Cernuda Arte – Opening – Three New Exhibitions 3/7/25

Cernuda Arte – Opening – Three New Exhibitions

Cernuda Arte
3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd.,
Coral Gables, Florida, 33134
Website
Cost: Free

Coral Gables, FL – Cernuda Arte is thrilled to present its three new springtime exhibitions. The official opening of these shows will be held at 3155 and 3143 Ponce de León Blvd, Coral Gables, FL, on Friday, March 7th, 6-9 pm.

25 Artworks from the 19th Century – Havana in the nineteenth century was already a wealthy, highly developed city and one of the most promising metropolises of the New World. In the mid-nineteenth century, the city was considered by many to be the Paris of the Caribbean. The intimate relationship with the mother country, Spain, and the intense commerce with the quickly developing economic powerhouse, the United States, facilitated the cultural development of the island of Cuba, and primarily of its capital.

This exhibition explores the development of art in Cuba via the three dominant genres of the colonial times, i.e. portraits, landscapes, and religious imagery. The two founders of art in Cuba, Nicolás de la Escalera and Vicente Escobar, are represented in this show. Works by the three Chartrand brothers, Esteban, Philippe, and Augusto Chartrand, descendants of a wealthy French family, are exhibited together in Miami for the first time, along with paintings of the Melero family—Miguel, the father and director of the San Alejandro Academy for decades, and his sons Miguel Angel and Aurelio. Other artists represented are the Belgian Henri Cleenewerck, the Spaniards Víctor Patricio de Landaluze, José Carol and Miguel Arias, along with the “criollos” Armando Menocal, Leopoldo Romañach, Federico Sulroca, and Antonio Rodríguez Morey.

Flora Fong (b. 1949): A Lifetime of Excellence showcases five important paintings by Flora Fong. Over her four-decade career, the artist has gained international acclaim and awards, with her work featured at prestigious institutions such as the Art Museums of the Americas in Washington D.C., the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, and the Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea. This special presentation honors Fong’s achievements through representative paintings on canvas featuring the artist’s favorite symbols – roosters, mountains, hurricane winds, tropical fruits, sunflowers, and the Caribbean Sea, among others – all executed in vivid color.

Danuel Méndez (b. 1989): Recent Works from the Flowers Series presents a new collection of paintings by the rising star. In this series, Méndez continues his exploration of tropical plants, blending contemporary expressionism with classical elements. His reimagined abstract flora appears in iconic vases, such as Ming and Qing dynasty porcelains and ancient Greek urns, offering new perspectives on the connections between culture, art, humanity, and nature. Méndez’s works have been exhibited in important international art fairs throughout the United States, including EXPO Chicago, Art Miami, Art Wynwood, Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, the Dallas Art Fair, and Philadelphia Fine Art, and can be found in distinguished private collections across the country.

The gallery also continues its acclaimed exhibitions, A Surrealist Century and a corresponding Wifredo Lam retrospective. These interconnected and curated exhibitions explore the surrealist movement’s century-long history, tracing its transformative journey from Europe to Latin America, the emergence and development of Magic Realism, and artists like Wifredo Lam’s roles as a bridge between the avant-garde scenes of Paris
and Havana.

About the Exhibitions:
Opening Reception: Friday, March 7th, 6:00-9:00 pm

Coral Gables, Florida, 33146

Join us for a presentation by Dr. John Paul Paniagua during which he will offer an alternative narrative of the early conquest and colonization that de-emphasizes Native dissolution and extinction. Instead, it explores the formation of an early Caribbean labor regime built on both the Spanish encomienda and Indigenous enslavement. This nexus explains not just why so many Indians suffered and died, but how the Indigenous survived the way they did. Rather than a quick extermination, cascading social reproduction crises produced thousands of deracinated survivors—that is, survivors uprooted from their communities and cultures.

Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida’s spring concert, Broadway Blockbusters, will be on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 8 pm at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

Broadway has always held a special place within the LGBTQ+ community. Its stages have been a sanctuary for artistic expression, its stories a mirror for our joys, struggles, and triumphs. From heartfelt ballads to high-energy showstoppers, Broadway’s music speaks to resilience, love, and the unapologetic embrace of who we are. This concert will demonstrate how these songs have echoed through our lives and translated our stories in powerful, unforgettable ways. Let’s SHOUT! for the blockbuster tunes that originated on the Great White Way. These are not your average, everyday show tunes. These powerful songs had a life that reached beyond the stage. They made their way into our daily lives, were covered by pop artists, appeared quoted on T-shirts and memes, and are still celebrated as some of Broadway’s all-time eternal best.

Tickets start at $45. This concert features the best of Broadway and is sponsored by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, AARP South Florida, Holman, and OutClique.

Revel in the mystery and magnificence of Mozart’s Requiem as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents its premiere of the composer’s final moving masterpiece and his Symphony No. 40 in G minor! Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring Katherine Henly, soprano; Maggie Reneé, mezzo-soprano; Norman Shankle tenor; Neil Nelson, bass-baritone and the South Florida Symphony Chorus, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most iconic classical compositions ever, with the “Lacrimosa” movement standing out as one of classical music’s most popular movements. Together, Requiem and “Lacrimosa” have approximately one billion views on YouTube and on Spotify, “Lacrimosa” alone has garnered over 91 million streams. The work’s profound emotional depth has led to its inclusion in various films and adaptations by contemporary artists, including Come and See (1985), The Big Lebowski (1998), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021).

Enveloped in intrigue, the 1791 piece was left unfinished at Mozart’s untimely death, sparking rumors and legends about its creation and completion. Characterized by its sorrowful yet transcendent melodies, powerful choral passages, and orchestral depth, the haunting beauty and emotional intensity of Mozart’s Requiem Mass, coupled with the enigma of its origins, have captivated listeners for centuries, solidifying its place as a masterwork that transcends time and continues to inspire both reverence and curiosity.

His ever-popular Symphony No. 40 in G minor cements Mozart’s place as one of music’s greatest innovators. Daring, evocative, and dripping with emotion, it beautifully exemplifies his prodigious status.

SFSO will end its powerful 27th season honoring Icons & Rebels with a dazzling finale on April 9 featuring two celebrated works from Prokofiev and Bruckner.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. This season’s popular collaborations included performances of ARRIVAL From Sweden: The Music of ABBA and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring the iconic film screened live with audio and musical accompaniment.

Mexican-American composer Nathan Felix will present his immersive opera titled Mirrors at the The Bass Museum of Art (2100 Collins Ave) in Miami on Thursday May 15th at 7:00pm for Third Thursday. Mirrors is inspired by their exhibition, Performing Perspectives: A Collection in Dialogue.

The narrative for the immersive opera follows two immigrant nurses who struggle with new identity and cultural challenges in the USA. The women worry if their future children and grandchildren will face the discrimination they endured. Audience members are encouraged to follow the opera singers as they sing and weave through the museum galleries to tell this story. The cast features local singers and musicians from Miami and the surrounding region including Yingxi Li (soprano), Mark Cotton (baritone), Madison Marie McIntosh (mezzo-soprano), and Pedro Carreras (tenor). The conductor for the opera is Felix Jarrar and the string ensemble consists of Naeun Ju on violin, Angie Bolivar on viola and Natalie Van Winkle on cello.

Felix is known for his guerilla-style approach in presenting classical music in unconventional spaces and his immersive opera is no exception, with a performance utilizing space, movement, and acoustics to activate the Bass Museum of Art in a way that has yet to be explored. The idea behind Felix’s immersive opera is similar to a flash mob as it revolves around blurring the line between performer and audience by having musical performers move amongst the audience as they perform a cohesive musical composition. The audience is encouraged to follow the narrative of the piece which entails following the soloists but they are ultimately given agency to explore based on feeling, sight and soundscape.

Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 is the third iteration of the popular Glasstress exhibitions at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Glasstress is a project in Murano, Italy, at the Berengo studio that brings major international artists, many of whom have never worked in glass, to Venice to collaborate with its glass masters. These experts are challenged to rise to the technical challenges that artists at the forefront of contemporary art present and expand beyond their centuries-old techniques. The project also aims to increase the prestige of glass as fine art and to bring Murano’s ancient traditions into the contemporary world. The result is innovative artworks that are dramatic.

Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 includes over twenty works by globally celebrated artists. Irish artist Sean Scully, known for lush abstract paintings, turned to sculpture as an artist-in-residence at the Berengo studio. His Venice Stack is a monumental tower with hand-made glass squares of vibrant colors measuring nearly eight feet tall. Another colorful installation of multiple glass urns by German artist Thomas Schütte, whose work is the subject of a current retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, will also be included.

Afro-Cuban MacArthur Fellow Maria Magdalena Compos-Pons’s contribution to the exhibition is a mobile of abstracted butterflies dedicated to the memory of Breonna Taylor. Laure Prouvost, winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, represented France in the 2019 Venice Biennale and has since collaborated regularly with the masters in Murano. She will contribute a nature-focused installation to this exhibition. Russian artist Anna Jermolaewa made work at the Berengo studio for her exhibition representing Austria in the 2024 Venice Biennale.

Other artists to be included in Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 are Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei with a giant chandelier, British artist Fiona Banner with her life-size glass scaffold, and multiple works by the celebrated British artist Tony Cragg.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog.

Kathleen Goncharov, Senior Curator

A preview of Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 will be included in Art Palm Beach in January 21-25, 2025.

Adapted from a short story by Anthony C. Winkler, The Annihilation of Fish is a tender comedy about two eccentric humans finding love later in life. Lynn Redgrave plays Poinsettia, a former housewife with an imagined lover in the form of 19th-century composer Giacomo Puccini. She moves into a Los Angeles boarding house with an energetic landlady (Margot Kidder). There she meets a Jamaican widower, Fish (James Earl Jones), who has recently been released from a mental institution despite his continued battles against unseen demons. In the face of personal challenges and differences, the couple grows together and begins to discover new things about themselves and the nuances of love and happiness. With extraordinary performances from a stellar cast, the film tackles such sensitive issues as race, mental illness, and aging with anarchic humor and energy.

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Broward County will host a second round of Broward Safety Action Plan (BSAP) public workshops during the month of February. The BSAP initiative emphasizes collaboration between community members, local leaders, and transportation experts. By participating in these workshops, residents can directly influence the development of safer streets for all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, drivers, and transit riders.

Broward County continues to face significant challenges with traffic safety. The county’s fatality rate stands at 14.8 per 100,000 people which is more than five times higher than New York City and twice as deadly as Chicago. The BSAP addresses these challenges by focusing on targeted analysis and solutions to improve safety on priority corridors across Broward County.

The February workshops are designed to educate and engage the public through materials such as corridor concept designs, safety countermeasures, and equity and safety analyses. Each session will include a brief presentation, an open house for feedback, and opportunities to engage directly with the BSAP team. Attendees will also have the chance to sign a safety pledge, explore an interactive map, and receive complimentary safety items, such as bike lights, bracelets or bags.

Tennessee Williams Theatre
5901 College Rd,
Key West, Florida, 33040

Cost: $35

Celebrate love in all its dramatic, poetic, erotic, scandalous and insatiable forms as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents an adventurous Valentine’s Day program featuring three orchestra premieres, headlined by the return of R. Strauss’ Don Juan. Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 14, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of the Florida Keys.

Don Juan is a swashbuckling escapade that both scandalized and delighted audiences with its eroticism and ultra-modern style when it premiered in 1889, cementing Richard Strauss’ (1864-1949) fame as the genius of his generation, making him a favorite among musical modernists. Meanwhile, his Four Last Songs, a SFSO premiere featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra, is a touchingly beautiful and serene masterpiece, bidding farewell to an illustrious career.

Top Prize Winner of the 2018 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Wagner Division, soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra has garnered major attention for her work on the operatic and concert stage. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2005 as a soloist in Brahms’ Requiem with The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of the late James DePreist, her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2014 as “First Lady” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, singing all nine performances of the opera, three of which were Sirius XM Satellite Broadcasts and David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center debut as a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the National Chorale. In 2018, she made her debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Chihuahua in Mexico in a solo concert of arias from Il Trovatore, Nabucco, Tannhäuser, and Turandot. Ms. Shoremount-Obra made her European Operatic debut in 2004 as “Ifigenia” in Handel’s Oreste at the Spoleto Festival, Italy. She has performed numerous operatic roles with a variety of operas and performance groups including Opera Grand Rapids, The American Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic, Grand Harmonie in Princeton, NJ, Odyssey Opera of Boston, Maryland Opera in Baltimore, New York Philharmonic and more. A champion of new music, Shoremount-Obra has premiered/collaborated with some of today’s most popular and notable composers including Tarik O’Regan, Dan Visconti, John Zorn, and Paola Prestini. She is a 2004 New York Regional Winner and National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She has also won numerous awards from other organizations, including the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and has since been supported with supplemental grants from the same foundation. She is the 2016 winner of the Ursula Springer Award from the Wagner Society of New York and together with pianist Christopher Cooley, the 2019 Second Prize Winner in the Joy In Singing International Art Song Competition.

The program also features SFSO’s premiere of Austrian composer Johann Strauss II’s (1825-1899) The Blue Danube, the world’s most famous waltz. Originally written as a choral piece for the Vienna Men’s Choral Association, Strauss adapted it for orchestra soon after it debuted. Epitomizing the symphonic richness and variety of Strauss’s dance music, it ultimately earned him acclaim as the “waltz king,” and has become the best-known of his many dance pieces.

SFSO’s premiere of Hector Berlioz’s (1803-1869) tumultuous “King Lear Overture” (Le roi Lear), perhaps his grandest, most dramatic and atmospheric overture, recounts the dark Shakespearean tragedy of man and a kingdom divided by love and politics.

Now in its 27th season celebrating Icons & Rebels, SFSO invites audiences to tantalizing upcoming works by Mozart, Berlioz, Prokofiev and Bruckner.

Tickets for this Masterworks III program are on sale now beginning at $35. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org or by calling (305) 295-7676. For additional information, visit southfloridasymphony.org, call (954) 522-8445 or email info@southfloridasymphony.org.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

“The Golden Age of the Jews of Al-Andalus” is a curated exhibition that invites visitors to explore the daily life of Jews in the Iberian Peninsula through detailed facsimiles, virtual reproductions, images, and re-creations. This society produced notable figures, such as the diplomat Ibn Shaprut, the poets Ibn Gabirol and Judah Halevi, and the thinker Maimonides, all of whom contributed to a rich cultural heritage that endures to this day.

Visitors can experience a reconstructed medieval synagogue on-site through mixed reality, utilizing augmented reality (AR) features. A virtual reality version is also available online, enabling users to join the guided AR tour and interact with an AI avatar of Maimonides.

A bilingual Spanish-English traveling exhibition, “The Golden Age” was originally curated by José Martínez Delgado, a professor at the University of Granada. The installation on view on the first floor of the Otto G. Richter Library was organized by Centro Sefarad-Israel in collaboration with several organizations, including the Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies, the George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies, and the Libraries at the University of Miami.

A group of friends try to make a “film” to save their theatre company from falling apart during a pandemic. But filmmaking ineptitude, old affairs, and new betrayals may be the virus that ends their company before any global pandemic does.

A brilliant first-time feature Filmed-ENTIRELY-in-Broward. The ensemble cast is spot on with the mercurial pulse of a non-profit theatre troupe, where everyone is equal, except not everyone knows it. The secrets, the secret passions, the tip-toe-poverty, the Hey Mickey & Judy Let’s Do A Show spunk, just perfect. Timothy Mark Davis handles his dual role as director of the piece and a plot-propelling member of the ensemble. The single camerawork is a thing of beauty in this low budget but zenith-seeking romp.

Kudos to Broward Cultural Division, Community Foundation of Broward and Film Lauderdale for investing in this proud-to-be-Broward feature.

The Parker
707 NE 8th Street,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33304
Website
Cost: Tickets start at $25

Celebrate love in all its dramatic, poetic, erotic, scandalous and insatiable forms as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents an adventurous Valentine’s Day program featuring three orchestra premieres, headlined by the return of R. Strauss’ Don Juan. Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra, the concert will take place on Wednesday, February 12, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer.

Tickets for this Masterworks III program are on sale now beginning at $25. For the February 12 concert, buy tickets online at southfloridasymphony.org; by phone at (954) 462-0222; or in person at The Parker or at Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.
