from energetic grooves with plenty of vocals to a deeper, progressive sound, Miss Nine is sure to turn heads and move feet anywhere she performs. Let her get you dancing the night away this 28th of November as she comes to take over the decks at SET Nightclub.
Join Eric Milon, Antonio Misuraca and myself for a very special evening also featuring our favorite local DJs Pedro and Chicco Secci.

Galerie Ernst Hilger/hilger contemporary is proud to take part in Pulse
Miami 2008. We will be featuring new works from the following gallery artists:

Asgar / Gabriel – pieces centred on imaginary anti-worlds that are morphed into large-scale paintings. The pieces are often reminiscent of portraiture modes from historical illustrations.

Oliver Dorfer – the premier of two paintings of the series Pulpproject, carrying the flatness and glossiness of the works even further by painting from the back on acrylic-glass.

Anastasia Khoroshilova – photographs of martial arts staged in a Russian military camp inspired by the greek vase paintings of Olympic fighters.

Àngel Marcos – installations of light boxes from the series ‘Un coup de dés’ findings in Las Vegas.

Julie Monaco – works of abstract reality creating a digital environment based on numbers and numerical codes.

Sara Rahbar – works focussing on the divisional nature of flags by the way in which they distinguish people and separate countries. Her statement using flags against flags serves to speak out against this segregation.

Spencer Tunick – photographs from recent installations taken at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna.

BEST DIRECTOR 2008 Sundance Film Festival!
Ballast
(Lance Hammer/USA/2008)

With Michael J. Smith Sr, JimMyron Ross, Tarra Riggs, Johnny McPhail
BALLAST is one of those rare films that maximize the medium through an aesthetic of understatement. Every frame is deliberately and beautifully composed, every cut artfully and economically executed—not only to transmit a quietly gripping story but to reveal characters’ layered emotional experiences and the specific textures and sensations of their locales. In the
cold, winter light of a rural Mississippi Delta township, a man’s suicide radically transforms three characters’ lives and throws off-balance what has long been a static arrangement among them. With circumstances thrusting them into proximity, a subtle interdependence and common purpose emerge for Marlee and Lawrence as they navigate grief, test new waters, and tentatively move forward.
WINNER: Best Director & Excellence in Cinematography Sundance Film Festival

The word paraphernalia has evolved over time. What is now loosely defined as “equipment, apparatus or furnishing used in or necessary for a particular activity”, historically referred to a bride’s property beyond her dowry. Paraphernalia as a word, has taken a new connotation and has become more intertwined with the realm of taboo. Paraphernalia is a means to an end, and is applicable in almost every aspect of life.

The humorous, historical, political and personal aspects of the word or idea of “paraphernalia” is explored in the paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, video and photography in this nationally juried exhibition.

Outside Lot: The Garden and Grotto of Manifest Destiny
From the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock desert of Nevada, to the Bakehouse Art Complex here in Miami, artist Randy Polumbo has taken his 30 foot installation across the country. The grotto will be on display in the main parking lot of the Bakehouse from Thursday, December 4th through January 25th, 2009.

Come experience this interactive installation! A flower field comprised of bizarre satellite-shaped blossoms gathered around and inside a modified shipping container lures the viewer into a grotto. These techno-organic LED illuminated flowers with solar panel petals and stamens are made of softly glowing sex toys. Set in the BAC parking lot, this modified ARMY container, punctured with baby bottle nipples cast out of recycled glass amid a pollination frenzy of solar flowers, creates a soft glowing subconscious garden. Visitors become pollinators, tempted by the glass nipples to penetrate the grotto.

OPENING RECEPTION: DECEMBER 4th, 2008 6-10pm
on view until January 25th, 2009

Swenson Gallery: 64
BAC artists work within the confines of a 64 square inch artwork restriction. This multi media exhibition will showcase paintings, drawings, sculpture, mixed media works and photography.
