Friday night kicks-off the festivities with two unique events, the VIP Dinner Under-The-Stars; 7PM to 10 PM, which is an intimate 4 course wine and food pairing dinner with your own personal chef and wine sommelier, and the Grand Tasting Launch Party; 7:30 PM to 10 PM, with gourmet food tastings, wine and spirits, with live entertainment to dance the night away. Seminole Tribe of Florida will present a reenactment of the Second Seminole War at the Big Cypress Shootout

The battle reenactments honor the Seminole’s struggle and sacrifice to remain in their homeland and will feature authentic weapons, soldier and warrior attire and tactics typical of the Second Seminole War.

The three-day event will also include music, Seminole food, Seminole and pioneer artisans, tomahawk throws, primitive archery competition, Seminole Stomp Dancing, authentic Seminole and soldier camps, venomous snake shows and alligator wrestling. “Period settlers” from around the country will hew wood, iron and silver crafts and depict trading techniques from the Seminole war era.

Musical guests include: Okefenokee Joe, Benjamin Dehart (The Cracker Tenor) and Tim Charron.

In the 1800s, a total of three wars were fought by the U.S. military against the Seminoles. These campaigns were the longest, costliest, and bloodiest of all the Indian wars. Although many Seminoles were killed or removed to present-day Oklahoma, they were never defeated, and to this day, more than 3,000 Seminoles are known as “The Unconquered” Seminole Tribe of Florida.

New Times Broward/Palm Beach is proud to celebrate the 15th-Annual New Times “Original” Beerfest on March 31, 2012. New Times Original Beerfest has grown over the last 14 years to be one of Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s biggest and most anticipated events. This spring, more than 4,000 young professionals and beer aficionados will descend upon downtown Fort Lauderdale to sample more than 100 of the world’s best local and international beers while enjoying music from a live national act and special offers from local restaurants and vendors.

Beerfest, the oldest and largest in the area, offers guests craft beer, live music, good food, and great times. This year, we will be adding a viewing area to watch the college basketball championship games featuring Jumbotrons with high-tech sound systems.

A VIP area will offer guests premium craft beers not available in general admission, unlimited sampling of delicious food from local restaurants, liquor sampling, VIP tent and premium stage views in addition to full access to Beerfest.

You’re sure to be singing, “Mama Mia!” as Red Bull Candola (can- doh-la) returns to the Venice of America April 14, 2012. The city known for its scenic canals and Intracoastal Waterway will host an event that will have gondoliers racing their manmade, human-powered gondolas down the New River. Teams of three – two mates and a captain – will be challenged with the task of creating, building, and rowing their crafts down a .33 mile course between Huizenga Plaza and Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Interested gondoliers can apply on-line at www.redbullusa.com/candola between now and January 31, 2012. A total of only 30 teams will be chosen to participate so make sure your gondola stands out above the rest. Rumor has it you can score some extra wings for including a certain 8.4 oz can in the design for your craft.

While your boat must float, there are a few other water safety regulations required before castoff. All boats must be entirely human-powered – in other words, no motors or stored energy – and cannot exceed 100 pounds (without passengers), must be between six and twelve feet long and must be at least 2 feet above water, with a maximum of 6 feet tall. Your vessel should also be made using light weight and environmentally safe materials. While in theory we want all of your gondolas to stay afloat, it’s not very likely and we need to keep the water safe for its inhabitants. Oh, and strong swimming skills are required by all aboard.

Not too confident you can master the skill of making the fastest gondola on the planet? Don’t worry. Your race time isn’t the only criteria your team will be judged on – creativity and showmanship will also play a big part into which group gets crowned the Big Bambino. To win over the amoré of the crowd and the judges, each team will perform a 30 second skit before their race time.

Does all of this sound familiar? That’s because the event concept is inspired by one of the wackiest events around, Red Bull Flugtag. However, in Red Bull Candola teams are trying to keep their crafts on the water, not from crashing into it.
